- Last minute notices...
- Due to recent breakthroughs in ship scanning technologies,
- the troop decoys described in the training manuals are now
- obsolete. They have been replaced by a ship affectionately
- dubbed "The Marauder." This ship is identical to its predessesor
- in appearance only. The marauder carries a full arsenal of heat
- seeking missiles in addition to a full complement of infantry.
- Additionally, the marauder boasts greatly enhanced hull armour to
- maximize the probablity of breaking through planetary defenses.
-
- It has come to our attention that the training manuals neglected to
- mention that bomber attacks, in addition to destroying planetary
- structures, also target defending planetary infantry units. This
- is an important detail, especially to the infantry units in question.
-
- Technical notes:
- Memory Managers: If you experience any problems running the game
- and you are using a memory manager such as EMM386 (the Microsoft
- memory manager that comes with DOS 6.0 and greater), please try
- disabling your memory manager. Star Reach does not need any
- conventional memory, and can run without any memory manager at all.
-
- If you experience problems on a machine with 4 MB of memory, try
- disabling memory resident programs such as Smart Drive.
-
- If you still experience problems or are not familiar with altering
- your system setup, with DOS 6.0 and greater you can boot cleanly
- by holding down the SHIFT key as you reset or turn on your computer.
-
- CD-ROM drives: If you experience lock ups upon exiting Star
- Reach or saving games, try disabling the "/e" from the line in
- your AUTOEXEC.BAT which may look something like this:
- "c:\dos\mscdex.exe /d:mscd001 /v /m:15 /e"
-
- If you still experience lock ups, you can try completely disabling
- your CD-ROM drive.
-
- Sound: If you are using IRQ 10 with your Sound Blaster or compatible
- and are having technical problems with the game, try switching to
- IRQ 2, 5, or 7. If you still are experiencing problems with the
- sound, try running with "STAR /n" to turn off the sound.
-
- If you are unable to get sound with Star Reach, you can override
- the autodetect settings from the command line. For example, if
- you need to change to DMA 6, type "star /dma 6" from the command
- line to run the game. For 16-bit Sound Blaster (SB16) cards or
- compatibles, Star Reach autodetects DMA 5. To change to DMA 6 or
- 7, use the above command. Likewise, 8-bit Sound Blaster cards
- (such as the Sound Blaster and Sound Blaster Pro) default to DMA 1.
- To switch to 0 or 3, use the same command. Other options include
- changing the base address with "/base" or changing the interrupt
- with "/int". So a complete setup for your card may be something
- like "star /base 230 /int 7 /dma 6" if you are having sound card
- problems. Of course, you can always run without sound with
- the "/n" option.
-
- If you do not know what settings your Sound Blaster (or compatible)
- is configured to, type "SET" from your C:\ prompt and look for the
- line which will look something like this:
- "SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T6" where "A" is the base, "I" is
- the interrupt, and "D" is the 8-bit DMA, and "H" is the 16-bit DMA.
-
- If you install a new sound card, type "NEWCARD" from your REACH
- directory.
