  68. WHAT IS RGS-BENCHMARK 3.0?
  69. --------------------------
  70. RGS Benchmark 3.0 will give you the power to test your computer in 
  71. the Windows environment. High benchmark numbers means a fast 
  72. computer. Example: A benchmark of 100 is better 50.
  73. CPU = This will test the speed of the following hardware: 
  74.       the processor, coprocessor and memory. (memory manipulations, 
  75.       loops, sorting and calculations of integers and numbers with 
  76.       double precision).
  77. DISK = Tests the speed of wich Windows can read/write 0.512kb-, 2kb and 
  78.        20kb block's to the selected drive. You can see the effect 
  79.        claerly of a diskcache like Smartdrive or if your harddisk is 
  80.        fragmented or not. Also read-only devices like cd-rom's.
  81. VIDEO = Gives you the speed of your graphical card. It uses a large 
  82.         mix of graphical instructions. This will give you a overall 
  83.         performance of how good your video-hardware is and how good 
  84.         the Window video-drivers are!
  85. The program will give you a general(total) benchmark if all of 
  86. these (cpu,disk,video) are tested.

  88. Note: DO NOT MOVE THE MOUSE DURING THE BENCHMARK TEST! 
  89.       If you do, the benchmark results will not be accurate.
  90. RGS-Benchmark 3.0 is not compatible with the previous versions, 
  91. like RGS-Benchmark 1.0 or 2.0.
  92.  
  93. You must know that when testing a computer for speed under Windows 
  94. there are many factors that influence the performance:
  95. - the Windows version (Windows 3.1 is much faster then Windows 3.0)
  96. - diskcaches like Smartdrive will boost the disk performance.
  97. - fragmentation of your harddisk.
  98. - the quality of your videocard-drivers.
  99. - accelerators in your video-hardware.
  100. - Windows 32-bit diskaccess on/off.
  101. - The ammount of memory.
  102. - Applications running in the background decreese the speed.
  103. - a co-processor will improve the CPU-benchmark.
  104.  
  105. A standard 486DX 33Mhz with MS-Smartdrive cache, 100Mb NEC-IDE harddisk, 
  106. TSENG4000 video (no local-bus or accelerator), no 32-bit access and 
  107. Windows 3.1 will have a benchmark of +- 300 on all benchmark tests.
  108. Note:
  109. A benchmark of harddisk can vary due to fragmentation, disk-caches...
  110. Many other benchmarks test the disk access time and/or tranfer rate.
  111. This is a good methode, but it does'nt give you the relative speed
  112. of the harddisk during the use of it. For example: if a harddisk is
  113. fragmented is will perform poorly. When you run RGS-Benchmark 3.0 
  114. disktest you will see this effect clearly.

  117. TESTING A CD-ROM OR ANY OTHER READ-ONLY DEVICE
  118. ----------------------------------------------
  119. RGS-Benchmark 3.0 will automatic test all your drives to see wich
  120. drive is a read-only device, like: CD-ROM, Network drives...
  121. The program will test any CD-rom. It will scan the files and 
  122. directories on the CD-rom. It calculates how much time was needed to 
  123. scan the CD-rom. Then the sum of all files and directories
  124. is divided by the time. This gives a good and realistic look of how 
  125. fast the CD-Rom works onder Windows. 
  126. The benchmarks does'nt vary much due to this formula. Even when 
  127. different disks are used. But if you want accurate results
  128. it is recommended to use the same disk.
  129. It should be possible to test network drives but I'm only a simple
  130. programmer and I do not have a large network to test it. But it should
  131. work anyway. 
  132. Note: Any read-only device can be tested!

  135. TEST MENU
  136. ---------
  137.  TEST SOUNDS
  138.  -----------
  139.  If you have a soundcard installed you will be able to test it with 
  140.  sounds. If you don't have a soundcard you will only be able to test
  141.  the pc-speaker by clicking on the loudspeaker picture when you run 
  142.  this option.

  144.  TEST MONITOR
  145.  ------------
  146.  It will show such anomalies as geometric distortion, pincushion, 
  147.  misconvergence, and color smearing. 
  148.  Such testing Is extremely valuable in evaluating monitor performance 
  149.  (you will beamazed at how many high-priced high-rez monitors are 
  150.  misconverged!).

  152.  TEST MONITOR COLOR
  153.  ------------------
  154.  Every time you click the screen (or press a button)
  155.  the four main colors tests will be run: white, red, green and blue.

  157. VIEW CONFIGURATION MENU
  158. -----------------------
  159. You can view the configurationfiles of your computer computer with a 
  160. simple click on one of the following files:
  161. autoexec.bat, config.sys, System.ini and win.ini. 
  162. You can even edit and save one of these files.
  163. If something goes wrong during saving you can always restore the file
  164. by using the Windows clipboard. There is always a copy in the Windows
  165. Clipboard when saving a edited file to disk.

  167. FILE MENU
  168. ---------
  169. LOAD... = Load a benchmark from disk.
  170. LOAD REFERENCE... = To load a reference benchmark to compare it with 
  171.                     the current benchmark.
  172. SAVE... = After you have made a benchmark you will be able to save the
  173.           benchmark on disk. The program uses a simple ascii-based file
  174.           so you can use any rgs-benchmark-file saved with this option
  175.           in your wordprocessor!
  176. SAVE AS BMP... = Save the benchmark as viewed on screen as a Bitmap(BMP).
  177.                  you can use this to import it in drawing programs like
  178.                  Paintbrush... The file will always be saved in the root
  179.                  of the drive on wich RGS-Benchmark 3.0 is installed.
  180.                  If you activate this option the screen will be saved
  181.                  in the root as RGSBENCH.BMP. You can't load a BMP-file
  182.                  in RGS-Benchmark 3.0.  
  183. COPY TO CLIPBOARD = The screen will be copied to the Windows Clipboard
  184.                     (to use in other programs).
  185. PRINT BENCHMARK = Print the benchmark graphical on paper.
  186. EXIT = Quit RGS-Benchmark.

  188. RUN BENCHMARK MENU
  189. ------------------
  190. ALL = This will test CPU, VIDEO an DISK to make a complete benchmark.
  191. CPU = Test the speed of the motherbord, like: calculations, 
  192.       instruktions, memory write...
  193. DISK = Test the speed of the any diskdrive! Also CD-ROM!!!
  194. VIDEO = Test the speed of your video card (VGA,SVGA...).
  195. CONTINUOUS = This is a Burn In test. It uses all the tests discribed 
  196.              above with no stopping.

  198. INFO MENU
  199. ---------
  200. SYSTEM INFO = Gives you technical information about your computer.
  201. CURRENT COMPUTER FORM = Shows you the information of a computer 
  202.                         that has been tested or loaded before.
  203. REFERENCE COMPUTER FORM = Shows you the information about the 
  204.                           reference computer.
  205. MAKE A COMPUTER FORM = This allows you to make a form of the computer 
  206.                        you tested. You can input the information of the 
  207.                        computer you just tested.
  208.                        This information will be saved on disk together 
  209.                        with the benchmark results.

  211. OPTIONS MENU
  212. ------------
  213. OTHER TESTDRIVE = Select the drive from wich you want a bencmark made. 
  214.                   This can be ANY drive! Like: diskdrives, harddisk, 
  215.                   ramdrives and also CDROM-drives!
  216. SCREENCOLOR = Change the background color of the screen.
  217. VERTICAL GRAPH = Shows the benchmark graph vertical (default).
  218. HORIZONTAL BLOKGRAFIEK = Shows the benchmark graph as a horizontal graph.
  219. SAVE SETUP = Save all current changes you have made, like: type of 
  220.              graph, screen color, reference computer...
  221. SHOW CURRENT SETUP = Shows you the current setup of the program.

  223. SHORTCUT KEYS

  225. ALT PRNTSCREEN = To copy the screen to the Windows ClipBoard.
  226. F1 = A call for help...
  227. F5 = Shows you the form of the current computer.
  228. F6 = Shows you the form of the reference computer.
  229. CTRL A = Run all benchmarks (global test).
  230. CTRL C = Run only the CPU-test.
  231. CTRL D = Run only the DISK-test.
  232. CTRL V = Run only the VIDEO-test.
