Partition type - There are three different FAT partition types: 12-bit FAT; 16-bit FAT, less than 32 MBytes; 16-bit FAT, more than 32 MBytes.

The "Convert Partition" dialog box allows you to convert a FAT partition to HPFS. Press OK to begin, or Cancel to return to the Main Window.
Converting a FAT partition to HPFS requires several manual steps that are outlinerform the operation or choose Cancel to return to the main PartitionMagic window without resizing the partition.
Move Partition
The Move Partition dialog box allows a partition to be moved either right or left into free space. The data within the partition remains unaffected.
The allowable distance a partition can be moved is limited by the free space adjacerosoft long file names take more than one entry per file. Check reports the number of bytes used by Microsoft long file names.

When you select a cluster size that is illegal for the current partition size, a smaller, legal partition size is automatically selected.
Once you have selected the desired cluster size, choose OK to resize the clusters (and, if necessary, the partition), or choose Cancel to return to the Main Window withoutnt to the partition (and cylinder 1024 for FAT partitions). Free space inside the extended partition is not available when moving a Primary partition unless the extended partition boundary is resized first.

To use PartitionMagic, 1) select the physical drive by clicking on it in the Physical Drives section, 2) select the partition by clicking on it in the Partition Map or in the Partition List, then 3) select the option by clicking on the appropriate button. PARTITION MAP
The Partition Map displays the partitions to scale. All theeting, moving and resizing partitions presents NDD with situations that appear as if a partition could have been inadvertently deleted. Ignore OS/2 EA Errors on FAT
One preference available in the Preferences menu is "Ignore OS/2 EA Errors on FAT." When enabled, a check mark is displayed next to the menu item and OS/2 EA errors on FAT partitions will be ignored.

The Cluster Resize dialog box allows you to change the size of the clusters in the currently selected partition. The data within the partition remains unaffected.

The following are advanced options, available on the Advanced menu, or from the pop-up menu when Advanced Dialogs is enabled. See also "Options."
Cluster Resize - Resizes the clusters of FAT partitions. Only legal cluster sizes aree Partition dialog box allows you to make the currently selected partition active. If the selected partition is on the first drive, it must be bootable or you will not be able to boot from your hard drive.
Unlike DOS's FDISK, PartitionMagic hides non-active FAT, HPFS, and NTFS primary partitions. Use this feature to install multiple operating systems and choose among them using PartitionMagic. For example, if you have DOS/Windows and want to install Windows 95 in a separate partition, shrink the DOS partrating systems. HPFS partitions cannot be read by DOS, Windows, or Windows 95. Formatting the partition will DESTROY ALL DATA (including files and programs) in the partition. To change a FAT partition to HPFS without destroying the existing files, use the ition, create another primary partition, set it as the active partition, then boot from the Windows 95 installation diskettes.
A partition that contains a boot utility (such as Boot Manager) should be the active partition. OS/2's FDISK uses the term "Sttries currently allowed. The FAT Partition Check Results window shows the results of a complete partition check for a partition using the FAT (File Allocation Table) file system.

Set Active
If you have multiple primary partitions, only one can be active at a time. When your computer is started or rebooted, it reads the partition table of the first drive, scans it for the active partition and boots that partition. The Set Activ are unable to access a disk that you previously could, you should revive this partition. Would you like to revive this partition? Yes or No."
If you inadvertently deleted a partition, select YES. Otherwise, take the following steps so that this message is not displayed each time you run NDD.
1. Select NO.
NDD will display the following message: "Partition Search. You have chosen not to revive the partition. Do you want Norton Disk Doctor to mark the partition so it doesn't ask about it again? uld be turned off when modifying a computer upon which OS/2 is used. If EA errors are found, use OS/2's CHKDSK to fix them. Do not ignore EA errors if you use OS/2.
If you remove OS/2 from a computer, the OS/2 EAs are not maintained and errors develop. of the HPFS file system. Each Fnode is 512 bytes long; one Fnode exists for each file or directory in the partition.

Using PartitionMagic can mark clusters that are good as bad. For example, if you change the cluster size from 8 Kbytes to 4 Kbytes, each bad cluster becomes two bad clusters. PartitionMagic does this to be conservative; the clusters ected cluster size, a different cluster size is automatically selected. When you select a cluster size that is illegal for the selected partition size, a smaller partition size is automatically selected.

Format Partition
Formatting prepares the currently selected partition for use. The Partition dialog box allows you to specify what file system (FAT or HPFS) to use and the volume label to assign to the partition. FAT partitions can be read by most oped in the manual. Failure to take the addition steps can prevent the computer from booting or from accessing the HPFS partition.
Take special precaution when using this option because the conversion from FAT to HPFS cannot be reversed.

Take care when using these options because hiding or unhiding a partition causes the drive letters of subsequent partitions to change. This can make the co partition. Only clusters marked bad are retested. Choose OK to perform the operation, or choose Cancel to return to the Main Window without making changes.
