  2. SYSINI.TXT for Windows 3.1

  4. [BOOT] SECTION
  5. The [boot] section contains a list of the drivers and
  6. Windows modules that Windows uses to configure itself each
  7. time you start it.
  8.   CAUTION: All settings in this section are required. If you
  9.            modify or delete one of these settings, Windows
  10.            might not operate properly. There are no built-in
  11.            default values for these settings; Setup assigns
  12.            values based on your system configuration.
  13. The [boot] section can contain the following settings:
  14. ------------------------------------------------------------
  15. 286grabber=<filename>
  16.   Default: none
  17.   Purpose: Specifies the filename of the device driver
  18.            (called a grabber) that makes a non-Windows
  19.            application visible when you use Windows in real
  20.            mode or standard mode.
  21.   To change: Choose the Windows Setup icon from the Main
  22.            Group window. This setting changes when you
  23.            change the Display setting in Setup. If you are
  24.            installing a device driver that is not included
  25.            with Windows, run Setup from MS-DOS.
  26. ------------------------------------------------------------
  27. 386grabber=<filename>
  28.   Default: none
  29.   Purpose: Specifies the filename of the device driver
  30.            (called a grabber) that makes a non-Windows
  31.            application visible when you use Windows in 386
  32.            enhanced mode.
  33.   To change: Choose the Windows Setup icon from the Main
  34.            Group window. This setting changes when you
  35.            change the display setting in Setup. If you are
  36.            installing a device driver that is not included
  37.            with Windows, run Setup from MS-DOS.

  39. comm.drv=<filename>
  40.   Default: none
  41.   Purpose: Specifies the filename of the serial
  42.            communications driver you are using.
  43.   To change: Use Notepad to edit the SYSTEM.INI file.

  45. display.drv=<filename>
  46.   Default: none
  47.   Purpose: Specifies the filename of the display driver you
  48.            are using.
  49.   To change: Choose the Windows Setup icon from the Main
  50.            Group window. If you are installing a device
  51.            driver that is not included with Windows, run
  52.            Setup from MS-DOS.
  53. ------------------------------------------------------------
  54. fixedfon.fon=<filename>
  55.   Default: none
  56.   Purpose: Specifies the filename of the fixed system font
  57.            used by Windows version 2.x. This font will still
  58.            be used by version 2.x applications.
  59.   To change: Choose the Windows Setup icon from the Main
  60.            Group window. This setting changes when you
  61.            change the display setting. If you are installing
  62.            a device driver that is not included with
  63.            Windows, run Setup from MS-DOS.
  64. ------------------------------------------------------------
  65. fonts.fon=<filename>
  66.   Default: none
  67.   Purpose: Specifies the filename of the proportionately
  68.            spaced system font used by Windows 3.0.
  69.   To change: Choose the Windows Setup icon from the Main
  70.            Group window. This setting changes when you
  71.            change the display setting in Setup. If you are
  72.            installing a device driver that is not included
  73.            with Windows, run Setup from MS-DOS.

  75. keyboard.drv=<filename>
  76.   Default: none
  77.   Purpose: Specifies the filename of the keyboard driver you
  78.            are using.
  79.   To change: Choose the Windows Setup icon from the
  80.            Main Group window. If you are installing a device
  81.            driver that is not included with Windows, run
  82.            Setup from MS-DOS.
  83. ------------------------------------------------------------
  84. language.dll=<library-name>
  85.   Default: none
  86.   Purpose: Specifies the name of the dynamic-link library
  87.            that supplies language-specific functions. If no
  88.            language library is specified, Windows uses the
  89.            built-in U.S. English library.
  90.   To change: Choose the International icon from the Control
  91.            Panel window.
  92. ------------------------------------------------------------
  93. mouse.drv=<filename>
  94.   Default: none
  95.   Purpose: Specifies the filename of the mouse driver you
  96.            are using.
  97.   To change: Choose the Windows Setup icon from the Main
  98.            Group window. If you are installing a device
  99.            driver that is not included with Windows, run
  100.            Setup from MS-DOS.
  101. ------------------------------------------------------------
  102. network.drv=<filename>
  103.   Default: none
  104.   Purpose: Specifies the filename of the network driver you
  105.            are using.
  106.   To change: Choose the Windows Setup icon from the Main
  107.            Group window. If you are installing a device
  108.            driver that is not included with Windows, run
  109.            Setup from MS-DOS.
  110. ------------------------------------------------------------
  111. oemfonts.fon=<filename>
  112.   Default: none
  113.   Purpose: Supplies the name of the font file for the OEM
  114.            character set. This setting is associated with
  115.            the display setting.
  116.   To change: Run Setup from MS-DOS. This setting changes
  117.            when you change the Languages setting in Setup.
  118. ------------------------------------------------------------
  119. shell=<filename>
  120.   Default: none (Setup initializes this value as
  121.              PROGMAN.EXE)
  122.   Purpose: Specifies the Windows program that runs when you
  123.            start Windows. Unless you change this setting,
  124.            Program Manager will run when you start Windows.
  125.   To change: Use Notepad to edit the SYSTEM.INI file.
  126. ------------------------------------------------------------
  127. sound.drv=<filename>
  128.   Default: none
  129.   Purpose: Specifies the filename of the sound driver you
  130.            are using.
  131.   To change: Use Notepad to edit the SYSTEM.INI file.
  132. ------------------------------------------------------------
  133. system.drv=<filename>
  134.   Default: none
  135.   Purpose: Specifies the filename of the system hardware
  136.            driver you are using.
  137.   To change: Exit Windows and run Setup from MS-DOS.

  139. [BOOT.DESCRIPTION] SECTION
  140. The [boot.description] section is simply a list of strings
  141. that are used to describe the devices you can change when
  142. you run Setup. There is no reason to change these settings.
  143. ------------------------------------------------------------
  144. [KEYBOARD] SECTION
  145. The [keyboard] section provides information about the
  146. keyboard.
  147.   CAUTION: All settings in this section are required. If you
  148.            modify or delete one of these settings, Windows
  149.            will not operate properly. There are no built-in
  150.            default values for these settings; Setup assigns
  151.            values based on your system configuration.
  152. The [keyboard] section can contain the following settings:
  153. ------------------------------------------------------------
  154. keyboard.dll=<filename>
  155.   Purpose: Specifies the name of a dynamic-link library that
  156.            defines the layout for non-U.S. keyboards and
  157.            keyboards not compatible with IBM-compatible
  158.            systems. This setting is required for all
  159.            keyboards except the following U.S. keyboards:
  160.            IBM XT, PC/AT (R), or enhanced; AT&T type 301 or
  161.            302, Olivetti 83-key.
  162.   To change: Choose the Windows Setup icon from the Main
  163.            Group window or the International icon from the
  164.            Control Panel window.
  165. ------------------------------------------------------------
  166. oemansi.bin=<filename>
  167.   Purpose: Specifies the name of a file that defines
  168.            OEM/ANSI code-page translation tables for systems
  169.            not using the U.S. OEM character set (code page
  170.            437).
  171.   To change: Use Notepad to edit the SYSTEM.INI file.
  172. ------------------------------------------------------------
  173. subtype=<number>
  174.   Purpose: Distinguishes, for some drivers, special features
  175.            for keyboards that otherwise have identical
  176.            layouts. The following values are defined:
  177.

  198. type=<number>
  199.   Purpose: Specifies the keyboard type. It can be any one of
  200.            the following values:
  201.

  204.                1    IBM PC or XT compatible (83 keys)

  206.                2    Olivetti 102-key ICO
  207.  
  208.                3    IBM AT compatible (84 or 86 keys)

  213.            If this field is blank or missing, the driver
  214.            selects a default type. For IBM-compatible
  215.            keyboards (using the keyboard.drv driver), the
  216.            default type is determined by the BIOS.
  217.   To change: Choose the Windows Setup icon from the Main
  218.            Group window.
  219. ------------------------------------------------------------
  220. [NONWINDOWSAPP] SECTION
  221. The [NonWindowsApp] section contains settings that affect
  222. the performance of non-Windows applications.
  223. The [NonWindowsApp] section can contain the following
  224. settings:
  225. ------------------------------------------------------------
  226. NetAsynchSwitching=<0-or-1>
  227.   Default: 0
  228.   Purpose: Indicates whether Windows will allow you to
  229.            switch away from an application (running in
  230.            real mode or standard mode) after it has made an
  231.            asynchronous network BIOS call. The default value
  232.            of 0 specifies that such task switching is not
  233.            allowed. Switching away from some applications
  234.            that make these calls might cause your system to
  235.            fail. Once Windows detects an asynchronous
  236.            NetBIOS call, it will not allow switching from
  237.            the application even if no more of these calls
  238.            are made. Set this value to 1 if you are sure the
  239.            applications you use will not receive network
  240.            messages while you are switched away from them.
  241.   To change: Use Notepad to edit the SYSTEM.INI file.
  242. ------------------------------------------------------------
  243. ScreenLines=<number>
  244.   Default: 25
  245.   Purpose: Specifies the number of lines that will be
  246.            displayed on the screen when a non-Windows
  247.            application is run. An application that specifies
  248.            a different screen mode can override this
  249.            setting.
  250.   To change: Use Notepad to edit the SYSTEM.INI file.
  251. ------------------------------------------------------------
  252. SwapDisk=<drive-colon-directory>
  253.   Default: (The directory pointed to by the TEMP environment
  254.            variable; if there is no TEMP variable, then the
  255.            default is the Windows directory)
  256.   Purpose: Provides the name of the disk drive and directory
  257.            to which Windows running in real mode or standard
  258.            mode swaps non-Windows applications.
  259.   To change: Use Notepad to edit the SYSTEM.INI file.
  260. ------------------------------------------------------------
  261. [STANDARD] SECTION
  262. The [standard] section contains settings that are specific
  263. to running Windows in standard mode.
  264. The [standard] section can contain the following settings:
  265. ------------------------------------------------------------
  266. Int28Filter=<number>
  267.   Default: 10
  268.   Purpose: Specifies the percentage of INT28h interrupts,
  269.            generated when the system is idle, that are made
  270.            visible to software that is loaded before
  271.            Windows. Windows will reflect every nth
  272.            interrupt, where n is the value of this setting.
  273.            Increasing this value might improve Windows'
  274.            performance, but may interfere with some memory-
  275.            resident software such as a network. Set this
  276.            value to 0 to prevent INT28h interrupts. But
  277.            note that setting this value too low will add
  278.            to system overhead that might interfere with
  279.            communications applications.
  280.   To change: Use Notepad to edit the SYSTEM.INI file.
  281. ------------------------------------------------------------
  282. NetHeapSize=<kilobytes>
  283.   Default: 8
  284.   Purpose: Specifies the size (in kilobytes) of the buffer
  285.            pool that standard-mode Windows allocates in
  286.            conventional memory for transferring data over a
  287.            network. Some networks require a larger buffer
  288.            than the default. Increasing this value will
  289.            diminish the amount of memory available to
  290.            applications. If no network software is
  291.            running, this setting will be ignored and no
  292.            memory will be allocated.
  293.   To change: Use Notepad to edit the SYSTEM.INI file.
  294. ------------------------------------------------------------
  295. PadCodeSegments=<0-or-1>
  296.   Default: 0
  297.   Purpose: Setting this value to 1 causes Windows kernel to
  298.            pad code segments with 16 bytes. This will
  299.            prevent the last instruction in the segment
  300.            from being too close to the segment limit for
  301.            80286 B2 stepping. You only need to set this
  302.            value to 1 for this 80286 stepping.
  303.            Unfortunately, there is no easy way of telling
  304.            what stepping a 80286 chip is. Try setting this
  305.            value to 1 if your 80286 system hangs in
  306.            standard mode.
  307.   To change: Use Notepad to edit the SYSTEM.INI file.
  308. ------------------------------------------------------------
  309. ReservedLowMemory=<kilobytes>
  310.   Default: 0
  311.   Purpose: Specifies the amount of conventional memory (in
  312.            kilobytes) to be reserved for use by programs
  313.            other than Windows. There is no known reason
  314.            to change this value.
  315.   To change: Use Notepad to edit the SYSTEM.INI file.
