- INTRODUCTION
-
- This manual provides detailed information on installing the
- Quantum IDE hard disk for use with DOS. The instructions
- contained in this manual include all of the information you need
- for partitioning and formatting the Quantum IDE hard disk using
- the INSTALL program. Non-Quantum IDE hard disks cannot be
- partitioned and formatted using the INSTALL program, but you may
- install a Quantum IDE hard disk in a system that already has a
- non-Quantum hard disk installed. The instructions contained in
- this manual assume that you have already physically installed the
- Quantum IDE hard disk in your computer system.
-
-
- SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
-
- To properly install the Quantum IDE hard disk(s) for DOS, you
- need the Quantum IDE Hard Disk Installation Software Diskette and
- a bootable copy of DOS version 3.0 or greater (on a diskette or
- on your first hard disk).
-
- CAUTION: Do not mix versions of your operating system on your
- computer. All hard disks in your system must use the same
- version of your operating system to ensure correct
- operation.
-
- If your computer does not have a bootable hard disk, you must
- boot your system from a bootable DOS floppy diskette containing
- the version of DOS you wish to install in your system.
-
-
- INSTALLATION FOR DOS
-
- The INSTALL program allows you to partition and format the
- Quantum IDE hard disks (up to two) installed in your computer
- system. To accomplish this, the program will:
-
- ∙ Update your CMOS configuration, if necessary.
-
- ∙ Partition and format the hard disk. If you are using the Manual
- Installation mode, you will be able to create multiple volumes on
- the hard disk.
-
- ∙ When partitioning and formatting is completed, the program may
- perform the following functions:
-
- - If you booted DOS from a floppy disk, the program will transfer
- the system files to the Quantum IDE hard disk. You will be
- prompted to insert the "original boot floppy disk." Insert the
- DOS diskette you booted the system from into drive A and press
- <Enter>.
-
- - If you selected the "Software Driver" option from the Set CMOS
- Configuration screen, the program will copy the Quantum IDE DOS
- device driver (IDE_DOS.SYS) onto drive C and create a
- CONFIG.SYS file, or modify the existing CONFIG.SYS file on
- drive C. The original CONFIG.SYS file (if it existed) will be
- saved as CONFIG.OLD.
-
- Messages will be displayed on the screen as the program is
- performing the preceding functions.
-
- When the INSTALL program has been successfully run, the Quantum
- IDE hard disks (up to two) in your system will be ready for use.
-
- Step 1 Boot your computer system and run the INSTALL program.
-
- Boot your computer system from a bootable DOS diskette or from
- the built-in hard disk.
-
- Note: The "STARTUP" versions of MS DOS 5.0 and later load a Microsoft
- setup utility on boot. Press <F3> to exit this utility before
- running the Quantum IDE INSTALL program.
-
- After the system has booted, remove the bootable DOS diskette
- from drive A, if necessary, and insert the Quantum IDE Hard Disk
- Installation Software Diskette into drive A.
-
- Run the INSTALL program.
-
- A screen will briefly display while the INSTALL program is
- checking the system configuration and setting up parameters for
- the installation process.
-
- Step 2 Verify the installation configuration.
-
- a. The INSTALL program automatically finds each hard disk in the
- system. When the INSTALL program has completed the
- initialization process, a verification screen lists the hard
- disks.
-
- NOTE: The INSTALL program contains an extensive on-line Help
- function. The Help function can be accessed from any INSTALL
- program screen that displays the "<F1> Help" item in the menu
- line at the top of the screen.
-
- b. If the list of hard disks differs from your expectations, it may
- be due to one of the following reasons:
-
- ∙ The power cables may be loose.
-
- ∙ The data cables may be loose.
-
- ∙ Some drives, such as RAM disks and network disks, will not appear
- in the list, though they will still operate in your system.
-
- ∙ If you have more than 8 hard disks installed, only the first 8
- will be displayed.
-
- c. Exit the INSTALL program to check your cabling, if necessary, or
- proceed from this point if you are satisfied with the
- configuration.
-
- d. If the list of hard disks agrees with what is physically
- installed in the computer system, or differences can be
- explained, respond by pressing <Enter> and proceed to Step 3.
-
- Step 3 Change the INSTALL program display and installation options, if
- desired.
-
- a. If you wish to improve the readability of the INSTALL program
- screen displays, you may change the screen color combinations by
- pressing the <F3> key.
-
- b. Change the installation parameters, if desired. To change the
- default installation parameters, press <F2> to select the options
- menu. This menu allows you to choose the following options:
-
- - Whether to create a primary or extended partition on the second
- hard disk.
-
- - To select a quick or standard format method for formatting the
- hard disk.
-
- - To select the use of the standard or extended BIOS drive-type
- tables, if your computer supports extended drive-types.
-
- - Whether or not you wish to use the supplied Quantum IDE DOS
- device driver (IDE_DOS.SYS). The device driver allows you to
- use the total capacity of the Quantum IDE hard disk.
-
- Refer to the section entitled "Installation Options" at the end
- of this manual for information on using the Options function.
-
- Step 4 Select Automatic or Manual Installation.
-
- There are two methods available to install your Quantum IDE hard
- disk(s).
-
- ∙ Automatic Mode partitions and formats all blank Quantum IDE hard
- disks in your computer system with a minimum of interaction.
-
- ∙ Manual Mode allows you to specify custom partition sizes other
- than the default choices made by the Automatic mode.
-
- Automatic Installation
-
- The Automatic Installation mode initializes only Quantum IDE hard
- disks that have not been partitioned and formatted. The first
- hard disk in the system is always made bootable. If you have
- changed the default installation parameters, a primary partition
- (non-bootable) will be installed on the second hard disk. (See
- "Installation Options" at the end of this manual.)
-
- For DOS versions 3.31 and later, the initialization process
- creates partitions equal to the full capacity of the hard disks.
- For DOS versions 3.0 through 3.3 the initialization process
- creates as many 32 Mbyte partitions as the hard disk capacity
- allows, with the last partition containing the remainder.
-
- Step 1 Select the automatic installation option.
-
- Press <Enter> from the Select Installation Mode screen to start
- the installation process. The Automatic Installation Mode screen
- will be displayed.
-
- Step 2 Partition and format the Quantum IDE hard disk.
-
- Press <Enter> to begin partitioning and formatting the hard disk.
- The INSTALL program will now set the CMOS configuration.
-
- The INSTALL program searches your computer's BIOS drive-type
- tables to identify a drive-type that is an exact match or that
- comes the closest to matching the full capacity of the hard disk.
-
- If the standard BIOS drive-type table contains the exact or
- closest match, or the drive-type that is the closest match has
- been previously set, the INSTALL program uses this drive-type to
- set the CMOS configuration for this hard disk. Go to Step 3.
-
- If the standard BIOS drive-type table does not contain an exact
- or close match, or the drive-type has not been previously set,
- the program displays the Set CMOS Configuration screen.
-
- The Set CMOS Configuration screen lets you select the BIOS drive-
- type to use. The following selections are available:
-
- ∙ Standard Drive-Type - Displays the drive-type from the standard
- drive-type table that comes the closest to matching the full
- capacity of this Quantum IDE hard disk for you to select.
-
- ∙ Extended Driver-Type - Displays the drive-type from the
- extended drive-type table, if your computer supports extended
- drive-types, that comes the closest to matching the full capacity
- of Quantum IDE hard disk for you to select. Because extended
- drive-types are stored differently from system to system, we
- advise that you check the drive-type displayed in the Set CMOS
- Configuration screen with the corresponding drive-type in your
- computer's SETUP program. If the values do not match, you should
- not use this selection.
-
- ∙ Software Driver - Installs the Quantum IDE DOS device driver
- (IDE_DOS.SYS) to make use of the total capacity of the installed
- Quantum IDE hard disk.
-
- Note: Before you use this selection, you should read the section
- entitled "Using the Quantum IDE Device Driver (IDE_DOS.SYS)" at
- the end of this manual to determine the advantages and
- disadvantages of using the device driver. In addition, if you
- are currently using, or plan to use the FastDisk feature of
- Windows 3.1, refer to the section entitled "Using the IDE_DOS.SYS
- Device Driver With the FastDisk Feature of Windows 3.1."
-
- ∙ Select Drive-Type from Table - Displays a screen that lets you
- scroll through the usable selections from the BIOS drive-type
- table to select the one you wish to use. Selections are listed
- by total disk space available and percentage of disk used,
- starting with the drive-type that comes the closest to matching
- the full capacity of the hard disk.
-
- Select a drive-type by pressing <Enter> when the desired type is
- highlighted.
-
- Use the up-down arrow keys to make the selections you wish to use
- and press <Enter> to continue the installation process.
-
- After you make your selection, a screen will be displayed that
- shows the total disk space available, percentage of disk used,
- the drive-type number, number of cylinders, number of heads, and
- number of sectors for the selection you highlighted. If you are
- satisfied with the selection you made, press <Enter> to continue
- the installation process, otherwise press <Esc> to make another
- selection.
-
- Press <Enter> again at the continuation screen.
-
- Step 3 Complete the installation.
-
- The program displays a message to indicate that it is updating
- your CMOS configuration.
-
- When the INSTALL program completes updating your CMOS
- configuration it displays a message indicating that it is
- partitioning and formatting the hard disk.
-
- When the partitioning and formatting is completed, the program
- will perform the following functions:
-
- ∙ If you booted DOS from a floppy disk, and this hard disk is the
- first hard disk (drive C), you will be prompted to insert the
- "original boot floppy disk" so the program can transfer the
- system files to the Quantum IDE hard disk.
-
- Insert the bootable DOS diskette you booted the system with into
- drive A and press <Enter>.
-
- If you selected the "Software Driver" option from the Set CMOS
- Configuration screen:
-
- ∙ The program will create a CONFIG.SYS file, or modify the existing
- CONFIG.SYS file on drive C. The original CONFIG.SYS file (if it
- existed) will be saved as CONFIG.OLD.
-
-
- . The program will copy the Quantum IDE DOS device driver
- (IDE_DOS.SYS) onto drive C.
-
- Messages are displayed on the screen as the program performs
- these functions.
-
- When the INSTALL program has completed copying the device driver
- onto the boot drive (if applicable), a dialog box is displayed
- that explains an additional installation procedure that must be
- performed if you are using the Quantum IDE DOS device driver with
- the FastDisk feature of Windows 3.1. Refer to the section
- entitles "Using IDE_DOS.SYS With the FastDisk Feature of Windows
- 3,1" at the end of this manual. Read the information in the
- dialog box, then press <Enter> to continue.
-
- You will be then be prompted to remove the diskette from drive A
- and re-boot your system by pressing <Ctrl><Alt><Del>.
-
- All newly installed, or previously unpartitioned Quantum IDE hard
- disks, have now been automatically installed and are ready for
- use with DOS.
-
- Step 4 Installing the complete MS DOS utility package when the "Software
- Driver" option has been selected.
-
- If you are installing an "UPDATE" version of MS DOS follow the
- installation instructions in the MS DOS documention.
-
- If you are installing a "STARTUP" version of MS DOS 5.0 or later do
- the following.
-
- a. Copy the IDE_DOS.SYS device driver to "DISK 1" of your MS DOS
- diskette package. To do this put DISK 1 in drive A:, and then
- from the C: prompt enter:
-
- COPY IDE_DOS.SYS A:
-
- b. Add the driver to the CONFIG.SYS on "DISK 1." To do this, enter:
-
- REN A:CONFIG.SYS CONFIG.SAV
- COPY C:CONFIG.SYS + A:CONFIG.SAV A:CONFIG.SYS
-
- c. From this point follow the instructions in the MS DOS documentation
- to install the remaining MS DOS utilities.
-
- Note: The MS DOS setup utility will warn you that a pre-existing
- version of MS DOS is already present on your hard disk, and recommend
- you obtain the "UPDATE" version of MS DOS. Ignore this warning and
- continue with the installation.
-
- d. The MS DOS setup utility will create a new CONFIG.SYS on your hard
- disk, over-writing the CONFIG.SYS file created by the INSTALL program.
- You will need to add the IDE_DOS.SYS driver to this new CONFIG.SYS
- file. Using the MS DOS EDIT program, add the line,
-
- DEVICE=IDE_DOS.SYS
-
- to the beginning of the CONFIG.SYS file in the root directory of the
- hard disk.
-
-
-
- Manual Installation
-
- Manual Installation lets you customize the volumes on your new
- Quantum IDE hard disk. If you wish to modify an installed hard
- disk, the Manual Installation Mode lets you delete the existing
- volumes on the hard disk and re-install them. The procedure for
- reinitializing a partitioned Quantum IDE hard disk is described

- g. Press <Enter> to exit the INSTALL program. If the Quantum IDE
- hard disk was your only hard disk, and you deleted the boot
- partition, the system will return to the A: prompt without re-
- booting. If you have a built-in hard disk, the system will re-
- boot from the built-in. To create new volumes, refer to the
- beginning of this manual.
-
-
- INSTALLATION OPTIONS
-
- The INSTALL program provides the option of modifying certain
- default installation parameters. To change the default
- installation parameters, press the <F2> key, when it appears in
- the menu line at the top of the screen, to display the Select
- Option menu.
-
- To change one of the options, select the option and press
- <Enter>. The status indicator at the end of the menu line
- toggles to "No" to indicate the option is disabled, if it was
- previously enabled, or to "Yes" if it was previously disabled.
- The following provides a brief explanation of the options
- available.
-
- When the "Create Primary Partition On Second Hard Disk" option is
- disabled (No), only the first partition on first hard disk in the
- system will be installed as a primary (bootable) partition. All
- additional partitions installed on the first hard disk, and any
- partitions installed on a second hard disk will be extended (non-
- bootable) partitions.
-
- When this option is enabled (Yes), the first partition on each
- Quantum IDE hard disk in the system will be installed as a
- primary partition. All other partitions on the installed hard
- disk will be extended partitions. Most versions of DOS assign
- partition designators to primary partitions first, then to
- extended partitions. Therefore, if you have more than one
- partition on your first hard disk (for example, two partitions),
- and you have installed more than one partition on the second hard
- disk, DOS will assign the partition designators as follows:
-
- C> Primary partition on the built-in, or first hard disk.
- D> Primary partition (first partition) on second hard disk
- E> Extended partition (second partition) on first hard disk.
- F> First extended partition (second partition) on second hard disk.
- G> Second extended partition (if created) on second hard disk, etc.
-
- When the "Use DOS Read-Verify Type Format" option is disabled
- (No), the INSTALL program uses an accelerated format method to
- prepare the partitions on the Quantum IDE hard disk(s) for use.
- Since Quantum IDE hard disks are defect free, this type of format
- is all that is necessary.
-
- When this option is enabled (Yes), the INSTALL program uses the
- lengthy, DOS type, high level format to prepare the partitions on
- the hard disk(s) for use. This format method causes the entire
- disk to be read before placing the format information on the hard
- disk. Since Quantum IDE hard disks are defect free, this type of
- format is not be necessary.
-
- When the "Use Extended BIOS Tables When Setting CMOS" option is
- disabled (No), the INSTALL program will use the BIOS drive-type
- from only the standard drive-type table that comes the closest to
- matching the full capacity of the Quantum IDE hard disk.
-
- If your computer supports extended drive-types, you may enable
- this option (Yes). When this option is enabled (Yes), the
- INSTALL program will use the BIOS drive-type from only the
- extended drive-type table that comes the closest to matching the
- full capacity of Quantum IDE hard disk.
-
- When the "Use Software Driver For Full Capacity" option is
- disabled (No), the Quantum DOS device driver (IDE_DOS.SYS),
- provided on the Quantum IDE Hard Disk Installation Software
- Diskette, is not used by the INSTALL program. The BIOS drive-
- type must be set using the computer's Setup utility, or by using
- the Set CMOS Configuration function of the INSTALL program.
-
- When this option is enabled (Yes), the Quantum DOS device driver
- (IDE_DOS.SYS) is automatically installed by the INSTALL program.
- IDE_DOS.SYS lets you make use of the total capacity of the
- installed Quantum IDE hard disk. Refer to the following section
- for additional information on the advantages and disadvantages of
- using the Quantum DOS device driver (IDE_DOS.SYS).
-
-
- Using the Quantum IDE Device Driver (IDE_DOS.SYS)
-
- The Quantum IDE DOS device driver (IDE_DOS.SYS) lets you use the
- full capacity of the hard disk if your computer's BIOS drive-type
- table does not have a close match, or your computer does not
- support user definable or custom drive-types. The IDE_DOS.SYS
- device driver is provided on the Quantum IDE Hard Disk
- Installation Software Diskette. You may enable the use of the
- device driver in either of the following ways:
-
- ∙ Change the default installation parameters by pressing <F2> to
- select the Select Options menu and changing the program defaults
- to use the supplied Quantum software driver by enabling the "Use
- Software Driver For Full Capacity" option in the menu.
-
- ∙ Select the "Software Driver" option from the Set CMOS
- Configuration screen.
-
- When the "Use Software Driver For Full Capacity" option is
- enabled (Yes) in the Select Options menu or the Software Driver
- option is selected in the Set CMOS Configuration screen, the
- Quantum DOS device driver (IDE_DOS.SYS) is automatically
- installed by the INSTALL program. IDE_DOS.SYS lets you make use
- of the total capacity of the installed Quantum IDE hard disk.
-
- Normally, you would set the drive-type in CMOS using the
- computer's Setup program. A drive-type would be chosen that
- corresponds to an equal or lesser capacity than that of the hard
- disk. In effect, unless a drive-type that is an exact match is
- available, some part of the hard disk remains unusable. Using
- the IDE_DOS.SYS device driver allows access to the full capacity
- of the Quantum IDE hard disk.
-
- The IDE_DOS.SYS device driver also lets you use extended
- partitions in versions of DOS that are limited to a single
- partition, such as most versions of DOS version 3.2 or earlier.
- This allows you to use more than 32 MB of the hard disk with
- these versions of DOS.
-
- The IDE_DOS.SYS device driver will only function properly in an
- environment that is created by the INSTALL program. The device
- driver will not function properly alone. It will only work
- properly in conjunction with the hard disk when partitioned and
- formatted by the INSTALL program. This environment allows full
- compatibility with DOS.
-
- The Quantum device driver works in conjunction with code that is
- placed in sector 1 on the first hard disk by the INSTALL program
- when partitions are initially created on the hard disk. If, at
- some time in the future, you wish to stop using the Quantum
- device driver, you must de-install this code from any hard disk
- that was installed with the device driver. This can be done by
- using the INSTALL program to change the BIOS drive-type setting
- to zero, or some other standard drive-type, and saving the
- changes. Changing the BIOS drive-type setting with the INSTALL
- program removes the code and returns sector 1 to its original
- condition. Any partitions that were previously on the hard disk
- will not be accessible after the BIOS drive-type has been
- changed. If you wish to delete the partitions on the hard disk
- before changing the CMOS setting, refer to the section entitled
- "Re-Initializing An Already Installed Hard Disk" for information
- on deleting partitions.
-
- To boot a system from a diskette which has been previously
- initialized with INSTALL, the diskette must have the line,
- "DEVICE=IDE_DOS.SYS" in a CONFIG.SYS file. If this device driver
- statement is not present in the CONFIG.SYS file, you will not be
- able to access any partition set up with the device driver using
- the INSTALL program. If the device driver is accidentally erased
- from the hard disk, it can simply be copied back to the hard disk
- from a backup floppy. Quantum suggests that you make a backup
- bootable diskette with the IDE_DOS.SYS device driver on it.
-
- Note: The device driver statement "DEVICE=IDE_DOS.SYS" must be the
- first "DEVICE=" statement in the CONFIG.SYS file, except in cases
- where used with memory managers.
-
