  58.        program S3INST.CMD on the supplied OS/2 disk #1 and follow the

  81. 1. Using the Windows SETUP Program to Change Drivers
  82.    =================================================
  83.    If you use the Windows SETUP program to select or reselect the
  84.    DXP driver (either in Windows or from the DOS command line), always
  85.    elect to use the CURRENT installed driver unless you have a new
  86.    S3 Windows driver diskette. If you need to re-install the original
  87.    driver included with the your board, run the WinSetup program on
  88.    the diskette included with your S3 graphics accelerator.

  90. 2. Chinese/Japanese/Korean/Thai Editions of Microsoft Windows
  91.    ==========================================================
  92.    The DXP driver and Control Panel are fully compatible with these
  93.    foreign language editions of Microsoft Windows. If you encounter any
  94.    problems, please let us know. (See also notes 4 and 5 below.)
  95.    Sorry, IBM's version of Japanese Windows is NOT supported; you are
  96.    limited to the 800x600x16 color mode supported by IBM's SVGA driver.

  98. 3. True-Color Display Configurations: 24bpp and 32bpp
  99.    =========================================================
  100.    For 2MB and 4MB memory configurations, S3 defaults to 32bpp in true
  101.    color configurations. The DXP control panel, however, offers you a
  102.    choice of either 24bpp or 32bpp display modes for added flexibility
  103.    (assuming the chipset supports both 32bpp and 24bpp packed pixel mode).
  104.    If you encounter a problem using 32bpp (e.g., corrupted icons or
  105.    other resources), try switching to a 24bpp color depth; if this works,
  106.    you should be able to safely reselect 32bpp using the DXP Control
  107.    Panel. The 32bpp configuration offers roughly double the performance.
  108.  
  109. 4. Japanese Windows Configurations - Special Notes
  110.    ===============================================
  111.    Due to the heavier resource requirements, S3 does NOT support the
  112.    following display modes under Japanese Windows:
  113.       1024x768x16.7M colors        1280x1024x32k colors
  114.       1280x1024x65k colors         1280x1024x16.7M colors
  115.       1600x1200x32k colors         1600x1200x65k colors
  116.    However, since problems in these display modes are largely application
  117.    dependent, the DXP Control Panel gives you the option of selecting
  118.    these display modes if your chipset and memory configuration support
  119.    them.

  121.    Note also that Japanese Windows is incompatible with the resolution of
  122.    640x400 pixels offered by the DXP to provide true color with Trio64-based
  123.    boards that have only 1MB of memory.

  125. 5. DCI Support
  126.    ===========
  127.    Full DCI support requires Video for Windows 1.1d or a later version. If
  128.    you are using an earlier version of VfW, you may encounter problems.
  129.  
  130. 6. Adding a Refresh Rate Setting to the AUTOEXEC.BAT File
  131.    ======================================================
  132.    The DXP Control Panel gives you the option of adding your refresh rate
  133.    setting to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file so that the system will "remember" your
  134.    preference each time it starts. This setting is added to the beginning
  135.    of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to ensure it is called by systems with multiple
  136.    DOS configurations. Because the S3REFRSH.EXE program appends its calls to
  137.    the end of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, it is possible for the DXP setting to be
  138.    overridden by an S3REFRSH.EXE call.

  218. Hardware Troubleshooting
  219. ========================
  220.  
  221. The following are some recommended steps to take if the VIEWTOP BP-S3x adapter
  222. will not boot or operate properly in your system:
  223. 1. Check to see if the card is firmly seated in its PCI Bus expansion slot. It
  224.    should not be making contact with any other cards in the system.
  225.    (Note: Turn the system off before adjusting the card.)
  226. 2. Check to see if your monitor is properly connected to the card. Be sure
  227.    your monitor's pin definitions match those of your VIEWTOP BP-S3x card.
  228. 3. Turn system on. Confirm that the system's power supply is operating
  229.    properly. (i.e. fan operates and system power light turns on).

  232. Commonly Asked Questions
  233. ========================

  236. MONITORS
  237. ========
  238. Q. What kind of monitor do I need to display 800x600 or 1024x768 resolution?
  239. A. To display 800x600 resolution at 56 Hz refresh, your monitor must be
  240.    capable of a 35.2 kHz horizontal scan rate (e.g., NEC 2A, 3D). At 72 Hz
  241.    refresh, your monitor must be capable of a 48.0 kHz scan rate
  242.    (e.g., Sony HG 1304, NEC 4D, 5D, Seiko 1450).
  243.    To display 1024x768 interlaced, your monitor must be capable of a 35.5 kHz
  244.    horizontal scan rate (e.g., NEC 3D, Seiko 1430 or 1440). To display
  245.    1024x768 non-interlaced (60 Hz), your monitor must be capable of a 48.3 kHz
  246.    scan rate (e.g., Sony HG 1304, NEC 4D, 5D, Seiko 1450). To display 1024x768
  247.    non-interlaced (70 Hz), your monitor must be capable of a 56.4 kHz scan
  248.    rate (e.g. NEC 4FG).

  250. Q. What kind of monitor do I need to display 1280x1024 resolution?
  251. A. A 19-inch or larger size monitor is recommended to display 1280x1024
  252.    (e.g. NEC 4FG).
  253.  
  254. SYSTEMS
  255. =======
  256. Q. Can I have two graphics boards in my system at the same time?
  257. A. A monochrome card may co-reside with the VGA adapter. You cannot have an
  258.    EGA, CGA, or another VGA card co-resident.

  260. SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS
  261. =====================
  262. Q. When I run a system utilities program (PC Tools, Norton Utilities, etc.)
  263.    it tells me I only have 256K of video memory, even though 1 MB, 2 MB or
  264.    4 MB is on the board. What's wrong?
  265. A. Nothing is wrong. System utility programs are designed to detect only the
  266.    1 MB VGA Standard amount of video memory (256K).
  267.  
  268. Q. My display is not correct when I run VPIC or RIX. What's wrong?
  269. A. The first thing to check is the software version. VPIC should be version
  270.    4.6 or later. RIX must be version 1.38 or later. If you are using an
  271.    earlier version of VPIC, please contact your software vendors for upgrade
  272.    information.
  273.  
  274. Troubleshooting Windows 3.1x
  275. ============================
  276. This section provides troubleshooting tips for users having problems
  277. installing or using the high-resolution drivers provided for Windows 3.1x.
  278. Be sure you have installed the SMODE utility on your hard drive before
  279. you continue with the troubleshooting procedures.
  280.  
  281. Problem:    The Windows screen won't come up. It kicks back to the DOS prompt.
  282. Solution A: Be sure the driver version is the correct for the S3 chipset on
  283.             your card. Be sure the resolution chosen is a match for the amount
  284.             of memory on-board. (Please refer to your User's Manual)
  285. Solution B: Try adding the statement "EMMEXCLUDE=A000-C7FF" to the [386
  286.             enhanced] section of the Windows SYSTEM.INI file. The SYSTEM.INI
  287.             file is located in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
  288. Solution C: If using QEMM, try adding the following QEMM exclude statement
  289.             "DEVICE= QEMM386.SYS X=A000-C7FF" to your CONFIG.SYS file.
  290. Solution D: Check CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files and minimize TSRs
  291.             (Terminate and Stay Resident Programs) or Device Drivers, such as,
  292.             DEVICE=ANSI.SYS in CONFIG.SYS or PCSHELL.EXE in AUTOEXEC.BAT.
  293.  
  294. Problem:    Windows hangs up during or after installing a driver.
  295. Solution A: Review the installation procedures to be sure you have installed
  296.             the drivers correctly.
  297. Solution B: Did Windows display an error message before hang-up?
  298.      If no: Check CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files and minimize TSRs
  299.             (Terminate and Stay Resident Programs) or Device Drivers, such as,
  300.             DEVICE=MOUSE.SYS in CONFIG.SYS or PCTOOLS.EXE in AUTOEXEC.BAT.
  301.             If SYSTEM.INI ( located in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory) has been
  302.             edited, try replacing with a clean version from the original
  303.             Windows diskettes. (Note: If this is done, any other changes you
  304.             may have made to SYSTEM.INI will be lost) Delete and reinstall the
  305.             driver(s).
  306.    If yes:  If Windows reports "... file corrupted", be sure you have used the
  307.             Windows or OEM Setup program to install the drivers. Copying the
  308.             drivers to your Windows directory without using the WINSETUP
  309.             program will result in a file corruption error (the files must be
  310.             expanded as well as copied). If you use the correct setup program
  311.             and still have problems, delete the OEM driver files from your
  312.             Windows directory and use a new set of drivers.
  313.  
  314. Problem:    I see garbage or double images on the screen.
  315. Solution A: If the problem persists with the jumpers set correctly, the board
  316.             may be defective. Contact your dealer for further support.
  317.  
  318. Problem:    The Windows color palette does not look right or the colors are
  319.             changing.
  320. Solution:   It is most likely a defective RAMDAC, memory chip, clock chip, or
  321.             crystal. Contact your dealer to have the problem repaired.
  322.  
  323. Problem:    Can't display certain modes.
  324. Solution A: Run the SMODE program.
  325. Solution B: Check to see you have enough memory on the BP-S3x card to run
  326.             this mode. For example, to run display modes of 1280x1024/256
  327.             colors, 2 megabyte of memory is required.
  328. Solution C: If steps A or B do not resolve this problem, it may be a hardware
  329.             problem. Check specifications and capability of the monitor.
  330.  
  331. Problem:    The Windows screen size is too tall or too narrow.
  332. Solution A: Run SMODE to verify the problem.
  333. Solution B: Some monitors have limited bandwidth and the Windows screen size
  334.             problem may not be corrected completely.
  335.  
  336. Problem:    Icons and characters are too small in 1024x768 and 1280x1024 modes.
  337. Solution:   It is normal for icons and characters to become smaller in higher
  338.             resolutions. A 19-inch or larger monitor is recommended for these
  339.             higher modes.

  341. Problem:    My mouse doesn't function properly.
  342. Solution A: Check mouse connection and re-boot the system.
  343. Solution B: Contact mouse vendor for latest version of the mouse driver.
