PROCOMM PLUS provides an external program called FAXSTAT.EXE that allows you to automatically monitor your fax modem, alerting you to incoming, outgoing, and received faxes. You can load this program automatically on Windows startup by setting PROCOMM PLUS' Answer mode to Fax or Fax & Data, and copying the FAXSTAT icon from your PROCOMM PLUS 2.0 group to your Windows Startup group.

Do you find these hints useful? You can create your own custom set of hints by editing the HINTS.TXT file. Edit, add, and delete entries using a text editor, but make sure you respect the usage of the special characters! Corporate and MIS personnel will find this an easy way to help new users of PROCOMM PLUS get up to speed by providing hints specific to their jobs. You can even add or change the topic headings by editing the category list at the top of HINTS.TXT. See HINTS.DOC, available from the DATASTORM BBS, for details.

If you'd like to automatically run a certain script each time you launch PROCOMM PLUS, simply name the script "STARTUP.WAS", compile it, and place it in your script directory. To continue this hint display (which is called by your existing STARTUP.WAX), see HINTS.DOC, available from the DATASTORM BBS.

The PROCOMM PLUS Scheduler is a convenient utility that can run any DOS or Windows application - including PROCOMM PLUS itself - at the date and time you specify, or at a certain regular frequency. You can add any command line arguments available for the program as well, allowing you to modify its operation just as if you had typed in the command yourself. Scheduler also features built-in support for CISMGR, MCIMGR, and other ASPECT programs.

Using the "Seconds until download time-out" in ASCII Options, you can set the number of seconds PROCOMM PLUS will wait between received characters during an ASCII download. If the connection remains idle for this number of seconds (PROCOMM PLUS hasn't received any characters), the transfer will automatically end and the file will be saved to disk. This option is especially helpful if you're performing unattended downloads of ASCII files; since most host systems pause at a command prompt after transferring a file, PROCOMM PLUS will automatically end the download by itself!
#_3068

You can even compile Windows ASPECT scripts from the editor!
#_10400
$_WorkingFax
PROCOMM PLUS supports the Windows 3.1 "drag and drop" standard; simply select the documents you want to send from the File Manager and drag them to the Fax Status dialog or the FaxStat icon. You can also drag and drop files from the File Manager to the Terminal window, which automatically initiates a file transfer.
#_
$_WorkingProtocols
The EBCDIC character set is used exclusively by IBM mainframes, and a "text" file you download from the mainframe will contain these characters. By enabling the IND$FILE ASCII Translate option, the EBCDIC characters are converted to ASCII during downloads; during uploads, the mainframe converts the ASCII characters to EBCDIC. Note: Do not enable ASCII translation if you'll be transferring binary files! The translation will modify the data, making it unusable.

Most script applications are quite straightforward. For example, scripts that automate log-ons or file transfers are usually simple sets of keystrokes that are repeated each session. For these repetitive procedures, use Record mode to save each prompt from the host system and each keystroke you type as script commands in a Windows ASPECT source file. Once the file has been compiled, you can use it to perform that same procedure automatically!

Call Waiting is a great convenience, but it can disrupt your online sessions. If your phone company supports the option, you can turn off Call Waiting for the duration of your modem call. Just enter the proper commands in the Disable Call Waiting section of the Advanced Modem Commands window.

Do you need a custom baud rate? Edit the PW2.INI file, under [Options], and add "BaudRate=14400" or whatever baud rate you wish. This replaces the 110 baud setting throughout PROCOMM PLUS with the specified value. The new baud rate is limited to values of 32000 or less. Note that for some PCs, this figure could be rounded to the nearest even divisor or rejected entirely. The new baud rate will appear within Setup, the Quick Select Line and the Dialing Directory.
