- Configuring Movie Vision MPEG LITE for Windows 95
- -------------------------------------------------
-
- 1. There are Timer parameters for Windows 95 in "MPEG-I.INI" to control the
- MPEG bit-stream. The default settings are:
- [AppPlayer]
- TimerInterval=3
- TimerTickCount=2
- This means that every 3 ms sends 2 ticks to trigger the CD-ROM drive. If
- you feel that the bit-stream is too slow, lessen the TimerInterval and
- increase TimerTickCount.
-
- 2. Try connecting your IDE CD-ROM drive to the computer system's Secondary IDE
- Interface if possible. Using Primary IDE Interface may cause erratic
- playback as the bit-stream transfer rate is slowed down since it has to
- control two IDE devices (one harddisk and one CD-ROM drive) at the same
- time.
-
- 3. Once you have placed a ISO-9660 CD-ROM disc into the CD-ROM drive, the
- system will keep the current file structure. It will not recognize CD-i
- disc because DOS cannot refresh the directory information of the disc. Try
- opening and closing the CD-ROM drive door so that the program can refresh
- the CD-ROM data.

- Trouble Shooting
- ----------------
- 1. Q: Message appears "Can't Initialize System [90]" when the MPEG program
- executes.
- A: Movie Vision MPEG LITE uses four common I/O addresses
- 280-28F, 2A0-2AF, 300-30F and 320-32F.
- If the software and hardware settings do not match or the I/O port
- conflicts with other add-on cards, then the program will not be able to
- detect Movie Vision MPEG LITE.
- Remedies/Suggestions -
- 1. Execute the Movie Vision MPEG LITE Setup program to re-configure the
- settings. The software selected I/O Port Address MUST match the
- setting of the hardware jumper. Please refer to the user's manual for
- jumper description.
- 2. Make sure that the selected I/O Port Address is not sharing with
- other add-on cards (default address for Movie Vision MPEG LITE is
- 280-28F).
-
- 2. Q: The Message shows "Can't Initialize System [100]"
- A: This message indicates that the driver VFIC001D.386 is not loaded while
- starting up Windows or the available conventional memory under 640KB is
- not enough.
- Remedies/Suggestions -
- 1. Edit the system.ini file in Windows directory, go to the [386Enh]
- section, add the following line:
- device=c:\cinact\vfic001d.386
- 2. Try removing redendant TSR programs from memory.
-
- 3. Q: Error message "CD-ROM Memory Allocation Error.[0]" appears when you
- click on the CD button.
- A: This message indicates that either there is no CD-ROM disc in the CD-ROM
- drive or no CD-ROM drive is present. Check to make sure the CD-ROM drive
- is working (if it can read normal data Disc).
- Clicking the CD-i button too soon (immediately after the drive tray is
- closed) may also cause this error.
-
- 4. Q: The program cannot detect the CD format in the drive.
- A: 1. Make sure your CD-ROM drive is properly installed.
- 2. Add the /U switch to the smartdrv.exe in your sutoexec.bat file
- to disable caching of the CD-ROM drive, for example:
- C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE /X /U
- C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001
-
- 5. Q: The program cannot detect CD-i format.
- A: 1. If your CD-ROM drive is able to read Video CD and MPEG files
- (ISO 9660), check your CD-ROM drive specification to see if it
- supports CD-i.
- 2. Try loading the CD-ROM title again by opening then closing the
- CD-ROM drive tray in order for the drive to recognize CD-i.
-
- 6. Q: During playback, intermittent audio can be heard but there is no video
- display.
- A: There is a conflict between the IRQ of your MPEG card and another
- interface card.
- Remedies/Suggestions -
- 1. Take note of all add-on or interface cards in your PC system and
- make sure that all IRQ values do not conflict.
- 2. Try removing an interface card such as a sound card or a network
- card and try running the Movie Vision MPEG LITE again. If you do
- not encounter any problems, then you have to change either the IRQ
- setting of the Movie Vision MPEG LITE or your other add-on card.
-
- 7. Q: It plays CD-i and Video CD or MPEG files, but there is no sound?
- A: 1. If you are connecting the speakers directly to Movie Vision MPEG
- LITE, make sure your speakers are turned on and securely connected
- to the Audio Output Jack.
- 2. If you are connecting the audio output from Movie Vision MPEG LITE
- to the sound card's Line-in Jack, check the sound card's Mixer's
- Volume Control or Mute Control.
- 3. Try removing other add-on cards except the I/O and VGA cards to see
- if there is an I/O conflict. If Movie Vision MPEG LITE works well
- without the presence of other cards then there is an I/O conflict.
- Change Move Vision MPEG LITE's jumper setting on JP5 to 1,2 open;
- 3,4 close (or 1,2 open; 3,4 open) and configure the I/O port in
- Movie Vision MPEG LITE's setup program to 2A0H or 320H accordingly.
-
- NOTE: Always remember that hardware jumper settings should match
- the software configuration.
-
- 8. Q: The sound card produces abnormal sounds and the system hangs when
- exiting Windows.
- A: MPEG Decoder card is conflicting with a sound card. Normally, a sound
- card uses IRQ 5 with Sound Blaster mode and IRQ 11 with Windows Sound
- System Mode. Try changing IRQ settings.
-
- 9. Q: Windows Media Player does not detect the MPEG MCI driver or Video CD /
- CD-i MCI driver.
- A: Movie Visin MPEG LITE requires a MCI driver to execute some application
- programs, such as Media Player. When you run Media Player for the first
- time, it will check the SYSTEM.INI file for the device driver and update
- the MPLAYER.INI file. If the Media PLayer fails to detect this driver,
- you should try re-installing the Movie Vision MPEG LITE program. Take
- note that you have to select the correct device drivers when using Media
- Player such as CD-i or VideoCD or MPEG files.
-
- 11. Q: Should I connect the speakers to the Movie Vision MPEG LITE card or
- the sound card?
- A: 1. The audio output of Movie Vision MPEG LITE is sufficient to drive
- any 4 watt passive speakers. If you have an extra pair of speakers
- you can choose to connect this extra speaker directly to Movie
- Vision MPEG LITE.
- 2. If you only have one pair of speaker, you should connect the speaker
- to the sound card's Speaker-out jack. Use the supplied mini-stereo-
- head-phone cable to connect the Move Vision MPEG LITE's audio output
- to the sound card's Line-in Jack. Be sure to turn ON the sound
- card's Line-in volume using the sound card's Mixer Control so that
- you can hear the decoded MPEG audio from your speakers.
-
- 12. Q: MPEG playback is not stable in Windows 95.
- A: If you are using an IDE CD-ROM drive, try connecting the CD-ROM drive
- to your system's Enhanced Secondary IDE Interface instead of the sound
- card's. Be sure that the I/O port and IRQ settings of the secondary IDE
- interface are at 170H and 15 respectively.
-
- 13. Q: Can't play CD-i titles in Windows 95.
- A: We have found that raw reads of non-ISO 9660 CDs failed under CDFS
- (Windows 95's alternative to MSCDEX). This situation makes it
- impossible to play CD-i Digital Video Movie (GreenBook) titles in
- Windows 95. It is possible to work around this situation by
- reconfiguring your PC to use MSCDEX instead of CDFS, but there are some
- setbacks:
- - MSCDEX is slower than CDFS;
- - because the CD-ROM driver must be loaded in REAL mode, system
- performance is slower;
- - some CD-ROM drivers/drives may not work with GreenBook CD-i titles
- even after the reconfiguration; replacement of the CD-ROM driver/
- drive may be necessary to enable playback of GreenBook titles;
- - There may be other ill effects of which we are currently unaware.
