  4. This readme file contains information that have not been fully documented 
  5. elsewhere.When you have finished reading this file, choose "Exit" from the
  6. File menu to return to Program Manager.
  7.  
  8. 1. A 256-color super VGA or more colors display card is recommended.
  9.    It is OK if you are using a 16-color VGA card; however, color
  10.    quality of your images may be slightly inferior. Scantools can
  11.    compensate for that and display images as well as possible.
  12.  
  13. 2. You can run Scantools under Windows 3.1 or later version.
  14.  
  15. 3. Notes about using TWAIN-compliant scanners:
  16. (a)  In old systems, click OK after the scanning is completed will save
  17.      the scanned image and transfer it to Windows. The screen
  18.      also jumps to Windows screen.
  19. (b)  If you click Cancel right after the scanning is completed, the
  20.      screen will pop up a dialog box asking if you want to save the image
  21.      before quitting.
  22. (c)  In the present system, TWAIN source is changed in such a way that
  23.      you click OK after the scanning is completed, the system when
  24.      saves the scanned image but does NOT exit the current screen display.
  25. (d)  Using EXIT instead of Cancel If you choose EXIT right after you
  26.      have clicked OK, the screen will promptly jump to Windows.
  27.      If the OK button is not clicked or you perform some editing tasks such
  28.      as missing line compensation after the OK button is clicked, choosing
  29.      EXIT will cause the screen to pop up a dialog box asking if you want to
  30.      save. Choose YES if you want to save; otherwise choose NO.

  32. 4. Installing Scantools will create/add the following

  72. 5. ASPI Manager Function and Operation
  73.  
  74. 5.1 ASPI Manager Installation
  75.  
  76.       The ASPI manager was installed with the Scantools
  77.       to the CONFIG.SYS file:
  78.  
  79.        DEVICE=[PATH\]AS80DOS.SYS <Parameters>
  80.  
  81.       This line must proceed any other line that installs
  82.       drivers that depend on this ASPI manager for operation.
  83.  
  84.       Valid parameters are as follows:
  85.  
  86.     /b:<Base-Address> - The SCSI card will occupy 16-byte of I/O 
  87.         space. Set the proper jumper (J1,J2,J3) for the right
  88.         I/O port address starting from 280 to 350.

  102.     /d - Causes ASPI to displays a list of installed adapters
  103.         and drives at initialization.
  104.  
  105.     /c - ASPI compatibility mode enable. When this parameter is
  106.         used, the ASPI manager will make itself look
  107.         to any clients identical to the Adaptec 1542 ASPI
  108.         manager. This parameter is optional.
  109.  
  110.     /n[ASPI-Name] - ASPI name specification. [ASPI-Name] is
  111.         optional. When [ASPI-Name] string is
  112.         specified, the ASPI manager will use the
  113.         string as the name that is used to "OPEN" the
  114.         ASPI manager to get its entry address. If
  115.         [ASPI-Name] is NOT present, then the ASPI
  116.         manager will use a proprietary string different
  117.         from the standard SCSIMGR$. This parameter is
  118.         optional.
  119.  
  120.     /ir{ed#} - Enables/Disables SCSI Bus Reset issuance at
  121.         initialization and also determines length of
  122.         time that the manager waits following the issuance
  123.         of the SCSI Bus Reset before it scans for
  124.         devices. "d" disables SCSI Bus Reset at
  125.         initialization while "e" or a decimal number enable
  126.         it. If a decimal number is used to enable it,
  127.         then the number is exactly the amount of time
  128.         (in units of 50 msec) that will be waited following
  129.         the issuance of the SCSI Bus Reset before devices
  130.         are scanned for. If "e" is used to enable it,
  131.         then the manager will wait 2 seconds before scanning
  132.         for devices. This parameter is optional. Default is
  133.         equivalent to specifying "e".

  136. 5.2 ASPI Manager Messages
  137.  
  138.       During initialization and after printing its banner,      
  139.       if the "/d" option is included on the command line,
  140.       the ASPI manager will display a message for each
  141.       installed adapter that it finds as follows:
  142.  
  143.       Adapter # found at base address #.
  144.  
  145.       where the first "#" is the index of the adapter (0
  146.       for the first found, 1 for the second found, etc.)
  147.       and the second "#" is the base address of the
  148.       adapter in hex.
  149.  
  150.       Note that if an installed adapter's base address
  151.       does NOT appear in this series of messages, then
  152.       ASPI did not find it. This may be because it was
  153.       not installed properly, is malfunctioning, or
  154.       is not included on the command line with the
  155.       "/b" parameter.
  156.  
  157.       Following this list of installed adapters will
  158.       come a list of devices that the manager found in
  159.       its initial device scan. If an installed device does
  160.       NOT appear in this list, there may be a problem
  161.       in the SCSI connection or with the device itself
  162.     (e.g., device not powered-up).
  163.  
  164.       The following is a list of messages that indicate a
  165.       fatal condition that will cause ASPI manager to
  166.       abort installation:
  167.  
  168.       "No Adapters found!" -
  169.          Problem: No adapters could be found.
  170.         Solution: Check adapters, base-address-specifying
  171.         parameter ("/b") usage.
  172.  
  173.       "Too many ASPI Managers already installed!" -
  174.          Problem: Several ASPI managers have already been installed
  175.         and there is no room for another.
  176.         Solution: Remove one of the other ASPI managers to
  177.         make room for this ASPI manager.
  178.  
  179.       "Registration of Host Adaptor with ASPI Manager Failed!" -
  180.          Problem: Attempt to register the ASPI manager with
  181.         an already-installed ASPI Shell failed.
  182.         Solution: Move the "CONFIG.SYS" command line
  183.         installing this ASPI manager to a place
  184.         preceeding the command line installing the
  185.         ASPI manager containing the offending ASPI
  186.         Shell.
  187.  
  188.       "Invalid base address specified!"
  189.          Problem: Specified base address is invalid.
  190.         Solution: Fix the base address declaration on the
  191.         "CONFIG.SYS" command line.
