  10. This document contains information about HP DeskScan II v2.2 that
  11. has been updated after the regular documentation was printed.

  31.  Upgrading from an earlier version of DeskScan
  32.  ---------------------------------------------
  33.    The Setup program for DeskScan II version 2.2 automatically
  34.    upgrades earlier versions of DeskScan software. 
  35.  
  36.    Version 2.2 includes an HP ScanJet driver for ASPI- and CAM-
  37.    compatible SCSI cards.  This driver is for use ONLY with the
  38.    HP ScanJet 3c, IIc, IIcx, IIp or 3p scanners.  It will not function
  39.    correctly with the original ScanJet (HP9190A) or ScanJet Plus
  40.    scanners.
  41.  
  42.    If you already have an ASPI or CAM SCSI card, the new driver
  43.    provides the advantages of using one less interface card slot
  44.    and using less expansion ROM memory space.
  45.  
  46.    When you upgrade to version 2.2, the existing DESKSCAN.INI file
  47.    is saved as DESKSCAN.BAK.  If you have calibrated print paths
  48.    that you want to save from the previous version of DeskScan,
  49.    you can recover them from the DESKSCAN.BAK file (see the
  50.    "DESKSCAN.INI file" section below for more information on
  51.    recovering old calibration files).

  55.  Changes that DeskScan II Setup makes to CONFIG.SYS
  56.  --------------------------------------------------
  57.  
  58.    Setup will ask your permission before making any changes to
  59.    this file.  Most people will benefit most from allowing Setup
  60.    to make the changes that it suggests.
  61.    
  62.    If you are installing for the ScanJet Plus scanner, Setup adds
  63.    the following device driver line:

  65.       DEVICE=C:\DESKSCAN\SJDRIVER.SYS
  66.  
  67.    If you are installing on a system that uses the HP SCSI card
  68.    (HP P/N C1753-66500 or C1752-66500) shipped with the ScanJet
  69.    IIc and older IIp scanners, Setup adds the following device
  70.    driver line:

  72.       DEVICE=C:\DESKSCAN\SJII.SYS
  73.    
  74.    If you are installing on a system that uses the HP SCSI card
  75.    (HP P/N C2502-66500 or C2503-66500) shipped with the ScanJet
  76.    3c, IIcx, 3p and newer IIp scanners, Setup adds the following
  77.    device driver lines:

  79.       DEVICE=C:\DESKSCAN\MINI400I.SYS
  80.       DEVICE=C:\DESKSCAN\SJIIX.SYS
  81.  
  82.    If you are installing on a system that uses an ASPI- or CAM-
  83.    compatible SCSI card (that is already installed in you
  84.    computer), Setup adds the following device driver line:

  86.       DEVICE=C:\DESKSCAN\SJIIX.SYS

  90.  Changes that DeskScan II Setup makes to SYSTEM.INI
  91.  --------------------------------------------------
  92.  
  93.    Setup will ask your permission before making any changes to
  94.    this file.  Most people will benefit most from allowing Setup
  95.    to make the changes that it suggests.

  97.    If you are installing for the ScanJet Plus scanner, Setup will
  98.    not add any lines to this file.

  100.    If you are installing on a system that uses the HP SCSI card
  101.    shipped with the ScanJet IIc and older IIp scanners, Setup adds
  102.    a line in the [386Enh] section that is similar to the following
  103.    line:
  104.  
  105.       EMMExclude=c800-cbff           ;HP DeskScan v2.2
  106.  
  107.    The actual values in this line will depend on the switch
  108.    settings on the card.  The value of the switch settings can be
  109.    seen at boot time when the scanner driver is loaded (look
  110.    quickly, it goes by fast!).
  111.  
  112.    If you are installing on a system that uses the HP SCSI card
  113.    shipped with the ScanJet 3c, IIcx, 3p and newer IIp scanners,
  114.    Setup adds the following lines to the end of the [386Enh]
  115.    section:
  116.  
  117.       device=C:\DESKSCAN\WIN400I.386
  118.       device=C:\DESKSCAN\HPSCANR.386
  119.  
  120.    If you are installing on a system that uses an ASPI- or CAM-
  121.    compatible SCSI card (that is already installed in you
  122.    computer), Setup will not add any lines to this file.
  123.  
  124.    Note:  Setup will examine this file for old HP DeskScan 
  125.    modifications that are not valid for the new installation.
  126.    For example, Setup will remove references to WIN400I.386
  127.    and HPSCANR.386 if you are installing for the HP ScanJet Plus
  128.    scanner or the older HP SCSI card.
  129.  
  130.  
  131.  The DESKSCAN.INI file
  132.  ---------------------
  133.  
  134.    This is the DeskScan II "initialization" file.  It stores
  135.    DeskScan's default settings and all the customization you do
  136.    to DeskScan as you run the program.
  137.  
  138.    This file MUST reside in the DESKSCAN directory (or whatever
  139.    the name of the directory is where you installed DeskScan II).
  140.    
  141.    This file is not intended for modification by any program
  142.    other than DeskScan.  However, if you have created custom
  143.    calibrations for your printers or applications in an earlier
  144.    version of DeskScan, you can copy them to the new DESKSCAN.INI
  145.    file.
  146.  
  147.    To do this, open the old version (DESKSCAN.BAK) and the new
  148.    version (DESKSCAN.INI) in a plain-text editor.  Copy all the
  149.    lines under the [Calibrations] section in the .BAK file under
  150.    the [Calibrations] section in the .INI file.  Don't leave any
  151.    blank lines after the [Calibrations] line.

  153.    If you installed the new version of DeskScan II over the old
  154.    version, all the calibration files will be available.  If you
  155.    have installed DeskScan II into a new directory, you must copy
  156.    all the file names called out under the [Calibrations] section
  157.    from the old directory to the new.

  160.  The HPDS22.INI file
  161.  -------------------
  162.    
  163.    This file resides in the WINDOWS directory and is used so that
  164.    the HP DeskScan II TWAIN data source can find the main 
  165.    DeskScan II program file.  It maintains the directory name
  166.    where you installed DeskScan II.
  167.  
  168.    If, for some reason, this file becomes corrupted (DeskScan II
  169.    will tell you that this has happened through an error message),
  170.    simply copy the original version of this file in the DESKSCAN
  171.    directory to the WINDOWS directory.
  172.  
  173.    If you rename the DESKSCAN directory (or whatever the
  174.    directory name is where you installed DeskScan II), run
  175.    DeskScan II by double-clicking the icon in the DeskScan II
  176.    Program Manager Group BEFORE trying to run DeskScan II through
  177.    TWAIN.  This will allow DeskScan II to update the path in the
  178.    HPDS22.INI file.

  182.  Removing DeskScan II from your computer
  183.  ---------------------------------------
  184.  
  185.    Read UNINSTAL.TXT in the DESKSCAN directory to find all the
  186.    changes to your system made by the Setup program and how to
  187.    remove them.

  190.  
  191.  Scanning for ColorSmart printer drivers
  192.  ---------------------------------------
  193.  
  194.    DeskScan II includes a special calibration file to help you
  195.    achieve better colors when printing to your color printer
  196.    using a ColorSmart printer driver.  Select this calibration
  197.    file from within the Printer Calibration section of the Custom
  198.    Print Path dialog box.
  199.  
  200.    For best color matching, create a custom print path for your
  201.    printer and select "ColorSmart" in the Printer Calibration
  202.    combo box.
  203.    
  204.    If your printer is a 300 dpi device, we suggest that you enter
  205.    "300" in the "Drawings and   Halftones" text box and "100" in
  206.    the "Photos" text box.
  207.  
  208.    If you have a 600 dpi printer, we suggest that you enter "600"
  209.    in the "Drawings and Halftones" text box and "150" in the
  210.    "Photos" text box.  Remember to name and "Add" your new print
  211.    path before leaving the dialog.
  212.    
  213.    For general information about how to create a custom Print
  214.    Path for your printer that can be selected from the "Path"
  215.    combo box on the DeskScan II front panel, please refer to
  216.    chapter 2 in the DeskScan II User's Guide.

  219.  
  220.  Scaling images scanned with a transparency adapter
  221.  --------------------------------------------------
  222.  
  223.    The HP ScanJet 3c and IIcx scanners supports scanning from a
  224.    transparency adapter (the 3c /T and IIcx /T). 
  225.  
  226.    Under some circumstances while scaling an image, minor defects
  227.    common to all CCD scanners may become more noticeable.
  228.  
  229.    If you are confronted with this problem, scan the image at 50,
  230.    100, 150, 200, 300, 400, 600, or 800 dpi.  Then, transform the
  231.    image to the desired resolution by "resampling" it with an
  232.    image editor, such as Aldus PhotoStyler or Adobe PhotoShop.
  233.  
  234.    This will reduce or remove any CCD-related defects.

  238.  DeskScan II and Windows/NT
  239.  --------------------------
  240.  
  241.    DeskScan II version 2.2 is not currently supported under
  242.    Windows/NT.  However, if you would like to try running 
  243.    DeskScan II on your system with Windows/NT, please read
  244.    the README.NT file on the DeskScan II distribution disk for
  245.    information about how to install DeskScan II.
  246.

  269.  --------------------

  271.    DeskScan II version 2.2 is not currently supported under OS/2. 
  272.    Please call HP's Automated Support Access Program at

  292.  Updating HPSCANER.DLL
  293.  ---------------------
  294.  
  295.    When scanning via TWAIN from some applications, you may see the
  296.    following message:
  297.  
  298.       "DeskScan II cannot start scanning.
  299.       
  300.        An out-of-date version of the file 'HPSCANER.DLL' is in use
  301.        by another application.
  302.        
  303.        See README.TXT to learn how to correct this problem."
  304.  
  305.    If you see this message, the application that is calling
  306.    DeskScan II is using an out-of-date version of a file called
  307.    "HPSCANER.DLL".  The most appropriate version of this file for
  308.    use with DeskScan II is found in the DESKSCAN directory.  The
  309.    other application's version of this file must be updated before
  310.    it can correctly use DeskScan II.
  311.  
  312.    To update the other application's version, first close both
  313.    DeskScan II and the application (you may want to close all 
  314.    open applications, just to be safe).  Then, look in the 
  315.    application's directory for a file named "HPSCANER.DLL".
  316.    Copy the up-to-date version of this file from the DESKSCAN
  317.    directory into the application's directory.  Restart the
  318.    application, and again try to "Acquire..." (run 
  319.    DeskScan II via TWAIN).

  322.  
  323.  Making sure that TWAIN file versions are correct
  324.  ------------------------------------------------
  325.  
  326.    It is important to the operation of DeskScan II that old
  327.    versions of the DeskScan TWAIN data source files do not attempt
  328.    to launch DeskScan II.
  329.  
  330.    The best way to do this is to delete old TWAIN data source
  331.    files from your system, or move them into a safe place.
  332.  
  333.    To delete old versions, look into the WINDOWS\TWAIN directory.
  334.    Delete any file named HPDS21.DS or HPDSII.DS.
  335.  
  336.    To move the old files to a safe place, create a directory in
  337.    the WINDOWS directory called TWAINOLD.  Copy any file named
  338.    HPDS21.DS or HPDSII.DS from the WINDOWS\TWAIN directory into
  339.    WINDOWS\TWAINOLD.  Then delete the HPDS21.DS or HPDSII.DS file
  340.    from the WINDOWS\TWAIN directory.

  344.  Controlling I/O space reserved for the SJIIX.SYS device driver
  345.  --------------------------------------------------------------
  346.  
  347.    The HP ScanJet 3c, IIcx, 3p and newer IIp scanners use a newer SCSI
  348.    interface card than does the HP ScanJet IIc and some older IIp
  349.    scanners.  This newer card (HP P/N C1752-66500 [ISA] or 
  350.    C1753-66500 [MCA]) automatically re-configures itself when
  351.    another adapter card is put in the system.  The 3c/IIcx card uses
  352.    one on the following I/O spaces for data transfer:
  353.  
  354.               280     330
  355.               290     340
  356.               300     348
  357.               310     350
  358.  
  359.    If you want to choose the I/O space MINI400I.SYS uses, change
  360.    the following line in your CONFIG.SYS file:
  361.  
  362.        DEVICE=C:\DESKSCAN\MINI400I.SYS
  363.  
  364.    to:
  365.  
  366.        DEVICE=C:\DESKSCAN\MINI400I.SYS /SETADDR=<I/O space>
  367.  
  368.    Where <I/O space> is one the above mentioned spaces.
  369.  
  370.    Most users will not want to make this change.  It is only
  371.    necessary if one determines that the 3c/IIcx SCSI card is
  372.    interfering with another adapter card in one's system.
  373.

  375.  
  376.  How to install DeskScan II with Norton Desktop
  377.  ----------------------------------------------
  378.  
  379.    If you are running MS Windows using the Norton Desktop as the
  380.    shell, you can install DeskScan II using the default directory,
  381.    C:\DESKSCAN.  If you intend to use install to this default
  382.    directory, you don't need to read the rest of this section.
  383.  
  384.    If you want to install to different directory, there is an
  385.    incompatibility between DeskScan II Setup and the Norton
  386.    Desktop.  To install to a directory other than the default you
  387.    MUST first change the shell to PROGMAN.EXE before installing
  388.    DeskScan II!
  389.  
  390.    How to change the shell:
  391.  
  392.      - From Windows, run NOTEPAD.EXE and open the SYSTEM.INI file
  393.        (which is in the \WINDOWS directory).
  394.      - In the [boot] section you will find a line that reads:
  395.        shell=ndw.exe
  396.      - Make a copy of this line and insert a ";" (semicolon) as the
  397.        first character in one of the two lines.
  398.      - Change the second copy to read:
  399.        shell=progman.exe
  400.      - Save the file, close NOTEPAD and restart Windows.
  401.  
  402.    After DeskScan II has been successfully installed, you can
  403.    switch back to Norton Desktop by following these steps:
  404.  
  405.      - From Windows, run NOTEPAD.EXE and open the SYSTEM.INI file
  406.        (which is in the \WINDOWS directory).
  407.      - In the [boot] section, find the copy of the line with the
  408.        semicolon that includes "shell=ndw.exe".  Remove the semi-
  409.        colon.
  410.      - Find the copy of the line you made that includes 
  411.        "shell=progman.exe".
  412.        Delete it.
  413.      - Save the file, close NOTEPAD and restart Windows.
