- Microsoft..............Windows for Workgroups v3.1
-
- This document applies to the EtherExpress(tm) 16, 16TP, 16C, FLASH,
- FLASH TP, FLASHC, MCA, and MCA/TP. It contains notes for installing
- the NDIS driver using the Windows for Workgroups installation program.
-
- This document (or an updated version) is also available on FaxBACK,
- document #6405.
-
- In general we recommend that you use the latest drivers that we have
- available. The latest NDIS driver is available is on our BBS. Our
- BBS number is 1-503-645-6275 using 8 databits, no parity, and 1 stop bit.
- Choose (4) File Downloads off of the main menu. Then choose option 10 (*)
- Global File Search and Download. The name of the file is NDIS16.EXE.
- Please see note #3 in this document for further information on file
- size, version, time and date etc.
-
- INTRODUCTION:
- -------------
- The setup and configuration of the EtherExpress card is integrated
- into the Windows for Workgroups setup program (See Note 1 below). If an
- EtherExpress card is installed in the computer when you run Setup, it will
- detect the card and display the following message:
-
- Windows Setup
- Windows Setup has detected the Intel EtherExpress 16 or 16TP network
- adapter in your computer. Do you want to install the driver for this
- adapter now? YES NO
-
- The Windows for Workgroups Setup program does not read the EtherExpress
- EPROM for preassigned values. However, it does scan the computer for
- conflicts. It will set the Keyword values in the Protocol.ini to their
- defaults unless it finds a conflict or if you manually select a value. If
- there is a conflict with the default value it will continue until it finds
- the first unused value.
-
- For example, if the EtherExpress is set to IRQ5 before you run the Windows
- for Workgroups Setup, and IRQ3 is unused, it will set the IRQ to 3 unless
- you tell it differently. This is really only a problem if the
- EtherExpress card is being used with another network OS before Windows
- installs.
-
- Windows for Workgroups configures these options on the EtherExpress card:
-
- IRQ: Default is 3
- IOCHRDY: Default is Late
- IOADDRESS: Default is 300
- TRANSCEIVER: Default is thin net (BNC/COAX)
-
- Example PROTOCOL.INI for the Etherexpress card:
-
- [network.setup]
- version=0x3100
- netcard=ms$ee16,1,MS$EE16
- transport=ms$netbeui,MS$NETBEUI
- lana0=ms$ee16,1,ms$netbeui
-
- [protman]
- DriverName=PROTMAN$
- PRIORITY=MS$NETBEUI
-
- [MS$EE16]
- DriverName=EXP16$
- IOADDRESS=0x300
- IRQ=5
- IOCHRDY=Late
- TRANSCEIVER=Thin Net (BNC/COAX)
-
- [MS$NETBEUI]
- DriverName=netbeui$
- SESSIONS=5
- NCBS=10
- BINDINGS=MS$EE16
- LANABASE=0
-
- NOTE 1:
- The EtherExpress set up program, SOFTSET, should not be used to modify
- board settings. Instead use the Windows Control Panel to implement board
- changes. Using SOFTSET will not change the appropriate settings under
- Windows for Workgroups, specifically the protocol.ini. Using the Control
- Panel to alter the boards setting will do both - change the settings for
- the board and update the protocol.ini. To change to 8 bit operation, use
- the Control Panel to set I/O Channel Ready to "Never" or edit the
- Protocol.ini file in the [MS$EE16] section. You may also edit the
- protocol.ini to change the interrupt and i/o settings but this is only for
- experienced users. It is usually easier to make the changes in the Control
- Panel so when in doubt use this method.
-
- NOTE 2:
- You must have a terminated cable attached to the EtherExpress card
- when you start Windows for Workgroups. If you do not, Windows for
- Workgroups will hang.
-
- NOTE 3:
- If you purchased the EtherExpress Card and it didn't come in a bundle
- with Workgroup for Windows, it may be necessary to update the EXP16.DOS
- file in the C:\Windows directory. The driver should be version 2.26
- or later (date of 12-01-92 or later). It should be on the Intel driver
- disk in the NDIS subdirectory off of the root directory. Simply copy
- EXP16.DOS to the C:\Windows directory after the WFW install. If you
- need to obtain this driver simply refer to the BBS instructions at the
- top of this document.
-
- EtherExpress MCA/MCA TP
-
- Install the EtherExpress MCA/MCA TP adapter using the IBM System Reference
- Diskette. Note the settings used to configure the card. These setting
- must be used when setting up the Windows for Workgroups program.
-
- Run the Windows for Workgroups Setup program. It will detect the card and
- display the following message:
-
- Windows Setup
- Windows Setup has detected the Intel EtherExpress 16 or 16TP network
- adapter in your computer. Do you want to install the driver for this
- adapter now? YES NO
-
- Even though this indicates the EtherExpress 16 or 16TP adapter, answer YES
- to continue. (The EtherExpress MCA/MCA TP uses the same drivers as the
- EtherExpress 16/16TP adapter.)
-
- Choose the adapter configuration that was set with the System Reference
- Diskette.
-
- If the setting for the Etherexpress MCA/MCA TP card need to be changed,
- they must be changed with the System Reference Diskette and in the Windows
- for Workgroup program.
-
- NOTE 1: When using both the EtherExpress MCA card and EtherExpress 16
- card, MCADIAGS's option for ON NETWORK DIAGNOSTICS does not work
- between these two cards. If the EtherExpress 16 is set as a
- responder the EtherExpress MCA card cannot see it. If the MCA
- is set as a responder the EtherExpress 16 cannot see it.
-
- NOTE 2: If you are having trouble with the Etherexpress MCA card it may
- be necessary to download E16ADF.EXE from the Intel BBS. This
- new ADF file corrects a problem in setup with choosing the proper
- connector type. Please refer to the top of this document for
- downloading instructions. This file should be copied to the root of
- the Intel Etherexpress disk and extracted. Just type in "e16adf".
- Then use the IBM Reference Disk to copy the new ADF file from the
- Intel Etherexpress disk to the Reference Disk and then rerun the
- configuration process.
