  20. Data transfer can occur very slowly when you are reading a video CD in an
  21. IDE CD-ROM drive if the following conditions are true:
  22.  
  23.  - The IDE CD-ROM drive is configured as the slave device on an IDE
  24.    channel, with another device (such as a hard disk) configured
  25.    as the master device on the chain.
  26.  
  27.  - You are using protected-mode drivers to access the IDE devices,
  28.    including the CD-ROM drive.
  29.  
  30. For example, playing an MPEG file from a video CD can cause the computer
  31. to seem to stop responding (hang) due to the very slow rate at which data
  32. is being read from the CD.
  33.  
  34. CAUSE
  35. =====
  36.  
  37. There is a problem in the Ios.vxd file that causes excessive seeks on data
  38. requests from the CD-ROM drive under these conditions. This results in
  39. degradation in the rate of data transfer from the drive.
  40.  
  41. RESOLUTION
  42. ==========
  43.  
  44. Microsoft has released an updated version of the Ios.vxd file that
  45. corrects this problem. The file is:
  46.  
  47.    IOS.VXD version 4.00.953 (3/19/96, 68,825 bytes) and later
  48.  
  49. To install the updated Ios.vxd file, follow these steps:
  50.  
  51. 1. Download the IOSUPD.EXE file from one of the online services listed
  52.    below to an empty folder.
  53.  
  54. 2. In My Computer or Windows Explorer, double-click the IOSUPD.EXE file
  55.    you downloaded in step 1.
  56.  
  57. 3. Follow the instructions on your screen.
  58.  
  59. You can find IOSUPD.EXE, a self-extracting file, on the following services:

  61.  - Microsoft's World Wide Web Site on the Internet
  62.       On the www.microsoft.com home page, click the Support icon.
  63.       Click Knowledge Base, and select Windows 95 as the product.
  64.       Enter kbfile IOSUPD.EXE, and click GO!
  65.       Open the article, and click the button to download the file.

  69.       Change to the Softlib/Mslfiles folder.
