  3. What's New for the Windows98 Startup Disk?
  4.  
  5. The Startup Disk has changed significantly for Windows 98. The following
  6. items are new for Windows98.
  7.  
  8. - Multi-Config Start Menu
  9. - Real-Mode IDE & SCSI CD-ROM support
  10. - EBD.CAB file
  11. - RAMDrive
  12. - New Extract Utility - Ext.exe

  14. 1) Multi-Config Start Menu

  16. If you boot your computer using the new Windows98 Startup Disk, a boot menu
  17. appears allowing you the option to load drivers for the most common CD-Rom
  18. drives or perform a normal clean boot.

  20. After you make your selection, the Config.sys file loads the appropriate
  21. CD-ROM driver (if selected) and then loads a 2MB RAMDrive. The RAMDrive is
  22. used to store all the diagnostic tools necessary to T-shoot the most common
  23. problems.

  27. The RAMdrive may cause your CD-Rom to pushed back 1 drive letter. If your
  28. CD-Rom is usually drive D:, it will now be Drive E:.

  31. 2) Real-Mode CD-ROM support
  32. =================================
  33. The Windows 98 Statup Disk includes generic ATAPI IDE & SCSI CD-ROM drivers
  34. that allow your CD-ROM to function at Dos when the Windows98 GUI is not
  35. available.

  37. *Note*, not all CD-Rom drives are supported. If your CD-Rom drive does not
  38. function with these drivers, you must use the drivers that came with your
  39. CD-Rom drive.

  42. 3) EBD.CAB file
  43. =================================
  44. The Ebd.cab file is a compressed file whose contents are extracted to the
  45. Ramdrive during the startup process. The table below identifies the files
  46. in the Ebd.cab file.

  63. 4) Creating a RAMDrive
  64. =================================
  65. The RAMDrive is created during the processing of the Config.sys file and is
  66. 2MB in size. The Ramdrive is created using system RAM to emulate a physical
  67. Hard Disk. Without creating the RAMdrive, we would not have enough space on
  68. a single 1.44 meg floppy disk to contain all the diagnostic tools as well
  69. as the CD-Rom drivers.

  72. Since the RAMDrive is created during the processing of the Config.sys file
  73. and uses System RAM, it is only temporary. It will disappear if you restart
  74. your computer normally.

  77. 4) New Extract Command - Ext.exe
  78. ===================================
  79. The Ext.exe command is a new and simple extract command designed to work
  80. in conjuction with Extract.exe. Just type 'Ext' from the command prompt. You
  81. are then asked to enter the path to the Windows cab files, enter the name(s)
  82. of the file(s) you want to extract and enter the path to the directory to
  83. extract the files to. The cab files will scroll up the screen until the file
  84. is found.
