-
- A Monitor Options dialog has been added to the STB Vision Control
- Panel. It allows you to select your monitor and refresh rate limits
- and adjust image centering from within Windows, without having to use
- an external DOS utility. The Monitor Options dialog is accessed from
- the STB Vision Control Panel's 'Options' menu.
-
- Status Display
-
- A configuration Status Display has been added to the STB Vision
- Control Panel. It displays detailed configuration information that
- is useful in diagnosing any problems you may experience. The Status
- Display is accessed from the STB Vision Control Panel's 'Help' menu.
-
- More Virtual Desktop Support
-
- Support for the virtual desktop at 16, 32768, 65535, and 16.8 M
- colors has been added. In previous releases the virtual desktop was
- only supported at 256 colors.
-
- Dynamic Virtual Desktop Size Switching
-
- This allows you to change your virtual desktop size without
- restarting Windows. Simply select the new virtual desktop size on
- the STB Vision Control Panel and select 'Ok' to activate it.
-
- Dialog and Message Box Centering Control

- 5. Installation and Configuration Using the STB Vision
- Installation Utility and the STB Vision Control Panel
- --------------------------------------------------------
-
- The STB Vision Installation Utility, SETUP.EXE, is used to install STB
- Vision. The Installation Utility is a Windows-based application with a
- simple and easy to use dialog and message box interface.
-
- To install STB Vision you must run SETUP.EXE by selecting 'Run' from
- the Program Manager or File Manager 'File' menu, typing in the path
- to SETUP.EXE in the 'Command line' edit field, and then selecting
- 'OK'. When SETUP.EXE displays its initial dialog, select 'OK' to
- confirm that it is going to install STB Vision into the correct
- Windows directory. SETUP.EXE copies and expands the release files
- into the appropriate locations within your Windows and Windows System
- directories, displaying its progress as it proceeds. SETUP.EXE
- notifies you when the file installation phase has been completed, it
- asks if you wish to create an 'STB Vision' Program Manager group, and
- finally it starts the STB Vision Control Panel, where you select your
- monitor and initial display setting. When you select 'OK' from the
- Control Panel, Windows is restarted and your selected display setting
- is active.
-
- The STB Vision Control Panel, STBVISN.EXE, is used to configure STB
- Vision. The Control Panel is a Windows-based application with a simple
- and easy to use dialog and menu interface.
-
- The STB Vision Control Panel main dialog is where you select your
- display setting. A display setting consists of a particular
- combination of Colors, Virtual Desktop Size, Resolution, and Font Size.
- After you have selected a new setting, select 'OK' to activate it. You
- can optionally save settings by name and later recall them, making it
- easy to switch between the different settings you use frequently.
-
- You can select options for the Multiple Desktop Manager, Zoom Window,
- Bird's Eye Window, and the Control Panel itself from the options
- dialogs that are available from the Control Panel 'Options' menu.
- These options include the hotkeys used for direct invocation. You can
- invoke the Multiple Desktop Manager, Zoom Window, and the Bird's Eye
- Window from the Control Panel 'Features' menu.
-
- Context-sensitive help information is available in both the STB Vision
- Installation Utility and the STB Vision Control Panel by selecting
- 'Help'. The README.STB file containing information specific to your
- STB product can be viewed by selecting 'ReadMe'.
-
- STB Vision provides support for the English, French, German, Italian,
- and Spanish languages. For languages other than these, STB Vision
- text will appear in English. Also, the installation process differs
- for these non-supported languages in that STB Vision does not copy
- font files onto these systems (i.e. the current fonts are retained).
- The user's system must have the appropriate font files installed
- and properly configured prior to installing STB Vision.
-
-
- 6. Installation and Configuration Using Microsoft Windows Setup
- ---------------------------------------------------------------
-
- STB Vision supports driver-only installation and configuration with
- Microsoft Windows Setup, either from the DOS prompt or from within
- Windows. The executable file for Windows Setup is named SETUP.EXE
- and is located in the Windows directory.
-
- The STB Vision release for a given product contains an appropriate
- OEMSETUP.INF file that supplies the information required by Windows
- Setup for driver installation. STB Vision must be installed with
- the STB Vision Installation Utility prior to performing driver-only
- configuration with Windows Setup. The OEMSETUP.INF file from the
- STB Vision Installation diskette cannot be used directly with
- Windows Setup for driver configuration.
-
- Driver configuration with Windows Setup is performed by selecting
- the particular display driver configuration you wish to run in.
-
- If you perform a driver-only installation with Windows Setup then the
- STB Vision Control Panel and advanced features are not available. You
- can subsequently run the STB Vision Installation Utility to install STB
- Vision and enable its features, if you choose to do so.
-
-
- 7. How to Select a Monitor and Set Vertical Refresh Rates
- ---------------------------------------------------------
-
- When you install STB Vision with the STB Vision Installation Utility
- and configure with the STB Vision Control Panel you must select your
- monitor and vertical refresh rates using the Monitor Options dialog.
- When the STB Vision Installation Utility starts the STB Vision
- Control Panel the Monitor Options dialog is the first dialog you will
- see. Select your monitor (or a compatible monitor) from the list of
- available monitors. To access the Monitor Options dialog after
- installation select 'Monitor' from the STB Vision Control Panel
- 'Options' menu. You may also fine-tune refresh rates on the Monitor
- Options dialog. For each resolution you will run at you may specify
- the refresh rate limit. STB Vision will run at the highest available
- refresh rate for the resolution and color depth you have selected.
-
- When you configure with Windows Setup you must select a monitor and
- set the vertical refresh rates for each resolution you will run in
- using the DOS utility specific to your product. This utility is
- included on your 'Driver Utility' disk. For instructions on how to
- locate and use this utility consult your printed documentation and
- the readme and help information on the 'Driver Utility' disk.
-
-
- 8. Updating Existing Display Drivers
- ------------------------------------
-
- You can update your existing display drivers by installing this release
- "over the top of" your previous release. This will overwrite any
- previously existing files that have the same name as files in this
- release. Previously existing files that do not have the same names as
- files in this release will not be overwritten and will not be deleted.
- You can manually delete these files if you choose to do so.
-
- One issue that frequently occurs when updating existing display drivers
- or installing drivers for a new display adapter is the issue of
- obsolete OEMSETUP.INF files remaining in your Windows System directory.
- These files are used by Windows Setup to produce the list of display
- settings from which you may select. If you have obsolete OEMSETUP.INF
- files in your Windows System directory, Windows Setup may show the
- display settings from those files in the list of display settings. If
- you select one of these obsolete display settings your Windows display
- configuration will likely be invalid and you will not be able to run
- Windows until the problem is corrected. You can prevent this problem
- from occuring by inspecting the display device OEM*.INF files in your
- Windows System directory and deleting those that are obsolete. You
- must be careful to not delete INF files that are not obsolete or that
- are not display device specific. Should you delete one of these files
- that is not obsolete or is not display device specific, you will
- adversely affect your ability to change your Windows configuration.
-
- Another issue that frequently occurs when updating existing display
- drivers or installing drivers for a new display adapter is the issue of
- having too many OEMSETUP.INF files remaining in your Windows System
- directory. When this occurs Windows Setup will produce an "out of
- memory" error when you attempt to configure a new display setting when
- running Windows Setup from DOS (i.e. outside of Windows). The solution
- to this problem is to delete any obsolete display device OEM*.INF
- files.
-
-
- 9. Miscellaneous Product-Specific Utilities
- -------------------------------------------
-
- The STB Power Star screen saver, SSPSTAR.SCR, can be used to control
- the power consumption of your monitor. It provides multiple levels
- of power savings control. SSPSTAR.SCR is installed into your Windows
- directory by the STB Vision Installation Utility. You can enable and
- configure SSPSTAR.SCR from the 'Desktop' control of the Windows
- Control Panel.
-
-
- 10. Miscellaneous Product-Specific Issues
- -----------------------------------------
-
- Installing super vga (800x600 16 color) driver through Windows Setup
-
-
- You must edit the system.ini file if Windows Setup is used to
- install the super vga (supervga.drv) driver. The following line
- must be added to the [Display] section of the system.ini in order
- for Windows to successfully load the driver.
-
- [Display]
- SVGAMode=106
-
- The editing of any file is not required if you use the STB Vision
- installation utility, or Windows Setup and install any display
- driver other than the super vga driver.
-
-
- Using SSPSTAR.EXE while system is in a power conversation mode
-
-
- It is advisable not to use SSPSTAR.EXE (the STB provided screen
- saver) while you have your system in a power saving (green) mode.
- This causes a conflict as both the system and SSPSTAR.EXE vie for
- access to the same subsystem, thereby producing undesired results.
-
-
- 11. Recovering from an Invalid Windows Display Configuration
- ------------------------------------------------------------
-
- The STB Vision Installation Utility and the STB Vision Control Panel
- are Windows-based applications that run under Windows. Thus you
- could have difficulty reconfiguring or reinstalling STB Vision if the
- current Windows display configuration is invalid. When the Windows
- display configuration is invalid, Windows is either unable to run or
- you cannot see what it is displaying, and therefore you are unable to
- run STB Vision SETUP.EXE and STBVISN.EXE under Windows.
-
- There are many things that can cause an invalid display driver
- configuration. One of the most common causes is switching to a
- monitor that does not support the currently configured resolution or
- vertical refresh rate without first running the proper utility to
- configure for the new monitor.
-
- The key to recovering from an invalid Windows display configuration
- is to temporarily reconfigure Windows to use the standard VGA display
- driver. First, run Windows Setup (SETUP.EXE in the Windows
- directory) from the DOS command prompt and select 'VGA' for the
- 'Display' setting. You can then run Windows and run the STB Vision
- Control Panel, STBVISN.EXE, to reconfigure STB Vision, or run the STB
- Vision Installation Utility, SETUP.EXE, to reinstall STB Vision.
- Then specify a valid display setting and select to restart Windows.
-
-
- 12. The STB Vision Configuration Files
- --------------------------------------
-
- The STB Vision configuration is stored in the STBVISN.INI,
- STBMONS.INI, and STBMODES.INI files. The STB Vision Installation
- Utility installs these files into your Windows directory. When you
- use the STB Vision Control Panel to change your STB Vision
- configuration (i.e. display setting and feature options) the
- STBVISN.INI file is updated to reflect your changes. The STBMONS.INI
- and STBMODES.INI files are read-only.
-
- You should not manually edit or delete these files, as by doing so
- will corrupt your STB Vision configuration. Should you accidentally
- corrupt your STB Vision configuration, you may be able to correct it
- by running the STB Vision Control Panel and selecting a new display
- setting. If this does not correct the problem you must reinstall STB
- Vision with the STB Vision Installation Utility.
-
-
- 13. The STB Vision Display Meta Driver
- --------------------------------------
-
- Much of the support for the STB Vision advanced features and hotkeys
- is implemented in STBVISN.DRV. When you install STB Vision with the
- STB Vision Installation Utility, STBVISN.DRV is installed into your
- Windows System directory and your Windows SYSTEM.INI file is modified
- to make STBVISN.DRV the active display driver.
-
- You should not manually edit the display driver configuration in the
- SYSTEM.INI file, as this could corrupt your STB Vision configuration.
- Should you accidentally corrupt your STB Vision configuration, you may
- be able to correct it by running the STB Vision Control Panel and
- selecting a new display setting. If this does not correct the problem
- you must reinstall STB Vision with the STB Vision Installation Utility.
