- 0) NOTICES
- ----------
-
- 0.0 This utility is freeware and is guaranteed to do nothing but take up HD
- space. By using this software you agree to not hold the authors
- responsible for anything.
-
- 0.1 It is recommended that you upgrade to at least 1.666 version of DooM
- and/or DooM ][.
-
- 1) INSTALLATION
- --------------
-
- 1.0 This installation proceedure may be done in a DOS multitasking
- environment, such as Windows, so that you can follow the instructions
- set out below. But remember to quit multitasking before running DooM.
-
- 1.1 Please DELETE the following files from previous versions of DooM
- Assistant from you DooM and/or DooM ][ directories. Don't be concerned
- if you don't have some of these files.
-
- DA.BAT
- DA.CFG
- DA.RSP
- DADOOM.BAT
- DASSIST.DOC
- DASSIST.EXE
- DASSIST.WDB
- DA.WDB
-
- 1.2 Rename DA.PDB to DASSIST.PDB if you have this file.
- Rename DA.CFG to DASSIST.CFG if you have this file.
-
- 1.3 Unarchive DASST166.??? into your DooM and/or DooM ][ directory.
- Overwrite every file except DASSIST.PDB (Phone Number Database) and
- DASSIST.CFG (DooM Assistant Configuration File) if the
- archiver prompts you for a response.
-
- 1.4 If your PWADs are in a separate directory besides the DOOM.EXE or
- DOOM2.EXE then edit DASSIST.CFG as follows:
-
- Doom1PwadsDir= <Full Path to DooM I PWADs Directory>
- Doom2PwadsDir= <Full Path to DooM ][ PWADs Directory>
-
- 1.5 Type DA and hit return.
-
- 1.6 If you are using the advanced WAD archiving feature (see Advanced
- Features below) you will be prompted by a message something like:
-
- Examine AGOODWAD.ZIP for PWAD details?
- [y,N,a,q]
-
- Press 'A'
-
- 1.7 If you are familiar with DooM and DooM shells then the screen you are
- presented with (after examining you PWADs) should be self explanatory.
- If you are unfamiliar with anything then read on or quit you DOS
- multitasking environment and give it a go.
-
-
- 2) UNIVERSAL FUNCTION KEYS
- --------------------------
-
- 2.0 Universal Function Keys work from within any window. They are
-
- F2 - Phone DataBase (Select, Edit, Delete phone numbers)
- F10 - Run DooM or DooM ][
- Space - Forward Cycle, Enable/Disable, Tag/Untag
- Left Arrow - Backward Cycle, Enable/Disable, Tag/Untag
- Right Arrow - Forward Cycle, Enable/Disable, Tag/Untag
- Down Arrow - Move Selector Down
- Up Arrow - Move Selector Up
- TAB - TAB to next window (See Chapter 3.0)
- Shift-TAB - TAB to previous window (See Chapter 3.0)
-
-
- 3) DOOM ASSISTANT SETTINGS
- --------------------------
-
- 3.0 The left half of the DooM Assistant screen is divided into smaller windows
- which group together related DooM settings.
-
- You can cycle through each setting by using the space, enter or
- left and right arrow keys.
-
- Use the up and down arrow keys to move to another setting.
-
- Lets run through each option:
-
- 3.1 Level Settings
- ------------------
-
- 3.1.1 Level Settings determine what Episode and/or Map you wish to start
- playing DooM from. DooM I (or just plain DooM) is divided up into
- 3 Episodes and each of these 3 episodes is divided up into 9 Maps.
- This is usually written in the short form E1M2 ie Episode 1, Map 2.
- In DooM both Episode and Map are changeable.
-
- DooM ][ on the other hand is divided up into 32 Maps without the use
- of Episodes. The short form is written as MAP06 ie Map 6. Therefore
- only Map is changeable.
-
- This explaination should describe there the first 2 settings.
-
- Starting DooM in another besides the initial level is called Warping.
-
- 3.1.2 The third option 'Level Timer' is used in DEATHMATCH games to end
- each level after so many minutes.
-
- 3.2 Skill Settings
- ------------------
-
- 3.2.0 Skill Settings are used to set the difficulty of play you wish to
- encounter.
-
- 3.2.1 Skill Level is used to determine how many enemy monsters you wish to
- encounter. 'No Skill Level' will equate to no monsters at all and
- 'NIGHTMARE!' means that the monsters will come back to life (respawn)
- after 30 seconds of being dead! The settings in between only
- affect the amount of monsters encountered, who do not respawn.
-
- 3.2.2 Monster setting allows you to have 'No Monsters, 'Normal' Monsters, or
- 'RESPAWNING!' monsters regardless of the settings in Skill Level (see
- 3.2.1)
-
- 3.2.3 Turbo allows you to increase or decrease your player's responsiveness
- 'Disabled' or '100%' is normal whilst below 100% would be slow and
- above 100% would be faster and more responsive.
-
- 3.2.4 Fast Monsters may be 'Disabled' normal or 'Enabled' where the monsters
- shoot and move faster.
-
- 3.3 Multi-Player Settings
- -------------------------
-
- 3.3.0 Multi-Player Settings are used for playing DooM with another person
- by serial cable or modem connection. (DooM Assistant does not support
- DooM games via a computer network)
-
- 3.3.1 Game Type allows you to select a single or multiplayer game.
- The types are:
-
- 3.3.1.1 Single Player - just you.
-
- 3.3.1.2 Cooperative - Two players connected by modem or serial cable
- working cooperatively to kill the evil
- monsters.
-
- 3.3.1.3 DEATHMATCH - Two players connected by modem or serial cable
- in a death match to kill they other the most.
- This Game Type does not have respawning
- ammunition or items and therefore the
- ammunition may run out before you are
- finnished (See 3.3.1.3 DEATHMATCH 2.0)
-
- 3.3.1.4 DEATHMATCH 2.0 - The same as DEATHMATCH except that ammunition
- and items will respawn after 30 seconds for
- continued game play.
-
- ==============================================================================
- NOTE: If you choose a Game Type other than Single Player you will need to
- check all the settings in the Multi-Player Settings window and verify
- that they are correct. See the rest of Chapter 3.3.
- ==============================================================================
-
- 3.3.2 Connect Method tells SERSETUP.EXE (a DooM utility that looks after
- 2 player serial connection games) in what manner you will connect to
- the other players PC.
-
- 3.3.2.1 Dial - means that you will be dialing the other
- PC via modem connected to your serial port.
- They will therefore need to select Answer.
-
- 3.3.2.2 Already Connected - means the the two PCs are already connected
- via a null modem cable (a null modem cable
- is a cable that fools two PCs into thinking
- that they are communicating with each other
- via modem) or you have already established
- a connection via other terminal software.
-
- 3.3.2.3 Answer - means that you will be answering the other
- PC via modem connected to your serial port.
- They will therefore need to select Dial.
-
- 3.3.3 Modem Port is used to specify what COM Port your modem or null cable is
- connected to. ie COM1, COM2, COM3 or COM4.
-
- 3.3.4 Baud Rate specifies the serial PORT speed and MODEM speed. The minimum
- Baud Rate is 9600 and therefore your modem must be able to send and
- data receive at the speed without error correction and data compression
- enabled.
-
- NOTE: You will most likely need to edit the MODEM.CFG file in the DOOM
- directory before making your first modem connect. The first line of
- the file is an initialization string and it will need to be edited to:
-
- * Turn off error correction.
- * Turn off data compression.
- * Lock your modem at 9600 Baud Rate for 9600 BPS modems
- " " " " 9600 Baud Rate for 12000 BPS modems
- " " " " 14400 Baud Rate for 14400 BPS modems
- " " " " 19200 Baud Rate for 28800 BPS modems
-
- * Turn off all hardware and software flow control.
-
- (Please consult your modem documentation or latest DooM FAQ)
-
- 3.3.5 Phone # is used to select the persons phone number that you wish to
- connect to. The first line shows the number that will be dialed and
- the second line shows their name. Select F2 to edit the Phone DataBase.
-
- 3.3.5.1 Phone DataBase
- To add a new number (or delete an old number) select F2 at anytime.
- Use the up and down arrow keys to highlight a number or blank space.
- Hit Enter to edit, Space to select it for dialing or Esc to abort.
-
- 3.4 Other Settings
- ------------------
-
- 3.4.0 Other Settings covers miscellaneous settings.
-
- 3.4.1 Saved Games allows you to run DooM from a previously saved game.
- You will need to be sure to load the same PWAD and Map/Episode.
- DooM can hold upto 6 Saved Game positions.
-
- 3.4.2 Use PWads. This feature is the heart of DooM Assistant.
- To play External Patch WADs this must be 'Enabled'. (See Chapter 4)
- To play ordinary DooM 'Disable' this setting. When you re-'Enable'
- Use PWads those PWADs that you had tagged previously will be remembered!
- ==============================================================================
- ADVANCED FEATURES
- ==============================================================================
-
- 4) EXTERNAL PWADS - THE PWADS WINDOW
- ------------------------------------
-
- 4.0 The wonderful people at id Software have written DooM so that it can also
- play external or patch WADs written by other authors. A Patch WAD (or
- PWAD) is usually a whole new level of DooM and may include new monsters,
- items, weapons, graphics, sounds & music. To Run DooM with a PWAD you must
- have Use Pwads 'Enabled' (See Chapter 3.4.2)
-
-
- 4.1 The right-hand window gives a detailed listing of your PWADs and relevant
- information. This window is called the PWADs window.
-
- 4.1.1 The heading of PWADs window indicates the number of PWADs tagged. This
- is useful incase you fail to realise that a PWAD is tagged on a page
- not visible to you. (See Chapter 4.1.6)
-
- 4.1.2 The first column lists all the PWADs (WAD extension) and ZIP compressed
- files (ZIP extension). It is assumed by DooM Assistant that all ZIPs
- contain a WAD (See Chapter 5).
-
- 4.1.3 The second column contains the Episode/Map where the PWAD starts from.
-
- 4.1.4 The third column contains the highest Episode/Map that the PWAD (or
- PWADs, in the case that more than one is found in a ZIP - See
- Chapter 5). If only one Episode/Level is found then the second column
- is intentionally left blank.
-
- 4.1.5 The fourth and final column contains flags indicating the Game Type
- (See Chapter 3.3.1) that the PWAD is designed for. These flags indicate:
-
- S - Single Player (ie. Player 1 start + monsters)
- C - Cooperative (ie. Player 1 & 2 starts + monsters)
- D - DEATHMATCH & DEATHMATCH 2.0 (ie. DEATHMATCH player starts)
-
- 4.1.6 If you have more than one page worth of PWADs to display a scroll bar
- will appear on the right border indicating what page you are viewing of
- you list of PWADs. The highlighted blue box at the top of the screen
- indicates the top page. The format is the same as the Windows scroll
- bar.
-
- 4.1.7 If your PWADs are kept in another directory besides the directory where
- DooM Assistant is then the PWAD directory will be indicated at the
- bottom of the window. (If you wish to edit the location of the PWAD
- directory see Chapter 1.4)
-
- 4.2 Function Keys in the PWAD window are:
-
- Page Up, Page Down - that should be hard to work out :)
- Up Arrow, Down Arrow - to move PWAD selector
- Left Arrow, Right Arrow, Space, Enter - Tag/Untag PWAD for playing
- Ctrl-U - Untag all PWADs (Good idea before selecting a new PWAD)
- Ctrl-T - Tag All PWADs (Only if you have a series of PWADs all
- belonging to the one theme.
- Del - Delete a PWAD (WAD or ZIP extension) which is highlighted by the
- selector. Any tagged PWAD or ZIP will not be deleted.
-
-
- 5) PWAD ARCHIVAL STORAGE
- ------------------------
-
- 5.0 Another great feature of DooM Assistant is its ability to store your
- PWADS in compressed PKZIP format. PWAD files compress very well and
- thereby save you alot of hard drive disk space.
-
- 5.1 To take advantage of this feature all you need to do is to PKZIP those
- PWADS which get played together into a recognisable ZIP file. Mostly
- you will have a single PWAD in a ZIP but occasionally you may get a bunch
- of PWADs to do with a theme that are required to run together. For
- example one PWAD may change the level layout, another the monsters,
- another the wall, floor and ceiling textures and finally another the
- music and sounds. These 4 PWADS you would then archive into one ZIP file.
- DooM Assistant will find all these PWADs when you tag the single ZIP and
- add them all to DooM for you. Isn't that nice!! :)
-
-
- 6) TROUBLE SHOOTING
- -------------------
-
- 6.1.1 Communications problems during modem play -
- DooM SerSetup parameter overflow
-
- Some versions of SerSetup (v1.666 for example) pass parameters to
- DooM whilst others (v1.9 for example) use response files. If after
- tagging a number of PWADs you have connection problems then you will
- need to upgrade your DooM and SerSetup to the latest versions.
- These upgrades are available from the Internet: ftp.cdrom.com
-
-
- 6.1.2 Some/all PWADs not added -
- Insufficient disk space to uncompress PWADs
-
- Check that you have enough free Hard Drive space to uncompress all
- the tagged compressed PWADs.
