- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Introduction ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Welcome to
-
-
-
- Hi! I'm Thor!
-
- First of all, I'd like to welcome you to MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II!
-
- I'll be your guide through the help texts in all the games in this package. In
- this online reference I will introduce you to the games, and I will also tell
- you everything you need to know, in order to get the most out of them. So you
- and I are going to get to know each other very well!
-
- This game pack consists of eight games which all have different goals and skill
- requirements. Some of them require you to think a lot, while others allow you
- to completely disconnect your brain! Whatever you prefer, I'm sure they will
- give you many hours of fun!
-
- The games have been designed with ease of use as one of the primary goals. This
- has given all the games a generic look. They also use the same menus and
- notebooks, as far as possible. This means that once you've become familiar with
- one of the games, you actually know them all. Nice, isn't it?
-
-
- The games are also filled with context sensitive help texts (that's where I
- show up). You can bring up the help texts by clicking on a help button or
- pressing the F1 key, and I'll be there with some good advice for you.
-
- Before you begin playing the games, I strongly suggest that you read the Very
- important topics chapter. It describes the necessary settings you might have to
- make, in order to get the games to run as smooth as possible on your computer.
- I also think you should read the Adding new players and the How to use players
- sections in the Player management chapter, so you know how to handle players in
- the games. And, if you have the time, take a look at the About the games
- chapter too. The other chapters are not necessary to read just for playing the
- games, but if you want to know all the neat stuff that's in the games I suggest
- you take a look at them anyway, so that you won't miss any nice features!
-
- OK, I won't bore you with my nagging any more. Select one of the topics below
- to learn more:
-
- o Very important topics - Read this before you begin!
- o How to use this reference - Tells you how to find the right information.
- o About the games - Learn more about the games.
- o GP2 Toolkit - Learn more about the game utility.
- o Player management - Learn how to add new players and manage the ones you
- have.
- o General concepts - Gives you a description of the menus, dialog boxes etc.
- o Music and sounds - How to handle music and sound effects in the games.
- o Tips and tricks - A few neat tips and tricks. How to cheat, for example....
- o Technical information - If you want to dig deeper...
- o Troubleshooting - Read this if you're having problems with the games.
- o Questions and answers - Answers the most common questions.
-
- Oh, by the way, do you know what the sign I held said? Nah, I guessed that.
- Well, it said, in runes, MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II! Great, now you've
- learned a few more runes!
-
- And, do you know what my name, Thor, means?
-
- Double-click on me and I'll tell you more about myself!
-
- Note: In this reference we talk about something called the WPS. The WPS is the
- Workplace Shell, which is the object-oriented graphical user interface that is
- used in OS/2.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> About Thor! ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Oh, how nice of you to pop in!
-
- OK, I'll tell you a little bit about myself and my name. You know, when the
- guys at MicroLearn Nordic were to write this online reference and the help
- texts for these games, they wanted them to be both descriptive and at the same
- time easy to read. So they asked me if I wanted to do the presentation. And, of
- course, I said yes. I mean, I've always liked to be in focus... So here I am
- now, and I'll try to do my best to help you find the information you're looking
- for!
-
- My name, Thor, is a really traditional viking name. It was the name of an old
- Scandinavian god, and means "The Thunderer". In Scandinavian mythology, Thor
- was the god of thunder - a powerful man. Thor also means "The Strong One", and
- I think that's why I got the name... I'm really a true viking! Yes - I know
- that my ancestors have quite a reputation for being "wild". But nowadays, when
- you call someone a viking, you mean a strong healthy man, not afraid of a hard
- days work. And that's me for sure!!!
-
- No - let's not waste more time - let's get started!
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. How to use this reference ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- How to use this reference
-
- This chapter describes how you should use this online reference to find the
- information you are looking for.

- on the contents button at the bottom of this window. In the table of contents
- window you can choose the information you want to see, by double-clicking on
- the chapters.
-
- If you want to find a specific word you can click on the search button at the
- bottom of this window. There is also an index button for displaying the index
- for this reference.
-
- If you want to know a little bit about the games, read the About the games
- chapter, where I describe the games and some of their features.
-
- The Player management chapter describes how you add players to the games, and
- how you start a game with the players you want.
-
- If you want to learn more about the menus, dialog boxes etc., read the General
- concepts chapter.
-
- In the Music and Sounds chapter, I tell you how to handle music and sound
- effects in the games.
-
- If you think the games are too difficult, you should read the Tips and tricks
- chapter. There I will show you some cheats, and give you useful tips I think
- you will like.
-
- In the Technical information chapter I describe things like which files the
- games use, and some performance considerations etc.
-
- If you're having any troubles, you should read the Troubleshooting chapter.
- This will hopefully help you to solve any problems you have.
-
- And finally, the Questions and answers chapter answers the most frequently
- asked questions.
-
- OK, that's it!
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. About the games ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- About the games
-
- In this chapter I will tell you a little bit more about the games. I will also
- show you screen shots from all of them, and you will learn a few of the special
- settings some of them have. I will not tell you how to play them, however. If
- you want to know that, please select How to play from each games' help menu
- when you've started them.
-
- The MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II consists of eight games. You find them in
- the MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II folder. But, actually, this product
- contains nine applications! The ninth is the GP2 Toolkit, which let's you work
- with the maintenance of the games in a powerful, but easy way.
-
- OK, now double-click in the picture below to learn more about the applications!
-
- As I said in the introduction, the games have a generic look to make it easier
- for you. In the picture below you see the upper part of the screen, as it looks
- in all the games. Double-click on its different parts to get a description of
- them.
-
-
- OK, that's all for now. For even more information, read the help texts in each game.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.1. Blox ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Blox
-
- In this game, your job is to help me remove boxes in a stockroom, where I'm
- working for the moment. When you shove two identical boxes to stand
- side-by-side, they both explode and disappear. But don't ask me why! I have no
- idea, I'm just glad it works.... When all the boxes have disappeared from the
- stockroom, you have finished that level, and can go on to the next.
-
- You can double-click in the above screen shot of the game to get a description
- on parts of the screen. Try it!
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.2. Combo II ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
-
- Combo II
-
- A screen full of pipes! See if you can connect them correctly and manage to
- roll the balls into their homes. You can turn the pipes to steer the balls, and
- thereby make them go the way you want.
-
- Try to catch as many good bonuses as possible on your way, but look out for the
- bad bonuses! It can be really tricky to get all the balls into their homes,
- especially when you have many balls in the pipes!
-
- You can double-click in the above screen shot of the game to get a description
- on parts of the screen. Try it!
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.3. LongLegs ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- LongLegs
-
- Meet Mr. LongLeg and help him paint the boxes in the playing field purple. He
- does need your help, because a lot of things complicate his work - and so many
- bad guys try to sabotage everything he does!
-
- Hey, don't give up - you have some friends too!
-
- Double-click on the screen shot above to get some information on parts of the
- playing field.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.4. MirrorMan ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- MirrorMan
-
- Welcome to the confusing world of the Barkto twins! Portos and Aramis are lost,
- and you must help them to find their way home. Which would be easy if they were
- acting normal, but they are not! If you tell Portos to go to the right, Aramis
- will turn left, or up, or down...
-
- Don't panic - just double-click in the screen shot above and I will show you
- where to find the clue to the twins behavior, and a little more about the game.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.5. ML Memory ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
-
- ML Memory
-
- This is a computerized version of the well-known game of Concentration. It will
- definitely challenge your memory!
-
- The goal of the game is to remember where a number of cards are lying, and to
- match equal cards together into pairs. You can play against the computer or
- another human opponent.
-
- It sounds easy, doesn't it? Well, if you think it's too easy, you can always
- activate some of the options the program has to make it even harder for you...
-
- My favorite option is the randomized shuffling of the cards! The program then
- moves the cards around in the playing field once in a while, making your head
- spin. This makes it really hard to keep track of where the cards are lying. ML
- Memory also features a gambling mode option, if you feel like spending some
- money. You can make bets, win a lot of money if you do well, or just lose it
- all... However, remember that it's MLGP2 money you're spending, so don't worry!
-
- You can double-click in the above screen shot of the game to get a description
- on parts of the screen. Try it!
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.6. Morris ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Morris
-
- This is a real classic among board games. You shall first place your markers,
- as strategical as possible, and then, by moving them along the paths, defeat
- your opponent. You can try different board-types: Three, Six, Nine and Twelve
- Men's Morris. You can choose between playing against the computer or a human opponent.
-
- Double-click on the screen shot above for details on the playing field.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.7. Rockbot ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Rockbot
-
-
- If you like robots only half as much as I do, you will love this game!
-
- Rockbot, this very advanced toy robot, stands up to a big challenge - level
- after level to dig through, filled with danger, a big, complex maze, which will
- keep you busy for quite a while... Click on the screen shot above to learn more
- about the game contents.
-
- Yes, there is an end to your long trip, a green door which shows you the end to
- all the hard work. But to be able to open this, you need the green key! If you
- haven't found it yet, you'll just have to go back and search other parts of
- this big maze until you find it.
-
- And best of all: there's not only one solution to this game - but many!
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.8. Sauron's Eye ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
-
- Sauron's Eye
-
- In Sauron's Eye you shall remove a wall of bricks by bouncing a ball against
- it. When a brick in the wall is hit by the ball, it disappears. And when some
- bricks disappear they release droppers, that can be either good or bad for you.
- Try to catch the good ones, while keeping away from the bad ones, of course. As
- soon as the wall is gone, a new level is waiting for you....
-
- You can double-click in the above screen shot of the game to get a description
- on parts of the screen. Try it!
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. GP2 Toolkit ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- GP2 Toolkit
-
- This section describes GP2 Toolkit, a very useful utility in MicroLearn Game
- Pack, Volume II.
-
- Select one of the following topics to learn more about it:
-
- o What is GP2 Toolkit?
- o Creating folders
- o Graphics diagnostics
- o Erasing high score lists
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.1. What is GP2 Toolkit? ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- What is GP2 Toolkit?
-
- GP2 Toolkit is a utility that helps you with the maintenance of MicroLearn Game
- Pack, Volume II. Here you find functions like the handling of MLPlayer WPS
- objects, folder installations, graphics diagnostics, or resetting of the
- hiscores (a feature specifically for the poor losers...)
-
- By normal usage of the games you will probably not need to use GP2 Toolkit very
- often, but whenever you have the need for it, GP2 Toolkit is there to assist
- you! And, as always, I'm there to help you out when you're having any problems.
-
- Some of the functions in the GP2 Toolkit demand a certain technical knowledge
- from the user. It is, for example, a big help to have some basic knowledge on
- how to handle the WPS when you work with the player objects in GP2 Toolkit.
-
-
- Select one of the following related topics:
-
- o Creating folders
- o Graphics diagnostics
- o Erasing hiscores lists
- o Selecting sound devices
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.2. Creating folders ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Creating folders
-
- By using the GP2 Toolkit, you can create or re-create all folders that has been
- set up in the WPS during the installation of MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II.
- These are:
-
- o Main game folder - in this folder you find icons for all the games.
- o Players folder - here we keep all player objects - just drag and drop to
- the games for changing to a new player.
- o Levels folder - a folder used to store all game files for MicroLearn Game
- Pack, Volume II. This folder gives you the ability to quickly start a game
- with a specific game file.
-
- Here are a few general guidelines on folder installation in GP2 Toolkit:
-
- o Always install the Players folder and the Levels folder after the main game
- folder has been installed.
- o Normally you shall use the Keep existing replacement option. Please note
- that if you use the Replace option on a folder, all objects in the folder
- will be removed before the new one is created.
- o Read the log list carefully during the installation. If you find something
- odd in the list, do save it on a disc.
- o Don't change any of the default settings until you're really sure about
- what your change will cause.
-
- Please note that GP2 Toolkit only removes icon objects when replacing already
- existing folders and objects. If you need to erase a separate icon object,
- please use the regular WPS way. Refer to the system documentation for OS/2 for
- details on how to do this.
-
-
- Select one of the following related topics:

-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.3. Graphics diagnostics ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Graphics diagnostics
-
- The MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II is very graphics intensive, and therefore
- puts high demands on your drivers for your graphics card. Unfortunately, some
- drivers have certain defects, which prevent you from enjoying the high
- graphical quality of these games. To try to avoid graphical problems, please
- make sure that you use the latest version of the graphics drivers for your
- graphics card. Please consult the manufacturer of the graphics drivers if you
- have any questions on that, such as current driver version number.
-
- Due to this, we supply a test of graphics drivers. This feature will test two
- of the functions that we know some graphics drivers have problems with, and
- which are important in order to get MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II to work
- properly. You find these tests in Graphics test in the Utility menu.
-
- Please do the following to test your graphics driver:
-
- 1. Start the graphics test and wait until the dialog is shown.
- 2. Check that the bitmap in the upper right corner in Test 1 displays the same
- text as the text field just below the bitmap. [Technical note: If this test
- fails, your graphics driver is causing the GpiLoadBitmap API to function incorrectly.]
- 3. Check that all of the bitmaps in Test 2 display the same color combinations
- as described below the bitmaps. [Technical note: If this test fails, your
- graphics driver is causing the GpiQueryBitmapBits and/or GpiSetBitmapBits
- APIs to function incorrectly.]
-
- If you find any unexpected results in any of the graphics tests, please report
- to the graphics driver manufacturer and ask for an updated graphics driver.

-
- Erasing high score lists
-
- In GP2 Toolkit there's a nice (!?!) feature, erasing high score lists. This
- can, for example, come in handy if you find the present hiscores too high and
- unbeatable. I must say, I find it a bit like cheating, but I suppose it must be
- up to you... Anyhow - here we give you the possibility to remove them!
-
- The games using high score lists are Combo II, LongLegs, MirrorMan, Rockbot and
- Sauron's Eye.
-
- If you get second thoughts when performing the erase, I will give you an extra
- chance by asking you a safety question. One thing is for sure - a true viking
- would never use this feature!!!

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Player management ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Player management
-
- This chapter describes how you add, delete and in other ways manage players in
- the games.
-
- In MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II you don't add players to a specific game.
- Instead you create players that you can use in any of the games. When you
- create players you can customize them to give them different personalities.
- Each player is stored in a player object, which is a regular WPS object.
-
- Select one of the following topics to learn more:

-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1. How to create a player ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- How to create a player
-
- This section guides you through the complete step-by-step process of making
- your own personal player. If you just want a brief description on this topic,
- you should read Adding new players.
-
-
- Step 1 - Creating the object
- Create a new object by dragging a new object from the template to the Players
- folder. For more information on how to do this, please read The player template
- object. The OS/2 tutorial describes drag-and-drop operations further. The
- template for the player object looks like this:
-
-
- Step 2 - Opening the settings
- To be able to change the properties for the player, you have to open the
- Settings notebook for your player. Do this by clicking at the player icon with
- the right mouse button and selecting Settings from the context menu. Note that
- a shortcut is also available for this action: Double-click with the left mouse button.
-
-
- Step 3 - Changing the object title
- Once the Settings notebook is opened you can change the object's title. Object
- title is the name you want the object to carry when it is displayed in the WPS.
- Please note that object title is not the same as the name for a player, but
- normally it's best to have it similar to the player's first name or callsign.
-
- To change the objects title, move to the General page and make the changes in
- the Title field.
-
- This can, of course, also be done directly on your desktop, like with all other
- objects in WPS: by clicking on the object when the button is pressed. Please
- refer to your OS/2 reference if you need more information on how to do this.
-
-
- Step 4 - Changing the names
- To change the name of the player, select Name page. Enter the names you want to
- use, in all fields. You should not leave a field empty, so if you for example
- have no callsign you can duplicate either the first or last name.
-
-
- Step 5 - Changing the face bitmap
- To change a player's face image, move to the Face page in the Settings notebook
- for your player. At this page you have the possibility to import a picture of
- yourself, either from a file or from the OS/2 clipboard. You can create the
- picture by either scanning a picture of yourself, or if you have the artistic
- skills - draw your self-portrait!
-
- To get the face bitmap to look as good as possible, please follow these recommendations:
-
- o If you need to modify your face image, do this in some separate bitmap
- editor. The function for bitmap editing in the player object is only for
- stretching and cutting images.
- o When importing the bitmap, please make sure that the bitmap is exactly 80
- pixels wide and 100 pixels high. By doing this, the face bitmap won't have
- to be modified at import time.
- o If you have a bitmap with many colors, please make sure that the bitmap is
- converted to the system palette in OS/2. Most of the better graphical
- editors for OS/2 can handle this kind of operation. This is most important
- if your are running on a 256 colors system.
- o Make sure that your bitmap is dithered as little as possible. This will
- make your face bitmap look better in smaller (shrinked) sizes in the games.
- o Don't put a border around your face bitmap.
- o Select, if possible, a relatively discrete background for the face bitmap,
- for example different shades of gray.
-
-
- Step 6 - Changing the object icon
- Finally you need to give the object an icon which visually represents the object.
-
- Do the following to give the icon the symbol you select. In this example
- ICONEDIT will be used, which is included in OS/2 and is used by default for
- editing icons, but you can of course use any icon editor available for OS/2. If
- you need more information on ICONEDIT, please refer to the on-line
- documentation for OS/2.
-
- 1. Select the General page in the notebook.
-
- 2. Push the Edit... button. ICONEDIT will be started.
-
- 3. Select the graphics device used by your system. If you, for example, use
- 1024x768 pixels with 256 colors, select 8514.
-
- 4. Start the graphics editor for OS/2 that you normally use for modifying bitmaps.
-
- 5. Open your face bitmap in the graphics editor.
-
- 6. Shrink the face bitmap to the size used for icons. If you use 1024x768 or
- larger resolution, 40x40 is the appropriate icon size. If you use lower
- resolution, 32x32 is the icon size. Mini-icons use half the size. In case
- your graphics editor has special filters preventing picture distortion when
- shrinking/stretching, you should use these.
-
- 7. If possible, make sure that the colors of the shrinked/stretched bitmap is
- converted to the OS/2 system palette.
-
- 8. Copy the bitmap to OS/2's clipboard.
-
- 9. Bring up ICONEDIT again and select Paste from the Edit menu.
-
- 10. If you want to fill the background with "transparent" color you should add
- a white border around the actual face image.
-
- 11. Repeat the procedure from 3. for all different graphics devices you might
- need to use. If you will distribute the object to other systems, all
- included graphics devices need to be supported.
-
- 12. Select Save from the File menu in ICONEDIT.
-
- 13. Exit ICONEDIT. The object icon is now visually changed.
-
-
- Step 7 - Close the settings
- To confirm all settings, just close the notebook and your newly created player
- is ready for use.

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.2. Adding new players ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Adding new players
-
- This section briefly describes how to add new players to the games. If you want
- more detailed information about how to create a new player, you should refer to
- How to create a player.
-
- This is the player template object.
-
- To create a new player, start a drag operation from the player template object
- and drop it where you want the new player, preferably in the Players folder.
- Once the object is dropped, a new player is created. To learn more about how to
- use drag-and-drop techniques, please refer to the OS/2 tutorial.
-
- When you've created a new player, you should customize it to distinguish it
- from the other players.
-
- Please do the following:
-
- 1. Open the new player's settings, by clicking with the right mouse button on
- the player's icon and select Settings from the pop-up menu.
- 2. On the first page, enter the player's names and callsign (a signature or
- short form of the name).
- 3. On the second page, import (load or paste) the face you want to use as your
- player's face. For example, you can use a scanner to scan a picture of
- yourself, and then use that picture as the player's face!
- 4. Change the object icon on the third page, to make it look like the player.
- 5. Close the notebook to confirm the changes you have made.
-
- When you have done this, you can use this player in the games.
-
- See the Modifying existing players section for more information on the player's
- settings. Also, please refer to How to create a player for a more detailed
- step-by-step guide on how to create a player.

-
- Removing players
-
- This section describes how you remove player objects from the games.
-
- To remove an existing player from the games, you drag his/her icon and drop it
- on the shredder. The player is then removed.
-
- But do observe that the object is permanently removed, you cannot undo this
- operation. So please be careful that you don't remove any players you might
- want to use again!

- On the first page of the player's settings notebook, you enter the name of the
- player. You can also enter a callsign or a short form of the name.
-
- You can give a player a truly visual identity by importing (loading or pasting)
- a bitmap on the second notebook page. You have my pretty face and Karin's
- pleasant smile as default, but why not get a scanned picture of yourself - or
- draw your self-portrait in a bitmap editor - and import it as a bitmap. Your
- face will then be displayed when it's your turn!
-
- When you have done all the modifications you want, close the player's settings
- notebook to confirm the changes. If you don't want to keep the changes you've
- made, click on the Undo button at the bottom of the notebook page.

- This is the player template object.
-
- This object is a regular OS/2 template, and is used in the same way as all
- templates are - you just use drag-and-drop.
-
- As all templates, when dropped it creates a new object of the type it
- describes. Since this object type is a player object, it creates new players
- for the MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II games.

-
- Customizing the player status fields
-
- This section describes how to customize the player status fields within a game.
-
- If you don't know what these fields are, take a look at the bottom of the About
- the games section, where I describe them for you.
-
- There are two ways you can customize the information in these fields. Firstly,
- by pointing at one of the players' information fields and clicking the right
- mouse button to bring up its pop-up menu, or, secondly, by selecting the last
- page in the Interface notebook (found in the Settings menu).
-
- Please note that the customization affects both players' status fields in the
- game. If you, for example, click with the right mouse button to bring up the
- pop-up menu for Player 1's status field and make some changes, the same changes
- will be done to Player 2's status field. So, the fields always display the same
- type of information.
-
- Here is a description of the information you can choose between:
-
-
- Size
- This is the size of the player status fields. You can choose between small,
- medium and large. The first time a game is started, the default sizes are the following:

- Face
- You can choose to show the player status field with or without the player's
- face image. One reason to hide it would be if its ugly! Nah, just kidding, but
- if the game you're playing is horizontally very small, and you still want to
- use large player status fields, you might have to hide the face images to make
- room for the large sizes.
-
-
- Minimize while not playing
- This feature shrinks the non-active player status field to a very small size.
- This feature, however, is only available in games where you can have two players.
-
-
- Name preference
- Here you can select which part of the player's name you want to see in the

- This section handles advanced topics related to the player management. Some
- parts of this section requires knowledge in OS/2 programming and/or REXX.
-
-
- Moving a player
-
- To use your own player objects on more than one computer, or simply for doing
- backups, you need to know how to move player objects.
- To move the player to a floppy disc, just drag the player object to the
- diskette icon.
- To move the player from the floppy disc to the desktop, bring up the contents
- of the diskette and drag the object from the diskette to the desktop. Please
- note that the MLPlayer object class must be registered on the target computer
- to get the object correctly created on the desktop. The above operation can
- also be applied to the Copy operation (by holding down the key during the drag operation).
-
-
-
- Deleting the MLPlayer object file
-
- The class MLPlayer is found in the file MLPLAYER.DLL. Since this file is
- registered in the WPS, and is being used by the player objects, it is locked
- and can normally not be erased. If you want to delete MicroLearn Game Pack,
- Volume II and need to delete this file, do the following:
-
- 1. Delete all player objects in your system.
-
- 2. Open the template folder and delete the MLPlayer template object. This is
- done by clicking with the right mouse button to open the Context menu, and
- then selecting Delete. Don't use drag!
-
- 3. Start GP2 Toolkit and select Players->Deregister MLPlayer Class from the
- Utility menu. This step is optional but should be done for system
- performance reasons.
-
- 4. Delete the MLPLAYER.DLL file.
-
-
-
- Special MLPlayer setup strings
-
- The following extra strings are available for the MLPlayer class. These can,
- for example, be used in REXX with the SysCreateObject command or the
- WinCreateObject API to create your own MLPlayer objects. For more information
- on SysCreateObject, please refer to your REXX documentation. For more
- information on WinCreateObject, please refer to the OS/2 API reference. The
- MLPlayer class is inherited from the WPFileSystem class.

-
- General game concepts
-
- The games in MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II behave basically in the same way
- in many situations.
-
- The most important similarities are listed below:
-
- o A start button is always located in the upper left corner of the main
- window. The start button is used to start a new game. If a game is already
- running, a safety question will be displayed - asking you if you are sure
- you want to abort the current game. The start buttons have different
- designs in different games, inspired by the game itself - but you always
- know where to find it!
-
- o All games contain three pull-down menus; the Game, Settings and Help menus.
- The Help menu looks exactly the same in all games. The Settings menu looks
- the same in all games, except for Blox. The Game menu differ widely between
- the different games.
-
- o All games have a pause feature. When a game is paused, all game action is
- suspended and a pause bitmap is displayed. To resume a paused game, just
- click at the game area where the pause bitmap is displayed.
-
- o Every game in MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II has its own local (pop-up)
- menu. To bring up this menu, just click with the right mouse button in the
- game area. The only exception is Combo II. In Combo II you have to click
- outside the game area to bring up the local menu.
-
- o All settings that will cause a game to restart are found in Game settings.
- These settings are, for example, difficulty level and number of players.
- All games, except for Blox, have a Game settings notebook.
-
- o Settings concerning a game, but that won't cause the game to restart, are
- found in Look-and-feel settings. Here you find, among others, background
- color, background bitmaps, and you can also decide which animations you
- want to see.
-
- o All applications have a minimize button at the upper right corner of the
- main window. In minimized state, the games are suspended and will start
- again when the window is restored.

-
- Using the menus
-
- This section describes the different menus and some of their items.
-
- All menus behave in general like a common OS/2 menu - except for the hints
- given to the items. When browsing through a menu, you are given a hint (a short
- explanation) to what the menu item does. You can select if you prefer this hint
- to be displayed in the title bar or at the bottom of the main window. You can
- also choose to turn this feature off. Please read Interface settings for more information.

-
- The Game menu
-
- In the Game menu you perform actions and get information that is related to the
- actual game.
-
- These actions include such things as starting, saving, loading and pausing the game.
-
- Most game action selections require that a game is currently running. For
- example, pause can, of course, only be used when a game is running.
-
- The information menu items include viewing the Statistics or the Hall of Fame
- notebook dialog.
-
- All games have the menu items approximately in the same order. For example, the
- New menu item is always located at the top of the Game menu.

-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6.2.2. The Settings menu ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- The Settings menu
-
- The Settings menu is a simple menu - it always consists of 4 menu items -
- except in Blox, where it consists of only 3 menu items. These menu items are
- the same for all games in MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II.
-
- All items in the Settings menu bring up different notebook dialogs, where you
- can customize the game in the way you want. The menu items are divided into two
- different groups. The first two menu items display game-dependant notebook
- dialogs. The last two menu items display the same notebook dialogs in all games.
-
- The first two Settings menu items are:
-
- o Game... - Handles all settings concerning the game playing, mostly
- difficulty settings. When you change a setting in this notebook, a new game
- has to be started before the setting can have effect.
- o Look-and-feel... - Handles how the game should behave. Settings that affect
- the look and behavior of the game are located in this notebook dialog. Any
- setting changed in this notebook dialog will have effect immediately, no
- need to start a new game.
-
- The last two Settings menu items are:
-
- o Interface... - Handles general interface settings that are not directly
- related to the actual game.
- o Sound... - Handles different music and sound settings, such as volume and
- sound effect mapping.

-
- The Help menu, of course, gives you help and answers your questions. The
- different menu items in the Help menu offer help to users with different needs
- and skills. The Help menu has the same look in all games, namely:
-
- o Help index - An index with particularly interesting subjects in the game.
- Use this if you're looking for something specific, but don't know exactly
- where to find it.
- o How to play - A description of the game and its rules. Read this to learn
- how to play the game, but also to get explanations on, for example, how the
- scores are calculated.
- o Tips & Tricks - Even if you think you know the game - read this! Here you
- will find many useful tips that can help you a lot.
- o Menu commands - This function lists and gives a short explanation to all
- menu items in the present game. You will get a clear picture of all items,
- and have the ability to learn more about them through cross-references.
- o Keys help - A description on how to run the game with the keyboard. All
- keys that are needed for playing the game are listed, but also some
- keyboard shortcuts for the menu items you use often.
- o Help using help - Select this if using the help in OS/2 is new to you. This
- will guide you through the help system and teach you how to use it.

-
- Using the dialog boxes
-
- This section describes the dialog boxes, and how to use them.
-
- In MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II you do practically all game settings in a
- notebook control inside a dialog box. If you need more specific information on
- how to use notebooks, please read Using the notebooks.
-
- Push buttons
-
- All dialog boxes in MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II is handled with push
- buttons. You can see here below what they can look like:
-
- You have a few different push button designs to choose among. Select the one
- you prefer in Interface settings.
-
- Every time you put the mouse pointer over a push button, the mouse pointer will
- look like a hand for you to push the button with!
-
- Otherwise these push buttons behave like the ones you are familiar with in OS/2.
-
- If you will need more information on the different buttons in a dialog box when
- being inside it, just push F1 in the actual dialog box, and select Help on
- buttons at the end of the help text that is shown.
-
- Mouse pointer placement
-
- A feature that I like very much - I think it's so practical - is that in
- MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II you have the possibility to automatically have
- the mouse pointer placed on the OK/Yes button. Since I like it so much, you get
- this by default! But if you don't like it, you can turn it off in the Interface
- settings.
-
- Message boxes
-
- A special type of dialog box that is used in many different places in
- MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II is the message box. This is a kind of very
- small dialog box, used for short, simple questions, or when I need you to
- confirm something.
-
- You will see an image of me, putting a question, or (and this is the part of
- the job I hate the most!) giving you an error message. I carry a symbol, for
- example a question mark, to show you what kind of message I want to give you.
- Like this:
-
- I have some information for you!
-
- I have a question that you must answer!
-
- Bad news... something is wrong!!!
-
- Here is a warning notice for you... Watch out!
-
- Closing a dialog
-
- If you close a dialog box by selecting Close in the systems menu (or
- double-click on the system menu icon) this is the same as pressing Cancel/No
- (depending on the type of dialog box) in a dialog box.

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6.4. Using the notebooks ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Using the notebooks
-
- Notebook dialogs are a special kind of dialog box. Inside a dialog box you find
- a notebook and a number of push buttons to the right of the notebook. In all of
- the notebooks in MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II you find the tabs on the
- bottom of the notebook page.
-
- You can select to have the notebook tabs with a graphical symbol or with text
- only. As default they show a graphical symbol, but if you want to change this
- to display text only, you do this in Interface settings.
-
- The best way to navigate inside the notebook is to use a mouse. Just click with
- the mouse button on the tab of the page you want to view - just like all other
- OS/2 notebooks. To confirm the settings you've made, push (OK) to confirm ALL
- the settings in ALL pages of the notebook. If you press (Cancel) (after having
- changed some settings in the notebook) I will ask you a safety question - if
- you really want to exit the notebook without confirming/saving. You could tell
- me not to ask this safety question (go to Interface settings), but I would
- strongly recommend you to keep that question! I know, from own experiences,
- it's easy to forget settings you've made when you browse through many notebook
- pages...trust me!
-
- When opening a notebook dialog that you have opened before, the page you viewed
- when you closed it the last time, will be shown.
-
- On some notebook pages in MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II you will see small
- animations that visualizes what you will see if you confirm your selections.

-
- All settings are made in a notebook. This Interface notebook appears in all

- affect the current game, they are not global.
-

- Statistics
-
- In all games in MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II, except for Blox, you can get
- statistics over the games. The statistics report consists of a notebook with
- three notebook pages.
-
- The two first pages handles player 1 and player 2, respectively. There, the
- accomplishments of each player in the last game is shown, for example for how
- long the player has been playing. If the last/present game is played with only
- one player, the second notebook page is disabled.
-
- The last notebook page handles general statistics concerning the game. There
- you can find information about, for example, how many games have been played
- since MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II was started.
-
- The statistics are called either Current - if a game is currently played, or
- Final - if it's over. If you open the Statistics notebook when a game is
- running in the background, the statistics information will be constantly updated.
-
- It's also possible to print all statistics. For more information, please refer
- to Printing.

-
- High scores
-
- My ancestors used to raise big stones where they carved in their great
- achievements. My employers say it would be too much fuss to do it this way
- every time you beat a record, so we have high score lists instead!
-
- The following games have high score lists: Combo II, LongLegs, MirrorMan,
- Rockbot and Sauron's Eye.
-
- There is a separate high score list for each of the five specified difficulty
- levels (Very easy, Easy, Medium, Hard, Very hard), and the three top scores
- will be listed. The User defined difficulty level has no high score list. Each
- level file has its own set of high score lists.
-
- If you get a score among the three best, the high score list will appear and
- you get to enter your name. If you get exactly the same score as another player
- already on the list, you will push that player down.
-
- You can at any time open and check the present high score list. Just open the
- Hall of fame notebook (in the Game menu). The notebook page with the high score
- list for the current difficulty level will be shown by default. In the Hall of
- fame notebook you also get the possibility to print the high score lists (it's
- not as great as a runestone, but I guess I must admit, it's more practical...).

- Hardcopy printouts in MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II are available in two
- different locations; the Statistics notebook and the Hall of fame notebook. You
- select printouts by pressing the button on the right side of the notebook. The
- printout will not follow immediately - first a dialog with these different
- selections will appear:
-
- o Current notebook page - print the current notebook page only.
- o All notebook pages - print all the pages in the notebook.
- o Print on same page - print all the pages in the notebook onto one single
- sheet of paper. This selection is, of course, only possible when printing
- all the pages.
- o Printer - select which print queue to use. You also have the possibility to
- make settings for the selected print queue, by pressing the button.
-
- By selecting Print in the option dialog, you start the printing. If there is no

-
- Music and Sounds
-
- MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II offers both Music ( songs to listen to) and
- Sounds ( sound effects) to give an extra dimension to the game playing. But
- since different computers offers different possibilities to playing music, and
- different people have different tastes in music and sound, you should really
- read the following topics to learn how to give both yourself and your computer
- the best possible setup!

- o Background music
- o Selecting sound devices
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7.1. Using Music and Sounds ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Using Music and Sounds
-
- This section describes how music and sound effects are handled in MicroLearn
- Game Pack, Volume II.
-
- The MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II uses audio in two different ways - as
- background music and as sound effects. Background music is the 27 songs you can
- listen to while playing the games. Sound effects, on the other hand, contains
- the different sounds we use to illustrate things that happen in the games, for
- example explosions.
-
- MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II supports different types of sound sources for
- playing music and sounds. To choose which sound source to use, please refer to
- Selecting sound devices.
-
- In MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II you have the possibility to select which
- songs to listen to while playing a certain game, and if you want them to be
- played in listed or random order. When one tune is over, the next will follow
- automatically. Note that the background music will end when the game is over. I
- have picked out some songs for each game, which you have as default. It's songs
- which I think is in style with the certain game, but if you don't like it -
- just change it, I won't be offended (well - I'll try to hide it anyhow...).
-
- In MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II you can use sound events. A sound event is,
- simply put, an event in a game to which you can connect a sound effect. An
- event can, for example, be the placing of a marker - and a sound effect to
- match this sound event could for example be a short click sound. You also have
- the ability to select the special sound effect <No sound> to any sound event.
- Since I'm a very helpful viking, I have made default choices for all sound
- events in all games, but you can change them all - just go to the Sound
- notebook, and I'll teach you all about it. I can assure you that you can get a
- really crazy feeling with a few unexpected sound effects...
- Please note that you can always select to shut all sound effects off, by
- pressing . You can also shut the background music off, by pressing .
-
- With some types of sound devices you can change the volume and the balance.
- This can be done on the last page of the Sound notebook (Volume settings). If a
- sound device doesn't support this, the slider control is disabled (for example,
- the PC speaker controls neither volume nor balance).

- Sound settings
-
- This section gives you useful knowledge regarding sound settings.
-
- The settings made in the Sound notebook is saved separately for each game. They
- are also saved separately for each sound device used in an application. This
- lets you swap between different sound devices but still keep the settings made
- for specific devices.
-
- Please note that there are also some shortcut keys that gives you the ability
- to do certain settings without opening the Sound notebook. These are for Sound
- On/Off and for Music On/Off.
-
- For further information on the different sound and music settings, push the
- (Help) button on the notebook page in the Sound notebook you want to learn more about.

-
- Special MLGP2 background songs
-
- All these songs are specially written for MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II!
-
- Atlantis [CD Audio, MIDI]
- The longest tune of them all - more than five minutes. A funny theme
- in the higher octaves.
-
- Bombadill [CD Audio, MIDI]
- A piano tune, perfect for a stroll in the Barkto world... But this
- tune will not at all reveal that they (you?) are having troubles -
- is just a cute melody to hum when you feel good!
-
- Digital [CD Audio, MIDI]
- Some old favorites that have turned digital - how many do you
- recognize? And they've got a really heavy rhythm too - yeah, groovy!
-
- Freja's Song [CD Audio, MIDI]
- The beautiful Freja has got herself a really soft song here! A slow
- paced, mellow melody.
-
- Hugin's Song [CD Audio, MIDI]
- A song moving along in medium tempo, with many different keyboard sounds.
-
- Kiruna by Night [MIDI]
- In case you didn't know - Kiruna is really far north, above the
- Polar circle. I suppose that if they had this energetical song to
- dance to, they could stay warm all night long.
-
- Life on Jupiter [CD Audio, MIDI]
- The intro takes us right into space - but the friendly tunes help us
- to stay real... An up-tempo song with a heavy beat. I had no idea
- that they had parties on Jupiter!
-
- Lost in space [CD Audio, MIDI]
- Both the swing and the soft - a song in motion with a melodic soft
- middle section.
-
- Lullaby [MIDI]
- This song is not recommended when playing action games - it's such a
- peaceful lullaby - promise to stay awake!
-
- Picnic [CD Audio, MIDI]
- Let's go for a picnic, and bring this happy melody with us! I do
- like the happy motion of this one, light and easy.
-
- Rain Forest [MIDI]
- The introduction is really long - you can hear big raindrops
- falling, but nevertheless the song itself is both full of energy and fun.
-
- Saturn [CD Audio, MIDI]
- The motion goes on and on - it's a long way to Saturn... A song with
- marimba accompaniment!
-
- Stuck in Traffic [CD Audio, MIDI]
- A funky tune with a hard working bass and great piano solos.
-
- T.E.D. [MIDI]
- No, you're not in a church, it's just a deceptive intro - soon the
- action gets going!
-
- The Story of Balder [MIDI]
- This story begins a bit sad, it's a pretty slow tune, but it soon
- gets happier. I think Balder would have liked it!
-
- The Vacuum Cleaner [CD Audio, MIDI]
- A medium paced song with an end section where the bass just goes crazy!
-
- Timeless Travel [CD Audio, MIDI]
- A cute, friendly little song! It goes from theme to theme like a
- travel through a constantly varying landscape.
-
- Walking down the Street [CD Audio, MIDI]
- This is a marching tune for sure! If "Bombadill" wasn't enough to
- get the twins home, try this one!
-
- You broke my Watch [CD Audio, MIDI]
- This one always makes me dance! A full four minutes with piano
- melodies, drum solos and more...
-
-
- Don't forget to read about the Classical background songs as well!

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7.3.2. Classic background songs ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Classic Background Songs
-
- The world of classical music contains innumerable hits! Here are some of my favorites:
-
- Eine Kleine Nachtmusik [MIDI]
- This beautiful serenade was written by W. A. Mozart, and should be
- played by a string orchestra. This is the first out of four
- movements, a rapid and happy piece of music.
-
- Fugue in d minor [MIDI]
- J. S. Bach worked as organ-player most of his life, and wrote a lot
- of music for the organ, like this piece. A solemn work filled with
- roulades and mighty chords. But did you know that he had two wives
- during his life time, had 21 children and loved beer?!!
-
- Golliwog's Cake-walk [CD Audio, MIDI]
- This is part of a collection of musical nursery rhymes by the French
- composer Claude Debussy. A piano solo piece filled with small jokes
- - listen and hear the toys march around to this music!
-
- Gymnopedie [MIDI]
- The French composer Erik Satie wrote this piece at the age of 22 in
- 1888. Very calm music, meditative and beautiful.
-
- Hungarian Dance #5 [MIDI]
- Johannes Brahms was a true romantic composer. He wrote this piece
- inspired by Hungarian traditional music and gypsy songs. It's a
- vigorous, captivating dance!
-
- Swedish Rhapsody [CD Audio, MIDI]
- Hugo Alfven made a potpourri out of Swedish folk songs, arranging
- them and putting them together to the Swedish Rhapsody. And here WE
- did an arrangement on the final song, a genuine Swedish 'polska'.
- It's a dance - no way that you could misunderstand that - I just
- love it!!!
-
- The Minute Waltz [CD Audio, MIDI]
- The polish composer Frederic Chopin was an infant prodigy who became
- a world famous piano virtuoso. He travelled and moved around a lot,
- and when he died in 1849 in his flat in Paris, he was buried in
- Paris, but his heart was brought back to his native country, to a
- church in Warsaw! This piece is a really quick waltz with a swirling
- tune, going round and round...

- The Entertainer [CD Audio, MIDI]
- Scott Joplin, who wrote this piece, was a true entertainer himself!
- He was called the "King of Ragtime Composers", and this is one of
- his most famous pieces. Listen to this swinging rag, and make a trip
- back to St. Louis early this century.

-
- Selecting sound devices
-
- In MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II you can select to use different kinds of
- sound devices for the sound effects and the background music. Which devices you
- can select from depends on the hardware installed in your computer, and also
- which sound drivers you have installed. All computers have, at the least, the
- possibility to play sound effects from the PC speaker, and this requires no
- extra driver.
-
- The following possibilities for playing sound effects are supplied by
- MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II:
-
- o PC Speaker - nothing extra is needed.
- o WAVE - MMPM/2 has to be installed, and you also need a sound card that can
- handle WAVE audio data via MMPM/2 (which most sound cards can).
-
- The following possibilities for playing background music comes with MicroLearn
- Game Pack, Volume II:
-
- o CD Audio - MMPM/2 has to be installed, and a CD player must be available
- with the CD containing MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II inserted - before a
- game is started.
- o MIDI - MMPM/2 has to be installed for a sound card that can play MMPM/2's
- "Sequencer device". Please note that sound cards without their own hardware
- timer - for example Sound Blaster and Sound Blaster Pro - can not play MIDI
- files at the same time as WAVE (this is not the case with the Sound Blaster 16).
-
- The selections regarding which sound devices to use affect all the games.
-
- Do the following to select the sound devices you want to use:
-
- 1. Quit all MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II games.
- 2. Start GP2 Toolkit.
- 3. Select Sound/Music... from the Utility menu.
- 4. Select the sound device you want to use. If you don't want to use any sound
- effects or music at all, select <None> for the device(s) you will not use,
- since this will give better performance at game start up.
- 5. Press the OK button to confirm and save your selections.
- 6. End GP2 Toolkit.

-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8.1. General Tips ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- General tips
-
- Here are some general tips that may be of help when you play the games in
- MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II:
-
- o For easy access to the most used functions within the games, you can use
- the game's local menu. To view the local menu, just click with the right
- mouse button (click with the context button) inside the game area. In Combo
- II, you have to click outside the game area to bring up the context menu.
-
- o MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II doesn't have any special 'Boss key', but
- you can use the key combination to get the same effect. This will minimize
- the game's main window immediately, and suspends the game until the main
- window is restored again.
-
- o Read the Tips & Tricks online help section for all games! You may find this
- very useful for mastering a game.
-
- o In all games with a timer field, you can click on the timer field to
- quickly pause a game.
-
- o Another way to quickly pause a game is to use the shortcut keys .
-
- o To quickly start a new game, use the shortcut keys .
-
- o When a game is starting and you see the startup bitmap for the game, you
- can perform other tasks on your system, since the games' startup sequences
- are multithreaded.
-
- o To see the credit list (a list with the people who've created MicroLearn
- Game Pack, Volume II), bring up the About box and click on the logo bitmap
- while holding both the and the keys down.
-
- o The best visual result will be achieved when running the games in 256 or
- more colors with a resolution of 1024x768 or higher.
-
- o The best graphics performance will most likely be achieved when running the
- games in 256 colors on a resolution below 1024x768.
-

- today, I'll tell you that the cheats are usually activated by typing ML and the
- first or last name of more or less known people in the computer industry.
- Oooops, did I say too much now?

-
- Very important topics
-
- YES - this is REALLY IMPORTANT!!! Cause you want the games to work well, don't you?
- Read this and learn what to do!
-
- o If the Palette Manager is activated, the graphics in the games might be
- distorted. The graphics output will also be slower when the Palette Manager
- is active. The Palette Manager is used if you are either:
-
- 1. running a Windows program that uses the palette in seamless mode.
- 2. running an OS/2 program that uses the Palette Manager (usually graphics
- programs).
- 3. having the Workplace Shell palette aware option activated.
-
- If any of these are true, please exit the programs you think are using the
- Palette Manager and also turn off the Workplace Shell palette aware option.
-
- Note that the Palette Manager is only used in 256-color mode, however.
-
- o If you read this online reference, as well as the on-line help texts in the
- games, in less than 256-color mode, the colors will probably be somewhat
- distorted too. You will be able to read everything, but the nice pictures
- I'm going to show you might not look so good. So if you have a graphics
- card that supports 256 colors or more, please run OS/2 in that mode. You
- want me to look my best, don't you?????
-

-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9.2. Performance considerations ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Performance considerations
-
- If you use a low-performance system this section is very important! If you've
- got a truly powerful system, I still think you should read it, to get some tips
- on how to get as much power as possible from the games!
-
- o Do not use the palette manager when running the games. This will give
- graphics performance slow-downs as well as color distortion. Please read
- more about this in Very important topics.
-
- o If you are using a low-end machine you should only run one game at a time.
- The games will otherwise use valuable memory from your system.
-
- o Make sure that the THREADS= statement in CONFIG.SYS is specified to at
- least 80, since each game can sometimes use up to 30 threads.
-
- o If you are using a low-end system, make sure that you've got plenty of swap space.
-
- o 256-color mode is almost always faster than graphic modes with more colors
- (like 64K and 16.8M colors). If you feel that some games are too slow in
- terms of graphics output, use a 256 color mode instead.
-
- o 640x480 and 800x600 runs faster than 1024x768 since the low resolutions use
- a smaller bitmap size. If you have problems with graphic speed, use a lower resolution.
-
- I also suggest that you read the Very important topics section for more information.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9.3. System requirements ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-

-
- o Mouse
-
- o 10 MB of hard disk space
-
- This is optional but highly recommended:
-
- o OS/2 Warp
-
- o MMPM/2 (requires about 2 to 4 MB of additional RAM)
-
- o MMPM/2-compatible sound card
-
- o CD-ROM player capable of playing CD Audio
-
- o Accelerated video card with fast graphics drivers
-
- o 256 or more colors (very highly recommended)

- This section lists all the identifiers that are used in the WPS by MicroLearn
- Game Pack, Volume II. This section is probably only of interest to you if you
- are familiar with the technical features of OS/2, for example if you are a
- system administrator. Good technical knowledge is required for full
- appreciation of this section.
-
- MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II registers a number of objects in the WPS at
- installation time. These objects are connected to their own object ID, which
- must be unique in the system. Since every object is unique, there can of course
- only exist one copy of each object at the same time in the system. For example,
- if the objects are installed a second time in the system (for example into a
- different folder), the first set of objects will be erased, or the second
- object installation will fail - depending on the installation method being used.
-
- Here follows a list of all IDs for all objects that are installed in the WPS by
- MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II. These IDs are considered reserved in any
- system with MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II installed.

- possible. As a temporary solution, you can also try to limit the number of
- sound events that will be played in the game, by assigning some sound events to
- <None>. Also, there is a Safety Mode for sound effects in the sound notebook
- that can be used, but this will create less exciting sound output. Read Using
- Music and Sound to learn more.
-
-
- Problem: When I'm playing a game using CD Audio as background music, I notice
- small interrupts in the game about once every second.
- Explanation: The CD has to be read from every second to check the current state
- of the CD drive. On slow CD drives, this will be noticeable in the faster games.
- Solution: Turn off the music for the troublesome game if the problem bothers
- you too much.
-
-
- Problem: I'm running the music with the MMPM/2 MIDI and I'm using a PAS 16 or
- similar sound card. Some background songs seem not to play correctly, the music
- is often interrupted by long delays.
- Explanation: There is a bug in the driver for this sound card.
- Solution: No fix is currently available. Don't use the MIDI songs that are
- causing trouble, or run CD Audio as music source instead.
-
-
- Problem: I'm using MMPM/2 for sound effects and MMPM/2 MIDI for background
- music. However, I cannot get both to work at the same time.
- Explanation: Some sound cards don't have drivers that can play MIDI at the same
- time as sound effects.
- Solution: Use CD Audio for background music or PC speaker for sound effects.
- Read Selecting sound devices for more information.
-
-
- Other problems
-
- Problem: I get a message box saying that the default game file for the game
- can't be loaded. The application will not start after that message.
- Explanation: It seems like the default game file is either missing or corrupt.
- Solution: Reinstall the specific game.

-
- Questions and answers
-
- In this section I will answer the most frequently asked questions regarding
- MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II:
-
- Q: How do I change the names of the players in the games?
- A: Players are handled by WPS objects that are dragged into the games. Please
- refer to Player management for more information.
-
- Q: Do I need a very fast computer or graphics card to run the games?
- A: Most of the games will run comfortably on a 386DX or better processor. Some
- of the games will gain by using an accelerated graphics card.
-
- Q: Is it possible to order some of the games separately?
- A: No. The games are sold as one package only.
-
- Q: Will this game pack be released on any other software platforms?
- A: No. This is an OS/2-only product.
-
- Q: Some games take a while to load/start. Why?
- A: A lot of the graphics are prepared before a game is ready to be played. This
- is done to limit the amount of disk space needed, and to make the actual game
- playing as fast as possible. Please note that the startup sequences of the
- games are multithreaded, which means you can work with other applications while
- a game is loading.
-
- Q: Do I need to have MMPM/2 installed to run MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II?
- A: No, MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II runs fine without MMPM/2 installed.
- However, the music and sound abilities will be somewhat limited if MMPM/2 is
- not installed.
-
- Q: Does MicroLearn Game Pack, Volume II make any changes to the system files
- (CONFIG.SYS, OS2.INI and/or OS2SYS.INI)?
- A: No, these files are not modified at all.
-
-
