- ATTENTION PATRIOT OWNERS
-
-
- PATRIOT is a new generation of game, and an ambitious simulation of a
- complex reality. As such it is different from conventional wargames and
- requires a whole new approach for mastery. You will find that PATRIOT
- echoes some of the less recognized aspects of modern warfare. Just as
- the successful Commander does most of his job long before the first shot
- is ever fired, so too must the PATRIOT commander devote some time before
- the action starts to learning the conventions and controls of the game.
-
- The Quick Start guide enclosed will walk you through the essential game
- controlls and the first scenario. This introduction will take about
- thirty minutes of your time, a very brief period indeed when you realize
- that it takes thirty years to make a General Officer. By completing the
- Quick Start and walkthru you will discover that the plans and
- contingency plans of a battle staff are just as germaine to PATRIOT as
- they are to a General Staff. It is far easier to change plans, paths,
- and formations before "the band begins to play" than it is once the
- dance has begun.
-
- Our development and testing processes have suggested numerous areas of
- future expansion, and we have recieved many great suggestions for
- enhancements from our testers. Three-Sixty Pacific is responding to
- these suggestions and will incorporate many of them into a new version
- of PATRIOT. Three-Sixty has not delayed the release of this product to
- incorporate these changes. As such this upgrade will be provided to
- registered owners of PATRIOT at no charge when it becomes available.
-
- PATRIOT System Requirements:
-
- CPU 80386SX or higher.
- Memory 4 MB (minimum)
- Free Conventional Memory 610,000 Bytes (595 KB)
- Free EMS Memory 2,900,00 Bytes (2.76 MB)
- HANDLES =128
- Hard Disk Space 5.17 MB
-
-
- Video Requirements
-
- Card SVGA with 512 KiloBytes VRAM, VESA mode 0x101
- (640 x 480 pixels in 256 Colors) Support (requires a VESA software
- driver on most systems).
-
- Monitor Capable of Displaying 640 x 480 x 256 Colors.
-
- NOTE: This program is processor intensive; it will run quickly on high
- end 486 machines with a large cache, and more slowly on 386SXs. Game
- speed is also dependent upon the size of the loaded Scenario, as the
- larger scenarios will be tracking in excess of 3,000 discrete units.
-
- IBM XGA-2 Video Card Users:
- XGA-2 does not tolerate programs which (though VESA compliant)
- write directly to the hardware instead of utilizing BIOS calls. Three-
- Sixty Pacific, Inc. and IBM are working to produce a means of
- identifying the XGA-2 Card and re-routing all direct hardware calls to
- the BIOS.
-
- Video Seven video card Users:
- "It was noted that during our testing of PATRIOT, that older
- models of the Video Seven brand video cards experienced difficulty in
- displaying VESA supported graphics modes. This could be due to older
- BIOS version of the card and/or Video Seven╞s VESA driver. Video Seven
- encourages owners of these older version cards and software to contact
- Video Seven Product Support departments at (510) 656-7800, between 8:00
- AM to 5:00 PM Pacific Standard Time."
-
-
- DR-DOS Users:
- "During the testing of PATRIOT, DR-DOS 6.0 Users noted an
- incompatibility with the DR-DOS memory management driver EMM386.SYS.
- The manufacturers of DR-DOS are endeavoring to produce an updated
- version of this driver that will work properly with PATRIOT. Contact
- DR-DOS Technical Support at 1-800-NETWARE (1-800-638-9273) for further
- information."
-
-
- Installation:
-
- PATRIOTs Installation routine will examine the first available
- hard drive to ensure adequate space is available for installation, and
- will return to you a message concerning the available Disk Space,
- Conventional RAM, and Extended/Expanded RAM, as well as a list of the
- hard drives present. If you choose to install PATRIOT on a drive other
- than "C:" the Install program will not check the destination disk for
- adequate available space. You must check in advance that you have the
- 5,417,235 Bytes (5.17 MB) required to install PATRIOT.
- The user must either approve the default installation on drive
- "C:" or select a drive for the installation routine to continue.
-
- VESA Driver:
- The PATRIOT installation routine will check for a loaded (as in
- currently running) VESA driver. If it does not find a VESA driver
- loaded, it will offer you the option of testing your hardware and
- installing a VESA driver appropriate to the installed video card. The
- installation routine will then inform you what card it thinks you have,
- and will tell you the name of the driver it has copied to your PATRIOT
- directory. You will need to select the appropriate VESA driver and load
- it prior to running PATRIOT. (a VESA driver is invoked by typing its
- file name or including it as an item in a BAT file.)
-
- MS-WINDOWS Users:
- If your system came to you (from the manufacturer or seller) with
- Windows 3.0 or 3.1 pre-loaded, there is an excellent chance that there
- is no mouse driver loaded under DOS. The installation routine will not
- run as a DOS Window, and will not run without a mouse driver. The
- easiest solution is to FORMAT a bootable diskette. The command FORMAT
- A: /S will format a System (bootable) disk. You will then need to
- create a CONFIG.SYS file and an AUTOEXEC.BAT file by executing the
- EDIT.COM program under DOS and typing the following text (which appears
- in "quotation" marks to avoid confusion with explanatory notes) exactly
- as listed, and naming them (under SAVE AS) as listed:
-
- CONFIG.SYS
- "DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS"
- "DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.SYS 2900 H=128 RAM"
- "DEVICEHIGH=C:\DOS\MOUSE.SYS"
- "DOS=HIGH,UMB"
- "FILES=20"
- "BUFFERS=20"
-
- This example assumes that your operating system files are in the
- directory [C:\DOS.] If they are in a different directory, you will need
- to substitute the complete path to the appropriate directory in place of
- [C:\DOS].
-
-
- AUTOEXEC.BAT
- "CD \PATRIOT"
- "[VESADRVR.COM]"
- "PATRIOT"
-
- Where [VESADRVR.COM] is the VESA driver that the PATRIOT installation
- routine has installed, or the VESA driver you have been using. You must
- also insert the complete path (if different from the current directory)
- where the file is located before the file can be invoked.
-
- NOTE: If you do not already have a mouse driver installed on your
- system, you will have to install one. Most pointing devices come with a
- disk that includes mouse drivers of both the MOUSE.COM and MOUSE.SYS
- varieties. Only a driver ending with a .SYS tag may be loaded in the
- CONFIG.SYS file (as shown above), drivers ending in .COM or .EXE must be
- loaded in manualy or in a BATCH (*.BAT) file such as the AUTOEXEC.BAT or
- PATRIOT.BAT batch files.
