- WELCOME TO DINOSAUR ADVENTURE!
-
- Thank you for purchasing Dinosaur Adventure. We hope to
- send you off on the greatest adventure of all . . .
-
- This "README" file has some additional information and
- late-breaking news that could not make it into the User's Guide
- as well as some important pieces of technical information that
- bear repeating here (because we know you "techies" never read
- manuals, but you always read the README file!).
-
- NEW FEATURES. Dinosaur Adventure starts with five exciting
- options to choose from. Just click on any of them to get started.
- They are:
- -- Dinosaur history, an informative description of the dinosaurs.
- It closely follows the pattern of other Knowledge Adventure titles.
- -- A story-book that reads to you, highlights and pronounces
- words and describes pictures on the pages. Just click on various
- objects in the story-book to see how it works.
- -- Two special games, Name-A-Saurus and Read-A-Saurus. In each of
- these games, try to answer the question by clicking on the
- appropriate answer. To get a new question, just click on either of
- the arrow buttons at the bottom of the screen.
- -- A Dinosaur Theater. Want to watch a Tyrannosaurus and Stegosaurus
- battling? Just click on that icon (or any of the others) in the
- Dinosaur Theater.
- When you want to try something else, click on the Dinosaur
- Adventure logo to return to the main screen. Click on the stop sign
- to end your Dinosaur Adventure session.
-
- MEMORY REQUIREMENTS. Dinosaur Adventure requires approximately
- 520KB of RAM in order to run. Even when there is adequate total
- RAM to run the program, there may be conflicts with other programs
- occupying memory. If you experience difficulty in running Dinosaur
- Adventure under these circumstances, please remove other memory
- resident programs from memory.
-
- LAPTOP/NOTEBOOK COMPUTER DISPLAYS. Dinosaur Adventure
- requires a color VGA monitor to display its high-resolution
- images. It will not work on the internal plasma or LCD monitors
- on laptop PCs. Most laptops, however, have a connector for an
- external monitor, and Dinosaur Adventure will work fine with your
- laptop hooked to an external VGA monitor. Dinosaur Adventure will
- run fine on certain laptop screens, such as the Toshiba 4400SXC,
- COMPAQ LTE's and the PC BRAND NB 486slx that have 256 shades of
- grey or color screens. The only problem will be that the right
- edge of the screen will be slightly cut off. This is due to the
- fact that Dinosaur Adventure runs in the extra high resolution VGA
- video mode of 360 x 480 pixels with 256 colors and most of the
- internal laptop screens can only show 320 pixels in width.
-
- EGA DISPLAYS. Dinosaur Adventure requires a VGA color monitor
- will and therefore will not run on EGA monitors.
-
- NETWORKS. To run Dinosaur Adventure on a Local Area Network, the
- Network Supervisor can install the Dinosaur Adventure program into any
- subdirectory on the file server's hard disk. After installing on the
- server, personalized configuration files must be created on each node's
- hard disk. The following six files should be copied from the Dinosaur
- Adventure directory on the server into a \DINO subdirectory on each
- node's hard disk:
-
- KA.CNF
- MOUSTEST.EXE
- MOUSE.COM
- MUSIC.DRV
- SOUND.DRV
- DINO.BAT
-
-
- See "About Program Defaults" in Appendix B of your manual for information
- about the contents of the configuration file, KA.CNF. MOUSTEST.EXE and
- MOUSE.COM can be copied to each node from the file server's hard disk.
- MUSIC.DRV and SOUND.DRV can also be copied from the file server's hard
- disk assuming that the sound and music devices are the same on the file
- server as they are on the node. If they differ you will need to run
- SETUP.EXE, from the server, to generate the appropriate sound and music
- driver files and to properly configure KA.CNF. After running SETUP, copy
- MUSIC.DRV, SOUND.DRV and KA.CNF to the node. Lastly, lines 4 and 8 of
- the ASCII file, DINO.BAT must be edited on each node. Assuming that the
- file server's hard disk driver letter is DRIVE L and Dinosaur Adventure
- has been installed to the directory \GAMES\DINO on that drive, DINO.BAT
- should read as follows:
-
- @ECHO OFF
- MOUSTEST
- IF ERRORLEVEL 1 GOTO NOMOUSE
- edit -> L:\GAMES\DINO\KAV.EXE C:\DINO
- GOTO END
- :NOMOUSE
- MOUSE > NUL
- edit -> L:\GAMES\DINO\KAV.EXE C:\DINO
- MOUSE /U >NUL
- :END
-
-
- Note that the batch file runs the KAV.EXE executable file from the file
- server and instructs Dinosaur Adventure to look to the local peronal
- directory of C:\DINO for the personal sound and music driver files. Also
- KA.HST -- the Dinosaur Adventure personal History file -- is stored in
- this same directory.
-
-
-
- MOUSE SUPPORT. Dinosaur Adventure takes great advantage of
- your mouse if you have one, but it does not require one. There are
- keyboard equivalents spelled out in the User's Guide that will
- allow you to enjoy Dinosaur Adventure without a mouse.
-
- SOUND. Even if you do not have a supplemental sound card or
- other specialized output device for sound, Dinosaur Adventure
- will reproduce its sounds through your computer's speaker on all
- but the oldest machines. In general, if you have an IBM AT-class
- (286) machine or its equivalent, you should be able to hear some
- sounds through the PC speaker. These sounds will not be as loud
- or as clear as from an add-on sound device, but in many cases they
- will still be quite acceptable.
-
- If some sounds do not play back when the sound button
- indicates sound is available, it may be because you do not have
- enough RAM memory for those sounds to load and play. Try unloading
- TSRs or device drivers in your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS to free
- sufficient memory to play those sounds.
-
- NOTE: SOUND WILL NOT PLAY SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH MOVIES IF YOU
- HAVE YOUR SYSTEM CONFIGURED TO PLAY SOUND THROUGH THE
- PC SPEAKER. YOU MUST HAVE A DIGITIZED SOUND CARD OR A
- 386 or 486 COMPUTER IN ORDER TO UTILIZE THIS CAPABLITY.
- OTHERWISE SOUND WILL PLAY BEFORE THE MOVIE PLAYS.
-
- YOU CAN GET SYNCHRONIZED SOUND FROM A PC SPEAKER ON
- 386'S OR 486'S BY TYPING THIS COMMAND FROM THE
- C:\DINO DOS PROMPT:
-
- COPY DRIVERS\IBMBAK.DRV SOUND.DRV [ENTER]
-
-
- WORDS IN THE STORYBOOK WILL NOT BE HIGHLIGHTED WHILE
- BEING READ IF INSTALLED FOR PC SPEAKER OR ADLIB.
-
-
- RUNNING DINOSAUR ADVENTURE IN WINDOWS ENHANCED MODE. If you run
- Dinosaur Adventure in a DOS session under Windows, only high-end sound
- devices will work. If Dinosaur Adventure is installed for PC Speaker,
- Windows has a hardware conflict when accessing the PC's timer, causing
- Dinosaur Adventure to not run at all. To correct this problem, you must
- either 1) Run Windows in Standard Mode (type WIN/S at your DOS prompt)
- -OR- 2) Re-install Dinosaur Adventure for NO SOUND. To do so, type
- SETUP from your Dinosaur directory DOS prompt and choose U) NO SOUND.
-
-
- IF YOU HAVE AN 8086, 8088 OR 80286 BASED MACHINE and Dinosaur Adventure
- freezes after the splash screen appears, you should use the command
- line parameter "-ts". To do so, at a DOS prompt in your Dinosaur
- directory, type:
-
- KAV -TS
- to start Dinosaur Adventure.
-
-
- PROBLEMS LOADING. When attempting to run Dinosaur Adventure, if
- you get the error message "Can't Continue: Program Directories or
- Files Not Found", you may have had only a partial installation. Try
- running the alternative Install program, INSTALL.BAT (see page 26 of
- your manual for complete instructions).
