  16.  ■ For your convenience a gear indicator has been added within the 
  17.    Rev Counter, this is only shown if the head up display option is on.

  19.  ■ Gear change light. This is used to indicate when you should change gear,
  20.    it has four modes:
  21.             Green       Change down, RPM very low.
  22.             Dull        Normal state.
  23.             Red         Change up, Approaching the red line.
  24.             Flash RED   Over-revving!

  26.  ■ Only ANALOGUE joysticks are supported by Rally.
  27.  
  28.  ■ When it is raining or snowing you may use F12 to toggle to weather
  29.    effect on the windscreen.

  31.  ■ It is possible to change the release time of the opponent cars by typing

  35.    Where 25 is the number of seconds between cars being released,
  36.    this is in the range of 5 to 120 seconds, The number is not actually
  37.    necessary and if omitted, Rally will use it's default of 30 seconds.

  40.    save the game regularly this will not be a problem!

  53.  ■ Sound will not be available without Expanded memory (EMS).

  56.  ■ As documented in the manual, Rally supports ADLIB, SOUND-BLASTER,
  57.    and SOUND SOURCE.  In addition it does support Media Vision's PAS 16.
  58.  
  59.  ■ All of the sound types play 4 channels of sound, however this requires
  60.    a considerable overhead for your PC's processor. It is therefore
  61.    possible to select which channels you prefer, to ensure that Rally
  62.    always performs as smoothly as possible with your system. The controls
  63.    are documented below.

  76.            Both the music and in game sounds are in stereo, so for 
  77.            best results do not use mono headphones or speakers as
  78.            only two of the channels will be heard.

  83.            If you are having problems hearing sound through your
  84.            Pro Audio 16 sound board you may have to turn up the
  85.            volume through Windows or change your Config.sys file.

  87.            For Windows users that have loaded their Pro Audio
  88.            software in Windows you simply can click on to the 
  89.            Pro Audio group and choose Pro Mixer. While in 
  90.            Pro Mixer you can turn your volume up by sliding the
  91.            volume contol under Master up.

  93.            If you are not using Windows, you will need to add this
  94.            line into your Config.sys file:

  110.  ■ RALLY REQUIRES AT LEAST 580Kb FREE MEMORY AT THE DOS PROMPT.

  112.    If you have DOS 5.00 or above you can check your available memory
  113.    using the DOS command "mem", see your operating system documentation
  114.    for further details of this command.

  116.  ■ If available, Rally will take advantage of UMB's.
  117.  
  118.  ■ Sound will not be available without Expanded memory (EMS).

  120.  ■ The ability to roll your car is not available without EMS.

  147.  * To create a clean floppy boot disk please follow these steps:

  150.         1)  Insert a blank floppy disk into your A: drive.
  151.         NOTE: This disk must be in your A: drive, it will not work
  152.         in the B: drive.

  154.         2)  At your C:\ prompt type the command: FORMAT A:/S and hit the
  155.         ENTER key. Then follow the on screen prompts until you get 
  156.         back to the C:\ prompt.
  157.            
  158.         3)  At this point you will go to the A: drive and type the 
  159.         command: COPY CON CONFIG.SYS and hit the ENTER key. 
  160.  
  161.         4)  Then type these lines: (Hit the ENTER key after each line)
  162.                     DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
  163.                     DEVICE=C:\EMM386.EXE RAM
  164.                     DOS=HIGH,UMB
  165.            
  166.         5)  At this point hold down the CTRL key and hit Z, then press
  167.         the ENTER key. You should get the message 1 FILE COPIED.

  169.         6)  You will now need to make an AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
  170.  
  171.         7)  At the A: prompt type: COPY CON AUTOEXEC.BAT and hit the
  172.         ENTER key.

  174.         8)  Then type these lines: (Hit the ENTER key after each line)
  175.                        PROMPT $P$G
  176.                        DEVICE=C:\MOUSE\MOUSE.COM

  178.         9)  Please keep this diskette in drive A: for the following step.

  180.         10) Now reboot your computer by hitting RESET or holding down
  181.         the CTRL, ALT and DEL keys at the same time.

  183.         11) Go to the Directory where RALLY is installed and type RALLY.

  187.    FOR DOS 6.0 or 6.2 USERS

  189.    To boot your system clean using DOS 6.0 or 6.2 follow these steps:
  190.  
  191.         1)  Reboot your computer either by pressing the reset button
  192.         or by holding down the CRTL, ALT and DEL keys at the
  193.         same time.
  194.  
  195.         2)  When you see the message, STARTING MS-DOS, hit the F8 key.
  196.  
  197.         3)  You will be prompted to confirm each CONFIG.SYS line.
  198.  
  199.         4)  Say yes to only the following:
  200.                           DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
  201.                           DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM
  202.                           DOS=HIGH,UMB
  203.  
  204.         5)  Say no to the rest of the command lines. 
  205.           
  206.         6)  Change to your Mouse directory. This can be done by typing
  207.         CD\MOUSE and pressing ENTER.

  209.         7)  Then type MOUSE and press ENTER.

  211.         * NOTE: Some mouse drivers may be found in your Windows, DOS, 
  212.           or other directories.

  219.  ■ Considerable degradation of game performance will be apparent
  220.    if Rally is run with your PC's TURBO switched off (i.e. low speed).
  221.    This degradation will be even more pronounced if you are running
  222.    the game with one of the sound options on.

  229.  ■ Many of the game options are stored in a configuration file, you
  230.    may, however wish to revert to the default configuration. This is
  231.    possible by simple deleting the RALLY.CFG file.

  236.     Textured ground  ON
  237.     Beeper sound     ON

  244.  ■ Disk cacheing programs.
  245.    Whilst it is allright to use Rally with READ disk caches (Those
  246.    that cache all disk reads), it is inadvisable to use WRITE BEHIND
  247.    disk caching as the disk cache may not get an opportunity to write
  248.    out it's data until Rally is finished. This only really affects the
  249.    disk operations.

  251.    SMARTDRV.EXE users.
  252.    To find out what sort of disk cacheing you have type:

  254.              SMARTDRV /S
  255.  
  256.    This will give information about the current status of smartdrv.

  290.   ■ If you experience anything odd try deleting RALLY.CFG to restore the
  291.     default configuration.

  293.   ■ If the introduction animation does not play correctly this may be due
  294.     to a either selecting SOUND SOURCE or ADLIB without the relevant
  295.     hardware.

  297.   ■ If the mouse pointer does not move in the menus, this is due to either
  298.     SOUND SOURCE or ADLIB having been selected without the relevant
  299.     hardware. Keyboard operation will still work so it is possible to
  300.     deselect these.
