- │Additional information║
- ╘══════════════════════╝
-
- ■ For your convenience a gear indicator has been added within the
- Rev Counter, this is only shown if the head up display option is on.
-
- ■ Gear change light. This is used to indicate when you should change gear,
- it has four modes:
- Green Change down, RPM very low.
- Dull Normal state.
- Red Change up, Approaching the red line.
- Flash RED Over-revving!
-
- ■ Only ANALOGUE joysticks are supported by Rally.
-
- ■ When it is raining or snowing you may use F12 to toggle to weather
- effect on the windscreen.
-
- ■ It is possible to change the release time of the opponent cars by typing
-
- RAL 25
-
- Where 25 is the number of seconds between cars being released,
- this is in the range of 5 to 120 seconds, The number is not actually
- necessary and if omitted, Rally will use it's default of 30 seconds.
-
- ■ It is not actually possible to go directly to a stage, however if you
- save the game regularly this will not be a problem!
-
- ■ To disable the menu and intro. music type either:
-
- RAL M or RALLY M
-
- on the command line, this will not affect sound whilst driving!
-

- │Sound Support║
- ╘═════════════╝
-
- ■ Sound will not be available without Expanded memory (EMS).
- See below for further details.
-
- ■ As documented in the manual, Rally supports ADLIB, SOUND-BLASTER,
- and SOUND SOURCE. In addition it does support Media Vision's PAS 16.
-
- ■ All of the sound types play 4 channels of sound, however this requires
- a considerable overhead for your PC's processor. It is therefore
- possible to select which channels you prefer, to ensure that Rally
- always performs as smoothly as possible with your system. The controls
- are documented below.
-
- CTRL + F1 Toggle Channel 1 Engine
- CTRL + F2 Toggle Channel 2 Turbo
- CTRL + F3 Toggle Channel 3 Speech+Sound effects
- CTRL + F4 Toggle Channel 4 More Sound effects
-
- This configuration will be saved when you quit Rally.
- The music on the main menu is not affected by your choice of channels.
-
-
- * Sound Blaster PRO users:
- _____________________________
- Both the music and in game sounds are in stereo, so for
- best results do not use mono headphones or speakers as
- only two of the channels will be heard.
-
-
- * Pro Audio Spectrum 16 Users:
- _____________________________
- If you are having problems hearing sound through your
- Pro Audio 16 sound board you may have to turn up the
- volume through Windows or change your Config.sys file.
-
- For Windows users that have loaded their Pro Audio
- software in Windows you simply can click on to the
- Pro Audio group and choose Pro Mixer. While in
- Pro Mixer you can turn your volume up by sliding the
- volume contol under Master up.
-
- If you are not using Windows, you will need to add this
- line into your Config.sys file:
-
-
- DEVICE=c:\proaudio\mvsound.sys d:3 q:5 j:0 v:100 s:1,220,1,7 m:0 j:0
-
-
- NOTE: If other applications envoke louder noises than normal,
- you can change the default setting to v:80 or go into Pro Mixer in
- Windows and turn down the volume.

- │Memory considerations║
- ╘═════════════════════╝
-
- ■ RALLY REQUIRES AT LEAST 580Kb FREE MEMORY AT THE DOS PROMPT.
-
- If you have DOS 5.00 or above you can check your available memory
- using the DOS command "mem", see your operating system documentation
- for further details of this command.
-
- ■ If available, Rally will take advantage of UMB's.
-
- ■ Sound will not be available without Expanded memory (EMS).
-
- ■ The ability to roll your car is not available without EMS.
-
- ■ Here are some sample configurations for Rally to use.
- These will give you UMB's and EMS.
-
- EMM386 Memory manager
-
- in CONFIG.SYS
-
- DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
- DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM
- DOS=HIGH,UMB
-
- QEMM386 Memory manager
-
- in CONFIG.SYS
-
- DEVICE=C:\QEMM\QEMM386.SYS RAM
- DOS=HIGH
-
- in AUTOEXEC.BAT
-
- C:\QEMM\LOADHI /LINK
-
-
- FOR DOS 5.0 USERS
- ----------------------
- * To create a clean floppy boot disk please follow these steps:

-
- 1) Insert a blank floppy disk into your A: drive.
- NOTE: This disk must be in your A: drive, it will not work
- in the B: drive.
-
- 2) At your C:\ prompt type the command: FORMAT A:/S and hit the
- ENTER key. Then follow the on screen prompts until you get
- back to the C:\ prompt.
-
- 3) At this point you will go to the A: drive and type the
- command: COPY CON CONFIG.SYS and hit the ENTER key.
-
- 4) Then type these lines: (Hit the ENTER key after each line)
- DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
- DEVICE=C:\EMM386.EXE RAM
- DOS=HIGH,UMB
-
- 5) At this point hold down the CTRL key and hit Z, then press
- the ENTER key. You should get the message 1 FILE COPIED.
-
- 6) You will now need to make an AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

- ENTER key.
-
- 8) Then type these lines: (Hit the ENTER key after each line)
- PROMPT $P$G
- DEVICE=C:\MOUSE\MOUSE.COM
-
- 9) Please keep this diskette in drive A: for the following step.

- │Game performance║
- ╘════════════════╝
-
- ■ Considerable degradation of game performance will be apparent
- if Rally is run with your PC's TURBO switched off (i.e. low speed).
- This degradation will be even more pronounced if you are running
- the game with one of the sound options on.
-
-
- ┌──────────────────────────╖
- │Default game configuration║
- ╘══════════════════════════╝
-
- ■ Many of the game options are stored in a configuration file, you
- may, however wish to revert to the default configuration. This is
- possible by simple deleting the RALLY.CFG file.
-
- ■ Default configuration is:
- All game options ON
- Textured road ON
- Textured ground ON
- Beeper sound ON
-
-
- ┌──────────────────╖
- │Potential pitfalls║
- ╘══════════════════╝
-
- ■ Disk cacheing programs.
- Whilst it is allright to use Rally with READ disk caches (Those
- that cache all disk reads), it is inadvisable to use WRITE BEHIND
- disk caching as the disk cache may not get an opportunity to write
- out it's data until Rally is finished. This only really affects the
- disk operations.
-
- SMARTDRV.EXE users.
- To find out what sort of disk cacheing you have type:
-
- SMARTDRV /S
-
- This will give information about the current status of smartdrv.
-
- ┌───────────────────────────────────────────────┐
- │ │
- │ Disk Caching Status │
- │ drive read cache write cache buffering │
- │ -------------------------------------------- │
- │ A: yes no no │
- │ B: yes no no │
- │ C: yes yes no │
- │ │
- └───────────────────────────────────────────────┘
-
- If your status looks a bit like the one above, then type:
-
- SMARTDRV C
-
- This will disable the write behind cacheing but enable the read cacheing.
- Your status would then look like this:
-
- ┌───────────────────────────────────────────────┐
- │ │
- │ Disk Caching Status │
- │ drive read cache write cache buffering │
- │ -------------------------------------------- │
- │ A: yes no no │
- │ B: yes no no │
- │ C: yes no no │
- │ │
- └───────────────────────────────────────────────┘
-
-
- For further information consult your operating system documentation.
-
- ■ If you experience anything odd try deleting RALLY.CFG to restore the
- default configuration.
-
- ■ If the introduction animation does not play correctly this may be due
- to a either selecting SOUND SOURCE or ADLIB without the relevant
- hardware.
-
- ■ If the mouse pointer does not move in the menus, this is due to either
- SOUND SOURCE or ADLIB having been selected without the relevant
- hardware. Keyboard operation will still work so it is possible to
- deselect these.
