  31. Windows 95 Installation with 8 megabytes of memory.

  33.      If you only have 8 megabytes in your machine, you may need to make
  34.      some modifications to allow C&C to run on the desktop. Below is a
  35.      step-by-step instruction manual for beginners to make the necessary
  36.      changes...

  38.        1. Go to the START/SETTINGS/TASKBAR menu.
  39.  
  40.        2. Click the START MENU PROGRAMS tab, then click the
  41.           ADVANCED button.
  42.  
  43.        3. You will see an Explorer window.  Click on the plus sign
  44.           to the left of the PROGRAMS folder. Notice that you get
  45.           a list of sub-folders.
  46.  
  47.        4. Click on the WESTWOOD folder.  On the left you will see a
  48.           list of programs.
  49.  
  50.        5. Right click on the C&C icon. Chose PROPERTIES from the menu.
  51.  
  52.        6. Click on the MEMORY tab.
  53.  
  54.        7. Look for the section that says EXPANDED (EMS) MEMORY.   It
  55.           should have Auto in the window. Click the arrow next to the
  56.           Auto and scroll down until you see NONE.  Click this.
  57.  
  58.        8. Look for the section that says MSDOS PROTECTED MODE (DPMI)
  59.           MEMORY.  It should have Auto in the window.  Click the arrow
  60.           next to the Auto and scroll down until you see 16384. Click
  61.           this.

  63.        9. Hit OK, then click the X in the upper right corner of the
  64.           Explorer window, then click OK on the Taskbar Properties
  65.           window.

  71. Improving Windows 95 video playback.
  72.  
  73.      The performance of C&C in a Windows 95 DOS box is slightly slower than
  74.      in a real DOS environment. You can improve movie playback performance
  75.      by following these step-by-step instructions.
  76.  
  77.        1. Go to the START/SETTINGS/TASKBAR menu.
  78.  
  79.        2. Double-click on the SYSTEM icon.
  80.  
  81.        3. Click the PERFORMANCE tab, then click the FILE SYSTEM
  82.           button.
  83.  
  84.        4. Click the CD-ROM tab.
  85.  
  86.        5. You will see a slider labeled SUPPLEMENTAL CACHE SIZE.  Move
  87.           the slider all the way to the right.  Remember however that
  88.           increasing your cache size reduces the memory available to
  89.           the rest of the system while in Windows.<\LI>

  91.        6. Next, look for a window labeled OPTIMIZE ACCESS PATTERN
  92.           FOR: In the window, choose the one that best describes your
  93.           CD drive (single, double, triple, quad and higher speed
  94.           drive.)

  96.        7. Click the APPLY button. You will get a window asking you to
  97.           restart your machine. Do so.
  98.  
  99.        8. Once you have restarted, run the game normally. This should
  100.           also increase the performance of any other CD title you have.

  104. Modem codes for Windows Command & Conquer.
  105.  
  106.      As detailed in the manual, we seem to get best modem performance with
  107.      modem data-compression and error-correction turned off. You can do
  108.      this by going to the serial game settings dialog and entering the
  109.      appropriate init. string for your modem. This should be entered on the
  110.      host (dialing) machine, the guest (receiver) should use ATZ. If you
  111.      use these init. strings the modem speed may have to be set to the
  112.      exact speed of your modem, for example 14,400 bps or 28800 bps. Here
  113.      are example init. strings for some popular modems:

  132. Modem support under Windows 95.
  133.  
  134.      If you find that you have trouble connecting during modem play, or get
  135.      sync errors when you connect, there are a few things you can do to
  136.      solve this problem:
  137.  
  138.        1. Check to see that the port setting in Windows 95 is correct for
  139.           your modem. Windows defaults to 9600 baud. You will want to
  140.           change the default baud rate to 57600. To do this:
  141.  
  142.             1. Click on
  143.                START/SETTINGS/CONTROL PANEL.
  144.             2. Double click the SYSTEM icon, click the DEVICE MANAGER
  145.                tab.
  146.             3. Click the plus sign next to the PORTS listing.  Double-
  147.                click on the right COMM port for your modem.
  148.             4. Click the PORT SETTINGS tab. The window at the top
  149.                (BITS PER SECOND) is the baud rate for the port. Set
  150.                this for 57600 baud.
  151.             5. Click OK twice to close both windows. You may have to
  152.                restart Windows.
  153.  
  154.        2. Make sure the error correction and compression on your modem is
  155.           turned OFF. Check the README file that came with Command and
  156.           Conquer or this document for a list of Modem initialization
  157.           strings that will accomplish this (copy the initialization string
  158.           for your modem in the README file to the init string box in the
  159.           modem setup screen.) If your modem is not listed in the README,
  160.           you will need to check your modem manual or call the manufacturer
  161.           for your modem to see how to do this.

  163.        3. If you simply cannot get Command and Conquer to connect correctly
  164.           in Windows 95, reboot to DOS mode and re-run the game. Be sure
  165.           that your sound card and CD-ROM drivers are loading in DOS.

  169. Divide Overflow error when installing.
  170.  
  171.      This error is a result of an incompatible or older mouse driver which
  172.      is installed in your system. You have two ways to fix this:
  173.  
  174.        1. You may unload your mouse driver, and complete the installation.
  175.           After C&C is installed, reload your mouse driver normally and run
  176.           the game. Only the install program is incompatible with older
  177.           mouse drivers.
  178.  
  179.        2. You can download the newest mouse driver from the manufacturer.
  180.           Because there are hundreds of mouse manufacturers, you cannot
  181.           download the drivers from Westwood Studios. The manual or driver
  182.           software you have should point you to a place where you can order
  183.           or download the newest drivers.

  187. Strange or shifted screen colors appear when playing.
  188.  
  189.      A few video cards (like the Diamond Viper) require a little extra
  190.      support in Command & Conquer. To add this support, download the
  191.      Command & Conquer patch and install it according to instructions
  192.      contained within the self extracting file.

  196. Unable to set modem speed to 14,400 or 28,800.
  197.  
  198.      Modems from US ROBOTICS require just a little bit of special support
  199.      for Command & Conquer. In version 1.07 of Command & Conquer, it is not
  200.      possible to set your modem speed to 14,400 or 28,800 if you have a US
  201.      ROBOTICS modem. We suggest that you either set your modem speed to
  202.      19,200 or download the Command & Conquer 1.19 patch file.

  206. Missing cutscenes or briefings.
  207.  
  208.      There is a bug in the game that prevents cutscenes from being played
  209.      after the CD is changed. This is easy to fix by simply starting the
  210.      game with the correct CD in the CD-ROM drive. So, if you are playing
  211.      the NOD missions, start the game with the 2nd CD-ROM. If you are
  212.      playing GDI, start with the 1st CD-ROM instead.
  213.  
  214.      You can also download the Command & Conquer patch, which fixes this
  215.      problem.
