  5. Thank you for choosing WORD BLAST. LeMonds Software hopes that
  6. you have many hours of enjoyment playing the game and learning
  7. new words.

  10. WHAT is WORD BLAST?
  11. -------------------
  12.  
  13. WORD BLAST is an educational program designed to help 
  14. children enhance their vocabulary and spelling skills in
  15. a fun computer game setting (adults enjoy the game too).
  16. In WORD BLAST, the player tries to guess a word 
  17. letter-by-letter, as in the game of hangman. When a 
  18. letter is correctly guessed, it is displayed in its 
  19. position(s) in the word. Otherwise, a segment of the 
  20. fuse leading to a bundle of dynamite "burns". If the 
  21. word is completed before 10 incorrect guesses, then the 
  22. player wins the game and receives an audio complement. 
  23. If not, then the dynamite "explodes". Children rarely 
  24. lose a game since the definition of the word may be 
  25. viewed before the fuse burns completely.
  26.  
  27. The game may be played either in the blast mode 
  28. (described above), or in the vocabulary-builder mode, in 
  29. which the definition of the word is displayed from the
  30. outset. The latter playing mode makes the game easier
  31. for young children, and makes WORD BLAST the ideal 
  32. medium for helping to teach children the meanings of the
  33. words on their weekly vocabulary lists from school.
  34.  
  35. New words and their definitions may be added in WORD 
  36. BLAST via easy-to-use menus for the creation and editing 
  37. of word lists. In addition, points are awarded when a 
  38. word is correctly identified, and the names of the top 
  39. ten scorers appear on a scoreboard with trophies.

  41. With WORD BLAST, learning vocabulary and spelling is a 
  42. "blast".

  52. INSTALLING WORD BLAST is EASY
  53. -----------------------------

  55. The procedure for installing WORD BLAST on your computer is very
  56. straightforward. If you have received WORD BLAST on a 3.5"
  57. diskette, then there is a setup program on the diskette which
  58. will guide you through the installation. If you obtained WORD
  59. BLAST via an Internet download, then the installation is manual,
  60. but is still very easy. Complete instructions for installing WORD
  61. BLAST are given below for both cases.

  63. A setup program is not provided in the ZIP file obtained over the
  64. Internet since the size of the setup program is about twice as large
  65. as the size of the compressed WORD BLAST files in the ZIP file.
  66. Accordingly, the Internet download proceeds much faster without the
  67. setup program.

  70. WORD BLAST FOLDER
  71. -----------------

  73. The installation instructions assume that WORD BLAST is to be
  74. installed in the following folder:
  75.  
  76.     C:\Program Files\Word Blast
  77.  
  78. However, you are free to install the program in any new folder of
  79. your choice.
  80.

  82. INSTALLING WORD BLAST from a ZIP FILE
  83. OBTAINED from an INTERNET DOWNLOAD
  84. -------------------------------------

  86. 1) Unzip (decompress) the ZIP file wdblst10.zip using any standard
  87.    file unzipping software (available on the Internet).
  88.  
  89.    Unzip the WORD BLAST files into the folder
  90.     C:\Program Files\Word Blast.
  91.  
  92.    If the unzipping utility has the option to "Use Folder Names",
  93.    make sure that option is activated (checked) so that the correct
  94.    sub-folders will be created within the WORD BLAST folder. 
  95.  
  96. 2) Check to see that the WORD BLAST files which are in your new
  97.    folder C:\Program Files\Word Blast match those shown in the
  98.    "Packing List" below. In order for the program to work properly,
  99.    the directory structure shown in the Packing List must be
  100.    maintained, i.e. the folders "res" and "Word Lists" must be
  101.    located in the folder in which you installed WORD BLAST, along
  102.    with the WORD BLAST executable file WordBlast.exe.
  103.  
  104.    WORD BLAST is essentially installed at this point, and is ready
  105.    to run. However, you should probably will want to create a
  106.    short cut to the WORD BLAST executable on the Start menu or
  107.    on the Desktop, as explained in the next step.
  108.  
  109. 3) You may create a short-cut to the WORD BLAST executable in the
  110.    Windows95 Start menu, enabling you to launch WORD BLAST from the
  111.    Start menu when you wish to play the game.
  112.  
  113.    One way to do this is as follows: Open the folder
  114.     C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
  115.    Then, open the folder
  116.     C:\Program Files\Word Blast
  117.    Next, left-click on the WORD BLAST executable WordBlast.exe
  118.    (the file with the "dynamite" icon), then with the cursor on the
  119.    highlighted file, right-click and while holding the right mouse
  120.    button, drag the file WordBlast.exe into the other folder (the
  121.    start menu folder). Next, release the right mouse button, and a
  122.    small menu will pop up. Left-click on "Create Shortcut Here" in
  123.    that menu.

  125.    Now, in order to run WORD BLAST, simply left-click on the Start menu,
  126.    then left-click on Programs, then left-click on WordBlast (you
  127.    should also see the dynamite icon in the start menu).

  130. INSTALLING WORD BLAST from a 3.5" Diskette
  131. ------------------------------------------

  133. The SETUP PROGRAM
  134. -----------------

  136. Installation of WORD BLAST from a 3.5" diskette is very easy.
  137. A complete SETUP program has been prepared to install the program
  138. on your computer. The setup program guides you through the installation
  139. process, and performs the following functions via on-screen displays
  140. and menus:
  141.  
  142. 1) Shows a WELCOME message.
  143.  
  144. 2) Displays the license agreement and registration
  145.    information (for users of the shareware version
  146.    of the program).
  147.  
  148. 3) Allows you to specify the name of the folder
  149.    (directory) in which to install the WORD BLAST files
  150.    (the default is C:\Program Files\Word Blast).
  151.  
  152. 4) Installs the WORD BLAST files.
  153.  
  154. 5) Enters a "short-cut" to the WORD BLAST executable
  155.    in your Start menu, under Start->Programs.

  157. HOW to RUN the SETUP PROGRAM from a 3.5" DISKETTE

  160. To install WORD BLAST from a 3.5" diskette, execute the
  161. setup program A:\SETUP.EXE (this assumes that your floppy
  162. disk drive is labeled "A") and follow the on-screen instructions.
  163.  
  164. For example, one way to invoke the setup program is as follows:
  165.  
  166.     1) Left-click on the Start Button in the taskbar
  167.     2) Left-click on Run
  168.     3) Enter A:\SETUP.EXE in the "Open" text field in the
  169.        Run menu
  170.     4) Press OK in the Run Menu
  171.  
  172. The WORD BLAST setup program will begin to run. Follow the simple
  173. on-screen instructions. The entire installation process takes only
  174. a few minutes on most machines.
  175.  
  176. None of the files on the diskette need to be manually copied to your
  177. drive. The setup program will copy all the files which are required
  178. in order to run WORD BLAST on your computer.

  181. HOW to RUN WORD BLAST

  184. You can start WORD BLAST using the short-cut in your Start menu if
  185. you created one, or using the one which was created for you if you
  186. installed WORD BLAST via the setup program on the 3.5" diskette.

  188. To run WORD BLAST, left-click Start, then left-click Programs, then
  189. left-click Word Blast.
  190.  
  191. You can also run WORD BLAST by double-left-clicking directly on the
  192. icon for the WORD BLAST executable, 
  193.  
  194.     C:\Program Files\Word Blast\WordBlast.exe

  200. Following installation, you should find the following files on
  201. your hard drive. Please note that while the name of the WORD BLAST
  202. folder is your choice, the following directory structure must be
  203. maintained so that WORD BLAST knows where to find the files it needs
  204. in order to operate properly.

  244. The word lists for WORD BLAST are stored in the folder named
  245. "Word Lists", which is in the WORD BLAST folder. Assuming that you
  246. used the default WORD BLAST folder, the word lists are in:
  247.     C:\Program Files\Word Blast\Word Lists.

  249. WORD BLAST comes with the word list "Words.wds", which contains
  250. over 1700 words and their definitions.
  251.  
  252. If you reinstall WORD BLAST from an Internet download, make sure
  253. that you make a back-up copy of any word lists which you created,
  254. and then restore the word lists in the "Word Lists" folder after
  255. the reinstallation.

  265. SHAREWARE VERSION of WORD BLAST

  268. This is the shareware version of WORD BLAST.

  270. LeMonds Software is happy to grant you a limited license to
  271. use the program for a period of up to 30 days in order to
  272. evaluate the program before purchasing it. The shareware
  273. version is a fully functional version of the program, in
  274. which all features are operational. However, the shareware
  275. version of WORD BLAST will run on your computer for only 30
  276. days following installation.

  279. REGISTER WORD BLAST

  282. Your shareware copy of WORD BLAST may be registered by
  283. obtaining a registration code and entering it via the
  284. Registration Information command in the Register menu.
  285.  
  286. Registration of WORD BLAST affords you continued, unlimited
  287. use of the program beyond the 30-day evaluation period on
  288. the computer(s) on which you register the program. Please
  289. submit payment for the appropriate registration fee for
  290. WORD BLAST to LeMonds Software (the cost for registering
  291. WORD BLAST is listed below). Upon receipt of the 
  292. registration fee, LeMonds Software will promptly send you
  293. a registration code which will enable WORD BLAST to run
  294. beyond the 30-day evaluation period on your computer(s).

  296. To register WORD BLAST, press the Enter Registration Code
  297. button in the Registration Information menu, enter the 
  298. registration code in the text field in the menu, the press 
  299. Enter. Your copy of WORD BLAST will then be registered and 
  300. will work beyond the 30-day evaluation period.

  303. SINGLE COMPUTER LICENSE

  306. A single computer license grants the licensee the right to
  307. install and use the program on a single computer. The
  308. license may be transferred to another computer which is owned
  309. by the licensee at any time as long as the WORD BLAST program
  310. is completely uninstalled from the computer on which it was 
  311. previously licensed.

  313. The cost of a single computer license is:

  315.     $10.00    for a registration code via U.S. mail or e-mail
  316.     $12.00    for a 3.5" diskette sent via U.S. mail

  319. SCHOOL LICENSE

  322. A school license grants a single school the right to use
  323. WORD BLAST on any of the computers in the school, as long
  324. as the school is part of a local school district, as
  325. opposed to a statewide or nationwide group of schools.

  327. The cost of a school license is  $50.00.

  330. SCHOOL DISTRICT LICENSE

  333. A special license may be obtained for a school district.
  334. That license permits WORD BLAST to be used on any computer
  335. in any school within the school district. A representative
  336. of a school district should contact LeMonds Software at 
  337. the address shown below to negotiate a fee for such a 
  338. license. The fee, which will depend on the size of the 
  339. district, provides a low-cost method for using WORD BLAST 
  340. in all of the schools throughout the district.
