-
- Definition of Shareware
-
- Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before buying it.
- If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are expected to
- register. Individual programs differ on details -- some request registration
- while others require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
- registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue using the
- software to an updated program with printed manual.
-
- Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and the
- copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as stated
- below. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like commercial
- authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In both cases, there
- are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
- distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy and distribute
- the software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group. For example,
- some authors require written permission before a commercial disk vendor may
- copy their Shareware.
-
- Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should find
- software that suits your needs and pocket, whether it's commercial or
- Shareware. the Shareware system makes fitting your needs easier, because you
- can try before you buy. And because the overhead us low, prices are low also.
- Shareware has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
- product, you don't pay for it.
-
- DISCLAIMER - AGREEMENT
-
- Users of International Cricket must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
-
- "INTERNATIONAL CRICKET IS SUPPLIED AS IS. THE AUTHOR DISCLAIMS ALL
- WARRANTIES, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, THE
- WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND OF FITNESS FOR ANY PURPOSE. THE AUTHOR
- ASSUMES NO LIABILITY FOR DAMAGES, DIRECT OR CONSEQUENTIAL, WHICH MAY RESULT
- FROM THE USE OF INTERNATIONAL CRICKET."
-
- International Cricket is a "Shareware program" and is provided at no charge to
- the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your friends, but please
- do not give it away altered or as part of another system. The essence of
- "user supported" software is to provide personal computer users with quality
- software without high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
- continue to develop new products. If you find this program useful and find
- that you are using International Cricket and continue to use International
- Cricket after a 30 day period, you must make a registration fee of at least 15
- UKP or US$ 25 to Daniel Thomas. The registration fee will licence one copy
- for use on any one computer at any one time. You must treat this software
- just like a book. An example is that this software may be used by any number
- of people and may be freely moved from one computer to another, so long as
- there is no possibility of it being used at one location while it's being used
- at another. Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons at the
- same time.
-
- Commercial users of International Cricket must register and pay for their
- copies of International Cricket within 30 days of first use or their licence
- is withdrawn. Site-Licence arrangements may be made by contacting Daniel
- Thomas.
-
- Anyone wishing to distribute International Cricket for any kind of
- remuneration must first satisfy the requirements outlined in Appendix 2 or the
- file VENDOR.TXT
-
- You are encouraged to pass a copy of International Cricket along to your
- friends for evaluation. Please encourage them to register their copy if they
- find that they can use it. All registered users will receive a copy of the
- latest version of International Cricket.

-
- Playing a League
-
- Perhaps the best feature of International Cricket is the ability to play a
- League. This allows you to play home and away series of how ever many tests
- you decide with several squads playing. This allows you to see how good you
- are against all the other teams. Each squad can be player or computer
- controlled and points are awarded for winning/drawing/tieing tests.
-
- Points are awarded as follows:
-
- - 3 points for winning a Test
- - 2 points each for tieing a Test
- - 1 point each for drawing a Test
- - 0 points for losing a Test
-
- See Start New League for details of how to start a League.
-
- In the Shareware version of International Cricket the League is limited to the
- 2 supplied squads. In the registered version the League can have all 9
- supplied squads play. In the enhanced registered version you can have 10
- squads in a League. The only stipulation is that no one player can appear in
- more than one squad.
-
- A League can be saved part way through and carried on from exactly the same
- point as per normal.
-
- **** Saving data is disabled in the Shareware version of International
- Cricket. ****
-
- For series that are between 2 computer controlled squads the computer will
- display the normal main screen with a line displaying what test it is
- currently playing. If is always possible to get a more detailed look at the
- series by looking at the League Results and viewing a Series Summary.
-
- After each series played involving a human player the latest table is
- displayed showing your position. At the very end of the League the final
- table will be displayed.
-
- If a league is abandoned before its completion then all points will be lost.
- Any completed series in the League will remain in the records if applicable.
-
-
- Playing a Series
-
- A Series can be played as a one off between two teams or as part of a league.
- See Start New Series or Start New League for more details.
-
- At the end of each Series all the series based records are compared with
- performances in the current series and the records updated accordingly.
-
- For series that are between 2 computer controlled squads the computer will
- display the normal main screen with a line displaying what test it is
- currently playing. Tests are played using exactly the same formulas as when a
- human is involved. Records are updated with these performances if applicable.
- When all the tests have been played a Series Summary will be displayed as
- normal. This is with the exception of a League where it will continue onto
- the next series..
-
- At this point all player data with updated career averages, record data and
- ground data is saved to hard disk. If a series is abandoned before its
- completion any records achieved in it will be lost as even though they were
- calculated they were not saved to disk. If a previously saved position is
- loaded in at a later date it will overwrite the data just saved if a series is
- completed.
-
- **** Saving data is disabled in the Shareware version of International
- Cricket. ****
-
-
- Playing a Test
-
- Before you can play a test you need to start a series or league. See Start
- New Series or Start New League for details on how to do that.
-
- Before each test is started a dialog box will appear saying who playing,
- whether they are computer or player controlled, what test number it is and
- where the test is being played.
-
- You will see that the screen has changed and there are now three parts. The
- top part on the left hand side has a toolbar where certain options can be
- selected during the course of the test. If you want to see what they
- represent see the Toolbar Icons section. In order they are:
-
- - Select Batting Aggression
- - Select Bowling Aggression
- - Select Team Aggression
- - Change Bowler
- - Declare Innings
- - View Scoreboard
- - Next Over
-
- The top part on the right hand side has five status icons which are used to
- represent certain factors that may affect the test and your team selection.
- To see what the icons represent see the relevant section. In order they are:
-
- - State of the Ball
- - State of the Pitch
- - Bounce
- - Speed of Outfield
- - Current Weather
-
- The middle part of the screen will be initially green. This is where the
- details for the overs will appear. For more details on the icons that will
- appear here see the Game Icons section.
-
- The bottom part of the screen will be initially black. This is used to
- display a summary of the current innings and previous innings that may have
- been completed.
-
- When you have noted what the status icons are showing click on the OK button
- to continue.
-
-
- Picking your Team
-
- You will be shown a dialog box asking you to select your team. If you wish to
- review the status icons you can move this window out of the way and the main
- window will be visible underneath.
-
- The details shown in this window are:
-
- - Checkbox to select/deselect a player
- - Players name
- - Players batting type, there are several categories of batsman:
- - Openers
- - Specialist batsman
- - Allrounders
- - Late Order
- - Tailenders
- - Batting Skill
- - Players bowling type, there are several categories of bowlers:
- - Unknown, normally a non-bowler
- - Off Spin
- - Leg Spin
- - Slow
- - Medium
- - Medium Fast
- - Fast Medium
- - Fast
- - Wicketkeeper, a wicket keeper can not bowl
- - Bowling Skill or Keeping skill in the case of a wicket keeper
- - Current Morale, this can be one of the following:
- - Rock Bottom
- - Bad
- - Poor
- - Okay
- - Fair
- - Good
- - High
- - Sky High
- - Status, this will be Not Selected or the current batting position in
- the team
-
- Batting Skill is based on a players career batting average, thus a batting
- skill of 45 represents a player who has a career batting average of 45.
- Bowling skill is based upon 70 - career bowling average, thus a bowling skill
- of 45 represents a player who has a career bowling average of 25. The Keeper
- skill is based upon the average number of dismissals per match. In all cases
- the higher the number the better the player is.
-
- When picking your team you also need to take into account a players morale. A
- player who has a morale of Sky High effectively has 4 points added onto his
- skills for the duration of the test. Conversely a player whose morale is Rock
- Bottom has 3 points subtracted from his skills. All players start with an
- initial morale of Okay. A players morale is altered at the end of each test
- based upon the number of performance points he got. If a squad wins a test
- every player who played improves their morale by one step. Conversely if a
- squad loses a test every player who played goes down in morale. A players
- morale is therefore based upon both personal and team performances. If a
- player does not play in a test his morale stays the same whatever the outcome
- of the test.
-
- When selecting your bowlers you may want to take into account the current
- state of the pitch and the expected state of a pitch at the end of the test.
-
- To help you select your team there are several buttons at the bottom of the
- window you can click on to get more information:
-
- - Computer Side, this is the side the computer would select taking all
- the factors into account.
- - Last Test Side, if this is not the first test this will select the
- team you played in the last test.
- - Series Batting Averages, this will display the current series
- batting averages.
- - Series Bowling Averages, this will display the current series
- bowling averages.
- - Career Batting Averages, this will display the squads career batting
- averages.
- - Career Bowling Averages, this will display the squads career bowling
- averages.
-
- If any of this information is currently not available the relevant button will
- be greyed out.
-
- To select a player click on the checkbox by his name. If a player is selected
- a cross will appear. To deselect a player click on the checkbox again and the
- cross will disappear. When you have selected your team click on the OK button
- to continue. The OK button can only be clicked on when you have selected a
- team of 11 players.
-
- It is not necessary to pick a certain numbers of batsmen or bowlers. If you
- pick only one opener you will need to nominate another player to open the
- batting. If you pick less than four bowlers the computer will display a
- warning dialog box telling you this but it will allow you to continue by
- clicking on the OK button of the warning dialog box.
-
-
- The Toss
-
- The Toss is decided at the start of a test. The away team always calls. If
- the away team is a human player a dialog box will be displayed asking you to
- select heads or tails. The name of the squad with the call is shown in the
- titlebar of the dialog box.
-
- Click on the Heads button to select heads.
- Click on the Tails button to select heads.
-
- If the away team is computer controlled a dialog box will be displayed showing
- what the computer has called. Click on the OK button to continue.
-
- If a human player wins the toss a dialog box will be shown asking you to
- select whether to bat or bowl first. The name of the squad that won the toss
- is shown in the titlebar of the dialog box.
-
- Click on the Bat button to elect to bat first.
- Click on the Bowl button to elect to bowl first.
-
- The current status icons may help you to make this decision.
-
- If a computer controlled team wins the toss a dialog box will be shown
- displaying who won the toss and what they decided to do. Click on the OK
- button to continue.
-
-
- Starting an Innings
-
- At the start of each innings you need to select your opening batsmen or
- bowlers.
-
- If a human player is batting a dialog box will be displayed asking you to
- select your openers.
-
- A list of all the batsmen in your side is shown along with their batting
- style. The players may be listed in a different order than you originally
- picked as the computer selects what it reckons is the best batting order for
- you. The first available batsman is automatically selected for you. To
- select another batsman click on the radio button by his name. When you have
- selected the batsman you want click on the OK button to continue. You now
- have to go through a similar procedure to pick your other opening batsman.
-
- If a human player is bowling a dialog box will be displayed asking you to
- select your starting bowlers.
-
- A list of all the players in your side is shown along with their bowling
- style. It is not possible to select a wicket keeper to bowl. To select a
- bowler click on the radio button by his name. When you have selected the
- bowler you want click on the OK button to continue. You now have to go
- through a similar procedure to pick your other opening bowler.
-
- Once you have selected your opening batsman/bowlers you might want to change
- your starting team/player aggression levels. By default they are set to very
- defensive. To change them click on the relevant icon in the toolbar as
- described previously.
-
-
- Playing an Innings
-
- To play the next over click on the left mouse button or select Next Over from
- the menu/toolbar. The name of the bowler will appear along with a row of
- icons after it representing what happened during that over. For help on what
- the icons may represent see the Games Icons section. For each successive over
- the details will appear below the last. Once the screen is full, the overs
- will scroll up. At any one time you can see the outcome of every ball of the
- previous 7 overs.
-
- The bottom scoreboard is updated as required. The information it shows is:
-
- - The current day and time
- - Whose Batting and which innings it is
- - How many overs the innings has been in progress
- - The current score and number of wickets to have fallen
- - The names and scores of the current batsman
- - The details of the last wicket if applicable
- - Previous innings score if applicable
- - The Target score if in 4th innings
-
- Before starting the next over you can change the following by selecting them
- from the Test menu or clicking on the relevant icon on the toolbar. Some of
- these are only applicable if a you are currently batting or bowling:
-
- - Change Batting Aggression

- spin bowler. At lunch, tea and stumps a scoreboard will be displayed and the
- time and day adjusted accordingly when you continue.
-
- When a wicket falls a dialog box will appear to inform you. This makes sure

-
- To continue click on the OK button. If a human player is batting you will be
- asked to select the next batsman in the same way that you selected the
- openers.
-
- After 85 overs a new ball becomes available. If a human player is bowling a
- dialog box will be displayed asking if you wish to take the new ball.
-
- Click on the Yes button to take the new ball.
- Click on the No button to continue with the current ball. You will be
- prompted at the end of every subsequent over whether you want to take the new
- ball again.
-
- If a computer controlled player is bowling a dialog box will be displayed
- informing you that the computer has taken the new ball. To continue click on
- the OK button.
-
- The current status icons are updated at the end of each over. If you want
- more details on what these represent see the Status Icons section later. If
- the weather becomes unfit for play then there will be an interruption in play.
- At the resumption of play a dialog box will be displayed saying how long was
- lost to the weather. To continue click on the OK button.

- runs more than the team batting second.
-
- If a human player is in the position where they can enforce the follow on a
- dialog box will be displayed asking if you want to enforce the follow on.
-
- To enforce the follow on click on the Yes button.
- To not enforce the follow on click on the No button.
-
- If the computer has the possibility to enforce the follow on a dialog box will

- A dialog box is then displayed showing the performance points awarded in that
- test. Click on the OK button to continue. For a more detailed description of
- performance points see Performance Points.
-
- The computer now updates series and career averages for all the players who
- took part in the test. With the exception of all series based records all
- performances in the test are compared against record performances and the
- records are updated accordingly.
-
- The computer also updates the batting. bowling and fielding ratings of all the
- players in the test.
-
- If you have reached the end of the current series a Series Summary will be
- shown otherwise you will start the next test in the series.

-
- In the International Cricket Simulation players are given a performance rating
- for each Test played. The number of points scored effects a players morale.
- It also allows the user to see which players do consistently well. It is also
- possible to lose points!
-
- The method for scoring points was originally devised by Daniel Thomas and
- amended and improved by Rob Plested.
-
- Batting
-
- When batting a player scores points for:
-
- - Each run scored
- - Each 4 scored
- - Each 6 scored
-
- The amount of points scored depends on the quality of the bowler. Hitting a 6
- off Ambrose will score more points than a 6 off Atherton.
-
- - Each 50 scored in an innings
-
- When batting a player loses points for:
-
- - Scoring a duck.
-
- The amount of points lost depends on the skill of the batsman. A player with
- a batting skill of 40 will lose more points than a player with a batting skill
- of 5
-
- The points scored or lost for batting are used to calculate a players current
- batting rating.
-
- Bowling
-
- When bowling a player score points for:
-
- - Each wicket taken
- - Each maiden bowled
-
- The amount of points scored depends on the quality of the batsman. Bowling
- Lara will score more points than bowling Malcolm.
-
- - 5 wickets in an innings
- - 10 wickets in an innings
- - 10 wickets in a test
-
- When bowling a player loses points for:
-
- - Each no-ball bowled
- - Each wide bowling
-
- - Wicket less analysis
-
- The amount of points lost depends on the number of runs conceded. Figures of
- 0-137 will lose more points than figures of 0-11.
-
- The points scored or lost for bowling are used to calculate a players current
- bowling rating.
-
- Fielding
-
- When fielding a player scores points for:
-
- - Each catch
- - Each run out
- - Each stumping (Applies to wicket keeper only)
-
- When fielding a player loses points for:
-
- - Each dropped catch
- - Each missed stumping
- - Each bye conceded (Applies to wicket keeper only)
-
- The points scored or lost for fielding are used to calculate a players current
- fielding rating.
-
- At the end of a tests the points won and lost for batting, bowling and
- fielding are totalled up and used to calculate the points statistics.
-
- A poor performance is considered to be less than 300 points.
- A okay performance is considered to be between 300 and 600 points.
- A good performance is considered to be between 600 and 900 points.
- A very good performance is considered to be above 900 points.
- An excellent performance is considered to be above 1500 points.
-
- The performance points will favour good allrounders slightly. A consistent
- player will have an average score of over 600 points.
-
- When calculating a players batting, bowling and fielding ratings a complex
- formula is used. It takes into account previous ratings with most importance
