- USING "LET'S PLAY CHECKERS," (C) COPYRIGHT 1991 BY DON LUNDMAN

-
- System Requirements.
-
- "Let's Play Checkers" requires CGA or higher and a color monitor.
-
-
-
- Starting "Let's Play Checkers"
-
- Make sure you are on the drive and in the directory where you keep
- the file CHECKERS.EXE. Then just type CHECKERS (or checkers).
-
- You can, of course, start from any drive or directory if your
- command line includes a path to the program file. For example, if
- you keep CHECKERS.EXE on drive C in a directory named GAMES, you
- could start the program by typing:
-
- c:\games\checkers
-
- But before you try that you should be aware that when you decide to
- save an unfinished game, the program will store it in the current
- directory, whatever that happens to be. So if you are on drive A in
- a directory named LETTERS when you type the command C:\GAMES\CHECKERS
- the program will start just fine, but any games you save will end up
- in A:\LETTERS. Not very tidy.
-
- Take my advice: First switch to the drive and directory where you
- keep the program (eg, type CD C:\GAMES). Then start the program
- (type CHECKERS). Even better, write a batch file that will change
- directories and start the program for you. If you don't know how to
- write batch files, it's time you learned. Get a copy of a book like
- Van Wolverton's excellent "Running MS-DOS" and get busy.
-
-
-
- Getting Ready to Play
-
- «Step 1» When you start the program, you'll see a title screen,
- followed by a screen with a brief note about the rules. Read the
- rules, and then press any key.
-
-
- «Step 2» Now you have a checkerboard in front of you. Near the
- bottom of the screen you'll see the instruction, "Please type your
- name." Type your name (no more than 10 characters, please).
-
-
- «Step 3» Next the program will check the current directory for
- saved games (more about saving an unfinished game later). If there
- are none, you can go on to Step 4.
-
- [Page 2]
-
- If the program finds some saved games, it will ask you if you want
- to load one of them. If you don't want to, just say no (type n or
- N). Go to Step 4.
-
- On the other hand, if you do want to continue a game, type y (or Y).
- The program will then display the first file name in a list of saved
- games.
-
- Thumb through the list by pressing the up or down arrow keys.
- ┌─────┐
- When you find the file you want, press │Enter│ and your game will load.
- You can go on to Playing the Game. └─────┘
- ┌───┐
- If you decide you don't want to load a saved game after all, press │Esc│
- and go to the next step. └───┘
-
-
- «Step 4» You will be asked to type your opponent's name. If you
- want to play the computer, type computer (or COMPUTER). Otherwise,
- type your opponent's name, skip Step 5 and go to Step 6.
-
-
- «Step 5» You will be asked to select a skill level for the
- computer player.
-
- Skill levels range from 1 to 4. The higher the level, the greater
- the skill with which the computer will play -- and the longer the
- time it will take to decide on a move. At levels 1 through 3 the
- delay will be negligible. But at skill level 4 the computer can take
- several minutes to decide, especially if you've got its back
- against a wall.
-
- Change levels by pressing the up or down arrow keys.
- ┌─────┐
- When you decide on a level, press │Enter│.
- └─────┘
-
- «Step 6» You will be asked to pick a checker. If you look at the
- center of the checkerboard, you'll see two checkers, one colored red
- (or, if you have a CGA system, magenta), the other white. A
- box-shaped cursor is blinking over the checker on the left. (On a
- VGA-equipped system, the cursor may be a little difficult to see.
- That's why it blinks.) If you select the red checker, you will have
- the first move. If you select the white checker, your opponent will
- move first. You will make this choice only once each time you run
- the program. Thereafter, players alternate the first move.
-
- Move the cursor by pressing the left or right arrow keys.
- ┌─────┐
- Make your choice by pressing │Enter│. You are now ready to play.
- └─────┘

- Playing the Game
-
-
- « Selecting a piece » Select a piece to move by using the arrow keys
- to place the blinking, box-shaped cursor over one of your pieces.
- ┌─────┐
- When you have the cursor on the piece you want to move, press │Enter│.
- The piece will disappear. In its place you will see a circle. └─────┘
-
-
-
- « Changing your mind » If you change your mind and want to move ┌─────┐
- another piece, put the cursor on the square with the circle, press │Enter│
- again, and the piece will reappear. Now select another piece. └─────┘
-
-
- ┌─────┐
- « Selecting a move » Just put the cursor on a square and press │Enter│.
- If you can jump more than one piece, you'll need to do this └─────┘
- several times.
-
- ┌────┐
- « Getting help » If you want the computer's advice, press │ F1 │.
- └────┘
-
- ┌───┐
- « Quitting » If you want to leave a game before it's over, press │Esc│.
- You'll be given a chance to save the unfinished game, should you └───┘
- want to do so.

- Saving a Game
-
- Whenever you leave a game before it's over, you will be asked if you
- want to save it. If you don't, press n (or N). The computer will
- decide a winner based on the value of the pieces each player has
- remaining on the board.
-
- If you do want to save the game, press y (or Y). You'll be asked to
- type a file name. (If the game you're saving was one you previously
- saved and still have not finished, the file name for that game will
- appear. You may want to keep the same name; if so, you needn't type
- anything. But whether you change the name or not, you'll still need
- to save the game again; the old file no longer exists.)
- ┌─────┐
- When you're done typing, press │Enter│.
- └─────┘
- You'll be asked if you want to play another game. If you do, press y
- (or Y). Otherwise, press n (or N), and have a nice day!
