Following is some information regarding Sticker Store's installation options.
1. Windows 3.1: Choose Run... from the File menu in the Windows Program Manager
and type D:\Setup (where D: is your CD-ROM drive.)
Windows 95: Go to Start>Run. Type in D:\Setup (where D: is your CD-ROM
drive.)
The install program will prompt you to select one of three choices:
A. Normal Install. You can partially install the program to your hard disk.
This option copies a minimum of files to your hard disk, while maintaining FULL
functionality of the program. This is the recommended option.
B. Run from the CD-ROM. You can run the CD-ROM directly from your
CD-ROM drive, without installing any files to your hard drive. While
no hard disk space is used, the program may run a little slower using this
option, plus, you won't be able to use to the Address Book.
(For both options A and B, you will need to have the CD-ROM in your drive while using the
program.)
C. Install to the Hard Drive. You can install the whole program to your hard
disk. The program will run faster using this option than when using option A, you
don't need to have the CD-ROM in the drive while running the program,
and you maintain FULL functionality of the program.
If you're reinstalling Sticker Store for any reason, you should go into the File Menu in the
Windows Program Manager or Windows Explorer and delete the Sticker directory and all Sticker
files. If you want to save any saved template files, BEFORE you delete the directory, look for
the .spg (page) or .stk (sticker) file, copy it to a disk or temporary directory, delete the
sticker directory, reinstall the program, and then copy the file(s) back to the new directory.
Do the same for address files, copying the data subdirectory.
Chapter 1: Quick Tour
If you're short on time, are already familiar with other Windows-based programs, and just can't
wait to read this entire manual before you start creating, then this section is ideal for you.
We'll give you a quick tour of the program, then take you step-by-step through two complete
examples. We'll cover the basics - creating a sticker using a preformatted design and designing
a sticker starting with a blank template.
Step 1: Getting Started
Start up Sticker Store by double clicking on the icon in the Windows Program Manager or by
clicking on the Windows 95 Start button. Then go to Programs>DogByte applications>Sticker Store.
You'll be greeted with the opening screen which gives you four choices:
o New Create a new set of Stickers.
o Open Open a sticker page that you have already created.
o Help Bring up the help system.
o Exit Exit the program.
Since this is your first time in Sticker Store, choose New.
Step 2: Selecting a Sticker Stock
The first screen that will appear will be the Select a Sticker Type dialog. This screen lets
you choose what type of sticker you'd like to create and shows you how each of the sticker
sizes lay out on a full sheet. The top half of the dialog offers a menu of sticker choices.
Each option lists the size, a description, and the AveryTM stock number. The bottom half gives
you a pictorial of the sticker page, as well as further specifications such as the number of
Stickers across, number of Stickers down, height, and width.
Choose the type of sticker you want to work on by either single clicking in the menu on the
top half of the screen, then pressing OK; or by double clicking on the menu choice. The main
worksheet for Sticker Store will then be displayed.
Notice at the bottom of the dialog, you have three choices.
* Customize -This option lets you specify the dimensions of a sticker stock that was not among the stocks listed.
* Cancel - If you decide that you would like to open a pre-saved page of
Stickers, you can click on cancel and then go to File> Open in the
next screen.
* OK - When you have highlighted the size and type of sticker you would like
to use, press OK. You will then be brought to a clean Sticker Store
workspace.
Step 3: Getting Accustomed to the Screen
Notice the layout of the screen - the left hand side displays a picture of the sticker page,
and the right hand side shows the current sticker you are working on. You can adjust the
workspace to make either the current sticker or the sticker Preview Page larger. The double
line separating the two areas can be dragged either to the left or right.
On the far right you'll find the vertical Stamp Bar, which allows you to add additional
graphics to any sticker. Use the large arrows at either end of the Stamp Bar to scroll
through our hundreds of stamp graphics. You can also use the alphabet letters to the right
of the stamp bar-- called the Stamp Navigator-- to quickly zip to the first category of
stamps starting with each letter.
At the bottom of the screen, you will see the horizontal preformatted sticker section. The
category name is listed above the four boxes, and you can use the large arrow buttons on
either side of the Sticker Bar to view additional options. As with the Stamp Bar, you can
use the alphabet letters - Sticker Navigator - below the designs to quickly view additional
sticker categories.
Once you've found a preformatted sticker that you want to work on, single click on it. The
design will appear in the workspace on the right hand side of the screen. You can then
modify it by adding text or stamp graphics, or print it as is. Sticker Store gives you the
tools you need to be as creative as you like!
Step 4: Personalizing Stickers
Adding personalized text and graphics to your Stickers is easy! Starting with the blank
workspace, or with a preformatted design, add a stamp first by clicking on it in the Stamp
Bar. It will appear in the top left hand corner of your sticker. You can then resize it by
single clicking on it, and once the handles appear around it, drag on one of the corner
handles until it is the size you desire. (Notice that the cursor turns into an arrow when
placed over any of the boxes - this means you are ready to resize.) When placed in the middle
of a selected stamp, the cursor turns into a four-direction cursor - this allows you to
reposition the stamp anywhere inside the sticker.
Add text to Stickers by clicking on the "A" button on the Stamp Bar. A blue-dotted line
rectangle will appear in the top left hand corner. Click anywhere on the blue-dotted line,
and when the handles appear you can resize it. You can move the text box by placing the
cursor in the middle of the box until you see the four direction tool and dragging it to
the desired position. Type in your text, then go up to the toolbar and select your desired
font. Since Sticker Store runs off Windows TrueType fonts, you can use any fonts you have
installed on your system.
Example 1: Creating & printing an address sticker using a preformatted design.
1. Select New at the opening screen.
2. Choose a sticker template. For this example, choose a 2" x 4" Address/Shipping
sticker stock; then press OK.
3. Choose a preformatted design by clicking on one of the boxes at the bottom
of the screen.
4. Add a text box by clicking on the "A" button on the bottom of the vertical
Stamp Bar on the right. A text box will appear in the top left hand corner of
your sticker.
5. Once you've sized and positioned the text box, click anywhere outside of the
text box to deselect it. Then single click inside the text box. You'll see the
cursor turn into an I-beam, now you can begin typing your text. For this
example, enter an address. (You can use ours if you like - DogByte
Development, 612 Moulton Avenue, Ste. 7, Los Angeles, CA 90031.)
6. Reformat font, style and size by highlighting the text, then going up to the
tool bar. Select a different font, style or size by single clicking on your prefer-
ence.
7. You can add additional clip art "stamp graphics" if you'd like to, by clicking
on them in the stamp bar. You resize and reposition stamp graphics just as
you would text boxes.
8. Voila - your sticker is finished!
9. To print a single sticker, place the cursor on one of the blank Stickers in the page pictured on the left hand side of the screen and single click. A menu will
appear with four choices - Place Sticker Here, Edit This Sticker, Clear This
Sticker, or Place on all Stickers. Click on Place Sticker Here, and your sticker
will appear in the box that you selected. You can then print by clicking on the
print icon in the tool bar. Make sure you select the right printer, and for the
first go around, just accept the defaults and press OK. For complete informa-
tion on printing, refer to the Printing Issues section.
Since Sticker Store's preformatted designs contain many full-color
backgrounds, it's recommended that you print a test page on a plain sheet of
paper before printing on sticker stock. Test printing on a plain sheet of paper
gives you the opportunity to adjust for any shifts in printing, thus ensuring
that your Stickers print correctly. All printers have different issues to deal with
regarding registration, so please refer to the section of this manual on
Printing Issues before you begin printing.
Please note that you can select the specific sticker that you print on, so you can do "one-up"
Stickers without wasting valuable sticker stock. Keep refeeding the same stock until you
have printed on all available Stickers on the page.
Example 2: Creating a sticker starting with a blank template.
1. Select New under the File menu.
2. Choose a sticker template. For this example, choose a 2 1/2" X 2 1/2" Round
sticker; press OK.
3. The right hand side is your blank sticker workspace. Let's first add a color
background: Go up to the Tool Bar and click on the Font or Background
Color menu. Choose one of the 16 available colors, and you will see the new
background color replace the white background in your current sticker.
4. Add graphics by choosing from the hundreds of stamp graphics in the verti-
cal stamp bar. Simply click on any stamp you choose and it will appear in
your sticker. To resize and reposition a stamp as you would a text box, refer
to the above example - #5.
5. Add more stamps if you like. Using the up and down arrow keys, find anoth-
er stamp image that you would like to place on your sticker. Click on it, then
move it and resize it as you choose.
6. Add a text box the same way as you did in the previous example -- see #4-5.
7. You're ready to print out your sample sticker. Printing a sticker is also the
same as the previous sample -- see #10.
Ok, that's the end of our quick tour. For more in-depth instructions and explanations, please read on!
Chapter 2: Creating Stickers
Sticker Store was designed to be an easy-to-use, time saving program. The idea is that you can
be as creative as you want. You can choose from a preformatted design and leave it as it is,
you can add text and Stamp Graphics to any preformatted designs, or you can start with a blank
template and build your design from scratch. It's up to you!
Sticker Store is designed to work with most of the popular AveryTM sticker stocks. Or you can
also use any other sticker stock using the Customize option. Using different sticker stocks,
you can design many different types of Stickers: address, return address, diskette, file folder, shipping, audio cassette, video cassette, name badges and more. Plus, using special Avery sticker stock you can even make professional-looking business cards, laminated identification cards or luggage tags.
Avery sticker stock is available in most major office product stores. Or, for special Avery
assortment packs designed specifically for Sticker Store, call us directly at (800) 9-DOGBYTE
(936-4298).
The first thing you need to do in Sticker Store (after pressing New at the opening screen) is
to select the sticker stock. Do this by choosing Select a Sticker Type. The top of the dialog
lists all of the available sticker choices by size, description, and Avery stock number. Use
the scroll bars on the right hand side to view all of your options. Notice that when you click
on one of the choices, a picture of the actual page as well as additional information about
that stock is displayed on the bottom half of the dialog. Compare your actual sticker stock
with the one pictured on the screen to ensure a correct match! Once you have the stock that
you want to work with highlighted, press OK.
Note: Sticker Store is designed to work with full page, 8 1/2" x 11" size sheets of sticker
stock. If your printer can accommodate half sheets, you can simply select the corresponding
full sheet selection of the stock that you have, keeping in mind that you can only place
designs on the top half of the full sheet displayed on screen.
Customize...
You can customize Sticker Store to work with a just about any sticker stock you may have
using the Customize option at the bottom of the Select a Sticker Type dialog. When you press
the Customize button, a dialog will be displayed that lets you define your custom sticker
page. You will need to enter the following information: the number of Stickers across the
page (columns), number of Stickers down the page (rows), the width of the actual sticker,
the height of the actual page, the top margin of the page(distance from top of page to the
top of the first row of Stickers), left margin, horizontal gap (distance between two sticker
columns), vertical gap (distance between two sticker rows), and a description. Check the
box in the lower left hand corner if you are using a round sticker. Note that all
measurements are in inches. Press the Add button at the bottom of the dialog; your
custom sticker will now appear in the Select a Sticker Type dialog. You can now select
that customized sticker stock just like any of the other Avery stock choices.
We strongly recommend that you print a test page on a plain sheet of paper prior to printing
on sticker stock. Hold the test print up to the sticker stock to make sure your printer will
register the images correctly on the sticker. You may need to make some adjustments. Please
refer to the section on Printing Issues for more information.
Starting With a Blank Template
After you have selected a sticker type from the menu, you'll see the main Sticker Store
screen. The right hand side shows the current sticker; treat it like a blank page that you
can add to in many ways.
Choosing a PreFormatted Sticker Design
The Sticker Bar runs horizontally across the bottom of the screen. This is where you'll find
preformatted designs for Stickers. Use the arrow keys on either end to scroll through and
view different options. The category name is listed above the sticker bar. To select a design,
click on it - it will appear in the workspace on the right hand side of the screen. You are
now ready to add to the design.
Change the Background Color
There are two ways to change the background color of your Stickers. Be aware that you can't
change the colors of the pre-formatted designs - only designs that you create yourself.
o Use the Font or Background Color box on the Tool Bar. Click on the down
arrow, and select the color you would like. Your choice will appear on the
current sticker in the workspace on the right. Remember that if you
have a text box selected, following these steps will change the font color, not
the background.
o Use the Stamp Bar. Sticker Store has many different stamps that
work as great backgrounds for your sticker creations. Some cate-
gories include circles, gradients, squares and blobs. Select the stamp by
clicking on it, and once it appears in the workspace, resize it. Keep in mind
that small stamps are placed on top of larger stamps, so if you using a stamp
as a background color, you will want to resize it as soon as you bring it in.
Add Stamp Graphics
Sticker Store features hundreds of original "stamp" graphics that you can add to your
Stickers. The Stamp Bar is located on the right hand side of the screen and runs vertically
down the side. Use the arrow keys on either end to scroll through all of the different
options. When you find a stamp you would like to use, click on it and the graphic will be
placed in the top left hand corner of the current sticker. You can then reposition and
resize it.
Add Personalized Text
At the bottom of the Stamp Bar you will notice a large letter "A". Use this tool to add text.
Simply click on the "A", and a blue-dotted lined box will appear in the top left hand corner
of the current sticker. Select the text box by clicking anywhere on the blue-dotted line.
When the box is selected, black handles will surround it. Drag on the handles to resize the
text area. Place the cursor in the middle of the box until you see the four direction cursor,
and drag to reposition it. When the text box is positioned and sized to your liking, single
click outside of the sticker to deselect the box, then position the cursor inside the text
box and click to begin typing.
With the cursor positioned inside a text box, you can quickly change font type, color, size,
and style using the Tool Bar. Please note that Sticker Store can support only one font,
color, etc. in a text box.
Moving and Resizing Stamps
You can reposition a stamp in two easy steps:
1. Click on the stamp to select it. Black handles will surround it.
2. With the cursor inside the stamp, drag it to where you'd like it. To resize a
stamp once it is selected, drag on one of the corner boxes to enlarge or shrink
the image.
Importing Your Own Images
You can import .BMP, .WMF, .TIF, .EPS, .JPG, .TIF, .TGA, .PCX, .WPG and .PCT images into
Sticker Store for use in your Stickers. Most graphic applications can export in these
formats. To import an image, go to the File menu and select Import Art. Choose the file
name and file type, then press OK. The image will be placed in your current sticker, and
you can reposition and resize it as you would a stamp. Select it by single clicking on it,
resize it by dragging on the handles, and move it by dragging on the center of the image.
Note: After you import an image, it must remain at the exact location on disk as when you
imported it. Sticker Store does not include the image inside its own document; instead, it
maintains a reference to the graphic image's location on your hard disk. This saves a great
deal of space in the Sticker Store format, but it does mean that you can't move images
around without re-importing them. It's a good idea to keep all of the graphic images you
want to use in the same directory as Sticker Store itself so that you will always be able
to keep track of them.
Saving a Sticker
Sticker Store gives you the ability to save both a single sticker, or a whole page of
Stickers. You can save a whole page of the same sticker, or a mix of different designs.
Save a single sticker by selecting Save Sticker from the File menu. Single sticker files
will have a .stk extension. You can also use the shortcut key on the Tool Bar next to the
font or background color box.
Save an entire page of Stickers that you have created by selecting Save Sticker Page from
the File menu. Sticker page files will have a .spg extension. You can also use the shortcut
key on the Tool Bar (second one from the left).
Preparing a Sticker Page
As you design your Stickers, you have several print options:
o Print a single sticker and save the unused sticker sheet for future
use.
o Print out a full page of one specific sticker.
o Print a full page of various different designs.
When you have a design that you're ready to print, place the cursor on the left hand side
of the screen and click on the exact position on the page where you would like the design
to print. A menu will appear with four choices:
o Place Sticker Here - Places the current sticker in the spot where you
clicked.
o Edit This Sticker - Allows you to go back and edit any Stickers you
have placed on the sticker page on the left hand side of the screen.
o Clear This Sticker - Clears the sticker that you pointed to.
o Place on ALL Stickers- Places the current sticker on all of the spaces
on the page
Note: If you have a small monitor screen (a laptop, for example) and you are using a very
small sticker size, you may have some difficulty viewing the Stickers once you've placed
them on the page on the left hand side of the screen. Some Stickers may not seem to appear
at all, but you can double check by clicking on that sticker and choosing Edit This
Sticker from the menu.
Chapter 3: Printing & Printing Issues
Once you have created one or a few Stickers, you can print them out by selecting Print
from the File menu. Sticker Store uses a standard Print Dialog, with a few additions at
the bottom of the screen. Printing on sticker stock is always tricky, so you may need to
make some adjustments to the print settings. The print dialog is the place to do this.
We have done our best to ensure that you have as many options as you'll need to "tinker"
with your printout for exact placement. Since every printer registration (registration
refers to the way paper feeds in the printer so that the ink goes where the program
expects it to) varies, and printable areas differ from brand to brand, there are no
surefire calculations for perfect printing every time. Also, every single individual
rinter feeds paper differently each time you print. With that in mind, the following
should help you calibrate your printer:
Adjust Your Printer Paper Guides
To make sure that your printer feeds the sticker stock correctly, you should make
sure the paper guides are snug against the paper and set to the correct size.
Use the Right Stock
You should use sticker stock that is made for the type of printer you are using -- inkjet
Stickers for inkjet printers, laser Stickers for laser printers. Since inkjet printers have
smaller printable areas than laser printers, some Stickers for laser printers have much
smaller margins than Stickers made specifically for inkjet printers. Thus, when printing
on an inkjet printer, you cannot print all the way to the edge of the sticker, and the
images close to the margins may be cut off.
Print a Test First!
We strongly recommend that you print a test on plain paper before you actually print on
sticker stock. To print a test, select Print from the File menu, simply accept the defaults
and be sure to select the correct printer. Press OK. Take the test print and hold it up to
the sticker stock you will be printing on. If the images aren't fitting inside all the
Stickers, you then can try several things:
Adjust Scale
If you are using Stickers that extend beyond where the printer can print and your images
are cutting off, you can adjust the scale of the images in the Print dialog. Check the
Scale Stickers To Fit Within Printer Margins item at the bottom of the dialog, and your
designs will be "scaled" to fit within the printable area.
Print Nudge
If your printer consistently registers images just slightly off from where they should be,
try using the Print Nudge located at the bottom of the Print Dialog. You can adjust, or
nudge, the image up, down, left, or right as your print test indicates.
Horizontal Nudge - adjusts images slightly right or left. To nudge the printout
left, enter a negative number. To nudge the image right, enter a positive number.
Vertical Nudge - adjusts the images slightly up or down. To nudge the printout
up, enter a negative number. To nudge the image down, enter a positive number.
Note: The nudge values are in hundredths of an inch. If you want to nudge the image 1/10th
of an inch, enter 10. Entering 50 will nudge the image 1/2 inch. You will probably only
need to nudge images 1/10th of an inch or less, so start with 5, then try 10. Remember,
use negative numbers to nudge an image left (horizontal) and up (vertical), and positive
numbers to nudge right and down.
If this option does not work, it's probably because your printer doesn't have a consistent
registration. Check your paper guides, or try adjusting the Sticker Coverage as described
below.
Sticker Coverage
Sticker Coverage lets you specify a percentage of the actual sticker that you want to print.
You can adjust Sticker Coverage two ways:
Underprinting - For example, if you are printing a sticker with a white
background, and you want to be sure that your images print inside the sticker
area, try adjusting the Sticker Coverage area in the Print Dialog to 90%. This
will print the images at 90% and will leave a margin around the sticker.
You wont be able to print to the edge of the sticker, but you will be sure
that the image prints in the desired area.
You can also use this solution if you are printing an image with a color back ground, but keep in mind that a white margin will surround the image. If 90%
doesn't work, try 85% or 95% until you're satisfied with the results.
Overprinting - You can also overprint to try to get full coverage on your sticker by specifying a percentage over 100%. Start by trying 110%, and adjust to
105% or 115% depending on the results.
Beware: this option may provide full coverage, but the background color of one
sticker may spill over into neighboring ones. Also, be sure to consider the margin
limitations of your particular printer; most printers do not allow for edge-to-edge
printing, hence, you may not be able to achieve full bleed backgrounds on all Stickers
on a page.
If you use overprinting, you may want to try to print out Stickers with
the same color background, or only print on every other sticker on the page.
Stickers to Skip
If you do a lot of "one-up" Stickers, (one or two Stickers at one time), you can refeed the
same sheet of Stickers until they are all used. You can do this one of two ways:
o In the workspace, place Stickers only in spaces on the page where
you actually have Stickers on your sheet.
o If you are printing a sheet of Stickers you already have saved and don't want to
edit the sheet, you can enter an amount in the Number of Stickers to Skip
Before Printing area in the Print dialog. By entering one (1), you are telling
the program to skip the first sticker before starting to print the first sticker on
your sheet. Keep in mind that Sticker Store prints images starting
with the left hand corner and going across, then to the next row and so on
down the page. By skipping "X" number of Stickers before printing, you will
lose "X" number of Stickers from the bottom of the page.
Chapter 4: The Address Book
Sticker Store features a database for storing the names, addresses, and phones numbers of your
family members, friends and associates. Note that if you are running Sticker Store straight
from the CD-ROM, the Address Book is disabled. You will need to select Normal Install or Full
Install when you run the CD-ROM to utilize the Address Book.
To open the Address Book, go to the File menu and select Address Book. The first screen that
you will see will be the listing of addresses that are saved in the database. We've provided
you with a few examples to get you going.
The Address Book has a few new commands under the File menu that can only be accessed when
you are in the Address Book. Close lets you exit the Address Book and takes you back to your
current sticker workspace.
You can easily print out a copy of the addresses you enter into the address book by selecting
Print from the File menu. Select Print Preview to view what your printout will look like.
Also, you can easily insert a previously entered address in your sticker using the Address
Book. While working on a sticker, position the cursor within a text box wherever you want the
address inserted. Select Single Address form the Insert menu. Use the drop down menu at the
top of the dialog to choose the address that you want from the list of addresses you have
saved in your address book. You can choose the check-boxes to select just those portions of
the address record that you want inserted into your sticker. Now press OK. The address will
have placed into the text box you selected. You can then change the font style, size, color,
etc.
Also under the File menu, you will notice both Import and Export capabilities. Sticker Store
allows you to import address information from other database programs. In the Import Address
File dialog, choose the file you would like to import and press OK. You will be presented
with another Import dialog, where you will need to match up the information on the left hand
side with the name of the field on the right. (For example: match "Smith" from the left with
Last Name on the right.) Start at the top, and go all the way through the list, pressing
the Bind Contents to Field button at the bottom after each pair. When you are finished,
press OK. The information will be loaded into the Sticker Store database. As with any
database, importing can be a tricky maneuver due to differing spacing, order of data, etc.
so be patient.
You can also export information from the Sticker Store database to another application.
The information is "comma delimited", meaning your information will print out separated by
commas. Under the File menu, select Export; the Export dialog is very similar to a Save
dialog. Once in the dialog box, enter a file name for your address book, with the ".txt"
extension. Press OK. You can now go into another application such as Microsoft Word and
open the address file.
The Address Menu
Once in the Address Book, the Address Menu offers key options to help you manage your database.
Select Mailing List...
Use the Select Mailing List option in conjunction with mail merge. Once you have created a
sticker, place the cursor in a text box to select it. Go to Insert Merge Codes or Individual
Merge Codes to set up what information you would like to merge. Now you are ready to Select
a Mailing List which determines the records that actually get merged. All of the mailing
lists that you have previously created will be listed in the dialog box. Click on the one
you want to use and press OK. You will then be ready to go back to your document and print!
For information on how to create a mailing list, see Edit Mailing Lists.
New Address...
To enter new addresses, go to the Address menu and select New Address. You will be brought
to the Address Book Record dialog. Press Clear at the bottom right hand corner to get a blank
record, and then type in the information. Use tabs between fields. Most of the dialog is
self-explanatory; just fill in the blanks. Once you've entered the address record, press
Save As New at the bottom of the screen to save your new address listing. You can then press
Clear to begin entering another address.
If you want to add the address record you are entering to a previously created mailing list,
press the Mailing List button on the right hand side of the screen when the address record is
displayed. The Add/Remove Address from List dialog will appear; a forward carat symbol ">"
will mark which, if any, mailing lists that record is part of. Click in the dialog on the
lists you would like your record to be included in and press OK. Note: records with only a
company name entered will be placed before the letter "A" in the database.
On the right hand side of the screen, notice the Location box. This allows you to specify
whether the address record you just entered is for that person's home, work, or some other
location. You can enter up to four different records for the same person, and keep them
organized by selecting a different location each time.
Edit Addresses...
To delete or edit previously created addresses, select Edit Addresses from the Address menu.
The same Address Book Record dialog will be displayed. Locate the record you want to edit
using either the large scroll bars in the bottom right hand corner (>>>) (<<<) or the
alphabetical buttons running vertically down the right hand side. You can also use Find
in a blank record, press the Find button, then use the cursor to enter part or all of the
last name of the person you are searching for. Once you have the record you want to edit
displayed, highlight the information you want to change and type the new information over
it. Press the Replace button. Your old address information will now be replaced by the new
information. Delete an entire address record by pressing the Delete button at the bottom
of the dialog. Please beware: you cannot retrieve deleted address records using Undo.
Modify an Address Record and Save Both Old and New Forms
You can also make slight changes to names and addresses in the Address Book and save them
as separate records. For example, if you want to create a record for Mrs. Jane Doe and you
already have a record for her husband, Mr. John Doe, you can pull up the Mr. John Doe
record, change Mr. to Mrs. and John to Jane, then press "Save as New." You'll now have
records for both Jane and John.
Edit Mailing Lists...
To create new mailing lists or edit old ones, select Edit Mailing Lists from the Address
Menu. The Mailing List Creation/Deletion dialog will appear. Your current mailing lists
will be displayed on the left hand side. To create a new list, press the New button. The
cursor will be positioned in the Edit Title box-- enter the name of the mailing list you
are creating. Press Save. Notice that the new list you created appears in the list on the
left. Place the cursor over the new listing and click. You can then edit this new list
just as you would a previously saved list. To edit a list, press the Edit List button.
All of your saved address book entries will be displayed. Click on the entries that you'd
like to add to your list. A forward carat symbol ">" will appear next to your selections.
Click on a record with the ">" symbol again to deselect it. Press OK when you have
completed editing your list. To rename a mailing list, click on the list you want to
alter, press the Rename button, and type in the new name. To delete a mailing list,
click on it in the list on the left, then press the Delete button. Press OK when asked
if you are sure you want to delete this list.
Note that you can have as many mailing lists as you want, and the same address can appear
on any number of mailing lists.
Close the Address Book Dialog
Press the large Exit button at the bottom of the dialog. This will close the dialog and
return you to the Address Book window view. Your work is automatically saved.
Close the Address Book
Choose Close from the File menu. You will be returned to your current Sticker Store page.
Sharing the Address Book
DogByte Development is the proud developer of a line of Store products. If you are using
Sticker Store, and you would like to share the address database you have built with another
Store program, follow these instructions:
1. Choose Address Book from the File Menu.
2. Once you are in the Address Book, choose Share Address Book from the File
Menu.
3. Follow the instructions on the screen and press OK. (For example: If you are
running Sticker Store and would like to share the address book with Stationery Store, you would enter C:\Store\Data\ where C: is the drive you installed the program to and "Store" is the default Stationery Store directory.)
4. You must quit and restart Sticker Store for this change to take effect.
Chapter 5: Using Mail Merge
One of the most powerful features of Sticker Store is the ability to print out a whole
sequence of Stickers using mail merge. This saves an incredible amount of time and work -
just design the document once, and once you've entered merge codes and selected a mailing
list, you'll only need to select print once.
Step 1: Creating a Mailing List
To use mail merge functions, you must first create a mailing list. A mailing list is a list
of address records that you want to use for a particular print job or mailing. For example,
say you're hosting a birthday party, and you want to create mailing Stickers for the
invitations.
1. Go to the Address Book by selecting File>Address Book.
2. Select Edit Mailing Lists from the Address menu.
3. Click New to create a new mailing list; enter the name "Lucy's Party" or
something similar in the Edit Title box, and press the Save button at the
bottom of the dialog.
4. Press the Edit List button, and once in the Address Book Entries dialog,
click on the people's names that you would like to include in your mailing
list. When you're finished, press OK. Press OK again to exit the Edit Mailing
List dialog.
That's it - you've created a mailing list!
Step 2: Design Your Sticker
You are now ready to design your sticker. Choose New Sticker Page from the File menu; select
your sticker type and press OK. Refer to the section in the this manual on Creating Stickers
if you need instructions.
Step 3: Inserting Mail Merge Codes
Once you've got your design to your liking, place the cursor in the text box where you would
like the address book information. You are ready to insert mail merge codes.
If you want to insert a full name and address in a sticker, simply choose Mail Merge from the
Insert menu. Use the check boxes to select which information you would like to merge.
The address preview at the bottom of the dialog displays the codes exactly as they will
appear in your document. When you're ready, press OK. Then use the Tool Bar to adjust
the font, style, size, color etc. just as if the codes were actual text.
If you just want to enter one or a few merge codes, such as only a first name, choose
Individual Mail Merge Codes from the Insert menu. Select the items you want one by one
with the cursor, and they will automatically appear in your document.
Now that you've inserted the mail merge codes, you're ready to select who will be part
of your mailing.
Step 4: Deciding Which Address Records To Print
Choose Selected Addresses from the Insert menu. You'll see the Recipient Address(es)
dialog; all saved addresses in your database will be listed on the left hand side, and
any saved mailing lists will be displayed on the right hand side. You now have several choices:
o Select All of the saved addresses - Choose the Select All button, press OK.
Clear All will deselect all of the addresses so that you can start clean if you
choose to.
o Select an entire mailing list - To choose an entire mailing list select from the
available lists displayed on the right. Click on the one you want to use. Press
OK.
o Select individual addresses - Individually select addresses for inclusion by
clicking on them. A forward carat symbol ">" will appear next to
selected items. Press OK.
Regardless of the option you chose, you're ready to print!
Step 5: Printing With Mail Merge
First, place your designed sticker on the preview page on the left hand side of your screen.
Point the cursor at the first sticker on the page and click. Choose Place on All Stickers
from the menu. You can also use a page of all different designs if you'd like - as long
as all have merge codes. Note that when printing Stickers using mail merge, the information
starts with the first sticker in the top left hand corner and goes across the page, and
then to the next row until all of the records you have selected have printed. You can then
go to the File menu and select Print. The Print Dialog will be displayed - for now simply
accept the defaults. Notice that if you are working with a page of Stickers with six
Stickers on it, and the mailing list that you chose has 24 names on it, the number of
pages in the print dialog will show four (six names to a page). Press OK.
Congratulations, you now know the steps to go through to utilize mail merge functions!
Chapter 6: Reference
Sticker Store follows the standard Microsoft WindowsTM style guides for menu items. If you're
familiar with other Microsoft applications, you shouldn't have trouble navigating through
Sticker Store's menu system. The following pages give you a complete guide through the menus.
File Menu
New Sticker Page
Clears the current workspace and brings up the Select a Sticker Type dialog to start a new
sticker page. (If you haven't already saved your previous document, you will have the chance
to do so.) In the Select... dialog, click on the desired size and type of stock from the
menu, and press OK. A new workspace will be displayed.
New Sticker
Clears the current workspace on the right of the screen and brings up a fresh sticker of
the size you previously selected. Your sticker preview page on the left hand side will
remain untouched, so you can continue to add to it.
Open Sticker Page
Opens a previously saved Sticker Store page, complete with any text or graphics you may have
placed on your Stickers. Keep in mind that you can save a single sticker, or a whole page
with any combination of styles and designs. To open a single saved sticker, go to Open Sticker.
Open Sticker
Opens a previously saved individual sticker. Select from the list of saved files you would
like to open, and press OK.
Close Sticker Page
Closes the workspace and the page of Stickers you were working on. You will be given the
opportunity to save your documents.
Close Sticker
Clears the current sticker you are working on. Works the same as New Sticker.
Save Sticker Page
Saves a complete page of Stickers, including any text, stamps, or graphics you may have
added as a .spg extension file.
Save Sticker
Saves an individual sticker, including any text, stamps, or graphics you may have added
as a .stk extension file. This is useful when you want to use that design on different
sticker pages.
Save Sticker Page As...
Saves a Sticker Page under a different name. Use this command when you have made alterations
to a document and want to save it as a New page, without erasing the old one. Save As...
will bring up the Save dialog and prompt you for a new document name.
Save Sticker As...
Saves the current sticker under a different name. Works the same as Save Sticker Page As...
Import Art
Brings you to an Open dialog so that you can import other images including photos or logos
in the .BMP, .WMF, .TIF, .EPS, .JPG, .JIF, .TGA, .PCX, .WPG and .PCT format. Select the
file you want to import, press OK, and it will appear in the left corner of your current
workspace. You can then resize and move the image just as you would a stamp graphic or
text box.
Address Book
Accesses the address database which stores commonly used names and addresses in lists.
Refer to the section on the Address Book for detailed information on all Address Book features.
Print
Prints your current sticker page. You can print with just one, several, or all Stickers on
the page filled in. To quickly print a sticker page, select Print from the menu and press OK.
Note: you should print on a plain sheet of paper before you print on sticker stock to test how
the printer registers the image. Because every printer may feed paper differently and may have
different printable areas, you may need to make adjustments to the printer setting. You make
the appropriate adjustments within the Print dialog. For complete instructions, see the
section on Printing Issues.
Print Setup
Use this screen to choose and configure a specific printer. Sticker Store is designed to
print in the portrait orientation on a standard 8-1/2" x 11" page. Refer to your printer
documentation for an explanation of the available options.
Recently Opened Documents
Up to four of your most recently saved documents may appear between the Print Setup and Exit
menu items. This allows you to instantly retrieve these documents merely by selecting the
document listing in the menu. These four items will change as you use Sticker Store; it
always displays the four most recently saved documents, in the order that they were saved.
Exit
Exits the Sticker Store application and returns you to the MicrosoftTM Windows environment.
If you have any documents that are open and have not yet been saved, you will be prompted
to save them before quitting.
Edit Menu
Undo
Reverses the last action that you took. For example, if you clicked on a stamp and
didn't mean to add it to your sticker, you can simply go to Undo and it will be cleared.
If a text box is selected, and you just typed some text that you decide you don't want,
Undo will delete it. If you deleted something you didn't mean to, Undo will restore it.
Sticker Store supports one "level" of Undo, so only the most recent action you took can
be corrected.
Cut
If a text box is selected, the Cut option in the Edit Menu lets you "cut out" selected
text and place it on the clipboard. You can use "cut" when you want to move text from
one part of your document to another. You can also use Cut to take text to another Sticker
Store document, as well as to other Windows applications.
Copy
If a text box is selected, the Copy option allows you to "copy" the text that you select
to the clipboard. The text in your document will remain untouched, but now you can place
the copy of that text anywhere else in your current sticker, in another Sticker Store
document, or even in other Windows applications.
Paste
Functions only when you're in a text edit box. "Pastes" the text that is currently in the
clipboard (as a result of a Copy or Cut operation, either in Sticker Store or another Windows
application) and puts it in the currently selected text box.
Clear
When a stamp or text is selected, "clear" acts just like the delete key. Note that when you
perform a Clear operation, the text or stamp is not placed on the clipboard. The only way to
retrieve it is to perform an immediate "undo" operation.
The Insert Menu
Single Address
When the cursor is inside a text box, you can choose to insert a Single Address that you have
previously saved in the address book. Select the address you want from the drop down menu at
the top of the dialog and press OK. If you want to alter the way the address appears, click
on and off the check-boxes in the middle of dialog, and see how it affects the address in
the preview at the bottom.
Mail Merge
Use mail merge to print out multiple addresses from your Address Book database. This feature
is excellent for printing Stickers for group mailings- such as announcements, newsletters,
party invitations or Christmas cards. Mail merge functions only when in a text box. As you
click the check boxes on and off, you will see the merge codes appear in the Address Preview
box at the bottom just as they will appear in your document. These codes will be replaced with
actual Address Book records after you create and select a mailing list and print your
document. A sticker will be printed out for each person on the mailing list.
Individual Mail Merge Codes
Use individual mail merge codes when you want to merge specific fields from address book
records. Say for example that you'd like to send out an announcement to 20 of your friends,
and that you'd like to personalize each one with the receiver's first name. To do so, simply
place the cursor where you'd like to insert the code, go to Individual Mail Merge Codes, and
select First Name. The code will appear in your document, and after you have selected a
mailing list and go to print, the first name of each of the 20 different people on your list
will be inserted.
Selected Addresses
This is the dialog which lets you choose which address book records you'd like to use when
using mail merge. First, insert your mail merge codes; then go to Insert>Selected Addresses.
The left hand side lists all of the records you have saved in your address book; click on
each of the names that you would like to include in your mailing. A ">" will appear next
to the records that will be included. Use the Select All or Clear All buttons at the top of
the screen to aid you. Press OK. You can also select a whole mailing list. The mailing lists
that you have created will be listed on the right hand side of the dialog. Just highlight the
one you want and press OK. You will then be returned to your sticker, ready to print.
View Menu
Tool Bar
This check item lets you turn the Tool Bar on and off. Unless you really need the space in
your window, you should leave the Tool Bar on at all times since it provides important
information and shortcut functions.
Stamp Bar
This check item lets you turn the Stamp Bar on and off. If you're not going to be adding
additional graphics to your stamp or sticker, and screen "real estate" is important to you,
turn off the Stamp Bar using this option. Be sure to turn it back on when you want to add
stamps to your creations.
Sticker Bar
This check item allows you to turn the Sticker Bar on and off. If you're not using
preformatted designs, you can turn the Sticker Bar off.
Status Bar
This check item allows you to turn the Status Bar on and off. The Status Bar displays one-line
help sentences at the bottom of the screen.
Window Menu
Cascade
This option allows you to "cascade" your open windows within Sticker Store so that they overlap
each other. For example, if you have a sticker page open and you open up the Address Book, the
Address Book window will be displayed on top of the sticker workspace.
Tile Vertical
This option allows you to "tile" your open windows in Sticker Store so that they are displayed
side by side. Note that "tiling" shrinks the current workspace.
Tile Horizontal
This option allows you to "tile" your open windows in Sticker Store so that they are displayed
on top of each other. This can be useful while working on a sticker and editing your address
book at the same time; however, this will result in a much smaller Sticker Store window.
List of Open Windows
Below the "Tile" option is a list of your currently open windows. Sticker Store only supports a
single sticker page open at one time, so the maximum number of windows you could ever have
open is two- one for your sticker page, and one for your Address Book.
Help Menu
Index
This is the main entry to the Help system. Index brings up the Help window and takes you to the
opening table of contents. Use this option to explore Sticker Store's Help file.
Using Help
This option brings up the Windows guide to How to Use Help. If you are new to Windows-based
help files, this introduction will provide you with a comprehensive tour of the basics.
About Sticker Store
This dialog gives you some brief information about this innovative, useful product!
The Tool Bar
Sticker Store's Tool Bar provides you with some shortcuts for frequently used options, as
well as controls for changing font, background color and font color, font size, font style,
and text justification. Microsoft's Tool TipsTM have been incorporated so that when you pass
the cursor over an item on the Tool Bar, a box appears that tells you what that item is.
1. Short cut for selecting File> New Sticker Page from the main menu.
2. Short cut for selecting Save Sticker Page from the File menu.
3. Short cut for printing your current sticker page.
4. Brings up a New Sticker. Short cut for selecting File> New Sticker.
5. Saves the current sticker. Short cut for selecting File> Save Sticker.
6. When no text box is selected, this allows you to select a background color for
your sticker. When a text box is selected, this drop-down menu
serves as a font color palette.
7. Allows you to select the font you desire for the currently
selected text box. Sticker Store utilizes Windows
TrueTypeTM fonts, so the fonts you have on your system will be
listed as they actually appear.
8. Allows you to select the font size for the currently selected text box.
Click on the down arrow, then click on the desired size. You can
also type in a size font that is not on the list, then click on the down
arrow to close the drop down menu. That custom size will now be
added to the list of available font sizes.
9. Changes the font style to bold for the currently selected text box.
10. Changes the font style to italic for the currently selected text box.
11. Changes the font style to underlined for the currently selected text box.
12. Left-justifies all of the text in the currently selected text box.
13. Center-justifies all of the text in the currently selected text box.
14. Right-justifies all of the text in the currently selected text box.
Note: Sticker Store supports only one font, size, color, style and justification per text box.
Sticker Bar
The Sticker Bar is located across the bottom of the screen and is where you will find
preformatted sticker designs. To select a design, single click on your choice and it will
appear in the current workspace on the top right half of the screen. Notice the category
name listed above the four selection boxes. You can utilize the arrow keys found on either
side of the Stamp Bar to scroll through other categories. The categories may differ by
sticker or sticker size.
Sticker Navigator
Directly under the Sticker Bar are alphabetical buttons going across the bottom of the screen.
Use these buttons to help navigate through the many different categories of preformatted
sticker designs. For example, pressing the letter "S" will bring up the first category of
preformatted Stickers starting with the letter "S". If there are not categories beginning
with the selected letter, the last category of the previous letter will be displayed.
Notice that the letter you select will be highlighted in red. When using the arrow keys to
scroll through Stickers on the Sticker Bar, the button corresponding to the category you are
looking at will also be highlighted in red to help you keep track of where your favorite
sticker categories are located.
Stamp Bar
Sticker Store features hundreds of original clip art "stamp" graphics that can be added to
preformatted designs or can be used when designing your own sticker from scratch. The Stamp
Bar is located on the right hand side of the screen and runs vertically down the screen. It
contains stamp graphics that can be added to either a pre-formatted sticker design or a blank
template. The category names are listed between the workspace and the Stamp Bar. Use the
arrow keys on either end to view additional stamp categories. To add a stamp from the bar
to your sticker, click on it. The image will appear in the top left hand corner of your
current sticker. You can then resize and reposition it. (For additional details, please see
the section on Adding Stamp Graphics.)
The Stamp Bar also contains the "A" tool - located at the bottom directly above the downward
arrow. This tool allows you to add text boxes for entering personalized text for your
Stickers. Simply click on the "A" in the Stamp Bar, and the blue-dotted line box will appear
in the top left-hand corner of the current sticker. You can then resize and reposition it.
See the section on Adding Text.
You can turn the Stamp Bar off by unchecking it from the View menu. Check Stamp Bar again
to bring it back up.
Stamp Navigator
The Stamp Navigator, located just to the right of the Stamp Bar, offers a quick way to zip
to different stamp categories. By pressing one of the alphabet letters, you call up the first
category of stamps that begin with that letter. The letter you select will turn red to help
you keep your place. Notice that when using the arrow keys on either end of the Stamp Bar,
the letter on the Stamp Navigator that corresponds to the category you have displayed will
be highlighted in red.
Status Bar
The Status Bar gives you constant single-line help information as you move through the
program. It can be very helpful to look at the Status Bar if you are unsure as to exactly
what function a particular menu item performs.
You can turn off the Status Bar by unchecking Status Bar from the View menu. Check the
item again to bring it back up.
Chapter 7: Troubleshooting
Q: My printout is faded and fuzzy looking. What's wrong?
A: Some color printers require a special type of coated paper in order to print their colors
properly. Set your printer to the highest resolution, and try using different paper. Select
the appropriate paper setting in the Print Options dialog.
Q: The colors on my printouts don't look the way they do on the screen. How can I correct this?
A: There are two things you can try:
1. Clean the print heads on your computer, and make sure all of your ink
cartridges have ink in them.
2. Go into Print Setup from the Print Dialog, select Options, and under Print
Color (using the drop down menu) select Screen Matched Color.
Q: Some stamps or parts of the graphics background print out black. What can I do to fix this?
A: If you are using a color inkjet printer, you should consult your printer manual. If you are
using a Canon Bubblejet printer, you should make sure that you set it to Diffusion under the
Halftone area in the Print Options dialog. Your printouts may take a little longer to print,
but you'll get much smoother color gradients.
Q: I want to edit my address book, but I can't find the Address Menu. Where is it?
A: You have to be in the Address Book to access the Address Menu. Choose Address Book from the
File menu. You also cannot access the address book when running directly off the CD-ROM.
