  25. finally entered their second beta, after a gestation of some two months.
  26. Details and links are given below. Thanks to technical improvements,
  27. and new data support, these maps will be updated regularly from now on.

  33. Microsoft Access and php scripts to ArcGis and Arc2Earth (see
  34. acknowledgements), to allow easier updating.</font></li>

  36. "Gridded Density of Poultry Worldwide"  that can be plugged in
  37. to the base maps </font></li>

  422. <b>Mapping avian flu around the globe</b><br>

  424. <p><font face="Arial">I used Google Earth to map over time each of the 1800 or 
  425. so outbreaks of avian flu in birds that have been reported over the past two 
  426. years. The maps also shows all confirmed human cases of infection with the H5N1 
  427. influenza virus in the same period. Positions are only accurate to the 
  428. "district" administrative level.<br>
  429. <br>
  430. Much of the historical animal data was compiled from information held by the 
  431. FAO, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and various government 
  432. sources, and was generously provided to Nature by the UN Food and Agricultural 
  433. Organization (FAO) Emergency Prevention System (EMPRES) for Transboundary Animal 
  434. and Plant Pests and Diseases. This has been complemented by information taken 
  435. directly from weekly OIE reports.</font></p>
  436. <p><font face="Arial">I compiled the data on human cases from World Health 
  437. Organization bulletins, and scientific papers. Detailed spatial data was not yet 
  438. available for all cases. These will be corrected as better data becomes 
  439. available.</font></p>
  440. <p><font face="Arial">Mapping the FAO data posed several challenges. The biggest 
  441. was that the original datasets contained no latitude and longitude data for the 
  442. outbreaks, so it was impossible to map them directly. FAO uses a UN system for 
  443. defining geographical units such as place names, provinces and districts that 
  444. can only shared internally within UN agencies, and so it was not available. 
  445. Latitude and longitude data therefore had to be calculated for every outbreak 
  446. location. </font></p>
  447. <p><font face="Arial">The data was structured into two databases, one for animal 
  448. data and one for health data. This was the imported into ArcGis, ans structured 
  449. in layers based on attributes. The final maps were exported using Arc2Earth.
  450. </font></p>
  451. <p><font face="Arial">The map is a "beta" and although the data has been 
  452. manually checked, errors, in particular  in the positions of some locations 
  453. cannot be excluded. The underlying animal data itself also suffers from 
  454. underreporting of outbreaks, and omissions or inaccuracies in reporting. The FAO 
  455. also notes with respect to its own data, "facts and figures are to the best of 
  456. our knowledge accurate and up to date," and that "FAO assumes no responsibility 
  457. for any error or omission in the datasets".. <br>
