- -----------------------------------------------------------------
- In the process of editing a small book with many contributions from
- amateur writers, my wife has discovered that there are lots
- housewives who use PCs occasionally but don't realize that a
- processor can save a document on disk. For them, the computer is
- just a
- typewriter.
- The funniest dialogue went like this:
- My wife: "What software do you use?"
- Writer:
- "I don't know, it's my husband's computer..." (asks him)
- ..."Word Perfect."
- My wife: "That's great. Can you send your article to me on disk?"
- Writer:
- "I don't know if our computer does that. What do you mean?"
- My wife: "It's easy. When you type the article in, save it on a disk
- and send it to me. That way I won't have to type it again."
- Writer (to husband): "Can we save my article on a disk? That way I
- won't have to type it."

- Software Piracy and BBS's.
- After a year of work, the FBI busted some

- ------------------------------------------------------------------
- The Netware Virus is blamed on the Jerusalem-B variety, a real famous
- virus.
- Changes the read/write flag and starts making files to start
- growing and occupying space in the memory of your local machine.
- can search files for particular ASCII strings.
- sUMsDos.
- This string
- will tip you off if you have the virus.
- There isn't a quick remedy.
- When you find this string, you are instructed to delete the file.
- is from "NetWare Connection" from NetWare Users International.
- Novell
- pays for this and sends this out to everyone who has a license for a

- Carl V. says he has a big problem with ALL spreadsheets.
- According to
- Carl, he and his co-workers have come across "the 3 numbers from
- Hell!"
- The #'s are 16.22, 9.22, and 7.
- Supposedly, when you have these
- #'s in a spreadsheet, and subtract them from one another, you should
- come out with zero.
- It doesn't.
- Carl has tried this on all versions
- of Lotus, 1-2-3 G, Excel for Windows, and Quatro Pro.
- All come up with
- different answers.
- Carl says that Quatro Pro comes up with the
- closest to the correct answer (0 with brackets).
- Carl states that a friend of his took a Beta Test class in Boston,
- and they worked on this problem for an hour, and came up with no
- solution.
- Carl called Lotus' Regional Office and said "they tried to
- joke off the problem" and were not serious about it at all.
- offered no explanation, no tips, and "didn't even shoot ducks out of the
- air."

- Terry B. sees "gaping hole" for viruses in the new MS DOS 5
- involving
- the SETVER.EXE file.
- Says that since the file is a self
- modifying
- executable file, contains both the data and the program, and that it
- changes occosionally....the anti-virus software you use will always
- report changes. The user would tend to ignore these messages
- (knowing that the file tends to change) leaving an open field for
- viruses. He has not tried to test it yet...

- One of the PC users at the Ill. State Water Commission had
