- DC1 - DOCUMENTATION
-
- McAfee Consumer Products Division provides each
- its products with an extensive set of
- documentation, consisting usually of one or
- more product guides saved in Adobe Acrobat
- Portable Document Format (.PDF), and an online
- help system, whose form can vary, depending on
- the platform on which the product runs.
-
- - Acrobat .PDF files are flexible online
- documents that contain hyperlinks, outlines,
- and other aids for easy navigation and
- information retrieval. You can also install
- an Acrobat plug-in file that allows you to
- read .PDF documents from within your web
- browser while online. Copies of the product
- documentation come with the product CD-ROM.
- A copy of the free Acrobat Reader also comes
- with the product CD-ROM or is available from
- the Adobe web site at:
-
- Most McAfee Consumer products can include a
- documentation set drawn from these components:
-
- NOTE: Not all products will include all
- listed documents. Consult the
- User's Guide or Administrator's
- Guide that comes with your product
- for a complete list.
-
- - A printed Product Guide, which introduces
- the product, provides installation
- instructions, outlines product features, and
- provides a brief overview. In many cases, an
- electronic version of this guide will also
- be available on the product CD-ROM or from
- McAfee Consumer Products Division FTP site
- in Adobe Acrobat .PDF format.
-
- - A User's Guide saved on the product CD-ROM
- or installed on your hard disk in Adobe
- Acrobat .PDF format. McAfee Consumer
- Products Division User's Guides document all
- product functions extensively, and discuss
- how best to use your McAfee software product
- to accomplish your tasks.
-
- - Specialized guides. These can include
- reference guides, deployment guides,
- configuration guides, vulnerability guides
- for intrusion detection software, and other
- product-specific documentation.
-
- - An online help system. Online help gives you
- quick access to hints and tips about how to
- use your McAfee software. The format of the
- online help system for the product will
- vary; depending on which platform or
- operating system, you use to run your McAfee
- product. In most cases, the software will
- display a Help menu item or link that you
- can use to start the system.
-
- - Some products might also include
- context-sensitive online help. Right-click
- buttons, lists, or other elements within
- dialog boxes to see brief, descriptive help
- topics.
-
- - A LICENSE.TXT file. This file outlines the
- terms of your license to use your Networks
- Associates product. Read it carefully. If
- you install a McAfee Consumer Products
- Division product, you agree to the license
- terms.

- IN1 - INSTALLATION
-
- To install McAfee QuickClean:
-
- - (1) If your computer runs Windows NT
- Workstation v4.0, Windows 2000 Professional,
- or Windows XP, log on to your system as a
- user with administrative rights. You must
- have administrative rights to install this
- software on your system.
- - (2) Insert the McAfee QuickClean CD into
- your computer's CD-ROM drive. If the Autorun
- installation menu does not automatically
- display, go to Step 3. Otherwise, skip to
- Step 4.
- - (3) Use the following procedure if the
- Autorun installation menu does not display,
- or, if you obtained your software via
- download at a McAfee web site.
- - From the Windows Start menu, select
- Run. The Run dialog box displays.
- - Type <X>:\SETUP.EXE in the Run dialog
- text box, and click OK. Here, <X>
- represents the drive letter for your
- CD-ROM drive or the path to the folder
- that contains your extracted
- QuickClean files. To search for the
- correct files on your hard disk or
- CD-ROM, click Browse.
- - (4) Before proceeding with the installation,
- Setup first checks to see whether your
- computer is already running the Microsoft
- Windows Installer (MSI) utility running as
- part of your system software.
- - If your computer runs Windows XP,
- Windows Me, or Windows 2000, MSI
- already exists on your system. If your
- computer runs an earlier Windows
- release, you may still have MSI in
- your computer if you previously
- installed other software that uses
- MSI. In either of these cases, Setup
- will display its first wizard panel
- immediately. Skip to Step 5 to
- continue.
- - If Setup does not find MSI or an
- earlier version of MSI is installed in
- your computer, it installs files
- necessary to continue the
- installation, then prompts you to
- restart your computer. Click Restart
- System. When your computer restarts,
- Setup will continue from where it left
- off.
- - (5) Refer to the steps displayed on the
- Installation Wizard to complete your
- installation.
- __________________
- KN1 - KNOWN ISSUES
-
- - Previous version settings not retained.
-
- If you are upgrading to McAfee QuickClean
- 3.0 from an older version of this product
- (2.0 or older), the Setup program does not
- retain the settings from your previous
- versionÆs installation. After Setup installs
- McAfee QuickClean 3.0, you will need to (for
- example):
-
- - Rebuild the Smartlinks Database
- - Configure storage locations and
- exclusion timeframes for archives that
- you create.
- - Configure QuickCleanÆs wizard settings
- (e.g., Application Remnant Cleaner,
- SpaceMaker, QuickClean Lite, and
- Shredder settings).
-
- - We therefore recommend that if you want to
- customize your QuickClean settings to suit
- your needs that you do so at your earliest
- convenience.
-
- - If you install McAfee QuickClean 3.0 and
- then install an older version of any McAfee
- product, uninstalling McAfee QuickClean 3.0
- may corrupt and render the older McAfee
- product ineffective. The older McAfee
- products affected are as follows:
- - McAfee Firewall 3.x and older
- - McAfee Internet Security 4.x and
- older
- - Internet Guard Dog 3.0 and older
- - McAfee VirusScan 6.x and older
- - McAfee VirusScan Professional 6.x and
- older
- - McAfee Uninstaller 6.5 and older
-
- To remedy this problem:
- 1. Uninstall the older McAfee product.
- 2. Restart your computer.
- 3. Reinstall the older McAfee product.
-
- - If you use "Archive" to archive a program
- whose startup setting is to load at startup,
- you will always receive a prompt asking you
- to "Restore" the archived program. Programs
- that load at startup usually display icons
- in the windows system tray (for example
- Realplayer and Realdownload).
-
- There is no solution to this problem at this
- time; the Archive wizard is not able to
- remove registry values for programs that
- load at startup.
-
- - QuickClean's Browser Cookie Cleaner does not
- support the removal of Netscape 6.x
- cookies.
-
- - QuickClean's Browser Cache Cleaner does
- support the removal of Netscape 6.x Internet
- cache.
-
- - Important Information Regarding Windows XP
- Migration: Upgrading your computer's
- operating system from any version of Windows
- to Windows XP causes all McAfee products
- installed before migration to become
- disabled after migration to Windows XP. You
- will be made aware of this issue as you make
- your first attempt to start a McAfee product
- (after migration) - you will be instructed
- to reinstall the product. Therefore, you
- will need to uninstall all McAfee products
- and reinstall using your installation CD or
- the software obtained from McAfee via
- download.
-
- - To remove this program from your computer;
- to repair your installation; or to change
- its installation configuration, you must log
- in to your computer with a user-id that has
- administrative rights if your computer's
- operating system is Windows NT, Windows 2000
- Professional, or Windows XP [Home or
- Professional].
-
- - Windows XP installation issues: When you
- install a program on your Microsoft Windows
- XP-based computer, you may receive an error
- message similar to the following: Error
- 1606. Could not access network location
- <Common Administrative Tools>.All users\.
- This behavior can occur if there is an
- incorrect setting in the following registry
- entry:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsCurrentVersion\Explorer\User
- Shell Folders\Common Administrative Tools
-
- Use these steps to resolve this behavior:
-
- Caution: Incorrectly editing the registry
- may severely damage your system.
- Before making changes to the
- registry, you should back up any
- valued data on your computer.
- Before you edit the registry, make
- sure you understand how to restore
- it if a problem occurs. For
- information about how to do this,
- view the "Restoring the Registry"
- Help topic in Regedit.exe or the
- "Restoring a Registry Key" Help
- topic in Regedt32.exe.
- - (1) Click Start, and click Run.
- - (2) In the Open box, type regedit, and
- click OK.
- - (3) Locate and click (highlight) the
- following registry key:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
- Shell Folders
- - (4) In the right pane of the Registry
- Editor window, double-click Common
- Administrative Tools.
- - (5) In the Value data box of the Edit
- String dialog box that displays, type the
- following line, and then click OK:
- %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start
- Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools
- - (6) On the File menu, click Exit to quit
- Registry Editor.
- - (7) Restart the computer.
-
- - Changing the color depth or color palette of
- your monitor's Display Settings to a
- 256-color mode while McAfee QuickClean is
- running may cause the text on any QuickClean
- window to be difficult to read. If this
- situation occurs, close McAfee QuickClean by
- clicking the Windows close button [X].
- Restart McAfee QuickClean.
-
- - If the text displayed on the Autorun image
- is illegible; or appears in an
- unrecognizable font, then there may be too
- many fonts installed in your computer.
-
- NOTE: The Autorun image presents you with an
- on-screen installation menu after you insert
- the McAfee installation CD into your
- computerÆs CD-ROM drive.
-
- To install this product: From the Windows
- desktop, right-click My Computer and select
- Browse. Locate the following program file:
- <x>:\qcl\setup.exe. Here X represents the
- drive letter of your computer's CD-ROM
- drive. Double-click setup.exe to install
- McAfee QuickClean. Refer to the steps
- displayed on the Installation Wizard to
- complete your installation.
-
- - Insufficient Drive Space messages: Free
- drive space, in addition to the amount
- described under "System Requirements - MB of
- hard disk space", must be available to run
- Setup and install your McAfee product. The
- amount of additional space depends upon your
- computer's Operating System and its
- configuration. If, during setup, you receive
- an "insufficient drive space" message, exit
- setup and remove unnecessary files from your
- computer. Re-start Setup. Perform these
- steps as necessary until you do not receive
- an insufficient drive space message.
-
- - Scenario: An attempt to update a McAfee
- product using Instant Updater returns the
- following error message:
-
- "Instant Updater was unable to communicate
- with the server. Please try again later.
- (-202)." This message displays in response
- to one of the following events:
-
- - The McAfee server is busy or not
- available.
- Solution: Try again later.
- - Instant Updater was unable to
- communicate with the server due to no
- Internet connection.
- Solution: Verify your computer
- maintains an Internet connection. If
- you are not connected, reconnect and
- try again.
-
- - Instant Updater is unable to determine the
- actions performed by the user after
- downloading a product upgrade. Product
- upgrades consist of patches and bug fixes,
- etc; and do not include incremental DATs
- (virus definition files). The upgrade
- process runs using a program that applies an
- upgrade independently of McAfee's Instant
- Updater tool. As such, Instant Updater's
- summary screen displays the same result:
- "successful" message, regardless of whether
- the user completes the upgrade process or
- not.
-
- - Instant Updater not properly installed.
-
- If the following error message displays:
- Error -103 (Instant Updater is not properly
- installed), please download and install
- Microsoft's updated XML parser.
- You can find the MSXML Parser 3.0 Service
- Pack 2 Release update at the following
- location (you can copy and paste this URL
- into the address bar of your Internet
- browser):
- If you continue to receive -103 errors after
- applying this Microsoft patch, the update
- may not have registered a file correctly.
- Therefore, please try the following:
- (1) From the Windows task bar, select Start
- > Run (The Run dialog displays).
-
- (2) In the Run dialog type the following:
- regsvr32 "%SystemRoot%\System32\msxml3.dll"
-
- NOTE: %SystemRoot% is a variable that refers
- to the default Windows\system directory.
- Windows 98/ME - Substitute c:\windows\system
- for '%SystemRoot%/System32'
-
- (3) Click OK.
-
- You should receive a message that the
- DllRegisterServer succeeded. If you continue
- to receive -103 errors, please contact
- technical support.
-
- - The Instant Updater progress indicators do
- not display progress details after
- downloading updates.
-
- Although it appears that Instant Updater has
- stopped responding, please be patient and
- allow Instant Updater to complete the
- Applying product upgrade task.
-
- - AOL stops responding after updating.
-
- After you update this product, Instant
- Updater may prompt you to restart your
- computer. If you click "Yes" to restart your
- computer now and your computerÆs default
- browser is AOL, you may experience
- situations where your computer does not shut
- down. If you experience this situation,
- simply restart your computer to apply the
- updates.
-
- - Instant UpdaterÆs Update Summary displays
- blank details.
-
- If your computer is attempting to connect to
- the Internet (in dialup mode) and you
- terminate the Update task by canceling the
- dialup attempt, the Instant Updater summary
- screen displays blank information.
-
- - Instant Updater returns the "Pick a Task"
- screen when attempting to update your
- product.
-
- This occurs when your connection type is not
- dial-up (e.g., DSL, cable modem) and Instant
- Updater is attempting to connect to the
- Internet but is unable to do so.
- Additionally, Instant Updater does not
- inform you that your computer does have a
- live Internet connection while updating.
-
- If you choose to manually update this
- product, and Instant Updater responds in
- this manner, you will need to [first]
- establish your Internet connection before
- checking for updates.
-
- - Scenario:
- An attempt to update a McAfee product using
- Instant Updater returns the following error
- message:
- "Instant Updater was unable to communicate
- with the server. Please try again later.
- (-202)."
- This message displays in response to one of
- the following events:
- - The McAfee server is busy or not
- available:
- Solution: Try again later.
- - Instant Updater was unable to
- communicate with the server due to no
- Internet connection.
- Solution: Verify your computer
- maintains an Internet connection. If
- you are not connected, reconnect and
- try again.
-
- - Online Help for McAfee Shredder refers to
- features no longer supported by McAfee
- Shredder
-
- McAfee Shredder no longer supports the
- following options described under the "How
- to Configure McAfee Shredder" topic.
- 1. Show icon on desktop
- 2. Add to "Send to" menu
-
- - McAfee Shredder, is not able to shred folder
- entries if your computer's operating system
- is Windows XP Windows 2000, or Windows NT.
-
- - McAfee Shredder does not support the ability
- to "Erase free space" or "Erase an entire
- disk" if your computer's operating system is
- Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP.
