  33. <p>This will tell you how to add, remove, and rearrange toolbars in
  34.   &brandFullName;.</p>
  35.  
  36. <p>Yes, you can customize the toolbars in &brandShortName;.  For those who are
  37.   unfamiliar with the terminology, a toolbar is the (usually gray) box above
  38.   the area that the web site is displayed.  The toolbar contains by default
  39.   the following items:</p>
  40.  
  41. <ul>
  42.   <li><strong>Menu Bar</strong>: This is the toolbar that contains the browser
  43.     menus (File, Edit, Help, etc.).</li>
  44.   <li><strong>Navigation Bar</strong>: This is the toolbar that contains the
  45.     Location bar and the buttons used to navigate web sites.</li>
  46.   <li><strong>Bookmarks Toolbar</strong>: This is the toolbar that contains
  47.     your Bookmarks Toolbar Folder bookmarks.</li>

  51. <h2 id="how_do_i_customize_the_toolbars">How Do I Customize the Toolbars?</h2>

  53. <p>There are two basic methods of customizing the toolbars in
  54.   &brandShortName;:</p>
  55.

  62. <h3 id="adding_removing_toolbars">Adding/Removing Toolbars</h3>

  64. <p>You can take away certain toolbars if you do not wish to keep them on your
  65.   screen. Currently, these toolbars can be removed:</p>
  66. <ul>
  67.   <li>Navigation Toolbar</li>
  68.   <li>Bookmarks Toolbar</li>
  69. </ul>
  70. <p>You cannot currently remove the Menu Bar because you cannot move the menu
  71.   items (File, Edit, Help, etc.) to a different toolbar, and they must stay on
  72.   the screen at all times.</p>
  73.  
  74. <p>To remove a toolbar, look in the View menu on your Menu Bar.  Select <span
  75.   class="menuPath">View > Toolbars</span>.  You should see a few menu items.
  76.   The top ones (above the separator) are the toolbars you may show.  Toolbars
  77.   currently shown are checked, and toolbars currently hidden are not checked.
  78.   To show or hide a toolbar, simply click its menu item. The toolbar will now
  79.   be shown or hidden based on your choice.</p>
  80.  
  81. <p>To add a toolbar, select <span class="menuPath">View > Toolbars >
  82.   Customize</span>. Click on <em>Add New Toolbar</em> (in the bottom of the
  83.   dialog). This should give you a dialog to enter a name.  Enter a name, click
  84.   <em>OK</em>, and then click <em>Done</em>. Now select the <span
  85.   class="menuPath">View > Toolbars</span> menu, and you should see your new
  86.   toolbar listed. Follow the procedures in the previous section to show or hide
  87.   it.</p>

  89. <h3 id="rearranging_toolbar_items">Rearranging Toolbar Items</h3>
  90.  
  91. <p>To rearrange the items (icons, buttons, text boxes, etc.) on your toolbar,
  92.   <span class="noMac">right-click</span><span class="mac">press &ctrlKey; and
  93.   click</span> on any part of the toolbar that is not a text box. This will
  94.   bring up the toolbar customization dialog.</p>
  95.  
  96. <p>Drag and drop any items you want to and from the toolbars (excluding the
  97.   menu items).  You can also rearrange icons already on the toolbars by
  98.   dragging and dropping them wherever you wish. When the toolbars and items are
  99.   arranged the way you want them, click <em>Done</em>.</p>

  101. <h3 id="special_toolbar_items">Special Toolbar Items</h3>
  102.  
  103. <p>There are a few special items that are available to you when customizing the
  104.   toolbar. They are as follows:</p>
  105.  
  106. <ul>
  107.   <li><strong>Separators:</strong> These allow you to separate items on the
  108.     toolbars with a small vertical line.</li>
  109.   <li><strong>Spacers:</strong> These allow you to separate items on the
  110.     toolbars with a fixed-size space, usually around 20 pixels on most
  111.     themes.</li>
  112.   <li><strong>Flexible spacers:</strong> Spacers allow you to separate items
  113.     on the toolbars with a space.  These spacers automatically resize to fill
  114.     all of the empty space on the toolbar.  These are good for positioning
  115.     items on the right of a toolbar.</li>

  119. <h2 id="themes">Themes</h2>
  120.  
  121. <p>Themes are small files that are installed in &brandShortName; that change
  122.   the look and feel of &brandShortName;. Themes are not allowed to modify the
  123.   actions or functionality of &brandShortName;, only the look.</p>
  124.  
  125. <h3 id="getting_installing_themes">Getting and Installing Themes</h3>
  126.  
  127. <p>You can download and install many themes from <a
  128.   href="https://addons.mozilla.org/themes/" target="_blank">Mozilla Update</a>.
  129.   Internet searches will find many other themes as well.</p>
  130.  
  131. <p>Usually when you click on a link to install a theme, &brandShortName;
  132.   displays a dialog asking you for permission to install the theme.  You can
  133.   choose to allow the download and installation or to cancel the process.</p>

  135. <h3 id="uninstalling_themes">Uninstalling Themes</h3>
  136.  
  137. <p>Should you ever wish to remove a theme from &brandShortName;, click on <span
  138.   class="menuPath">Tools</span> from the menu bar and select the
  139.   <span class="menuPath">Themes</span> menu item.</p>

  144. <p>Once in the Themes Manager, select the theme that you wish to remove. Then,
  145.   click the Uninstall button. You may need to close and then reopen
  146.   &brandShortName; for all changes to take effect.</p>

  148. <h3 id="changing_themes">Switching Themes</h3>

  150. <p>To switch between your installed themes, select <span class="menuPath">
  151.   Tools</span> menu and click on <span class="menuPath">Themes</span>.</p>

  153. <p>Once in the Themes dialog, simply select the theme of your choice, and click
  154.   the Use Theme button. It is recommended that you close and then reopen
  155.   &brandShortName; so that the theme can be applied correctly.</p>

  157. <h3 id="updating_themes">Updating Themes</h3>

  159. <p>Whenever you would like to check for a newer version of a theme that you
  160.   have installed, you will need to access &brandShortName;'s <span
  161.   class="menuPath">Tools</span> menu, then select the <span class="menuPath">
  162.   Themes</span> menu item.</p>

  164. <p>Simply select the theme that you wish to update, and then click the
  165.   <em>Update</em> button.</p>

  167. <h2 id="extensions">Extensions</h2>

  169. <p>Extensions are small add-ons to &brandShortName; that change existing
  170.   browser functionality or add new functionality.</p>

  172. <h3 id="getting_installing_extensions">Getting and Installing Extensions</h3>

  174. <p>Installing an extension involves a very similar process to installing
  175.   themes. Extensions can be found at <a target="blank"
  176.   href="https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/">Mozilla Update</a>.</p>

  178. <p>There should be an install link for each extension on that extension's
  179.   page. As long as JavaScript is not disabled in your browser, clicking this
  180.   link will install the extension for you.</p>
