113. According to Peter Mattis and Spencer Kimball, the original creators of
114. GIMP, in their announcement of GIMP

116.

117.

118. The GIMP arose from the ashes of a hideously
119. crafted CS164 (compilers)
120. class project. The setting: early morning. We were both weary from lack
121. of sleep and the terrible strain of programming a compiler in
122. LISP. The limits of our patience had long been
123. exceeded, and yet still the dam held.
124.

125.

126. And then it happened. Common LISP
127. messily dumped core when it could not allocate the 17 MB it needed to
128. generate a parser for a simple grammar using yacc.
129. An unbelieving moment passed, there was one shared look of disgust,
130. and then our project was vapor. We had to write something...
131. ANYTHING ... useful. Something in
132. C. Something that did not rely on nested lists to
133. represent a bitmap. Thus, the GIMP was born.
134.

135.

136. Like the phoenix, glorious, new life sprung out of the burnt remnants of
137. LISP and yacc. Ideas went
138. flying, decisions were made, the
139. GIMP began to take form.
140.

141.

142. An image manipulation program was the consensus. A program that would at
143. the very least lessen the necessity of using commercial software under
144. “Windoze” or on the “Macintoy”. A program

147. that would help maintain the long tradition of excellent and free
148. UNIX applications.
149.

150.

151. Six months later, we've reached an early beta stage. We want to release
152. now to start working on compatibility issues and cross-platform
153. stability. Also, we feel now that the program is actually usable and
154. would like to see other interested programmers developing plug-ins and
