-
- Welcome to the Trial Size version of ACT! 4. You can use
- ACT! Trial Size for as long as you want; ACT! Trial Size does
- not have an expiration date. ACT! Trial Size is identical to the
- full retail version of the product with the following exceptions:
- * Do not create more than 25 contact records using ACT! Trial
- Size. ACT! Trial Size will not open a database with more
- than 25 contacts. The full retail version of ACT! allows you to
- create a virtually unlimited number of contacts and you can
- import contacts you create with the Trial Size version into a
- database created with the full retail version of ACT!
-
- * You can send faxes from within ACT! using WinFax; however, you
- cannot use an ACT! database as a WinFax phonebook, automatically
- log Winfax events in Notes/History, or automatically create an
- activity reminder to resend failed faxes. In the full retail
- version of ACT!, these features are available in the WinFax
- Options preferences.
-
- * You cannot convert an ACT! 3.0 or 2.0 database to ACT! 4.0, or
- an ACT! 4.0 database to ACT! 3.0 using the ACT! Trial Size.
-
- * You cannot use LiveUpdate in ACT! Trial Size.
-
- * Linking with handheld devices (personal digital assistants)
- is not supported in ACT! Trial Size.
-

- Additional information
- ======================
- This section contains changes and additions made since the
- ACT! documentation and online help were completed.
-
- Installing ACT! on a Windows NT server
- --------------------------------------
- When using ACT! 4.0 with Windows NT, ACT! should be installed and
- uninstalled by a user with Administrator privileges.
-
- Installing other applications
- -----------------------------
- During installation, some programs (such as the one that installs
- Office 97) may report an error message similar to "MFC40.DLL is
- already in use." This message appears because ACT! Speed Loader
- is running, and it uses a Microsoft DLL (MFC40.DLL). While ACT!
- Speed Loader is running, the other application's installer cannot
- update MFC40.DLL. To correct this problem, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete.
- In the Close Program dialog box, click "actldr" (at the end of
- the list) and click the End Task button. If another dialog box
- appears that also includes the End Task button, click this button,
- too to close ACT! Speed Loader.
-
- Opening an ACT! 4 database in ACT! 3
- ------------------------------------
- Do not open an ACT! 4 database with a prior version of ACT! To
- use an ACT! 4 database in ACT! 3, save the database in ACT! 3
- format. See the ACT! 4 User's Guide for more information.
-
- Viewing the ViaGrafix multimedia training
- -----------------------------------------
- On some computers, part of some ViaGrafix multimedia training
- modules appear black. To fix this problem, remove and reinstall
- audio and video compression:
- 1. Click the Windows Start button and choose
- Settings > Control Panel.
- 2. In the Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- 3. Click the Windows Setup tab, select Multimedia, and click
- the Details button.
- 4. Select the Audio Compression and Video Compression options and
- click OK.
- 5. Click the Apply button.
- 6. Reinstall audio and video compression by repeating steps 3-5.
- 7. Restart your computer.
-
- Using Lotus cc:Mail with ACT!
- -----------------------------
- If you include the Lotus cc:Mail components when you install ACT!,
- several Lotus cc:Mail files are copied to your computer. These
- files and their version numbers are listed below. If you have
- problems accessing your cc:Mail account from within ACT!, check
- the following before calling ACT! Customer Support.
- 1. Attempt to access your cc:Mail account using a supported
- cc:Mail client. If this action fails, contact your local
- cc:Mail administration for help in identifying the problem.
- 2. Contact your local cc:Mail administration to verify that the
- file versions listed below are still supported by your local
- cc:Mail post office. Updated versions of these files can be
- obtained from the cc:Mail web site at http://www.ccmail.com.
- 3. Check for other solutions in the ACT! User's Guide or online
- help.

-
- Using Eudora Pro with ACT!
- --------------------------
- If you use Eudora Pro with ACT!, it may take ACT! longer to
- display your Eudora Pro inbox. Try filing your e-mail from the
- inbox to another folder in Eudora Pro. We are working with
- Qualcomm to resolve this problem.
-
- Failing to start a word processor from within ACT!
- --------------------------------------------------
- If your networked computer name contains an @ symbol, you cannot
- start any word processor from within ACT! To correct this problem:
- 1. On the Windows desktop, right-click Network Neighborhood and
- choose Properties from the shortcut menu.
- 2. In the Identification tab, remove the @ in the computer name.
-
- Using WordPerfect with ACT!
- ---------------------------
- ACT! 4 is fully compatible with WordPerfect 7.0.2. If you use
- WordPerfect 7.0 as your default word processor in ACT!, you may
- experience problems due to the incompatibility of WordPerfect
- macros. You should upgrade to WordPerfect 7.0.2.
-
- Integration with Outlook 98
- ---------------------------
- Using the new Microsoft Outlook 98 integration in ACT! 4, you can
- share contact and calendar information via e-mail with Outlook
- users. To exchange contact and activity information, double-click
- the attachment to merge the information into an ACT! database or
- Outlook program. If you send contacts or an activity via e-mail
- from ACT! as a vCard or vCalendar attachment, Outlook users can
- read the attachment and add it to their Outlook contacts or
- calendar. Outlook users can send you contact and calendar
- information, which is automatically formatted using vCard or
- vCalendar standards, and you can add it to your ACT! database.
-
- When sending an e-mail message from within ACT!, you can attach
- your contacts to the e-mail message. To attach contacts, choose
- Attach To Message > Contact from the E-mail menu or right-click
- and choose Attach > Contact. Choose the contacts to send and the
- format to use. To send contacts to users of programs like Outlook,
- select vCard format.
-
- You can also attach an activity when you send an e-mail message.
- In a Calendar view, select the activity and choose Send Activity
- from the Contact menu or right-click and choose Send Activity.
- To send to users of programs like Outlook, select vCalendar format.
-
- If an e-mail message you receive from an Outlook user or another
- ACT! user has an attachment with a filename extension of .VCF
- (for contacts) or .VCS (for activities), double-click the
- attachment. Complete the questions in the dialog box to add the
- contacts or activity to your database.
-
- Known software and hardware compatibility problems
- --------------------------------------------------
- * Adobe Type Manager -- If an older version of Adobe Type Manager
- (ATM) is on your computer, you may have problems previewing ACT!
- printouts and reports. To avoid these problems, turn off Adobe
- Type Manager and restart Windows.
-
- * S3 video cards -- If you use an S3 video card or S3 integrated
- video, Windows may freeze when you view some ACT! dialog boxes.
- This problem has been traced to the S3 Trio 64V+ chip, but other
- S3 chips may have the same problem. Update your current S3 video
- card driver to the latest version, available on the S3 web site
- (www.S3.com). Go to the area for downloading drivers and
- utilities. As of this writing, it is
- http://www.s3.com/bbs/0main/topindex.htm. Download any driver
- with a date of, or after, August 19, 1997. Before downloading
- a driver, identify your chipset using the S3ID.EXE utility,
- which is available on the S3 web site.
-
- Using Eudora Pro with ACT!
- --------------------------
- If you use the 30-day demo of Eudora Pro, an error message may
- appear when you try to send or read e-mail in ACT! This message
- appears six days before the Eudora Pro demo expires. You cannot
- continue working until you close the message in Eudora. To close
- the message, open Eudora Pro and click OK in the message. You
- can then return to ACT! and continue using Eudora Pro. You must
- close the warning message in Eudora each time you use Eudora Pro
- with ACT! The message no longer appears if you upgrade to the
- full version of Eudora Pro.
-
- Using cc:Mail version 8.0 with ACT!
- -----------------------------------
- If you log into a cc:Mail 8.0 post office using cc:Mail 8.0 client
- software, you may not see some folders in your cc:Mail inbox. If
- you use cc:Mail version 6.0 client software, you can see these
- folders. Lotus is currently working to fix this problem and a
- solution should be available in a future release of cc:Mail 8.0.
-
- Setting up Microsoft Exchange for use with ACT!
- -----------------------------------------------
- The Microsoft Exchange panel of the E-mail Setup Wizard says "To
- set Windows Messaging settings, you must launch the program."
- However, if you already set up MS Exchange, ACT! detects your
- MS Exchange settings. You need not launch MS Exchange and specify
- settings unless you want to change the MS Exchange profile.
-
- Using Microsoft Fax with ACT!
- -----------------------------
- If you send a fax from ACT! using Microsoft Fax and receive a
- message that the modem is in use, choose Preferences from the ACT!
- Edit menu, click the Dialer tab, and turn off the "Modem has
- speaker phone capabilities" option. If you turn off this option,
- the "Lookup Contact Using Caller ID" option will not work.
-
- Using ACT! on a Novell network
- ------------------------------
- If you use a Novell network, you get the best results with the
- Minimum patches, available at http://support.novell.com. If you
- use Novell Client32, upgrade to the latest version, which is
- 2.20 at this time. Under the Advanced setting of the Client32
- properties, change the True Commit value to ON.
-
- Using long filenames on a Novell network server
- -----------------------------------------------
- If you have a database with a long filename on a Novell network
- server, you may receive a message saying the database is locked if
- you try to open it by dragging it from the server and dropping it
- on the ACT! icon on the Windows 95 desktop or in Windows Explorer.
- You may also receive this message if you saved the database in a
- folder with a long name. If you receive this message, open the
- file in ACT! This error doesn't occur if you use ACT! on Windows NT.
-
- Additional dialer information
- -----------------------------
- * Using the dialer on a notebook computer -- ACT! keeps separate
- dialer configuration settings for each Windows 95 hardware
- profile. Therefore, when you boot your computer while it is
- docked, the dialer settings that you select are in effect only
- when your computer is docked. When your computer is undocked,
- you need to configure the dialer again.
-
- * Setting dialing properties for the U.S. -- If you see an extra
- 1 in the Number to Dial field of the ACT! Dialer, open the
- Windows 95 Dialing Properties dialog box and verify that you
- did not enter a 1 in either field of the "To access an outside
- line, first dial __ for local, __ for long distance" option.
- These fields are for telephone systems that require you to dial
- a 9 or other digit to reach an outside line. Make sure that you
- selected United States of America (1) in the "I am in" field.
- This ensures that Windows 95 telephone services dial a 1 for
- long distance calls.
-
- * Using Windows 3.x telephony drivers under Windows 95 -- If you
- have a telephony (TAPI) driver that was originally designed for
- Windows 3.x, it may not install completely under Windows 95.
- The Windows 3.x driver instructions may have instructed you to
- open the Telephony icon in the control panel. Before you can do
- this in Windows 95, you must change the name of a file:
- 1. From the Windows Start menu, choose Find > Files or Folders.
- 2. Type TELEPHON.CP$ in the Named field and click Find Now.
- 3. Right-click the file name when it appears in the lower part
- of the Find dialog box.
- 4. From the shortcut menu, choose Rename.
- 5. Change the name to TELEPHON.CPL
- 6. From the File menu, choose Close.
- A Telephony icon now appears in your control panel.
-
- * Using voice modems and TAPI phones with ACT! -- The modem setup
- software that comes with voice modems and TAPI phones that use
- the Microsoft TAPI service provider (TSP) (including Phone
- Blaster) configures the Windows 95 Unimodem or Unimodem V driver
- for the modem or phone. For Caller ID to work properly, your
- Windows 95 installation must include the Unimodem V driver,
- available on the ACT! 4 CD in the SUPPORT folder. You can also
- download the Unimodem V driver from the Microsoft web site.
-
- Change in Contact Layout label colors when switching between
- applications
- ------------------------------------------------------------
- If you run ACT! and another application at the same time, field
- label colors may change in Contact Layout 4.0 when you switch
- between applications. If this problem occurs, change the Windows
- color setting to High Color or True Color or use the 16-color
- version of the default Contact Layout.
