Differences between Editions of HPC Notes HPC Notes Professional Edition: includes a module that runs on the desktop PC and synchronizes multiple notes databases with the Handheld PC. HPC Notes Standard Edition: includes the synchronization module for Microsoft Outlook 9X/2000 Notes folder. HPC Notes Lite Edition: does not have ability to synchronize data with the desktop PC. The <a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#editor">Note Editor</a> dialog box will appear. <li>To delete all notes from the Notes Database, choose the File/Database/Empty menu item. <li>To modify an existing note, double click on the note you wish to edit or select the note and choose the Edit/Edit Note menu item. The <a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#editor">Note Editor</a> dialog box will appear. <li>To delete one or more notes, select the note(s) you want to delete and choose Delete Note from the Edit menu or press Ctrl+D. <li>To find specific text within a note, choose the Edit/Find menu or press Ctrl+F. Note: this feature cannot be used if you synchronize with Microsoft Outlook, because protected notes are not supported by Outlook (HPC Notes Standard Edition only). <li>To print one or more notes, choose the File/Print menu item in the main menu. The Print dialog box will appear. Select the printing options and tap OK. You can also print the currently edited note from the Note Editor. Note: printing is not supported on Palm-Size PCs. <li>To format a note, use the Format/<a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#font1">Font</a>, Format/<a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#para">Paragraph</a>, and Format/<a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#tabs">Tabs</a> menu commands in the <a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#editor">Note Editor</a> dialog box. Note: the last two commands require pimstore.dll (not included with HPC Notes due to its size) which can be downloaded from http://www.phatware.com/pimstore.html. </ul> See Also <a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#keys">Hot keys</a>  <hr>  <a name="editor"></a><h4>Note Editor Dialog Box</h4> The Note Editor dialog box may be used to create a new note or to modify an existing note. The date and time fields always show the current date and time. To create a new note, you may select a desired style in the Type box (optional), type the subject into the Subject box (optional), and then write your Note. Tap OK. If you leave the Subject field empty, the first line of the note's body will be used as the subject. If you leave the note's Body field empty, the subject will be copied to the body field when a new note is created. When editing a note, use the Copy, Paste, Cut, Undo, Select All, <a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#fndrep">Find</a> and <a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#fndrep">Replace</a> commands (under the Edit menu) to speed up the job. To insert a date stamp at the current cursor location, choose the Insert/Date & Time menu item. To insert contact information at the current cursor location, choose the Insert/Contact menu item. See <a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#contact">Insert Contact</a> dialog box. To insert a user notification, choose the Insert/Notification menu item. See the <a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#notify">Notification</a> dialog box. To send a note via email, choose the File/Send Mail menu item. The <a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#email">Send Mail</a> dialog box will appear. You may import plain text or rich text files into the note editor by choosing the File/Import menu item. You may export a note as plain text or rich text file by choosing the File/Export menu item. You may change the font of selected text, paragraph alignment and indentation, and tab stops, using the Format/<a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#font1">Font</a>, Format/<a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#para">Paragraph</a>, and Format/<a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#tabs">Tabs</a> menu commands. These commands are unavailable if text formatting is disabled; see the <a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#options">Options</a> dialog box. Note1: text formatting is not supported on Palm-Size PCs. Note2: RTF import/export is not supported on Palm-Size PCs. Note3: if you synchronize with Microsoft Outlook, formatted notes will be converted to plain text, because this feature is not supported by Outlook. Select the field in the In Field box (use <All Fields> to look in subject, type, and note fields) and tap Find Next. Tap Select All to select all notes that contain the specified text. For a case sensitive search, check the Match Case box. To use <a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#regex">regular expression</a> search, check the Regular Expression box. To search for specific text in all Notes databases, check the Search All Databases box. The Found Records dialog box will appear. All records that contain the specified text will be added to the Found Records list. To view, select the desired record from this list and tap OK. The database that contains the selected record will be loaded. If a search is successful, the first note containing the specified text will be highlighted. If the specified text is not found, an error message appears.  <hr>  <a name="email"></a><h4>Sending Email</h4> The notes editor allows you to send email messages directly from HPC Notes. <h4>Send Mail Dialog Box</h4> Enter the desired email address in the To box and select the Mail Service you wish to use to send the message. You can enter different email addresses in the Cc and Bcc boxes. Tap OK. The message will be placed into the mail client Outbox and will be sent when you go on-line. If you don’t know the address but have it in your Contacts database tap <...> to select an email address using the <a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#address"> Choose Address</a> dialog box. If you have multiple email services, select the service you want to use to send the email from the Mail Service list. You may send one or more notes in a single email as an attachment. To do so, check the Send Note(s) as Attachment box. the Email Note as Attachment dialog box will appear. Using this dialog box, you may provide subject, additional message text and choose a file format for attachment(s). Note: if you choose Rich Text Format, notes that are stored in the database as plain text will be sent as text, and not as RTF files. See Also <a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#address">Choose Address dialog box</a> <a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#editor">Note Editor</a>  <hr>  <a name="address"></a><h4>Choose Address Dialog Box</h4> The Choose Address dialog box displays a list of all email addresses entered into the Contacts database. You may sort this list by the Person’s name or Company name. To select an address, click on the desired email address entry and tap OK. Use Sort Order options to sort by the Person’s name or Company Name. Note: If the selected sort order doesnÆt exist in the contacts database, the email addresses list will not be sorted in this order. Use Contact Manager to create sort order(s). See Also <a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#email">Sending Email</a> <a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#editor">Note Editor</a>  <hr>  <a name="stat"></a><h4>Statistics dialog box</h4> The Statistics dialog box displays statistics information for the current file, such as number of paragraphs, lines, words, characters and characters with spaces. It also displays the file name and last modification date. This information is extremely useful to writers who need to know word count for a document.  <hr>  <a name="filter"></a><h4>Filtering Notes</h4> You can filter notes by date, text, color, and priority. To apply the filter to the current notes list, choose the Filter item from the View menu. The Filter dialog box will appear. <ul> <li>To enable the date filter, check the Use Date Filter box in the Date property sheet, then select the desired date range in the Dates list. You can also enter a customized date range. The customized dates must be entered in the mm/dd/yy format.</li> <li>To enable the text filter, check the Use Text Filter box in the Text property sheet, then enter the desired text into the Search for the Text box. You can also choose the field name from the In Field box. Check the Ignore Case box if you want the case insensitive filter and the Regular Expression box if you want to use <a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#regex">regular expression</a>.</li> <li>To enable the color filter, check the Use Color Filter box in the Color & Priority property sheet, then choose the desired color from the Colors list.</li> <li>To enable the priority filter, check the Use Priority Filter box in the Color & Priority property sheet, then choose the desired priority from the Priority list.</li> </ul> Tap OK to apply the filter to the current database. The filter settings will be saved when you exit HPC Notes and will be used when you run the program again.  <hr>  <a name="import"></a><h4>Importing and Exporting Notes</h4> You can <a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#import1">import</a> and <a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#export1">export</a> notes as text files. Tab Separated Values and Comma Separated Values (CSV) formats are currently supported. Using Export and Import commands you can transfer data between HPC Notes and other applications, such as Microsoft Outlook. <h4><a name="import1"></a>Importing Notes From A File</h4> <ul> <li>Choose Import item from the File menu. <li>Select the desired file format and tap OK. <li>The standard Open dialog box will appear. Select the desired file name and tap OK. <li>In the <a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#map">Map Custom Fields</a> dialog box, map the file and HPC Notes fields. <li>Modify import options in the <a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#impopt">Import Options</a> dialog box, as you wish, and tap OK. </ul> <h4><a name="export1"></a>Exporting Notes To A File</h4> <ul> <li>Choose the Export item from the File menu. Export To File dialog box will appear. <li>Select the desired file format in the Select the File Type to Export To list. <li>Check Put Field Names In the First Record box to put field names into the first record. <li>Tap OK. <li>In the standard Save As dialog box, enter the desired file name into the Name box and tap OK. </ul> Note: Password protected notes will not be exported for security reasons. If this happens, a warning message will be displayed. See Also <a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#map">Map Custom Fields dialog box</a> <a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#impopt">Import Options dialog box</a>  <hr>  <a name="map"></a><h4>Map Custom Fields Dialog Box</h4> To map custom fields: <menu> <li>Select the field you want to import in the File Fields list. <li>Select the appropriate destination field in the HPC Notes Fields list. <li>Tap Map Field button to create the mapping. <li>To clear mapping, tap the Clear Map button. <li>To set a default mapping (if possible) tap the Default Map button. <li>Tap OK to continue. </menu> See Also <a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#import">Importing and exporting notes</a> <a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#impopt">Import Options dialog box</a>  <hr>  <a name="impopt"></a><h4>Import Options Dialog Box</h4> Use this dialog box to set import options. <menu> <li>To allow duplicate notes to be created, select the Allow Duplicate items to be Created option. <li>To replace duplicate notes with imported notes, select the Replace Duplicate Items With Imported option. <li>To skip duplicate items, select the Do Not Import Duplicate Items option. <li>Select the default color for the new note(s) that will be created as a result of this operation. <li>Check Skip First (Header) Record to skip the very first record of the imported files. </menu> Note: When searching for duplicate notes only the Note Body field is used. Notes with a different subject or type, but with the same body, will be treated as duplicate items. For a case sensitive search, check the Match Case box. If the search is successful, the found text will be selected in the note edit box. If the specified text is not found, an error message appears. To Replace specific text in the Replace dialog box, type the text you want to replace in the Find What box, and the replacement text in the Replace With box. Tap Find. See Also <a HREF="hpcnotes.htm#editor">Note Editor</a>  <hr>  <a name="passwd"></a><h4>Protect Note Dialog Box</h4> Entering a password will protect your Note(s) from unauthorized access. The protected notes will also be encrypted using your password as an encryption key. If you are creating a password for the first time, the Old Password box is disabled. Enter the desired password in the New Password and Confirm the Password boxes and tap OK. An error message will appear if passwords in the New Password and Confirm Password boxes are not identical. To change a password, please enter the current password in Old Password edit box and then enter a new password in both New Password and Old Password boxes. To remove password protection, enter the current password in the Old Password box and then tap OK. The little "key" icon in the notes list view will indicate which notes are password protected (encrypted). The Register HPC Notes dialog box will appear. Enter the registration code (serial number) in the Registration Code box, and tap Register Now. You may copy a backup file onto your desktop PC and store it in the safe place, then you may copy this file back on your mobile device and restore one or more notes databases if needed. Note: Backup and restore commands require Windows CE Professional edition (2.11 or later) and my not be available on older mobile devices. To backup one or more notes databases: <menu> <li>Choose the File/Database/Backup command from the main menu. <li>In the Backup Databases dialog box, select the Backup All Notes Databases option to backup all databases, or the Backup Selected Notes Databases option and select one or more databases from the list below. <li>Tap OK. <li>In the Save As dialog box, enter the name for the backup file and tap OK. </menu> During the backup operation the Backup Progress dialog box will be displayed. This operation can take a few minutes if notes databases are large. To restore one or more notes databases from the backup file: <menu> <li>Choose the File/Database/Restore command from the main menu. <li>In the Open dialog box, choose the backup file name and tap OK. <li>In the Restore Databases dialog box select the Restore All Notes Databases option to restore all databases, or the Restore Selected Notes Databases option and select one or more databases from the list below. <li>Tap OK. </menu> During the restore operation the Restore Progress dialog box will be displayed. This operation can take a few minutes if notes databases are large. An ordinary character is a simple regular expression which matches that character and nothing else. The special characters are $, ^, ., *, +, ?, [, ] and \. Any other character appearing in a regular expression is ordinary, unless a \ precedes it. For example, f is not a special character, so it is ordinary, and therefore f is a regular expression that matches the string f and no other string. (It does not match the string ff.) Likewise, o is a regular expression that matches only o. Any two regular expressions a and b can be concatenated. The result is a regular expression which matches a string if a matches some amount of the beginning of that string and b matches the rest of the string. As a simple example, we can concatenate the regular expressions f and o to get the regular expression fo, which matches only the string fo. Still trivial. Note: for Unix compatibility, special characters are treated as ordinary ones if they are in contexts where their special meanings make no sense. For example, *foo treats * as ordinary since there is no preceding expression on which the * can act. It is poor practice to depend on this behavior; better to quote the special character anyway, regardless of where it appears. <table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="100%"> <tr> <td width="100" valign="top"> . (dot) </td> <td valign="top"> is a special character that matches anything except a new line. Using concatenation, we can make regular expressions like a.b which matches any three-character string which begins with a and ends with b. </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="100" valign="top"> * </td> <td valign="top"> is not a construct by itself; it is a suffix, which means the preceding regular expression is to be repeated as many times as possible. In fo*, the * applies to the o, so fo* matches f followed by any number of o's. The case of zero o's is allowed: fo* does match f. * always applies to the smallest possible preceding expression. Thus, fo* has a repeating o, not a repeating fo. The matcher processes a * construct by matching immediately, as many repetitions as can be found. Then it continues with the rest of the pattern. If that fails, backtracking occurs, discarding some of the matches of the *'d construct in case that makes it possible to match the rest of the pattern. For example, matching c[ad]*ar against the string caddaar, the [ad]* first matches `addaa', but this does not allow the next a in the pattern to match. So the last of the matches of [ad] is undone and the following a is tried again. Now it succeeds </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="100" valign="top"> + </td> <td valign="top"> + is like * except that at least one match for the preceding pattern is required for +. Thus, c[ad]+r does not match cr but does match anything else that c[ad]*r would match. </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="100" valign="top"> ? </td> <td valign="top"> ? is like * except that it allows either zero or one match for the preceding pattern. Thus, c[ad]?r matches cr or car or cdr, and nothing else. </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="100" valign="top"> [ ... ] </td> <td valign="top"> [ begins a character set, which is terminated by a ]. In the simplest case, the characters between the two form the set. Thus, [ad] matches either a or d, [ad]* matches any string of a's and d's (including the empty string), from which it follows that c[ad]*r matches car, etc. Character ranges can also be included in a character set, by writing two characters with a - between them. Thus, [a-z] matches any lower-case letter. Ranges may be intermixed freely with individual characters, as in [a-z$%.], which matches any lower case letter or $, % or period. Note that the usual special characters are not special any more inside a character set. A completely different set of special characters exists inside character sets: ], - and ^. To include a ] in a character set, you must make it the first character. For example, []a] matches ] or a. To include a -, you must use it in a context where it cannot possibly indicate a range: that is, as the first character, or immediately after a range. </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="100" valign="top"> [^ ... ] </td> <td valign="top"> [^ begins a complement character set, which matches any character except the ones specified. Thus, [^a-z0-9A-Z] matches all characters except letters and digits. ^ is not special in a character set unless it is the first character. The character following the ^ is treated as if it were first (it may be a - or a ]). </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="100" valign="top"> ^ </td> <td valign="top"> is a special character that matches the empty string, but only if at the beginning of a line in the text being matched. Otherwise it fails to match anything. Thus, ^foo matches a foo which occurs at the beginning of a line. </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="100" valign="top"> $ </td> <td valign="top"> is similar to ^ but matches only at the end of a line. Thus, xx*$ matches a string of one or more x's at the end of a line. </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="100" valign="top"> \ </td> <td valign="top"> has two functions: it quotes the above special characters (including \), and it introduces additional special constructs. Because \ quotes special characters, \$ is a regular expression which matches only $, and \[ is a regular expression which matches only [, and so on. For the most part, \ followed by any character matches only that character. However, there are several exceptions: characters which, when preceded by \, are special constructs. Such characters are always ordinary when encountered on their own. No new special characters will ever be defined. All extensions to the regular expression syntax are made by defining new two-character constructs that begin with \. </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="100" valign="top"> \| </td> <td valign="top"> specifies an alternative. Two regular expressions a and b with \| in between form an expression that matches anything that either a or b will match. Thus, foo\|bar matches either foo or bar but no other string. \| applies to the largest possible surrounding expressions. Only a surrounding $ ... $ grouping can limit the grouping power of \|. Full backtracking capability exists when multiple \|'s are used. </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="100" valign="top"> $ ... $ </td> <td valign="top"> is a grouping construct that serves three purposes: <menu> <li>To enclose a set of \| alternatives for other operations. Thus, $foo\|bar$x matches either foox or barx. <li> To enclose a complicated expression for the postfix * to operate on. Thus, ba$na$* matches bananana', etc., with any (zero or more) number of na's. <li>To mark a matched substring for future reference. This last application is not a consequence of the idea of a parenthetical grouping; it is a separate feature which happens to be assigned as a second meaning to the same $ ... $ construct because there is no conflict in practice between the two meanings. Here is an explanation of this feature: \digit. After the end of a $ ... $' construct, the matcher remembers the beginning and end of the text matched by that construct. Then, later on in the regular expression, you can use \ followed by a digit to mean match the same text matched the digit'th time by the $ ... $ construct. The $ ... $ constructs are numbered in order of commencement in the regular expression. The strings matching the first nine $ ... $ constructs appearing in a regular expression are assigned numbers 1 through 9 in order of their beginnings. \1 through \9 may be used to refer to the text matched by the corresponding $ ... $ construct. For example, $.*$\1 matches any string that is composed of two identical halves. The $.*$ matches the first half, which may be anything, but the \1 that follows must match the same exact text. </menu> </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="100" valign="top"> \b </td> <td valign="top"> matches the empty string, but only if it is at the beginning or end of a word.
