- GETTING STARTED
-
- Equipment Requirements
- This software is designed for operation on IBM and compatible
- computers running on DOS versions 3∙0 or later. It will
- operate from floppy disk, however it's operation will be
- smoother and faster from a hard disk.
- While it is configured for colour monitors, it will operate
- well using monochrome monitors. Note that on some monochrome
- monitors the active control or hypertext button ("continue",
- "quit", etc.) may appear to be the button that is not
- highlighted. Also note that the colour Blue appears as lines
- on Hercules screens.
- The operation of the program can be controlled by both the
- keyboard and a mouse.
-
-
- Installing on a Hard Disk
- To install on a hard disk, first insert the distribution disk
- into your floppy disk drive (usually drive A:). Then change to
- drive A: by typing A: and pressing the Enter key. At the A:\
- prompt type install and press Enter. Follow the prompts on
- the screen and the program will be automatically installed onto
- your harddisk in a directory called planning.
-
- To start the program, type planning and press Enter.
-
- The program is started by a batch file planning.bat. Should
- you be using a menu system on your computer, it is necessary to
- specify this batch file in the menu systems set-up to correctly
- start the program.
-
- UNINSTALLING
- The program can also be uninstalled, completely deleting all
- files and removing the planning directory from your harddisk.
- To do this change to the planning directory on the harddisk
- by typing at the C:\ prompt cd\planning and pressing enter.
- Then type install, press enter and choose the uninstall
- option U.
-
- When you first start the programme you will notice you pass
- through the title screen and there will be some hypertext
- buttons marked "Licence" and "Copyright" - be sure to check
- the contents of these two files by moving the highlight onto
- these button and clicking or pressing enter.
-
- After the title screens, you are presented with the Main Menu
- where the different learning modules are listed. Again simply
- highlight the module that you wish to look through and click
- with the left button of the mouse or press enter. You also can
- select a Menu item by pressing the highlighted capital letter.
- If the modules are numbered it is suggested that you proceed in
- the order of that numbering, otherwise choose any module that
- interests you.
-
-
-
- OPERATION
-
-
- The program is very simple to "drive" - it's structured around
- using "highlighted" control buttons, most of which are located
- at the bottom of the screen. You highlight these buttons by
- using either the mouse or moving the highlight with the arrow
- keys. There are three ways to control the operation of the
- program - you can either:
- - press the highlighted letter on the appropriate button,
- - cursor across with the left or right arrow key then
- press the Enter key,
- OR - click twice with the Mouse (once to select, once to
- activate).
-
- If at any point in the program you wish to back-track and look
- at a previous screen, move the highlight on the bottom line of
- the screen across to PAGEBACK and click on the mouse left
- button or press enter. This will take you back one screen. If
- you wish to go back more than one screen make sure to move the
- highlight button again across to PAGEBACK, as the default
- position for the highlight bar is on CONTINUE button. This
- obviously only applies to screens where these control buttons
- are shown on the bottom line. This is not possible with screens
- set up for automatic advance.
-
- When you are working through a module should you wish to exit
- that module, move the highlight bar across to the QUIT button
- and click on the mouse left button or press enter - and that
- will take you back to the Main Menu.
-
- At any time you require help when you are working through a
- module move the highlight bar on the bottom line of the screen
- across to the HELP button and click on the mouse left button or
- press enter. You will then be presented with the Help Menu.
- choose the aspect of help required by moving the highlight bar
- with the mouse or arrow keys and then clicking with the left
- mouse button or pressing enter. To exit a Help screen or the
- Help Menu, press the ESCape key.
-
- With regard to the Worksheet Printing facility: note that
- you will get an error message if you attempt to print the
- ATTITUDE report without having completed the Attitude
- Assessment contained in "The Way Ahead". This is because the
- file for this report is not generated until you undertake the
- assessment.
-
-
-
- WORK BOOK
-
- The Work Book module is a text editor allowing you to
- enter your thoughts and ideas as you work through the planning
- process. This is accessed by highlighting the "Work Book"
- button at the bottom of the screen. You can either
- - press the letter "W",
- - cursor across with the left or right arrow key then
- press the Enter key,
- OR - click twice with the Mouse (once to select, once to
- activate).
-
- You are then presented with a Menu listing the various
- Worksheets available. Cursor down to the appropriate one using
- the Down arrow key and press the Enter key - or click on the
- chosen Worksheet with the Mouse.
-
- Files saved in the Work Book are described as DOS or
- ASCII text files and can be read into any word processor as
- such. This is generally as simple as Opening an existing
- document file in the word processor - consult the Manual covering
- your word processor for further information on this.
-
- The Work Book module has all the usual editing facilities
- available. Note that the Work Book is only keyboard driven -
- the Mouse will not control its operation. There is an in-built
- HELP system that can be accessed by pressing the F1 function key.
- The basic control of the Work Book is through the Function keys -
- these are shown on the bottom of the screen. They are:
-
- F1 HELP
- F2 Save (without exiting the worksheet)
- F3 Print (to default printer - "prn")
- F5 Resize Work Book window
- F9 Abandon - exit worksheet without
- saving any changes made
- F10 Save & Exit the worksheet.
-
- When worksheets are Saved, they are saved into the
- directory where the program is located. Other editing functions
- are controlled by the use of the Control key. They are:
-
- PgUp moves cursor UP one screen-full
- PgDn moves cursor DOWN one screen-full
- Ctrl-PgUp moves cursor to TOP of worksheet
- Ctrl-PgDn moves cursor to BOTTOM of worksheet
- Ctrl-Home moves cursor to TOP of screen
- Ctrl-End moves cursor to BOTTOM of screen
- Home moves cursor to beginning of line
- End moves cursor to end of line
-
- Ctrl-Y deletes line where cursor is located
- Ctrl-KB begins blocking text (highlighting)
- Ctrl-KK ends blocking text (highlighting)
- Ctrl-KC copies blocked text to the new point
- where the cursor is located
- Ctrl-KV moves blocked text to the new point
- where the cursor is located
-
- When using these commands, you hold down the Control (Ctrl)
- key and then press (say) the "K" followed by the "V" keys. Then
- you release the Control key. Additional commands are listed in
- the Work Book (TW-Notes) HELP system by pressing the F1 key.
-
-
-
- Work Book Privacy for multiple users (Site Licences)
-
- This version of the software is designed for single users
- in that the users Work Book files are kept in the programs
- directory - C:\planning. Thus in a situation where more than
- one user is using the software (as in a training organisation)
- users have no privacy or confidentiality for their work, nor
- can other users utilise the software without having to
- overwrite the previous user's work.
-
- The is a specially configured version of Planning for Me !
- designed for use in training organisations that saves user's
- Work Book document files to a floppy disk in drive A:.
-
-
-
- How to Benefit from PFM
-
- Do not attempt to work through Planning for Me! and the
- worksheets in one sitting !! Planning and Goal setting work
- like this is a process -- not an event.
-
- By all means have a look through the entire package to get
- an overview of what you will be doing. Maybe you also may like
- to print out the Worksheet blanks to get an idea of what they
- cover. In the first module (Setting Personal Goals) there is a
- "Map" of the process to give you a sence of direction.
-
- This work requires that you come back to it regularly to
- review and maybe change sections, prompted by new thoughts and
- ideas.
