Help Selecting a Password

Patient Passwords and the Practice Password are two separate things.
The usual sequence is to enter the practice password when the program is started,
and then the patient password is entered if access to a mobile record is needed.

The Practice Password is known only to the carer / practice. It is typed in when the PCMR Program
is started. It gives access to the records stored on the computer / network at the practice.

The Patient Password is known to the patient, and the patient tells the carer their
password at the time that a mobile record is accessed.

The Patient may have 2 passwords. There is only 1 practice password.

The longer and more unpredictable your password is, the more secure your record is.
Patient passwords may be up to 25 characters long.
The single Practice Password may be up to 50 characters long.

The passwords may include any typed characters including spaces and punctuation.

Note well:
The tradeoff for a secure password is the possible difficulty remembering it.
The same precautions that apply to a bank pin number of course similarly apply to the secrecy of a password.

It is of course possible that the patient does not wish for the record to be secure, in which case carrying the PCMR
has the same security as carrying a letter - anyone can read it if it falls in the street.

SECURITY ISSUES

How Secure is a PCMR (Patient Controlled Medical Record produced by the NextMR Program)

As the programmer, I believe that the simplest method for illegally accessing a NextMR / NextMR is to
acquire the password off the Patient. It is therefore important that the Patient considers his/her
password to be as secret a thing as a 'pin number'.

The Encryption used in this Software uses respected algorithms.

Developments in computing power, and complexities of software can sometimes reveal vulnerabilities
in software that were not anticipated initially. Please Register your copy of Next Generation Suite with
our Server so that we may email you any security updates.

Please contact us at the NextMR / NextMR website if you feel you might
have some concerns or useful information for the NextMR team.

Emergency Details

For more information see Emergency Details.

Initial Setting up of the NextMR Program on a Computer

The biggest issue is that when you have the program to setup NextMR on a disk, how can you be sure that some
malicious person has not substituted the NextMR Setup program for a virus ??

In the real world unfortunately you can never be more than 99% sure... and so you should only 'Run' a program that is
foreign to your computer if you have confidence on where it has been, and ideally also after you have used
a recognised virus checker ( that is up to date ) to check it.

The safest way you can get a copy of the "NextMR Program"
( required to use NextMR's ) is to download it from the
NextMR Website .
(Approx 3 mins with a 56K modem)

Putting Patient Data Disks ( NextMR's ) into the computer

If you put for example a floppy disk into your computer, and use the NextMR program on your computer
to access the medical record on that disk, you will not just "catch a virus" on your computer.
NextMR will not actually 'run' any program on that disk without permission.

If NextMR comes across a type of file that it is not sure of the security of it will not use it.
IF YOU CAN READ THIS TEXT
AND
IT HAS A GREEN BACKGROUND
YOU HAVE FULL VML CAPABILITY
</v:textbox></v:roundrect>
IF YOU CANNOT SEE THE TEXT WITH GREEN BACKGROUND ABOVE THIS TEXT, YOU DO NOT HAVE VML CAPABILITY INSTALLED ON YOUR
COMPUTER. YOU CAN HOWEVER GET A FREE UPGRADE FROM MICROSOFT.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Most of the NextMR/Patient Controlled Medical Record part of this software runs normally on
windows 98 on.

RecallPlus needs one extra free component added to some computers -> "VML"

All the things required to run this program on older versions of windows are free downloads

Windows XP. No Problems.

Windows 98, 2000, ME with Internet Explorer 5.5 or better --> no problems.
The easiest thing to do is install Internet Explorer 6.0 as VML is usually AUTOMATICALLY
a part of this.(If it does not work for you, the follow the instructions below).

VML is a PART OF Internet Explorer versions 5.0 onwards, but you have to specifically
agree to install it with older editions.
VERSION 5.5 OR VERSION 6.0 ARE RECOMMENDED

This is done by starting an Internet Explorer Install Program then
1.Selecting "Customise your Browser" rather than the "Install now-Typical" install,
2.Ticking all of the "Explorer" component options, and all of the "MultiMedia Components" down further ..especially
the box saying 'VML' or Vector Graphics Rendering

Remember to restart your computer after this upgrade installations.

If the system refuses to let you install it, you have to actually uninstall Internet Explorer via the Control Panel / Add/Remove Software Functions, before it will let you re-install it as above again.

If you have installed this on your computer, the NextGenerationSuite, when you click on 'Check Your System is Able to Run this Software' will show that VML is installed and everything is fine.
Repeat ... all the things required to run this program on older versions of windows are free downloads

This program has not been tested with windows 95.

What happens without Vector Graphic Rendering (VML)

Without VML you can view pictures in PCMR's however you are not able to vary the brightness nor vary the contrast.

You will also not be able to use the RECALLPLUS Study Program, because, as a highly graphical program, it uses VML extensively.

VML is a method for drawing pictures and manipulating pictures.

Other Requirements

Other requirements are optional.

The better the videocard on the computer, the smoother and faster the images will be manipulated.

As time goes on it will become more essential for carers to become able to read more
convenient forms of mobile storage than floppy disks... e.g. Sercure Digital Mobile
Storage Devices ( which fit into the wallet ).

PRACTICE AND INSTANCE DETAILS BOX

Specialty most indicative of this location

This information is used to characterise the information being added to the patient
record. In the Patient Overview page there are many
pages of information which are characterised by a specialty type and an action.
If you enter that you are a General Practitioner and you then add a text entry to the
patient record, the page
added to the record will symbolise that specialty and the opinion you have given.

.. represents GP -> opinion/text .

Name of Doctor or Client or Practice at this Location.

The name you enter will be recorded with any entries you make to the patient record.

Data Directory -> Where you would like the patient records stored.

This is the location on this computer or network where patient data is stored. If you change
this location you will not be able to access the patient records stored at that location ( unless
you copy the entire directories' contents to the new location ). So be careful !.

One good reason to change the entry at this location, is if you wish multiple computers to
be able to access the information at a practice.
Note well that the NextMR Program does not claim to be a fully fledged database product
and as such you are warned NOT to have more than one Doctor accessing the same patient record
simultaneously, as results may be unpredictable.
This should not be hard to avoid and in fact is unlikely.

</C><NameHF>dlgstructures.htm</NameHF><C>

Welcome to the Structures Box.

Structures are a 'set' of simpler objects.
The objects which can contribute to a structure include, lines (multilines, polylines), circles and labels.

When you right click on a text object, and select structures, as a default, the set of simple objects associated with that text
(i.e. whatever drawings you have done associated with that text) are displayed in the 'Structures Box'.

You immediately have the option to add this to the other structures you have saved by clicking on the
'Capture this structure for future use' button.
Alternatively you may press the two 'scrolling buttons' above the image, which will allow you to look through other images
to add.
If you find an image that you wish to add click on 'Add This Structure to Card'.

The other thing of importance is the ability to increase and decrease the size of your image, so that you may suite it better to the
page.
You may re-save the new image if you prefer a different size (using 'capture').

You may add what you see at any time,
using the 'Add' button when you see fit.

What to do with the structure once is is on the card

The important thing to understand is that the 'structure' is simply a collection of usual objects,
any one of which is manipulated as you usually would.
Once a structure is added to the card, first move it around using the 'structure' text to the location desired.

Then
Option 1
Then right click on 'Structure' (text box), and select 'Re-Associate All' (which will re-associate all of the lines, circles and labels with another text if you wish to do this),
then click on the text you wish to associate all the images with.

Then Delete the structure Text.

OR Option 2
right click on the background, and select 'Move Relative Y/N' (to allow you to move texts without them moving the structures to which they
belong), and then to move the 'Structure' (text box) to whereever you would like it, then edit it to the name you wish for as usual.
</C><NameHF>dlgsynchronise.htm</NameHF><C>

Synchronising with Patient Data

There may be many types of mobile store that a given patient turns up with.
The common combination in the near future for example might be that the patient
carries a floppy disk and a Sercure Digital Compatible card... the former so that
carers with minimal systems can access the important data, the latter so that
it can be kept in the wallet and for the extra storage ( 8meg-1gig ).

Therefore at the time of logon to the patient record, we have to determine which
mobile storage devices we are 'synchronising' with.

A password and mouse manipulation of the list of mobile stores shown is needed.

You can elect whether or not you want objects associated with a textbox to move when you move the textbox.
By default, objects DO NOT move when you move their textbox. You can change this from learning mode ("Move Relative Y/N" from the right click list of options).

For the latest information Please Jump to The RecallPlus Website

What are the benefits of being an Editor??

You will have a reason to keep up to date on the area which interests you.
You will recieve the latest in opinion from around the world on the topic which interests you via the user feedback.
If people like the information you provide, you will earn an income from selling this information.

What information gets sent to me from the users ??

Users, whereever they may be on the globe, may find omissions, new information or errors in your chapter information compared to what
they believe.
When they edit their version of the chapter, that information gets sent back to the RECALLPLUS server.
That information is provided to you, to help you make your chapters even more up to date and stimulating.

What is the payment rate??

At any time this may change so the suggestion is that you should check the website.
Provisionally as of August 2002 you will recieve 50% of the sales you make over the internet, gross.

How much are my chapters worth?

Each chapter you place on the internet is priced BY YOU, with a minimum set by the RECALLPLUS team, which depends on
the size of a chapter.

Generally the Minimum Set by the RecallPlus team will be below the price you will wish to sell your work for.
For Example:
The Minimum Price for a 10000 question chapter without any Audiovisual Additions would be set about the $US 5 mark to cover costs
of the network including user feedback.
This is obviously cheaper than a textbook, as it should be in the absence of a need for a printing press and transport of materials.

This is obviously also cheaper than a typical specialist would sell their time.

It is expected that most editors of a 10000 question chapter , depending on the quality of their chapter,
the specialty and size of their market, will sell their information for more than this minimum.
HOWEVER WHEN AN EDITOR JUST STARTING EDITING A CHAPTER, IT MIGHT BE THAT THIS IS A REASONABLE THING.
Some editors may, enter the market with an 'average product' e.g. something they have written for some other reason, and
only charge a minimal price, and steadily upgrade the quality of your chapter over time.

THIS IS ACTUALLY THE PROCEDURE WE RECOMMEND.

Again, it is up to the Editor/Author, at any level above the minimum set, to select their own price.
Please keep in mind that the market for your information has alternative sources for the same information, some
of which are free (though invariably less useful),
and some of which may be your fellow editors.

If you are one of many POTENTIAL EDITORS who has a set of notes on some topic, which, if it was in RECALLPLUS you
would be happy to be an Editor/Author for it, please read on.

I have a lot of material that I would like to become an Editor/Author for, but I am not sure I want to transfer it??
Is there some way of transferring it to RECALLPLUS easily??

Many POTENTIAL Editors/Authors may have material they think would be useful to Subscribers in another form, and not specifically designed
for RECALLPLUS.
E.g. they have notes on computer.

It may be possible, if you contact us, that we could arrange for them to be transferred to the RECALLPLUS medium, for you to be the Editor/Author of them.

Please contact us if you are in this boat as we are very likely to be able to offer you an alternative to the tedious task of
re-typing in the lot.

What is to stop me from selling poor Quality Information to unsuspecting Subscribers ?

The website provides reviews by Subscribers of your product.
If you gain a reputation for selling overpriced information, you will sell less.
Also RecallPlus, has to approve of new content on it's website, and may at any time withdraw your chapters
if it is not felt to be in the best interests of the website or the Subscribers that you continue.

I want to become an Editor/Author ... Now What ??

Please Jump to our website by Clicking here, and select the 'I want to be an Editor/Author'
section.

Breaks and Tips

Studies have shown that the most effective learning occurs before and after a break. For this reason, RecallPlus offers
you a break every 30 minutes (by default).
This break interval can be changed from OPTIONS / Preferences / Timing . Simply type in your
desired Time between breaks.
For most efficient learning, we recommend you leave this 30 minute break interval in place

When you enter a break, a STUDY TIP will appear.
These tips are based on the information gathered during the author's extensive research into study techniques, and are worth a read! Applying their messages to your study can make your study and your use of RecallPlus more efficient and effective.
To access the study tips without having to wait for a break, go to Tools / Study Tips

RecallPlus Search

Searching Can be done in either Learning or Test mode, however in test mode, when you jump to a Card, it will as usual only have
the first item shown initially.

How does one start a search

First you must open the search Box by either double clicking on a text item on the screen, or by clicking on the search button in the toolbar.

Once you have opened the search box, you may enter a term or part of a word, to search for it within the chapters that are open.

If you have exact word ticked, and search for 'pe'
you will get all the references when pe is used as a word on it's own. If you have 'exact word' turned off
you will also get cards containing such words as 'pernicious'.

It is useful to turn it off however for some searches.

You may also click on words or highlight words in the box below the "Enter Search Terms" Box.
The Text in this box is from the textbox you clicked on to get to the search box.

The results of your search are displayed in the box at the bottom. Double Click on these to navigate to them.
</C><NameHF>RecallplusTerms.htm</NameHF><C>

Explanation of Terms

CHAPTER
RecallPlus chapters are equivalent to the files of other programs. They typically contain cards on a similar topic,
similar to a chapter in a textbook.

CARD
Cards in RecallPlus contain the data. They are like the pages of information in a book, and similarly the cards make up
chapters. The screen in RecallPlus shows one card at a time

TEXTBOX
Textboxes are the boxes on a card which contain the information you are learning. They are the key items on the screen.
All other items on the screen (such as graphics) must be related to a textbox, and are meant to supplement the idea within
a textbox to make it more memorable.
A card can have as many textboxes as space allows

CONNECT
Connects are the arrows running between the textboxes. They indicate the relationships between the ideas contained in the textbox.
For example: on a simple card with two textboxes containing a question and an answer, the arrow (connect) will run from
the question to the answer.

Connects inform the system of how to test you on your cards. In test mode, textboxes are revealed sequentially along the direction of
the arrows.

GRAPHICS
Graphics are the images associated with textboxes. Ideally they act as a visual memory aid to help you to learn and
recall the information or idea contained in that textbox.

Graphics can be...

Drawings - free hand drawings, lines, arrows, rectangles or circles.

Labels - text outside a textbox, such as numbers to link ideas in order more visually than using the connects alone.

Images - pictures or AV material such as video or audio.

BACKGROUND
The background of a card is a blank area where there is no textbox, connect or graphic item.

RecallPlus Testing Mode

You are currently in testing mode.

This is the mode you can use to test yourself on the material you have entered into cards, or cards you have downloaded.

RecallPlus will test you on all cards you have seen, in an order determined by:
How well you have recalled the cards in the past
How significantly you have weighted the individual cards

Click Here for Explanation of Terms Used

Starting Test Mode

Enter test mode from the learning mode. There are two ways to so this

1) Click the "Force Test Mode" button in the toolbar. This will test you on the card you are viewing at the time.

2) Click the "Next Test" button in the toolbar. The program will determine which card to test you on and jump to the card most "due for testing".

You can tell you are in test mode as the background to the toolbar will appear GREEN.

When Should You Enter Test Mode?

You will know when a card is due for testing as the "Next Test" button in the toolbar will turn red
If you test yourself whenever this button turns red, you will learn as efficiently as possible.

Working in Test Mode

Revealing the card

Once you have started test mode, the first textbox of the first card you are to be tested on will appear on your screen.

This will usually be a prompt or a question. The rest of the card is purposely hidden from sight.

At this stage you should try and recall the answer to the question, or the information the prompt is designed to help you recall.

Once you have done this, click once to reveal the links (connects) to the next textboxes.

If you click again on this first textbox, all the linked boxes will appear. Alternatively you can click on the individual connects themselves to reveal the links one at a time.

Repeat this until the entire card has been revealed.

Once you have finished, a message will scroll across the top of your screen.

Indicating your level of recall

Once the card is fully revealed you can let RecallPlus know how well you recalled each link.

If you recalled a link, just leave it. RecallPlus will store this link as fully recalled and increase the time before it tests you on it again.

If you almost remembered a link, rightclick on the textbox once. The textbox will be surrounded with an ORANGE box and the link stored as "almost recalled". You will be tested on it with the same time spacing as it before you were tested.

If you didn't remember a link at all, righclick on the textbox twice. The box will be surrounded with RED, and the link stored as "not recalled". RecallPlus will reduce the time to the next testing on these links.

If you rightclick on a textbox a third time, the surrounding box will turn GREEN. This is the same as not clicking at all, and the link will be stored as "fully recalled"

Moving on to the next card

To move to the next card RecallPlus has determined you are to be tested on, click "Next Test"

Or to move to the next card in the chapter or to a specific card, use the navigation tools in the toolbar.

Exiting Test Mode

You can exit at any time by clicking on the "Force Test Mode / Click End Test" button in the toolbar

How does RecallPlus decide what to test me on?

The pool of cards RecallPlus tests you from includes all those you have seen before. If you download a chapter and don't look at the cards, you will not be tested on them.

This pool of cards is sorted into a "testing order" by taking two factors into account:

1) Time cards are due for testing. You are initially tested on each card at 10 minute intervals. This time changes with each testing, depending on which level of recall you indicated.

If you indicated you did know a link, the "time to test" for that link will increase by a factor of 8.

If you indicated you almost knew a link (orange), the "time to test" will remain unchanged.

If you indicated you did NOT know a link (red), the "time to test" will reduce by a factor of 8. (There is a minimum of 10 minutes between testing on each card)

2) Weighting. All cards are set with a default weighting of "40". If a card contains information that is particularly important you can set the weighting higher and you will be tested on these "more important" cards before other cards with the same "time to test".

Monitoring the Testing Status of a Chapter

When you open a chapter, you will see a graph indicating the testing status of the cards in the opened chapters.
From this graph, you can see:

When the cards were last tested

Which cards are due for testing (they are RED on the graph)

Which cards are not due for testing (they are GREEN )

Test Mode Related Functions and Options

Connects

Connects contain the information on when to test the associated link (textbox)

Rightclicking on a connect will offer you a list of options. Of that list, the useful functions are:

Move which enables you to reposition the connect. You can reposition it from either end or the middle.

EDIT which takes you to a screen showing the properties of the connect

Appearance of the connect can be altered by changing the width or colour. It can be made invisible by clicking on the button at the top of the edit box.

The weighting for that particular connect can be changed from here

The time that connect is due to be tested is displayed, including the time interval.

!DELETE! will delete the connect. All textboxes (except the first) must have a link going into them to save the card. This makes sense, as RecallPlus would have no way of testing you on a card without the connects.

Chapter Related Options

You can reset the memory of RecallPlus for a chapter. All time intervals will revert to the default (10 minutes).
Do this from the top function bar in Learning Mode. Select EDIT/CHAPTER/Delete all progress learning this chapter.

Card Related Options

To change the weight of a card select EDIT/CARD/Modify card's weight.

To reset the memory of RecallPlus for a card, and revert time intervals to default, select EDIT/CARD/Set as if NEVER SEEN BEFORE

To Change the Test Interval Multiplier and Divider

By default, if you indicate a card is completely recalled the time interval before the card is tested again is
multiplied by 8. So if the time interval WAS 10 minutes it will become 80 minutes.
Similarly if you indicate a card NOT recalled (red) the time interval will be divided by 8, so an 80 minute testing
interval will change to 10 minutes.

You can alter this multiplier/divider number.

To do this, select Options / Preferences / Timing and type in the new multiplier number. Then click "Apply" and "OK".

To Change the Minimum Interval to Test

By default this is set as 10 minutes. You will not be tested more frequenlty on any given card than every 10 minutes.
To change this, select Options / Preferences / Timing and type in the new minimal interval to test. Then click "Apply" and "OK".

Note that the default multiplier and timing are set in response to research on effective learning techniques.
It would be beneficial to your learning to leave these defaults in place!
