- II. UPDATES, PATCHES, AND GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING
-
-
- The following lists the most common problems.
-
- When referring to "the config tool", we mean you should exit Divine Divinity and start ConfigTool.exe,
- located in Divine Divinity's install directory.
-
- Changing video/sound options can be done during the game. Press esc to pop up the main game menu, select
- options, then video/sound.
-
-
- Problem: After I save the game, the game is frozen
- Cause: The save game function auto-pauses the game.
- Solution: unpause the game by pressing space
-
- Problem: Black squares appear around the imagery in the game
- Cause: Your video card does not support color keying.
- Solution: Turn on the alpha bit in the configuration tool.
-
- Problem: I get all kinds of graphical artefacts.
- Cause: Fog is not being supported by your driver/color keying is failing.
- Solution: Turn on the alpha bit in the configuration tool. Also, switch off fog in the video options.
-
- Problem: My mouse cursor becomes very slow when parts of the interface pop up in the game.
- Cause: Color keying is slow on your video drivers.
- Solution: Turn on the alpha bit in the configuration tool.
-
- Problem: The game runs very slow on my system.
- Cause: There can be multiple reasons.
- Solution:
- 1) download and install the latest drivers of your video card
- 2) check the chapter "PERFORMANCE TIPS" above.
- 3) If your graphics card is a Voodoo card, try using glide instead of direct3D.
- 4) If none of the above solutions solve your graphic problems, it could be that your video card is not
- compatible with Divine Divinity. Select either DirectDraw or software in the configuration tool (whichever
- runs faster).
-
- Problem: The cinematics do not play well. The cinematics are more like a slide show, block or even exit the
- application.
- Cause: the Bink player cannot play the movie optimally
- Solution:
- 1) download and install the latest version of the binkw32.dll: www.radgametools.com
- 2) download and install the latest drivers of your video card
- 3) on the ATI Radeon cards, setting the monitor refresh rate to 60 Hz solved the issue:
- a) right click on your desktop, select properties, settings
- b) click the advanced button, and choose monitor
- c) set the refresh frequency to 60 Hz, test and apply
- 4) if nothing helps, prevent the movies to run by deleting all files *.bik from the Static sub folder in
- Divine Divinity's install directory. You will not be able to see to cinematics, but you will be able to play
- the game.
-
- Problem: None of the above solves my problem
- Solution: Find the latest updates on information and patches for Divine Divinity on www.larian.com or
- www.divinedivinity.com.
-
-

-
- IV. MANUAL ERRATA AND CLARIFICATIONS
-
-
- Page 22: in the numbered list, item 16, replace "chest" by "equipment"
-
- Page 32-33: About the quest log buttons:
- 1) The first button is the "filter quests" button
- 2) The second button is the "jump to marker" button
-
- Page 39: "One particular nice trick *is* to keep one stone near a bed."
-
- Page 40: assigning hot keys: you can assign any one of the function keys to a skill or item. So the text "you
- can assign on of the function keys (F1-F6) to that item." Should mention "F1-F12", not "F1-F6"
-
- Page 45: Add this explanation about skills:
-
- There are two types of skills: active skills and passive skills. Once you have learnt a passive skill, you do
- not have to select it via the "browse spells" button to apply it; application is automatic. An active skill
- on
- the other hand will not "fire" its effects unless you make it your active skill and then click the right
- mouse button. Examples:
- 1) "Identify" is a passive skill. Once you have learnt it, you will automatically identify all items you
- receive or the items you point at. You do not have to set "Identify" as your active skill.
- 2) "Splitting arrows" is an active skill. If you left click an enemy, you will fire a normal shot (1
- arrow). If you set "splitting arrows" as your active skill and target an enemy by right clicking him, you
- will fire splitting arrows.
- Active skills always have a mana cost attached to it: you spend magical energy every time you use the skill.
- Passive skills do not cost mana.
-
- Page 45: "Each lock pick attempt will remove a lock pick from your inventory": should be: "Each successful
- lock pick attempt will."
-
- Page 48, 50: About the skills "poison weapon" and "skin of poison": The manual gives the impression that you
- can accumulate several doses of poison to achieve a stronger effect. This is not possible.
-
- Page 51: Heaven's gift description wrongly states that the item will be of low quality.
-
- Page 52: the skills of the "Path of the divine" are not explained. This is not an error. These skills are not
- explained because you can acquire them only later in the game.
-
- Page 53: Spear expertise is not a passive skill. So, if you actively use it, you will throw your weapon. If
- not, you will attack holding it in your hands.
-
- Page 54: the icons of "spiritual arrow" and "elemental arrow" should be swapped.
-
-
-
- V. PERFORMANCE TIPS
-
-
- Video Test and Performance: After installation, you can find the program ConfigTool.exe in Divine Divinity's
- install folder. You can try different settings to optimize your computer's performance.
-
- New rendering system: This option allows you to define how Divine Divinity will build up your screen.
- Choosing Glide or Direct3D acceleration generally improves performance greatly. If these modes are not
- available for your system:
- 1) Verify if you have the correct drivers installed for your graphical card (check your manufacturer's web
- site to download the latest drivers). Very old graphical cards do not support hardware acceleration.
- 2) If Glide and Direct3D are not available, try DirectDraw.
- 3) If all of the above fail, use Software rendering.
-
- If you experience a game in which your player character doesn't move fluently, or in which you don't have
- good control over your character because the mouse cursor does not react as it should, or moves "making
- little jumps", then try improving your computer's performance by:
- 1) choosing a lower resolution (800x600 or 640x480)
- 2) In the configuration tool, switch the smoothness option off (THIS MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE)
- 3) turning off some processor intensive graphical effects: (main game menu - options - video - performance)
- a) turn off fog generation
- b) turn off 3D shadows
- c) if still not fast enough, and if you are using "Software" or "DirectDraw" as rendering system, apply a
- lower lighting quality
- d) if still not fast enough, turn off Z-tunneling
-
- Sound settings: Mixing the different sound tracks is also processor intensive. You can try to gain
- performance by disabling:
- 1) ambient sounds
- 2) music
- You disable these tracks by setting their volume to 0 in the menu: main game menu - options - sound.
-
- CD Cache Performance: You can change the cache size of your CD-ROM to increase performance and decrease CD
- load times. To do this:
- 1) Open the Start Menu
- 2) Select Settings, Control Panel
- 3) Open the System control panel
- 4) Select the Performance tab
- 5) Click on the File Systems button
- 6) Select the CD-ROM tab
- CD-ROMs use different cache sizes and access patterns. So, you may need to experiment with these to find the
- optimum setting for your CD-ROM. If you have 64MB of RAM, you should set your cache size as small as possible.
-
- System Performance: Adding extra RAM or a faster hard disk can speed up game performance. The frames used in
- all monster and especially player animations, as well as the sound tracks occupy big chunks of memory. If you
- have lots of memory available, Divine Divinity can keep these frequently re-used data buffered in RAM. If
- not, the data cannot stay in physical memory: they get paged out (copied) to the hard disk if room is needed
- for other data. The process of swapping memory pages decreases overall memory performance greatly.
-
- You can notice that your system is extensively swapping memory pages if your hard disk is accessed frequently
- while you are playing the game and you are doing nothing "special": for instance, you should be able to do
- many fighting scenes, encountering different opponents using different attacks and magic without any disk
- access occurring. To prevent extensive swapping of memory pages, install more RAM. Having a fast hard disk
- makes the effect of page swapping more bearable. It also speeds up loading of "unique" data: conversations
- with voice, new sound tracks, cinematics,.
-
-
-
- VI. GAMEPLAY HINTS
-
-
- The following is a list of the hints that appear during the loading/saving screens.

- 27) Talk to as much people and solve as much quests as possible to gain extra experience. It's a no-
- brainer, but it helps...

- 30) Nearby guards quit harassing you when your reputation improves.
- 31) If you're put into prison, there are ways of escapin7).In the game that is. We do not endorse the real
- life thing.
- 32) Charms are cool. Spend at least a few skill points on the skill - it's worth it.
- 33) You should kill Otho's pigs. He really likes it. And don't forget that he has two of them...

- 36) To enter combat mode, click on the combat icon or press the 'C' key.
- 37) Take your time to experiment with the teleport stones when you acquire them. Try leaving one of them
- near a bed.
- 38) To begin trading, start a conversation with someone and click on the trade icon.
