- RefreshLock Frequently Asked Questions
- =================================================================================
-
- Hopefully, if in the unlikely situation you have a problem with RefreshLock, you
- should be able to find a solution here.
-
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Q: Does RefreshLock allow custom (non Windows-designated) modes?
-
- A: Yes it does, but only the modes that are displayed if you turn off the 'Hide
- modes that this monitor cannot display' in the Advanced Settings of the Display
- Control Panel. Completely custom frequencies are only available for me to do
- direct to hardware. RefreshLock, to serve it's purpose and be universal, must
- override refresh rates in this fashion. If I say to Windows through software,
- that I want a mode it doesn't have, it will deny it, and revert to 60Hz. End of
- story :-(
-
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Q: RefreshLock is only showing me up to 85Hz, or not all modes that are obviously
- compatible with my monitor.
-
- A: You do, a lot of the time, need to be using your manufacturer's monitor
- drivers to get the most out of your monitor with RefreshLock. The standard Plug &
- Play drivers do tend to be a bit too conservative when protecting your monitor.
-
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Q: I am getting pointer flicker in a game.
-
- A: Despite having to have seemed to fix the problem for everyone after V1.43,
- there is still the odd setup that has this problem. I'm afraid, for now, it's
- unavoidable. Sorry!
-
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Q: A game has visual defects (like a partial/totally blank screen).
-
- A: Generally, most games on most systems should work. If a particular game will
- not work, try this: go to the Advanced Settings>Timing, turn off 'Allocate some
- (small) CPU time to enforcing modes', go to 'Safety Features' and change the
- 'Milliseconds to pause before overrriding refresh rate' to about 2000ms. If that
- still fails, I'm sorry, but RefreshLock just won't work with that game on your
- system. I have tried to craft RefreshLock to work with everyone, but, there is
- still the odd setup that tends to have problems.
-
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Q: My screen is breaking up when RefreshLock loads.
-
- A: This is unusual, but you are probably using the wrong drivers for your
- monitor, or you are using custom modes that are not compatible it. It is HIGHLY
- recommended you close RefreshLock down and fix this problem immediately (by
- changing your monitor drivers and/or deleting the RefreshLock.ini file in the
- Windows directory), otherwise your hardware may get damaged.
-
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Q: RefreshLock is failing to override modes correctly, even though it says that
- a mode IS overridden.
-
- A: This is mostly a problem with specific graphics card settings. You need to
- check, by changing the Windows mode and frequency in the Advanced Settings of the
- Display Control Panel, that you can *manually*, and without RefreshLock loaded,
- specify the refresh rates and make them work. If you can change the modes
- yourself, RefreshLock should comply! I can't give you a general solution to this,
- but if you're getting locking problems the problem can be fixed a lot of the time
- in the Settings>Advanced... section of the Display Control Panel somewhere.
-
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Q: RefreshLock is showing well over what my monitor is capable of, yet it is only
- locking modes to 60Hz.
-
- A: The most common cause of this program is simply that the user has switched on
- the monitor after Windows has got to the desktop. Reboot your machine to reverse
- the effect.

- the use/misuse of this FAQ. See the EULA.txt file for more details.
