- DeskNotes Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
-
- Please feel free to e-mail the author at tmastran@mindspring.com if
- you have any questions about this software.
-
- Q. Am I'm really going to get a response if I send an e-mail?
-
- A. Ab-so-lutly! And usually the same day. I have over 400 notes on my
- system and rely on it to work every time, with no problems, which it
- does. (and I'm always running alpha code) :-)
-
- Q. I think the splash screen is cute, but I can't stand it. How do I get
- rid of it?
-
- A. It annoys me to. Register and you can make it disapear.
-
- Q. Does DeskNotes include alarms?
-
- A. Yes. Look at the Attribute Browser help topics.
-
- Q. Do you have forms setup for things like telephone messages?
-
- A. Yes. There are some bitmaps included that you can use for this.
-
- Q. I really like some of neat features I see in DeskNotes. Can you tell me how
- to do this in my programs?
-
- A. Yes. Send me an e-mail.
-
- Q. Are volume discounts available?
-
- Q. Yes. Send e-mail.
-
- Q. How do I make new notes created from the tray icon appear in a certain
- location, size and appearance?
-
- A. Pick a note you like and move it to where you want new notes created.
- Select Use as Default from the notes context menu. Any new new notes created
- from the tray icon will look just like it.
-
- Q. Can I export the text of all my notes to another program at one time?
-
- A. Yes. Registered users can select all notes in the Attribute Browser and
- copy the text to the clipboard. From there you can dump it anywhere.
-
- Q. How do I get DeskNotes to do wordwrap?
-
- A. In order to get DeskNotes to do all the graphical stuff it does, a
- text editor had to be written from scratch. This is not a simple
- thing in a graphical environment (what with character kerning, etc.).
- As a compromise this version will wordwrap your text when you resize
- a note, not while you type. Use the Paper properties page to turn
- this on. Perhaps in a future version as you type wrap will be included.
- After a year and a half of development it was felt that this one
- feature should not hold up the release of the really useful features
- added to this version.
-
- Q. I've installed DeskNotes into a directory, but would like to
- move it to another directory. Can I do this without re-installing
- it?
-
- A. Yes. The only effect this could have, is on any notes you may
- have created that use one of the delivered bitmap files as a
- background. When you open a note with a background that was in
- the original directory, DeskNotes will not be able to find it.
- It will display a dialog that you can use to tell where to look
- for the bitmap files.
-
- Q. When "View" "Background" is enabled in the Note Manager,
- why doesn't it repaint itself correctly when scrolling
- the window?
-
- A. The Windows Tree Control, used in the Note Manager, does
- not really support using a bitmap background. When it
- draws text, it always draws on a white background. You
- can see this by looking closely at some text. It does
- not draw the text transparently. DeskNotes fakes this
- by using an image that is mostly white to begin with.
- This option was included for those users who don't like
- staring at lot of bright whitespace.
-
- Q. How come when I try to look at some of the bitmaps included
- with DeskNotes, in another program, I get an error, and the
- bitmap is not displayed?
-
- A. The bitmaps can only be used in other applications by registered
- users.
-
- Q. I'm using some of the bitmaps on my Notes, but the colors look
- horrible. Why?
-
- A. Your display is set to 256 colors or less. Try increasing your color
- depth, or pick a bitmap that uses less colors. DeskNotes will try to
- make a reasonable color palette, but with the ability to open a lot
- (50 or more) notes at once, it doesn't have a lot of time to spend
- on it.
-
- Q. I'm trying to "Send" a note to another user, but keep getting the
- "Host is not Responding" message. What's wrong?
-
- A. Any number of things. Make sure the user you are trying to send
- is running DeskNotes, and that the "Receive" option is checked on
- the Network Properties dialog. Try it again. No luck?
-
- Go to a DOS prompt and try to ping the other machine:
- C:\> ping hostname
-
- No response? Open the "Hosts" file, in your Windows directory, in a
- text editor and look for the hostname you are trying to send to.
- If it's not there, find out they're IP address, and add an entry for the
- machine. (IF ON A REAL NETWORK as opposed to dial-up networking, or
- if not using a DNS server).
-
- Try to ping again. Got a response? No. Hmm...
- Try sending a note to yourself. On Windows 95 you may need to be
- connected to a real network. If not try sending a note to "127.0.0.1",
- this is a common "loopback" address that means your machine.
-
- Are you using a dial up connection to the internet? Or with RAS? Make
- sure the TCP/IP protocol is being bound to the dial-up adapter.
- You might want to find a buddy or administrator to look at it.
-
- Q. What is the "Temporary Files" directory for?
-
- A. When you send a note that is using a bitmap for a background, DeskNotes
- sends it also, so that the recipient will see the note exactly as you
- intended to. They are put into this directory. You can delete them if
- you like.
-
- Q. Why is my DeskNotes tray icon flashing?
-
- A. You just recieved a note. Click the new note to stop the flashing.
-
- Q. Why is my DeskNotes tray icon grayed out?
-
- A. You have a modal DeskNotes dialog open such as the Properties Dialog,
- that must be closed before you can use any other DeskNotes commands.
-
- Q. My notes seemed to be locked somehow. I can move them or type on them!
-
- A. Same reason as above.
-
- Q. My computer has exploded and I've lost my registration code. What do I do?
-
- A. Relax. They explode quite frequently. Just send an e-mail and it will
- be replaced. :-)
