- 1.0 Introduction
-
- This file contains last-minute updates that are not found in the
- User's Guide or in any addendum accompanying the software.
- Please read this file before proceeding with the installation or
- before running the program.
-
- Some Colorific disks are in a special extended density disk
- format (XDF format) which enables Colorific to provide more data
- on the disk. However, you cannot make a backup copy of XDF disks
- without a special utility program (XDFCOPY.EXE). Sonnetech can
- provide you with this utility, if necessary. Contact Sonnetech
- technical support to get a copy.
-
- There are a number of special instruction sheets available for
- using Colorific with high-end graphics applications such as
- Adobe Photoshop, Micrografx Picture Publisher, Corel Draw/Paint,
- Aldus PhotoStyler, and others. Contact the Sonnetech
- fax-on-demand and voice mail service at 415-957-9941 to request
- these documents.

-
- 2.0 KNOWN ISSUES 0R INCOMPATIBILITIES
-
-
- If you are prompted to load "disk 2" during installation, but
- you have only one disk, try reinstalling with no LAN connection.
- In particular, LANTASITIC users should reboot without the
- network loaded before installing this disk.
- If setup still fails to read this disk, contact Sonnetech
- Technical Support for a replacement copy.
-
- Colorific does not work with DOS programs. It is not tested
- with OS/2 emulating Windows, with Windows NT, or with Windows
- running on Macintosh systems. No compatibility is expected with
- Colorific and these operating systems.
-
- Colorific is compatible with all video cards. However,
- the following unusual video modes in some video drivers are known to be
- incompatible with Colorific:
-
- ATI Crystal Fonts Mode
- ATI 256-color mode with no palette option selected
- Binar AnyView
- Insignia SoftWindows for Macintosh
- Most "Auto Switch" color depth modes (allowing
- you to change resolution/color depth on the fly)
-
- Colorific has not been extensively tested with alternate
- Windows Desktops such as Norton Desktop, PC Tools, and
- similar programs. These are not recommended.
- If you use PC Tools, Sonnetech technical support can provide
- some work-arounds, but full compatibility is not assured.
-
- a. COREL DRAW and COREL PAINT:
-
- COREL sometimes interacts with Colorific to give unintended
- results.
-
- Contact Sonnetech Technical Support fax-back service for
- instructions about how to configure COREL for use with
- Colorific.
-
- b. Ami Pro
-
- There has been a report that color correction does not occur
- when using Colorific and Ami Pro. Contact Sonnetech Technical
- Support for availability timing for an update.
-
- 2.0.1 Colorific for Windows 95
-
- A different version of Colorific is available for Windows 95.
- Contact your monitor maker if you should have received the
- Windows 95 version instead of the Windows 3.1 version.
-
- Upgrades are also available from Sonnetech. Please register
- to receive special upgrade pricing. To receive an order form
- via fax, call (415) 957-9941 and request document #1003.
-

-
- 3.0 FOR BEST RESULTS, YOU MUST READ THIS
-
- The color rendering characteristics of each printer profile (also called
- "DCP" for Device Color Profile) are based on the state of the device as
- shipped by the vendor to Kodak, with the selections of media and device
- settings as specified in this ReadMe file.
-
- Although manufacturing variations from unit to unit are possible, which
- cannot be compensated for in device profiles, color shifts are more
- likely to result from use of different media or device settings from
- those specified.
-
- For instance, all DCP's for an inkjet printer assumes that YOU
- USE SPECIAL GLOSSY INKJET PAPER. Unless you use this type of paper,
- the colors from your inkjet will be dull. See section 3.0.1 below
- for paper types needed for ink jet printers. Also, see section
- 3.0.2 for a listing of special issues for each printer profile
- included on your master Colorific diskette.
-
- 3.0.1 WARNING: UNLESS YOU USE SPECIAL INKJET PAPER,
-
- COLOR MATCHING MAY BE POOR.
-
- There are several makers for this type of paper. We recommend
- Colorific-approved inkjet paper from IJ Technologies. As a gift
- for reading this readme file, call 1-800-356-6962 to request a
- FREE 5-sheet sampler pack.
-
- IJ Technologies: Colorific-approved and recommended:

-
- This paper is nice in that both matte and
- glossy finishes are available. And it works well
- with most color inkjet printers, including those
- from Canon and HP.
-
-
- Other good souces for special glossy ink jet paper include:
-
- Hewlett-Packard: HP 51636H LX Series Glossy Paper (8.5 x 11 inches)
- HP 51636H LX Series Glossy Paper (210 x 297 mm)
-
- Contact HP in the US at 800-538-8787
- Outside the US, contact HP in your country.
-
- This paper is available worldwide in computer
- stores. It works well with most color inkjet
- printers, including those from Canon.
-
- Rexham Graphics: RIJ4WHP Paper for HP Color Ink Jet Printers
- 8.5 x 11, 50 sheets
- RIJ4WC Paper for Canon Color Ink Jet Printers
- 8.5 x 11, 50 sheets
-
- Contact Rexham for European sizes and part
- numbers.
-
- Rexham Graphics, 28 Gaylord Street, South Hadley,
- MA, USA 01075-2894
- Tel. 413-536-7800
- FAX 413-536-4414
- Technical Support: 1-800-831-9551
-
- Not only does Rexham make a white bright
- specialty paper that works in virtually all
- ink jet color printers including the HP,
- Canon, and Apple, but they also offer a high
- quality white film (glossy) and overhead
- transparency film. Rexham media has a unique
- surface coating that controls absorption and
- keeps ink from bleeding or dulling, effectively
- allowing Colorific to match your screen colors
- to your printed output. Rexham also offers an
- entire line of wax thermal transfer media for
- most thermal transfer printers, and is constantly
- introducing new and innovative products.
-
- American Ribbon Ultra-Pearl Paper
- and Toner Co.:
- American Ribbon and Toner Co., 2895 W. Prospect Rd.
- Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA
- Tel. 305-584-2949
- Fax 305-733-0319
-
- This paper is inexpensive: $34.95 for 100 sheets as
- of September, 1994.
-
-
- For transparencies, please be aware that color matching may not
- be perfect. This is because the bulbs that light overhead
- projectors are missing much of the red spectrum to avoid
- creating heat, which can burn or melt the transparency
- material. So the color you see when you print on transparency
- material may not be the color you are able to project onto a
- screen.
-
- 3.0.2 Special Issues for Various Printer Device Color Profiles (DCPs)
-
- Below is the list of settings for each printer profile (called a
- Kodak "Device Color Profile," or "DCP") that might be on your
- disk. Not every DCP listed below will be included on your disk.
-
- The sections below contain information on how to set up your
- printer driver and printer to get the best color matching
- results. This data is provided by Kodak to describe the printer
- settings used when they created the DCP. Use these settings for
- adjusting your printer when color matching with Colorific:
-
- a. Generic CMYK
-
- Try using this DCP if your printer is NOT otherwise listed in
- Colorific's menus. This DCP will work well on many printers, but
- results will vary from printer to printer.
-
- If you are not satisfied with the results of this DCP, you need to
- order a DCP specifically for your printer from Kodak or Sonnetech.
- Contact Sonnetech at (415) 957-9941.
-
- b. All HP DeskJet with HP v3.x Printer Driver

- n. Canon CLC 500/550 & Kodak Coloredge 1550 Copier without linearization
- software:
-
- Device Name: CLC 500/550 (not linearized)

- This DCP is intended for use with a Kodak Coloredge 1550 (or Canon
- CLC500/550) color copier that has not been linearized with a 3rd
- party calibration package (e.g., EFI Calibrator or Southwest
- Software's Color Encore).
-
- This calibration is intended for use with the ColorQ print server
- system from Color Age, Inc, without Color Vantage calibration
- software; however, it can also be used on a copier driven by the
- Canon RIP, or the EFI Fiery RIP, or others, without linearization
- software. It may be advisable to adjust solid toner densities through
- the copier controls to achieve optimum results.
-
- (If you are using this printer with a controller that has been
- liniearized with the Efi Calibrator calibration package, you must

- 4.0 Applications using the Kodak Precision CMS
-
- Colorific creates a Kodak Precision (tm) monitor profile
- in your Precision database. This profile can be accessed
- by Kodak Precision-enabled applications such as
- PhotoStyler and Picture Publisher. Open the Kodak CMS
- from within your application, then choose the profile
- named for your monitor model.
-
- Detailed information about using Colorific with
- particular graphics applications is available from the
- Sonnetech faxback system. Call (415) 957-9941 from a
- fax machine phone to request a catalog of documents.
-
- See items #3.0, 3.0.1, and 3.0.2 above for other important
- information about how to configure Colorific for your
- printer.
-
- *******************************************************
-
- 5.0 Other Applications
-
- Detailed information about using Colorific with
- particular graphics applications is available from
- the Sonnetech fax-on-demand system. Call (415) 957-9941
- from a fax machine phone to request a catalog of documents.
-
- See items #3.0, 3.0.1, and 3.0.2 above for other important
- information about how to configure Colorific for your
- printer.
-
- *******************************************************
-
- 6.0 Hardware Requirements
-
- Colorific requires a 386 or better computer running Microsoft
- Windows 3.1 or 3.11 with at least 2.5 MB of disk space for
- installation.
-
- During operation, the Kodak Color Management System within
- Colorific will require up to 5 MB of free disk space as a
- temporary work area. You must be running Windows in 386 Enhanced
- mode with at a Windows permanent swap file on your hard disk of
- at least 10 MB. Colorific will work on all graphics boards in
- 16-color VGA mode and in higher color modes such as 256-color
- through 16.7 million-color modes. Different Colorific features
- are enabled on different graphics boards.
-
- NOTE: If you wish to change the Windows' display driver (i.e.
- from VGA to a special driver supplied with your video
- card or system), use the Windows' Setup icon within the
- Main Group in the Windows Program Manager.
-
- Or, exit Windows and change directories to the Windows
- subdirectory. At the C:\WINDOWS prompt, type SETUP and
- select the desired display driver.
-
- ***********************************************************************
-
- 7.0 Windows Graphics Cards/Warm White Option
-
- On some systems, Colorific offers you the ability to change the
- color balance of your monitor from what we call "Current White
- Point" (e.g., whatever white you normally see on your monitor)
- to "Warm (Paper White)" (e.g., a warmer, more paper white
- tone).
-
- This choice is OPTIONAL. Regardless of which monitor color
- balance you choose, Colorific will do a good job of matching
- colors between your screen and printer.
-
- This "Warm (Paper White)" color balance option is NEVER
- available if you are using the 16-color video mode supplied in
- the default Windows VGA driver.
-
- This "Warm (Paper White)" color balance option is ALMOST
- ALWAYS available if you are using the 256-color video mode
- offered with a driver designed for your specific video card.
- The only exceptions are:
-
- 1. Some S3-based video boards
- 2. Some cirrus logic-based video boards
- 3. Some ATI or #9 video boards
-
- NOTE: If you wish to change the Windows' display driver, see NOTE
- in Section 6.0 above.
-
- ***********************************************************************
-
- 8.0 Uninstalling Colorific
-
- To uninstall Colorific 1.x automatically, insert the
- Colorific 1.x installation disk in a floppy disk drive
- and choose Run from the Start menu. Type a:\setup (or
- b:\setup), just as you did when installing Colorific. At
- the second dialog box, you will given the option to
- Uninstall, Reinstall, or Exit -- choose Uninstall. The
- uninstall procedure will remove most Colorific files and
- will also edit Windows' SYSTEM.INI file so that Windows
- 95 can boot normally. To complete the uninstallation,
- delete files remaining in the Colorific folder (usually
- C:\HGC), if any.
-
- If for some reason you can not uninstall Colorific 1.x
- automatically, you can edit your SYSTEM.INI file
- manually to recover full use of Windows. Open your
- SYSTEM.INI file using a text editor such as DOS Edit
- or Windows' Notepad. (If you can run Windows, you can
- open SYSTEM.INI for editing simply by double-clicking
- on the file's icon in File Manager or Explorer.) Edit
- the file as follows:
-
- a. If you do NOT have Adobe Type Manager installed,
- find the lines in the [boot] section that begin
- with system.drv and hgc.system.drv. Most likely
- they will be:
-
- system.drv=C:\HGC\hgcsys.drv
- hgc.system.drv=system.drv
-
- Replace these lines with one line reading:
-
- system.drv=system.drv
-
- b. If you have Adobe Type Manager installed, you
- will find these lines in the [boot] section:
-
- system.drv=atmsys.drv
- atm.system.drv=C:\HGC\hgcsys.drv
- hgc.system.drv=system.drv
-
- Remove references to hgcsys.drv, making the lines
- read:
-
- system.drv=atmsys.drv
- atm.system.drv=system.drv
-
- After making the above changes to SYSTEM.INI, save the
- file. You will then be able to run Windows 95 in normal
- mode if you previously could not. Then, delete the
- C:\HGC directory and remove Colorific 1.x from your
- Programs menu, if necessary.
