  20.  **a. How to Play Chess**

  23.         There are many variations of the game of chess,
  24.         Chess Marvel is one variation. To start playing chess,
  25.         click on the piece you wish to move, and then click on
  26.         the destination you wish to move it to. Or, if you wish
  27.         for the computer to make the first move, click on the
  28.         'Move' button and the computer player will start the
  29.         game. Each player then takes turns moving their 16 chess
  30.         pieces across the board.
  31.  
  32.         The King can move to any adjacent empty square, or an
  33.         adjacent square occupied by an unprotected opposing piece.
  34.  
  35.         The Queen can move along the diagonal, horizontal, or
  36.         vertical in any direction over unoccupied squares. And
  37.         can capture an opposing piece by landing in its square.
  38.  
  39.         The Rook can be moved along the horizontal and
  40.         vertical in any direction over unoccupied squares. And
  41.         can capture an opposing piece by landing in its square.
  42.  
  43.         The Bishop can be moved along the diagonal in any
  44.         direction over unoccupied squares. And can capture an
  45.         opposing piece by landing in its square.
  46.  
  47.         The Knight moves in an L-shaped direction over squares
  48.         that may, or may not be occupied, capturing the opposing
  49.         piece in the square it lands on.
  50.  
  51.         A Pawn can move two squares its first move, but there
  52.         after it moves one square at a time. It can capture
  53.         opposing pieces on either diagonal square facing it.
  54.  
  55.         To win at chess you must either capture or checkmate
  56.         your opponent's king.
  57.  
  58.         Chess Marvel allows you to play at different skill
  59.         levels. At start-up, Chess Marvel plays at Novice
  60.         level. To change to a higher level, click on the
  61.         'Novice' button until it reaches a level you feel
  62.         comfortable with.

  64.         Chess Marvel also gives you the option of undoing
  65.         mistaken moves. To undo a move click on the 'Undo'
  66.         button.

  71.         To run Chess Marvel, you'll need the following system:

  73.                 An IBM-compatible, 486 or better computer
  74.                 Four Megabytes of RAM
  75.                 A VGA monitor
  76.                 Windows 3.1, or Windows 95
  77.                 Hard Disk with two Megabytes free
  78.                 Mouse

  80.         You'll have more fun with these recommended additions:

  88.         1. To get started with Chess Marvel on a hard disk:
  89.                 a. Insert the Chess Marvel disk in your
  90.                         floppy disk drive ('A', or 'B')
  91.                 b. From Windows 'run' A:\setup or B:\setup" and press
  92.                         Enter.
  93.                 c. Follow the screen directions.

  98.         To start the game, double click on the Chess Marvel
  99.         icon in Windows.

  101.  **2. Troubleshooting & Technical Support**

  104.         If you have a problem, chances are you can fix it without
  105.         needing to get help. Try the following:
  106.  
  107.         If the game says you have insufficient memory, or if it crashes,
  108.         try rebooting without loading any TSR programs, such as your
  109.         disk cache.
  110.  
  111.         If the screen is to dark to see, try turning up the brightness
  112.         on your monitor.
  113.  
  114.         If you are unable to fix your problems, try contacting us via

  116.         your computer configuration and what you were trying to do when
  117.         you encountered the problem. Also include any error messages
  118.         that were displayed.
