- ============
-
- You might be surprised, but when I was first introduced to computers, I
- failed miserably at understanding what they were all about. I got the
- big "F" in something called "Fortran," which was a language to
- "communicate" with the computer.
-
- In hindsight, my reasons for failing were the same as so many others today,
- including some of your own family members and friends, who wonder why you
- are so inclined to spend so much time with computers. We all think that
- there is this "magical" or "mystical" wizard or "brain" that will
- understand everything you do with the computer and that it can do
- everything for you as well!
-
- Ironically, it was the LACK OF USING a computer which finally helped
- me to understand them! I was taking a pre-college course for credit,
- in computers, at a small college in upstate New York and lightning
- from a bad storm damaged the DEC PDP-11 computer.
-
- Well, the course was not cancelled! Our instructor made us do all the
- homework problems by hand. We had to write the computer code and then
- step thru each statement from top to bottom to manually test it up.
- (Today, Software Engineers call that software walkthrus). He told us
- to change the "computer conditions (variables and memory)" as you step
- thru each computer statement.
-
- Bingo! It clicked! I finally realized that the computer only does
- what YOU tell it to do, line by line! Ever since that amazing
- revelation, I have mastered everything thrown in front of me when it
- comes to "Emulating" real life needs with the computer! I went on to
- learn 15 new computer languages and worked on close to 10 different
- computer hardware systems from micros to Cray computers in the course
- of 18 years.
-
- I tell this story to many who ask me if computer programming is hard
- to learn. It's the idea of communicating with the computer. Making
- it understand what you want to do - no more, no less.
-
- But there is another reason for this story. I find myself today, once
- again, relearning new things with computers and, in addition,
- relearning how to do old things using new methods! It's no longer just
- communicating with a COMPUTER now, but the idea of communicating with
- networks of computers, the client/server paradigm, multi-tasking,
- multi-threading, the Internet, Satelites, WireLess Computing, GUI,
- TAPI, MAPI, OOPS or Object Oriented Programming, etc. The list goes on
- and on!
-
- It's no longer just understand the computer from a STEP by STEP basis, but
- also consider the STEP by STEP actions of simultaneous applications
- running on other machines or devices!
-
- The whole idea of working with networking computers is the idea of
- "communications" and passing information from point A to point B. With
- the growth of the Internet and client/server systems, you will see
- a tremendous growth area in the BBS market. Alot of people feel the
- BBS is dead. On the contrary, I don't think so.
-
- What needs to be invented and learned is the idea of a "NETWORK
- LANGUAGE". How do I control other computers "thru" a network? Alot of
- people call this GroupWare or WorkFlow technology. Yes that's true,
- but a lot of this is based on older CLIENT/SERVER methodology where one
- computer requests information (Client) and another searches for it and
- sends it back (Server).
-
- One computer company called General Magic has spurred alot of interest
- in the area of a "Network Language" using ideas called "Agents". With
- General Magic software, you can send an "Agent" to another computer to
- do whatever you want. Maybe you can send an agent to a WEB site to
- search for information while you are sleeping? Or maybe you can send
- an agent to a BBS Fidonet Mailer to do any kind of operations you want
- from your office?
-
- Yes, you guessed it..."Fancy scripts!". The BBS market will grow
- tremendously in that area. You will see BBSs designed just so that
- they can act as an AGENT provider!
-
- I guess I can leave it at that with basically saying that this is
- definitely one area to which we are headed with our products under
- Windows 95/NT and the new Mustang Windows system, which I believe
- is going to be one of the most significant developments in the BBS
- and Internet Industry.
-
- I'll talk about that next time.

- ======================
-
- Shsssssh! Quiet! Project TERMINATOR has begun! What is TERMINATOR? It
- is Platinum Xpress for Windows!! Specifically written for Windows 95 and
- Mustang's new Windows BBS system, code named "ANNIHILATOR". There is alot
- of work to be done with this baby and I can't say much about this because
- of an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement), but I will say this! It is
- going to be a POWERFUL system! I know that this represents change for many
- but I can guarantee you will not be disappointed with ANNIHILATOR aka
- "Wildcat! 5.0" and Platinum Xpress for Windows!
-
- Platinum Xpress for Windows Price Structure
-
- Early Purchase PX Customer
- Retail until release Upgrade
- =======================================
-
- PX/WIN 2.0 (1 line) $245.00 $199.00 $50.00
- PX/WIN 2.0 (Unlimited) $395.00 $345.00 $99.00
-
-
- ALL PX/DOS Customers can upgrade to PX/WIN at a WHOPPING discount of over
- 70%! Advance orders are being taken NOW, so don't miss this opportunity to
- save BIG $$$ with the FIRST, 32bit Windows Frontend Mailer, that will bring
- Fidonet *specifically* for Wildcat! 5.0!
-
- Our annual upgrade support policy is based on 1 year of authorized free
- downloads. Your 1 year begins on your purchase date, with the exception
- of those who placed advance orders for PX/DOS and PX/WIN, prior to their
- Official Release. These customers receive 1 year of authorized d/l access,
- beginning on the date of the Official Release. After one year, the renewal
- price for continued download access from the BBS is:
-
- Annual renewal
- Price
- ==============
- PX Single Line $35.00
- PX Multi-line $70.00
-
- The annual renewal price is for version to version. In other words, PX
- for Windows is an entirely new product, thus its annual cost does not
- include the option of PX/DOS download access, but d/l access for PX/WIN
- only for one full year. Conversely, if you own PX/DOS, your present
- download access is for PX/DOS only. If you want PX/WIN download access,
- you must purchase that version. If you want to maintain both the DOS and
- WINDOWS version, you must include the renewal cost for both.
-
-
- 4. PXUUCP - New Internet/UUCP Module Development Commences!
- ===========================================================
-
- The long anticipated PXUUCP, our Internet module for PX/DOS, has been
- in the works for many months. We simply were not able to maintain the
- development schedule we originally projected with PXUUCP. This happened
- both because of the complexity of PXUUCP and our need to make sure that
- it performs as well as the rest of Platinum Xpress and also because of
- the start of development on Platinum Xpress for Windows.
-
- This does not mean that PX/DOS is taking a back seat to PX/WIN nor that
- Santronics will be abandoning PX/DOS or our many customers in favor of
- the Windows product. Just the opposite. PXUUCP development is back in
- full session now and we plan to continue to develop and support PX/DOS as
- long as our customers still find it useful!
-
- It will happen pretty fast since a lot is already completed! So hold on
- to your hat...we will have this puppy completed this YEAR!
-
- - PXUUCP beta testing will begin mid-November.
-
- - Estimated Release Date - End of year.
-

- line of the text. New Internet tokens for replying too! Messages can now
- be displayed using our traditional, 2-line OPX format or the 1-line QWK
- format and a new scrolling sidebar indicator displays percent of message
- read.

- the market that provides *direct* internet support, so if you are on that
- Super Highway, Xpress's automated addressing will move you right into the
- Fast Lane! If you are routing Internet mail via the Fido gateways, Silver
