  17. You might be surprised, but when I was first introduced to computers, I
  18. failed miserably at understanding what they were all about.  I got the
  19. big "F" in something called "Fortran," which was a language to
  20. "communicate" with the computer.
  21.  
  22. In hindsight, my reasons for failing were the same as so many others today,
  23. including some of your own family members and friends, who wonder why you
  24. are so inclined to spend so much time with computers. We all think that
  25. there is this "magical" or "mystical" wizard or "brain" that will
  26. understand everything you do with the computer and that it can do
  27. everything for you as well!
  28.  
  29. Ironically, it was the LACK OF USING a computer which finally helped
  30. me to understand them!  I was taking a pre-college course for credit,
  31. in computers, at a small college in upstate New York and lightning
  32. from a bad storm damaged the DEC PDP-11 computer.
  33.  
  34. Well, the course was not cancelled!  Our instructor made us do all the
  35. homework problems by hand.  We had to write the computer code and then
  36. step thru each statement from top to bottom to manually test it up.
  37. (Today, Software Engineers call that software walkthrus).  He told us
  38. to change the "computer conditions (variables and memory)" as you step
  39. thru each computer statement.
  40.  
  41. Bingo!  It clicked!  I finally realized that the computer only does
  42. what YOU tell it to do, line by line!  Ever since that amazing
  43. revelation, I have mastered everything thrown in front of me when it
  44. comes to "Emulating" real life needs with the computer!  I went on to
  45. learn 15 new computer languages and worked on close to 10 different
  46. computer hardware systems from micros to Cray computers in the course
  47. of 18 years.
  48.  
  49. I tell this story to many who ask me if computer programming is hard
  50. to learn.  It's the idea of communicating with the computer.  Making
  51. it understand what you want to do - no more, no less.
  52.  
  53. But there is another reason for this story.  I find myself today, once
  54. again, relearning new things with computers and, in addition,
  55. relearning how to do old things using new methods!  It's no longer just
  56. communicating with a COMPUTER now, but the idea of communicating with
  57. networks of computers, the client/server paradigm, multi-tasking,
  58. multi-threading, the Internet, Satelites, WireLess Computing, GUI,
  59. TAPI, MAPI, OOPS or Object Oriented Programming, etc.  The list goes on
  60. and on!
  61.  
  62. It's no longer just understand the computer from a STEP by STEP basis, but
  63. also consider the STEP by STEP actions of simultaneous applications
  64. running on other machines or devices!
  65.  
  66. The whole idea of working with networking computers is the idea of
  67. "communications" and passing information from point A to point B.  With
  68. the growth of the Internet and client/server systems, you will see
  69. a tremendous growth area in the BBS market.  Alot of people feel the
  70. BBS is dead.  On the contrary, I don't think so.
  71.  
  72. What needs to be invented and learned is the idea of a "NETWORK
  73. LANGUAGE".  How do I control other computers "thru" a network?  Alot of
  74. people call this GroupWare or WorkFlow technology.  Yes that's true,
  75. but a lot of this is based on older CLIENT/SERVER methodology where one
  76. computer requests information (Client) and another searches for it and
  77. sends it back (Server).
  78.  
  79. One computer company called General Magic has spurred alot of interest
  80. in the area of a "Network Language" using ideas called "Agents".  With
  81. General Magic software, you can send an "Agent" to another computer to
  82. do whatever you want.  Maybe you can send an agent to a WEB site to
  83. search for information while you are sleeping?  Or maybe you can send
  84. an agent to a BBS Fidonet Mailer to do any kind of operations you want
  85. from your office?
  86.  
  87. Yes, you guessed it..."Fancy scripts!".  The BBS market will grow
  88. tremendously in that area.  You will see BBSs designed just so that
  89. they can act as an AGENT provider!
  90.  
  91. I guess I can leave it at that with basically saying that this is
  92. definitely one area to which we are headed with our products under
  93. Windows 95/NT and the new Mustang Windows system, which I believe
  94. is going to be one of the most significant developments in the BBS
  95. and Internet Industry.

  116. 2. Platinum Xpress V1.1

  119. Platinum Xpress v1.1 represents a major maintenance release for the
  120. powerful frontend system for Wildcat!  Some of the major enhancements
  121. and new features include improvements of the mail tossing and packing
  122. operations, with enhanced detection of duped and grundged mail, superb
  123. operations under OS/2, DESQview and Windows, new Network Management
  124. features, industry first Enhanced Round Robin (ERR) polling, improved fax
  125. server support and many other new features such as a screen saver.  Of
  126. course, many bugs were killed as well!  PX v1.1 represents an even more
  127. solid FidoNet Frontend System for small to large nodes!

  202. for Windows is an entirely new product, thus its annual cost does not
  203. include the option of PX/DOS download access, but d/l access for PX/WIN
  204. only for one full year.  Conversely, if you own PX/DOS, your present
  205. download access is for PX/DOS only.  If you want PX/WIN download access,
  206. you must purchase that version.  If you want to maintain both the DOS and

  210. 4. PXUUCP - New Internet/UUCP Module Development Commences!

  213. The long anticipated PXUUCP, our Internet module for PX/DOS, has been
  214. in the works for many months.  We simply were not able to maintain the
  215. development schedule we originally projected with PXUUCP.  This happened
  216. both because of the complexity of PXUUCP and our need to make sure that
  217. it performs as well as the rest of Platinum Xpress and also because of
  218. the start of development on Platinum Xpress for Windows.
  219.  
  220. This does not mean that PX/DOS is taking a back seat to PX/WIN nor that
  221. Santronics will be abandoning PX/DOS or our many customers in favor of
  222. the Windows product.  Just the opposite.  PXUUCP development is back in
  223. full session now and we plan to continue to develop and support PX/DOS as
  224. long as our customers still find it useful!

  226. It will happen pretty fast since a lot is already completed!  So hold on
  227. to your hat...we will have this puppy completed this YEAR!

  234. ================

  236. August 31, 1995 marked the Official Release of our flagship Silver Xpress
  237. Mail System, Version 5.4 for Wildcat! 4.x, PCBoard 15.2x, ProBoard 2.1x and
  238. RA 2.x.  This latest version also includes a new look and feel for the
  239. Xpress Administrator program (XPADM), sysop limits on Vacation Mail, faster
  240. mail scanning/bundling and assorted other enhancements.

  242. Official Door releases will follow shortly for Maximus 3.0, RBBS and
  243. OPUS.

  245. We also released the latest version of our ever popular Silver Xpress
  246. Offline Mail Reader.  The Version 4.3 release incorporates some terrific
  247. new Internet features including crossposting of newsgroup mail to the
  248. Internet email conference with completely automated addressing inserted
  249. in the correct fields, thus eliminating any addressing info on the first
  250. line of the text.  New Internet tokens for replying too!  Messages can now
  251. be displayed using our traditional, 2-line OPX format or the 1-line QWK
  252. format and a new scrolling sidebar indicator displays percent of message
  253. read.
