  6. The problem - You need to send a file via E-mail to someone on Compuserve,
  7. MCI, Internet - wherever, only the file is a ZIP or program file and you
  8. can't "ATTACH" a file that way... and snail mail is just TOO slow.
  9.  
  10.        WILLY WANTS IT NOW!
  11.  
  12. Willy will turn the file into a text file which you can then send as a 
  13. document.  I developed Willy because I needed to send program updates to a
  14. customer in Czechoslovakia named Willy.  He had access to MCI Mail only.
  15.  
  16. Here's the steps to using Willy.
  17.  
  18. 1. Willy the document.
  19.       From the DOS prompt       WILLY Filename.ext   /B:packetsize
  20.         where Filename and ext are the names of your file.  This can be
  21.         a ZIP file, an EXE program file, or a document.  Willy don't care.
  22.         Willy will create a file called WILLY001.BAS
  23.  
  24.    The packetsize switch, /B: is used to specify the maximum file size
  25.    to use when creating Willy files.  If you do not specify, the maximum
  26.    file size will be 30,000 per file.  Once Willy finishes, it will tell
  27.    you that WILLY consists of WILLY001.BAS - WILLYxxx.BAS.  You will 
  28.    always have a WILLY001.BAS and a WILLY002.BAS.

  30. 3. Log onto AOL.  Choose send mail and address the mail as normal.  Choose
  31.    File - Open - Choose the document.  Choose Edit - Select All - Copy.
  32.    Place the cursor in the message area of the E-mail windows.  Choose
  33.    Edit - Paste to put the Willy001.BAS file into the message portion of
  34.    the E-mail document.

  36. 4. Send it.  
  37.  
  38. 5. When your recipient receives the document, he can use the
  39.    QBASIC included with DOS to run the program and recreate your file.
  40.    Instructions are included in comments at the top of the file, but here
  41.    they are again.

  43.    Save the document as WILLY001.BAS
  44.    From the DOS prompt:
  45.     
  46.                    QBASIC   WILLY001.BAS
  47.                    Use the DELETE key to remove any header information
  48.                    which is above the "***** NOTE *****" line.
  49.                    PRESS F5
  50.                    
  51.                    Type in the complete path and file name for the new
  52.                    file, or press ENTER to save the default filename
  53.                    (the same one you created it from) in the current
  54.                    directory.
  55.  
  56.                    Type     Alt F   X     to exit to DOS.
  57.  
  58. 6.  That's it.  When it absolutely positively has to be there right now...
  59.     Don't Fed-Ex it. - WILLY it.

  61.                             RELEASE NOTES

  65. WinWilly is now included as a part of the package.  This program allows you
  66. to create your WILLY file from within Windows.  It is written in
  67. Visual BASIC ver. 2.0.  The Visual BASIC runtime library, VBRUN200.DLL must
  68. be in your \Windows\System directory to use this module.

  72. Willy will now ask for the file name and path before writing out the
  73. file, allowing the receiver to specify where the file should go.

  77. Willy will now create files of any size allowing you to specify the maximum
  78. number of characters to include in each packet.  The default packet size
  79. is 30,000 characters (the maximum for AOL) but you can set any size which
  80. your Internet gateway can handle.  The first file, WILLY001.BAS will be
  81. the program to recreate your document, and each of the other files,
  82. WILLY002.BAS, WILLY003.BAS, etc. will contain the "willied" file.

  84. Willy now uses a compression scheme comparable to the scheme used by
  85. UUCP, the Unix equivalent to Willy.  This compresses the file while still
  86. maintaining a file which can be sent as a document (no control or graphics
  87. characters).

  89. LIMITATIONS:  There is a 32k limit on the size of files which may be sent
  90. in one E-mail packet through Internet.  This limitation applies to all
  91. files sent to people who are not members of AOL. (poor benighted souls).
  92. If your file is greater than 32k in size, Willy now automatically splits
  93. it in chunks and recreates the entire file on the other end (and in the 
  94. right order) to recreate the file...

  96. By all means, you should ZIP your file before you WILLY it to help conserve
  97. space.  Because of the fact that all WILLY files must be able to squeeze
  98. through the INTERNET with no problems, all files are larger than the 
  99. original unzipped version.

  148. WILLY is not, nor has ever been, public domain or free
  149. software.   The commercial, registered version of WILLY may
  150. not be duplicated  other than for backup purposes. A
  151. registered copy of WILLY must be treated like a book, in
  152. that the same registered copy of WILLY may not be used in
  153. more than one computer at the same time, just as a book may
  154. not be read by more than one person at the same time
  155. (without making an illegal copy).  Users are granted a
  156. limited license to use the User Supported, trial version of
  157. WILLY for a limited evaluation period of up to 45 days, in
  158. order to determine if it suits their needs. Any other use of
  159. WILLY or use past this period requires registration.  All
  160. users are granted a limited license to copy the User
  161. Supported version of WILLY only for the purpose of allowing
  162. others to try it, subject to the above restrictions as well
  163. as these:

  178.               REGISTRATION/ORDERING INFORMATION

  180. Registering WILLY allows you to use the product after the
  181. trial period. Registered WILLY users get the current copy of
  182. WILLY on disk along with their own serial number, mailed
  183. notification of major WILLY updates, and priority when
  184. calling for WILLY Software support.  (we guarantee no
  185. support to unregistered users). Most importantly, registered
  186. users know they are helping to make sure that high-quality
  187. software like WILLY continues to be sold in this low cost
  188. way.  WILLY registration costs $15 US, and includes
  189. 'registered' copy of WILLY on  disk.  An evaluation disk 
  190. with the current  copy of WILLY  on it is also available for
  191. $7 US.  This is to  be used to try out WILLY, and does not 
  192. include  registration (the right to use WILLY after the
  193. evaluation period).  The fee covers the cost of diskette(s)
  194. and handling.   Payment may be in the form of check,  money
  195. order, or with a VISA card.  We also accept corporate
