  3. │THE HYNEK RATING SYSTEM                                                      │

  5. │As a tribute to Dr. Hynek, I have proposed that his matrix of                │
  6. │Strangeness vs. Probability be effectuated and calibrated as outlined        │
  7. │below, and named "the Hynek Scale" or "the Hynek Rating System" in his       │
  8. │honor.                                                                       │
  9. │.                                                                            │
  10. │S: Strangeness                                                               │
  11. │The "Strangeness" factor of a case description shall be rated from 1 to      │
  12. │5 as follows:                                                                │
  13. │.                                                                            │
  14. │    1 - Explained or Explainable                                             │
  15. │    2 - Probably Explainable, with more data                                 │
  16. │    3 - Possibly Explainable, but with elements of strangeness               │
  17. │    4 - Strange; Does not conform with known principles                      │
  18. │    5 - Highly Strange; Definitely indicative of intelligent guidance        │
  19. │.                                                                            │
  20. │Examples:                                                                    │
  21. │    S1 - Aircraft, meteor, etc.                                              │
  22. │    S2 - Experimental aircraft; planet or star                               │
  23. │    S3 - Slow, low flying objects in formation                               │
  24. │    S4 - BOL (Ball of Light Phenomena); physical traces                      │
  25. │    S5 - Close Encounters, Abductions, etc.                                  │
  26. │.                                                                            │
  27. │P: Probability                                                               │
  28. │The "Probability" factor of a case relates to the credibility, number        │
  29. │and separation of witnesses and/or the soundness of evidence gathered.       │
  30. │It shall be rated from 1 to 5 as follows:                                    │
  31. │.                                                                            │
  32. │    1 - Not Credible or Sound                                                │
  33. │    2 - Unreliable; Smacks of Hoax                                           │
  34. │    3 - Somewhat credible or indeterminate                                   │
  35. │    4 - Credible; Sound                                                      │
  36. │    5 - Highly Credible, leaving almost no doubt                             │
  37. │.                                                                            │
  38. │Examples:                                                                    │
  39. │    P1 - Known Hoaxer or UFO "Flake"; Hoax Photo                             │
  40. │    P2 - Repeat Witness; Conflicting Testimony                               │
  41. │    P3 - Standard, first-time witness; slight radiation reading              │
  42. │    P4 - Multiple witnesses; pilot; clear photo                              │
  43. │    P5 - National Figure; Multiple independent witnesses; videotape          │
  44. │.                                                                            │
  45. │The composite Hynek Rating of a case shall consist of the combined S &       │
  46. │P factors, stated as Sn/Pn, e.g. S3/P5; except that cases with an S          │
  47. │factor of 1 shall simply be stated as S1.                                    │

  49. │Examples using recent or famous cases:                                       │
  50. │    S1 - Wickenburg, AZ, July 10 (explanation:Mars)                          │
  51. │    S5/P1 - Billy Meier                                                      │
  52. │    S2/P5 - X-shaped UFO, Petaluma, CA  May 28                               │
  53. │    S4/P5 - Brazilian "Ping Pong Balls"                                      │
  54. │    S5/P4 - Betty & Barney Hill                                              │
  55. │    S4/P4 - Lubbock Lights                                                   │
  56. │    S5/P5 - MedEvac Helicopter ("Coyne" Case)                                │
  57. │    S3/P2 - Delphos                                                          │
  58. │    S4/P2 - Anything published in SAUCER SMEAR                               │
  59. │.                                                                            │
  60. │Discussion:                                                                  │
  61. │I believe this rating system will be a useful tool to investigators who      │
  62. │wish to narrow their focus to the most promising cases. It is not my         │
  63. │intention that any one group "stake a claim" to this system; rather,         │
  64. │I'd like to see several groups or investigators rate cases according to      │
  65. │their own view, merely using this system as a standard.                      │
  66. │.                                                                            │
  67. │The rating of a particular case may, indeed perhaps should, change from time │
  68. │time as new evidence is gathered.                                            │
