- Introduction to the RemoteAccess Newsletter (RANews)
-
- Hello, and welcome to the RemoteAccess Newsletter Prototype edition!
- This newsletter will basically give you an idea as to what you can expect in
- the following issues. Most of our monthly columns are described in detail over
- the next few sections. The newsletter will either be published monthly or bi-
- monthly depending on the response of this issue. Therefore, if you would enjoy
- seeing future editions, please drop us a line in either the RemoteAccess
- Support Echo (Fidonet), or call our BBS's (see Contacting the Authors).
-
- I would also like to take this oppertunity to invite any RemoteAccess
- SysOp who would like to be involved with the newsletter to send me netmail. We
- still need some people to write articles on a wide variety of RemoteAccess
- related topics. Once again, we hope you enjoy looking over this issue, and
- your comments are always welcome.
-
- Take care,
- Brandon Whitten, Editor
-
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- Editorial
-
- This area will be devoted to setting up the rest of the issue. In this
- column, we will make general announcements, editorial comments, our personal
- suggestions, etc.
-
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- Software Updates
-
- Each month, many programs and utilities are released through the
- Shareware/Freeware concept. Many types from helpful chat programs, message
- editors, door games, sysop utilities, caller lists, etc., are published, and
- hardly any notifications is made about their existance.
-
- In the RemoteAccess Newsletter, we will search high and low, under rocks
- and between our toes to find the latest list of utilities, a description of
- eachm and where to get 'em. Each utility we list will have undergone massive
- and extensive testing at our labratories (i.e., our own BBS's) to ensure that
- they will run on different types of systems, and what requirements that each
- utility needs.
-
- Any RemoteAccess Utility authors out there can inform us of your latest
- release, so we can insure that they will be listed in each newsletter. To
- really make sure your software gets reviewed, you can crash the latest copy
- (registered or not, your call) to any of our Support BBS's.
-
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- Questions and Answers
-
- This column will be dedicated to users questions. The question can be on
- any subject relating to RemoteAccess. If we do not know the answer to your
- question, we will try to find an answer, and if we can't, we'll put it in the
- newsletter anyway for others to try and solve.
-
- There is only a few requirements:
-
- 1. Please submit all questions or answers through netmail or in a
- message on any of the Support BBS's. (See Contacting the
- Authors).
-
- 2. If your question is *completely* off topic, don't expect a
- response.
-
- We hope to share some really helpful advice in this column, and as in all
- columns, your participation and suggestions are VERY important!
-
- To get this started, I've been seeing a lot of question in the RA_SUPPORT
- echo wondering about how to install various protocols into RemoteAccess. Well,
- I did a little digging, and here's what I came up with:

- Monthly RemoteAccess BBS Reviews
-
- This column will be devoted to review of selected RemoteAccess BBS's.
- Each month, we will randomnly pick two boards from our RemoteAccess Nationwide
- BBS List and call them up. We will then log in, look around for a few minutes,
- check out the message, and file areas, etc, and log off. Once we log off, a
- complete report will be written on the system including system ratings and
- overall look and feel. The report will appear in this column. Remember, we
- can only call BBS's that are listed in our National RemoteAccess BBS List, so
- please see that article for more information on how your system can take part.
-
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- Getting your BBS in the National RemoteAccess BBS List
-
- In the coming months, we hope to compile a nationwide RemoteAccess BBS
- List. If you would like your BBS published in this list, and included in
- every third edition of the RemoteAccess Newsletter, please read the
- following:
-
- Requirements - You must be running a copy of RemoteAccess (duh!). You must
- also operate your BBS 24 hours daily. Nope, it can't be a
- "kiddy board" - one of those BBS's that is up from the time
- you get home from school, and goes down when Daddy gets
- home.
-
- Instructions - If you meet the above requirements, and would like to be
- included in our list, please send your name, BBS name, baud
- rates supported, Fidonet address (if applicable), and no
- more than three lines of text (80 characters or less per
- line) with a general description of your BBS. OR, you can
- use the included form in this newsletter (BBSLIST.FRM).
-
- After you complete the requested information, you can either send your
- form via netmail, file attach, or upload it to any one of the Support BBS's.
-
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- Bug Reports
-
- This column will be dedicated primarily to bug reports on software,
- utilities, doors, BBS Software, etc. If you do find a bug in something, try to
- send us a screen capture of it, and an explanation of what was going on when
- the bug happened.
-
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- Contacting the Authors
-
- If you would like to get into contact with us, you've got a mass-array of
- ways of doing this. You can either:
-
- 1. Send a netmail to me at Fidonet: 1:3672/10
-
- 2. Call my BBS and leave a message to me. The number is 601-234-2963
-
- 3. FAX in your message to me. Fax number is 601-234-2963
-
- 4. Leave a message in the RemoteAccess areas.
-
- If you would like to become a part of the RemoteAccess Newsletter, drop me
- a line with some references or crap like that, and we'll see what we can do!
