  22. % This file is sent out regularly in the FILEBONE file area.  The Filebone is a
  23. % group of nodes who provide a file distribution service.  This list contains
  24. % only information on the File Distribution Nets (FDNs) carried by the Filebone.
  25. % For listing of those FDNs which are known to be privately distributed, please
  26. % see FILEBONE.NO
  27. % 
  28. % For more information about the Filebone contact any of the Filebone Hubs
  29. % (see below) or try the FILE_MOVERS echomail area, available from any of the
  30. % Filebone Hubs.  To find out more about currently available software used for
  31. % automated file transfers try the FILE_ECHO echomail area, available on the
  32. % Backbone.

  34. % To find out more about a particular FDN please request the information file
  35. % listed for that FDN and/or contact the FDN head.  Quite often there are also
  36. % related echomail areas available on the Backbone.  Many of the FDNs post
  37. % notices of newly hatched files in the FILE_REQ echomail area, available on
  38. % the Backbone.  When you pick up a FDN through the Filebone, it is considered 
  39. % "good form" to drop the FDN head a note.
  40. %
  41. % If you are interested in setting up a feed for any of the FDNs carried on
  42. % the Filebone please contact any of the Filebone Hubs (see below).  The
  43. % Filebone does not observe geographical restrictions, so you are free to
  44. % establish a link with any of the Hubs.  Many of the Filebone Hubs have cost-
  45. % sharing plans so be sure to ask about this when you contact them.

  47. % If you are a FDN head and are interested in having the Filebone carry your
  48. % FDN, please contact the Filebone Technical Coordinator, Jim Watson, at
  49. % 1:170/610.  Please supply him with the type of information you see listed 
  50. % here for each of the FDNs along with estimates of the number of nodes in 
  51. % your FDN, and the number of bytes of files per month.

  61. % The following format is used to describe each of the File Distribution Nets.
  62. %
  63. %     Kywd FileTag   Level Flags  Description
  64. %     ---- --------  ----  -----  --------------------------------------------
  65. %     Area XYZ_GIF   0     !      XYZ: GIF files for the XYZ program
  66. %
  67. %         "Area"  - Used by RAID (thanks George!) and similar programs to
  68. %                   denote the beginning of an file area definition.
  69. %
  70. %         FileTag - Name of area that files will be sent under.  Similar to an
  71. %                   echomail areatag, but limited to 8 characters or less.
  72. %
  73. %         Level   - Security level (0-4096) used to protect this area
  74. %
  75. %         Flags   - Access flags (see below) to control who's allowed to feed,
  76. %                   and what type of echo it is.
  77. %
  78. %         Desc    - FDN abbreviation followed by a description of the area's
  79. %                   contents.
  80. %
  81. % There are five types of access flags:
  82. %
  83. %     "!" - Filebone distribution.  Areas marked with this flag are carried by
  84. %           the Filebone and can found at any Filebone Hub site (see below).
  85. %
  86. %     "." - Open distribution.  While unrestricted in nature, these areas are
  87. %           *NOT* distributed by the Filebone.  Although many Filebone Hubs do
  88. %            in fact carry them, you may be forced to find your own feed.
  89. %
  90. %     "*" - Hatching is allowed by *any* node attached to the area.  This flag
  91. %           may be mixed with any of the others.  If an area does not contain
  92. %           this flag, then you may not hatch directly into it.  There will
  93. %           either be a "return channel" provided or you must send your
  94. %           submission directly to the FDN head or other listed site.
  95. %
  96. %     "&" - Do not send this area to any downlinks.  This flag usually 
  97. %           indicates that an area is a "return channel" to be used for 
  98. %           submitting files to a FDN head for distribution.  Be sure to 
  99. %           remove it in your TIC.CFG for your uplink *only*.  This flag
  100. %           should only be used in conjunction with the "*" flag.
  101. %
  102. % ( all  )  Restricted distribution.  These areas are privately distributed 
  103. % (others)  and are *NOT* carried by the Filebone.  You must contact the FDN 
  104. %           head to obtain a feed.
  105. %
  106. % This format is based on the TIC and RAID programs.  Indeed, you can directly
  107. % use this file as part of your RAID config file.  For example, the following
  108. % DOS command could be used to create your new RAID.CFG file from the weekly
  109. % FILEBONE.NA file along with prefix and suffix files (RAID.BEG and RAID.END)
  110. % containing your personal configuration information:
