- │ A FEW ECHO AREA RULES │
- │ │
- │ For those unfamiliar with message "echos", they are national conferences │
- │ in which a message entered on Frontier is "echoed" to all of the other │
- │ BBS's that carry that conference. What you type here on Frontier is seen │
- │ in Canada, Washington, Illinois, Arizona, etc. Some echos are carried │
- │ internationally. You will occasionally see messages from as far away as │
- │ Australia, Denmark, or Thailand. │
- │ │
- │ Because of the huge geographic areas covered, and because the sysop's │
- │ pay the costs to move messages across these areas, certain basic rules │
- │ should be observed: │
- │ │
- │ 1. Messages should NEVER deviate from the stated topic (i.e. Don't │
- │ post a message about Atari computers in the Writing echo.) Either │
- │ post the message where it belongs or, if you can't find the correct │
- │ message board, don't post it at all. If you have questions about │
- │ whether or not something belongs, ask your sysop ON A LOCAL BOARD! │
- │ 2. Posted messages should only be of wide interest. Nobody in Idaho │
- │ cares if you are going out to dinner this Friday night. Actually, │
- │ we're all quite happy for you (you should probably get out more │
- │ often), but there's no reason to spread your plans country wide. │
- │ │
- │ 3. If at all possible, keep "flames" to a minimum -- like NONE. Often, │
- │ in the heat of a discussion, you may read messages from someone who │
- │ has an opinion totally different from yours. Feel free to discuss │
- │ the difference of opinion but don't call him or her names or speak │
- │ poorly of their parentage. Again, sysop's do not wish to spend │
- │ their money to carry name-calling sessions across the country. │
- │ │
- │ 4. Under NO circumstances should you post a message like the standard │
- │ "Hey, Doode, anybody got any great warez to trade?" Don't even │
- │ think of sending this kind of cutesy stuff out. Doing so will get │
- │ you, and eventually Frontier, kicked off the echo. Most moderators │
- │ send NetMail direct to the SYSOP's, so if any messages slip by, I │
- │ will still find out about any problems. │
- │ 5. It should not have to be said, but: There should NEVER be messages │
- │ posted about HACKING/CRACKING PROTECTED SOFTWARE. The same goes for │
- │ messages about telephone, credit card, and chain letter fraud. │
- │ │
- │ 6. Do not post BBS notices or advertisements on the FidoNet echos. This │
- │ includes the Communications echo -- often called the COMM echo. You │
- │ will get nothing but rude replies in return. │
- │ │
- │ 7. Do not post messages containing ANSI codes or the upper 128 ASCII │
- │ characters even though it may make your message look nicer. These │
- │ codes cause problems on many FidoNet systems and your message will │
- │ get deleted rather than delivered. │
- │ │
- │ 8. If you feel a message is out of line or totally off topic and the │
- │ writer should be admonished, please ignore the message. The echo │
- │ moderator will take care of the problem and probably already has. │
- │ Normally the moderator will handle it privately via NetMail. If the │
- │ message is really objectionable, please let the SYSOP know so the │
- │ message can be deleted from the local message base. │
- │ │
- │ Using the echos can be a great deal of fun. Some are so busy that the │
- │ messages pour in at the rate of 100 or more a day -- far more than any │
- │ local-only message board could achieve. So enjoy them. But please, │
- │ follow the rules above. And, if you have any questions, feel free to │
- │ ask here on Frontier only!. │
- │ Thanks, Jerry Woody │
- │ │
- │ WHAT IS AN ECHO? │
- │ │
- │ An Echo message is simply a message that is relayed to many other BBS's │
- │ that participate in that particular Echo topic. This is a great way to │
- │ share ideas & comments with far more people than would be possible with │
- │ a local system. For example, you can ask a technical question in the │
- │ Lotus 123 echo about a problem that you're having and receive replies │
- │ from all over the country. The same is true with the Humor echo or the │
- │ Chatter echos. All of these echos have specifics topics that they │
- │ cover. Please do not deviate from the covered topics. │
- │ │
- │ The message that you post is sent to a central processing board, or HUB, │
- │ every night and then forwarded to all areas of the country for all to │
- │ see. The responses that others post are returned the same way. It │
- │ usually takes a two or three days for a response to arrive back to │
- │ Frontier from New York, so be patient. This is also why the message │
- │ dates will frequently appear out of sequence. │
- │ │
- │ If this all sounds complicated to you, relax, after you post a message, │
- │ the computer does the rest. │
- │ │

- ║ Please keep in mind that EchoMail and NetMail are privileges ║
- ║ furnished because SYSOP's all over the country happen to like ║
- ║ you and feel that open communications is very important. ║
