- II. Introduction.
-
- NewsDoor is an external BBS program which handles the showing of
- newsflashes or bulletins on a RemoteAccess 2.0x, SuperBBS 1.1x
- or QuickBBS 2.75 BBS.
-
- What puts NewsDoor apart from other bulletin programs is that
- NewsDoor doesn't make bulletins. It only shows them. The
- bulletins are stored as messages in a standard Hudson
- messagebase, maintainance is done using you nightly messagebase
- maintainance and entering new flashes is done through your
- favourite message-editor.
-
- Here is a list of features:
-
- ■ NewsDoor is multiline aware
- ■ It supports a number of multitaskers like DesqView,
- OS/2, Windows and PC-MOS.
- ■ NewsDoor has multilanguage support.
- ■ NewsDoor works with QBBS, SBBS and RA 2.0x.
- ■ Users can be asked if they want to read new bulletins
- or they can be forced. Forcing also has a maximal
- number of forced bulletins so the users don't have to
- read hundreds of old bulletins.
- ■ NewsDoor can delay before the user can press continue
- or stop reading.
- ■ NewsDoor uses the lastread pointers to show only new
- bulletins.
- ■ Username, mailarea etc. are all installable.
- ■ Automatic translation of high-ascii to low-ascii when
- needed.
-
- Because of the usage of the messagebase, you can share a
- newsarea with other nodes, force the users of offline readers to
- read them too, send them to your points etc.
- III. How to install NewsDoor.
-
- Before you install NewsDoor in your BBS, you first have to
- decide which messagearea to use for the newsflashes. Theoretical
- it is possible to share an area with some other usage, but in
- general you probably like to dedicate an area for this usage.
-
- You also want to decide on a username to use. Default for
- NewsDoor is "ALL", messages to all are shown, the others are
- ignored.
-
- The most basic installation of NewsDoor is from a Type 7
- menuentry with an parameter line:
-
- <Path>\NEWS.EXE -AREA:<AreaNr>
-
- for a single node system or
-
- <Path>\NEWS.EXE -AREA:<AreaNr> -P:*P
-
- for a multiline system. Using these commandlines, NewsDoor will
- show all the messages to ALL in the <AreaNr> area. The user just
- gets the first flash but can stop reading immediately.
-
- Here is a list of the other possible parameters:
-
- -ASK Ask the user if he wants to read the new flashes.
- If there are new flashes, the default choice will
- be Yes, otherwise it will be No.
-
- -FORCE[:<Count>]
- Force a user to read new flashes. If you keep
- many flashes, using the extra :<count> would be a
- good idea. Otherwise a new user will have to read
- ALL the flashes available. For example:
- -FORCE Forces the user to read ALL the flashes
- available.
- -FORCE:3 Forces the user only to read the last 3
- new flashes. After that it's optional.
-
- -T:<Time> This is a leftover from previous version. You can
- use it to limit the time available in the door.
- Normally you would use it as -T:*T, but it is not
- needed anymore.
-
- -N:<Node> If you don't use the new (RA 2.0x) TASK
- environment variable, you need a -N:*N on your
- commandline. Otherwise, it is not needed.
-
- -P:<Port> Only needed in multiline systems. Personally I
- always put it, also on singleline systems.
-
- -AREA:<AreaNr>
- Define the hudsonbase area to use. Has to be in
- the range 1-200. This is the only parameter which
- is obligatory!
-
- -U:<UserName>
- Use this parameter to define the addressee, who's
- messages should be shown. Default is ALL. (Which
- mean that messages you want to show up in
- NewsDoor should be addressed to ALL) Spaces can
- be replaced by underscores. For example: -
- U:Piet_Peut
-
- -SkipOld Don't do anything when there are no new flashes.
- The user will only see a short "shelling to an
- external program" message.
-
- -Del Delays the user in breaking of the NewsDoor.
- Whenever a flash is shown the user gets a
- optionline with the options to continue or stop
- reading. Using this option it takes a second
- before this line shows up and the inputbuffers
- are cleaned too before the user regains control.
- An extra way to stimulate reading..
-
- Examples:
-
- NEWS.EXE -AREA:200 -SkipOld -NoAsk -Force:3 -N:*N -P:*P
-
- Show all messages to ALL in area 200. If there is nothing new,
- don't bother the users. If there is something to show, put it on
- the screen and force them to read at least the last three new
- flashes. This is what I use myself.
-
- NEWS.EXE -AREA:200 -U:News_Flash -N:*N -P:*P
-
- Show all the flashes in area 200 addressed to "News Flash"
-
- IV. the FILTER.DAT file.
-
- If you write your flashes, chances are that all kind of "noise"
- gets into the newsflash. Originlines, tearlines, kludges etc.
- To filter all this out, you can use the FILTER.DAT file. This
- file contains text-strings which have to be at the beginning of
- the lines to filter. For example:
-
- * Origin:
- SEEN-BY:
- ---
-
- Etc. Every line which starts with one of these strings is not
- shown on screen. The FILTER.DAT should be located in the same
- directory as the NEWS.EXE file.
-
-
- V. Other features:
-
- When you write a flash you can use the complete IBM
- extended-ascii characterset. NewsDoor knows how to translate
- diacritical characters, line and box-symbols and a number of the
- other high-ascii characters to low-ascii. Don't use silly
- kludges like composed characters systems and such. How a
- character is shown on the screen should be handled by the output
- system, not during input.
-
-
- VI. Shareware
-
- NewsDoor is shareware. This means that you have a limited time,
- say 30 days, to evaluate the program. After this period you have
- to decide if this program is useful for you, and if it is, to
- register. Continue to use this program without registering is
- illegal.
-
- When you register NewsDoor you will get a registration key which
- removes the unregistered messages in the flash-screen and which
- adds a registered message plus the name to who it was registered
- during the program exit.
-
- Registration can be done by sending cash, international postal
- money-order or by transferring the shareware fee to my giro-account.
- Creditcards and cheques are not accepted. After the money and
- the registrationform are received a key fill be send using
- fidonet fileattach, Internet uuencoded mail or snailmail. Please
- include a fidonet or internet address.
-
- See the files ORDER.FRM and SUPPORT.DOC for information on how
- to get support and how to register NewsDoor.
