  4. Q: Why should I register my copy of IceZmodem? I am already very satisfied
  5.    with it like it is!
  6. A: Because the people who work at IceSoft Software need to make a living.
  7.    Bringing you innovative software like IceZmodem is their job. It is unfair
  8.    that they do not get paid for their many years of hard work on a software
  9.    program. The same goes for the distributors of IceZmodem- everybody needs
  10.    to make money to earn a living. IceSoft Software is a struggling company
  11.    that is barely on the map. Yet if you continue to use and benefit from
  12.    IceZmodem without paying for it, you are personally hurting everybody at
  13.    IceSoft Software that strives to bring you quality software like
  14.    IceZmodem.

  16. Q: How efficient is IceZmodem?
  17. A: IceZmodem with TurboTrans enabled and 6144 byte block size introduces less
  18.    overhead into the file transfer than any other Zmodem file transfer
  19.    protocol. It has an extremely efficient protocol engine capable of sending
  20.    over 1640 cps on an 8086 class machine and over 5800 CPS on an 80386 class
  21.    machine.

  23. Q: How do I enable TurboTrans?
  24. A: TurboTrans automatically comes on when the remote computer is running
  25.    IceZmodem.

  27. Q: What is that flashing FLOW CONTROL or XOFF FLOW message I see?
  28. A: That means that your computer is sending data too fast to the remote
  29.    computer and your computer is pausing to let the remote system catch
  30.    up. This is perfectly normal and indicates that hardware or software
  31.    handshaking is working fine.

  33. Q: Help me! I keep getting errors in the transfer at routine intervals!
  34.    For example, an error occurs exactly every 15k or 32k.
  35. A: You are running a slow disk cache program such as SMARTDRV.EXE. You
  36.    may be able to solve it by issuing the command SMARTDRV /X to turn off
  37.    the delayed write caching which hogs processor cycles which is not
  38.    good during high speed file transfers. Turning on Hardware Handshaking
  39.    and Slow Handshake in IZMSETUP may help as well provided you have a
  40.    16550 UART. If all else fails, you should try to switch to a more
  41.    efficient disk cache program, preferably one which uses faster EMS
  42.    instead of the slower XMS, or turn the disk cache off before IceZmodem
  43.    loads.

  45. Q: Help me! IceZmodem won't work! It loads fine but then it says "Waiting
  46.    for receiver" or "Waiting for sender" and on the remote computer, all
  47.    I see is garbage on the screen! What should I do?
  48. A: IceZmodem is unable to detect your com port speed. You must add the
  49.    SPEED command to your command line followed by the speed that the
  50.    com port is open at. The reason IceZmodem probably can't automatically
  51.    detect the speed is that you have the com port open at 115200 bps which
  52.    no software is able to auto-detect. This problem can be solved by
  53.    opening the com port at 57600 bps or adding SPEED 115200 right after the
  54.    PORT command.

  56. Q: Does IceSoft Software accept credit cards?
  57. A: Yes! Call (716) 823-5280 voice to order IceZmodem using your
  58.    Mastercard or VISA. Refer to EUROPE.REG to order from Europe.

  60. Q: What does Beta5 or Beta6 mean?
  61. A: IceZmodem is not a fully developed program yet. It is still in Beta
  62.    Testing which is a stage in software development where the program
  63.    is tested on a variety of different platforms, environments and
  64.    conditions by the general public. The general public is expected
  65.    to report back to IceSoft Software with any problems, comments,
  66.    suggestions, and complaints that they have regarding the software.
  67.    The number after Beta is the release number. Beta6 is a newer
  68.    version of the software than Beta5. Yet Beta6 still has many bugs
  69.    that have not yet been discovered.

  71. Q: My computer locks up when I play a MOD file. What's going on?
  72. A: You have the sampling rate set too high in IZMSETUP! Keep lowering
  73.    it a couple slots until your computer no longer runs erratically.

  75. Q: My computer seems to run slow when IceZmodem is running and I get a
  76.    lot of errors in the transfer. What is going on?
  77. A: First, make sure you have CTS/RTS (Hardware) Handshaking turned on
  78.    in IZMSETUP. If you still get errors in the transfer, try lowering
  79.    your COM port speed to 19200 or 38400. If you still get errors after
  80.    that, try the test again but do not press any keys during the file
  81.    transfer. If you find that the errors only occur when you hit a key
  82.    on the keyboard, try turning the "Give COM Ports Highest Priority"
  83.    option on in IZMSETUP. Also, try setting the FIFO Trigger Level to
  84.    1 in the "Use 16550" option in IZMSETUP. You may also want to check
  85.    to see if any TSRs or disk cache programs are hogging your processor
  86.    cycles and not leaving enough for IceZmodem to run fast enough.

  88. Q: I get a "Can't Initialize Protocol (Error #8)" when IceZmodem tries
  89.    to run!
  90. A: You need to free up a few more kilobytes of memory. IceZmodem
  91.    couldn't find enough memory to install the 7k communications
  92.    buffer.
