- The Connect-USA Instant Access Card
- ===================================
-
- The Instant Access Card: A method to enable BBS Sysops to attract first
- time callers, sign up new accounts and eliminate the normal problems
- associated with collecting system time charges and subscription fees.
-
- Callers who would normally purchase time on a BBS are faced with the hassle
- of getting the money to the sysop. No matter how attractive a system is,
- and how much the caller wants to join the system, there is no quick and
- easy method that protects both the sysop and the caller.
-
- The most desired method of both the sysop and the caller is the use of a
- credit card.
-
- If a sysop operates his BBS out of his home, it is virtually impossible to
- get a merchant account to be able to accept major credit cards such as
- VISA, MasterCard and American Express. If a sysop is able to get his bank
- to set up a merchant account, chargebacks are a major problem and he stands
- the chance of having his merchant account cancelled because in the eyes of
- the bank, he is a "mail order/phone order" merchant with a high chargeback
- potential. In addition, he is usually charged the highest rate possible and
- has to pass these charges on to the caller.
-
- The sysop usually resorts to requiring callers to send in checks which
- removes the excitement and instant gratification of being able to sign up
- and use a system "right now!"
-
- The Instant Access Card solves these problems for both the caller and the
- sysop!
-
- The Caller
- ===========
-
- Callers call via 800 number and apply for a Connect-USA Instant Access
- Card. If the caller has a MasterCard or VISA card, and a listed telephone
- number, he may qualify for $25 instant credit that can be used immediately
- while his Instant Access Card application is being processed.
-
- The caller completes the application and selects his own credit limit, from
- $50 to $250. He returns the application with authorization to charge his
- bank account or MasterCard/VISA account for the initial amount he selected
- and the annual $10 card fee. He may also send in a check.
-
- Connect-USA establishes an account for the caller with a credit limit equal
- to the amount sent in with the application.
-
- He or she may then purchase online time with any system that has a merchant
- account with Connect-USA. On the first of each month, Connect-USA will send
- a statement to the caller and the caller may pay it by check or credit
- card. Alternatively, the caller may authorise Connect-USA to automatically
- debit the billing amount to his/her checking account.
-
- The statement sent to the card holder each month includes detailed charge
- information such as amount of the charge and the name of the BBS where the
- charge was made.
-
- The Sysop
- ===========
-
- Because Connect-USA has no requirements that the BBS be located in a store
- front, or that it must have been in business for several years, acquiring a
- Connect-USA merchant account is quick and easy.
-
- The sysop fills out a merchant application and remits a $25 processing fee
- along with it to Connect-USA. After processing, Connect-USA assigns a
- merchant number to the BBS whereupon the BBS may start accepting charges.
-
- To accept a charge from a customer, the BBS merchant calls Connect-USA's
- computer with his modem, enters his merchant number, the customer's account
- number and the amount of the sale. After checking the customer's account,
- the Connect-USA computer will either issue a 'declined' message or an
- authorization number to the merchant. Upon receiving an authorization
- number, the BBS merchant may then process the sale, either for BBS services
- or for merchandise that he may be selling in an online store.
-
- Connect-USA processes the charges and electronically deposits the money to
- the BBS operator's bank account on the 15th of each month. The charge to
- the sysop for this service is seven percent of the amount of the charge. A
- detailed merchant statement is mailed to the sysop when the disbursement is
- made.
-
- The only chargeback a sysop can possibly receive is from a customer who
- might chargeback to Connect-USA the initial $25 credit used when first
- signing up for the card. Every precaution is made to insure that this
- amount is collected and even these chargebacks are usually avoided.
-
- There are no other charges to the sysop.
-
- The sysop will receive $5 for each customer he refers to Connect-USA and
- who qualifies for a Instant Access Card.
-
- Sysops must display "This System Accepts The Connect-USA Instant Access
- Card" and Connect-USA's 800 number on the BBS's opening screen in order to
- maintain a merchant account.
