  9. INTRODUCTION

  11. Welcome to the Shareware Evaluation Public Release of GoldED 2.50!
  12.  
  13. Basically this is a drop-in replacement for earlier versions. It should
  14. work without configuration changes. A number of default settings have
  15. been changed to ease the setup for new users, so if you are using a
  16. simple configuration, some things may work differently, where in
  17. advanced configurations, your settings override the defaults.
  18.  
  19. If you are upgrading from version 2.41, 2.42 or older, you should be
  20. aware that a lot of new features have been added, including many many
  21. new keywords for GOLDED.CFG. I don't have a short list that compares
  22. the older versions with 2.50, sorry. I recommend that you go slowly
  23. through the ADVANCED.CFG configuration example in the GEM250.ZIP
  24. archive. It contains just about all available keywords with example
  25. usage and a short explanation.

  27. The DOS, OS/2 and 386 protected mode versions are distributed in
  28. separate archives with instructions on how to get started with a
  29. simple first-time install (see INSTALL.DOC). The full manual and
  30. advanced configuration examples are distributed in a separate archive.

  50. WHAT IS GOLDED?
  51.  
  52. GoldED is an electronic mail reader and editor for FidoNet compatible
  53. networks, with features for Internet e-mail and newsgroups via gates
  54. or SOUP packets. Also provided are QWK packet import/export features.
  55. GoldED works with most popular message database formats in use in
  56. FidoNet today. Supported formats currently include Fido *.MSG, Hudson,
  57. Squish, JAM, Ezycom, PCBoard and Goldbase. Support for AdeptXBBS and
  58. WildCat! is planned for the next release.
  59.  
  60. GoldED is designed for points, nodes and sysops who want get the most
  61. out of their mail. It is packed with features for both the serious
  62. user and for those who want to have fun with their mail.
  63.  
  64. GoldED is highly configurable, using plain ASCII text files, editable
  65. with your favorite text editor. It is also capable of reading the
  66. configuration files from a wide range of other mail programs such as
  67. BBS'es, front-end mailers and mail processors. In many cases, you
  68. won't even have to write a single line of GoldED configuration to get
  69. started!
