  1.            Express ZModem Receive(EZRECV) Program

  5. EZRECV is a DOS program which was developed for the purpose
  6. of providing an easy automatic receive capability for the
  7. transfer of computer information using modems.  The driving
  8. concept was that belief that computer to computer data 
  9. communications should be as easy as FAX transmissions.
  10.  
  11. EZRECV provides an automatic background ZModem file transfer
  12. capability. The program waits for a computer to call,
  13. receives a file from the other computer, and then terminates
  14. the connection.  The files are stored in a subdirectory off
  15. of the program directory called "INBOX".
  16.  
  17. EZRECV addresses two issues which have limited the spread of
  18. easy computer to computer information transfer.  The first 
  19. is the lack of background file transfer capability.  Ordinary
  20. communications programs offer host mode operation, however
  21. the programs run in the foreground.  Even in cases where
  22. the user can allocate a PC to the function the program must
  23. be stopped in order to do anything with the received files.
  24. By operating in the background, EZRECV allows users to access
  25. the received files while transfers are occuring.
  26.  
  27. The second issue is protocol.  Some proprietary file
  28. transfer programs are available to send and receive files in
  29. the background.  However they typically use a proprietary
  30. protocol to perform the transfer.  The user must buy and
  31. install software for both machines to use these programs.
  32. Because no one vendor has developed a standard accepted by
  33. the industry it is impossible to provide widespread transfer
  34. capability.  By using ZModem transfer protocols, EZRECV allows
  35. most computers to send files to the receiving computer using
  36. their existing modem communications software.  This limits
  37. the expense and guarantees almost universal access.  Use of
  38. another protocol such as XModem would have provided even broader
  39. access, however XMODEM suffers from several technical issues
  40. which limit its utility in a general purpose transfer program.

  42. EZRECV is a shareware program.  The user is allowed to try
  43. out the program before registering.  If the user continues to
  44. use the program, it must be registered.  Registration entitles
  45. the user to the latest version of the software, technical
  46. support, access to the Express BBS, and notification of future
  47. product upgrades.
  48.  
  49. Future upgrades could address areas such as support for 
  50. higher speed modems, host identification, multiple file
  51. transmission capability, and reduced program size.
  52. Registration will drive the addition of these features.
  53. Additionally other related programs will be introduced to
  54. provide better management of the received files.

  56. Installation
  57. This distribution consists of two programs.
  58.  
  59. EESETUP is used to define the basic system configuration
  60. for EZRECV.
  61.  
  62. EZRECV is the background file transfer program.
  63.  
  64. Installation of the software consists of the following
  65. steps.  The commands assume that the software will be
  66. installed on the C: drive, and that the software is
  67. distributed on a floppy disk in the A: drive.  If this
  68. is not the case, modify the following statements to
  69. handle your configuration.

  71.      Step 1: Create a directory for the program.
  72.              C:\>MD EE
  73.  
  74.      Step 2: Change to the new directory.
  75.              C:\>CD EE
  76.  
  77.      Step 3: Copy the files to the new directory.
  78.              C:\EE>COPY A:*.*
  79.  
  80.      Step 4: Create the directory for incoming files.
  81.              C:\EE>MD INBOX
  82.  
  83.      Step 5: Configure the program for your system by
  84.          running EESETUP.
  85.              C:\EE>EESETUP
  86.  
  87.                  A:   Specify the COM port used for the modem.
  88.                         Valid choices are 1 and 2 for COM1 and COM2
  89.                      respectively.

  91.             B:   Specify the incoming phone number, including
  92.                      area code.
  93.  
  94.             C:   Specify the modem reset string.  Default is
  95.                      'Z'.
  96.  
  97.             D:   Specify the modem initialization string.
  98.                      This is important.  The information needed
  99.                      for this string is usually contained in the
  100.                      modem user manual.

  102.      Step 6: Run EZRECV.  This must be executed from within the
  103.          program directory.

  106. That's all there is to it.  If you want to remove EZRECV from
  107. memory, type EZRECV -r at the command prompt.  Note that this
  108. only works if no background programs were loaded into memory
  109. after EZRECV was installed.

  111. Transferring a file to a machine with EZRECV is easy.  After
  112. receiving an incoming call, EZRECV is awaiting a file transfer.
  113. The transmitting system will only see some spurious characters
  114. which is part of the ZMODEM protocol.  The transmitting system
  115. should begin transfer immediately.  At the completion of the
  116. transfer, EZRECV disconnects and waits for the next call.

  129. Express ZModem Receive(EZRECV) version 1.0 is a shareware
  130. program.  You may use it for a period of up to 30 days to
  131. evaluate its usefulness to you.  If you wish to continue
  132. using it you must register it.  Registration entitles you to
  133. the latest version of the software, access to the Express BBS,
  134. and free technical support.  The software may be shipped,
  135. or at your request transmitted directly to you at your EZRECV
  136. phone number.  The registration fee is $29.  This includes
  137. shipping, but does not include sales tax.  California residents
  138. must include 8.25% sales tax.  Corporate multi-site licences are
