Transcription: It seems natural to use a map to find out where we are. But the transcription of geographic reality onto a sheet of paper is not as simple as it seems. First, the elements of the landscape must be identified and their precise position measured in terms of latitude, longitude and altitude. Then, all of these characteristics must be translated into a comprehensible graphic language. Today, modern remote sensing techniques and satellite positioning allow scientists to make a very accurate image of our environment in all its physical and human complexity.
